#SubodhBhave who has been a prominent personality in the #MarathiFilmIndustry has been taking his career graph higher with each new release. He takes pride in being part of the Marathi film industry and doesn’t believe in the need to be part of Hindi film industry just for the heck of it. He respects every language film, including Hindi films. Despite being part of a regional movie circuit, he has strong views on mother tongue films, just like south actors respect their own language films. He believes that Marathi films are not inferior to any films and in fact he is proud that they are respected worldwide for it’s content and issue based subjects. Subodh Bhave has always supported genuine film makers and has been part of multiple genre films. Taking a look at his #filmography, it’ll be noticed that there are hardly any genre he has not been part of. During the promotions of his latest outing, “#Phulrani”, he interacted with our Sr Editor Keerti Kadam.

With each passing year, you are getting better roles and younger heroines….
Well, I am grateful to the makers that they are offering me such movies and I do not have any complaints. In Hindi film industry Salman Khan too is doing the same so I think my presence in such roles should too get a backing. In Hindi films too, higher age bracket stars are romancing younger heroines. I am happy that I am relevant still today. Marathi audience still tolerates me (laughs). All of you do see Salman Khan films (laughs again). No but jokes apart, Salman Khan has earned that stature. He is a huge star, superstar. As far as I am concerned I urge filmmakers to make movies on older hero and a younger heroine. I want to keep working and even after twenty years hence I would love to romance younger heroines. So producers, directors, take note (Laughs).

But seriously speaking, this is not a deliberate attempt. Talking about younger heroines, they get cast according to the requirement of the script. And that applies to my roles too. I will not do a college going young guy because that won’t be justifiable. In fact it is more challenging to pull off these roles and as I enjoy playing difficult characters It’s satisfying.

Frankly, I never wanted to be an actor. I came to this industry by chance. In my college days I was keen on modelling. When I was in college I used to do fashion walk but was never given a chance because I was very skinny. The important thing about fashion walking is that when you walk the ramp, all eyes are on you. In cinema you have background score, settings, angles etc which helps performers. But on the ramp the model has to capture attention single handedly. He has to look flawless and absolutely attention grabbing. Ramp walk looks easy but it’s extremely difficult. But destiny had other things in mind and I turned to acting and it’s my life now.

‘Phulrani’ is based on an iconic Pygmalion. How you got attached to it and since when?
Pygmalion by George Bernard Shaw is a world famous play which was later adapted into a Hollywood film, My Fair Lady. Even noted playwright and Maharashtra’s most loved personality Pu La Deshpande adapted the same play into a Marathi Natak ‘Ti Phulrani’ which is considered a cult classic and many reputed and talented actors want to be part of that play. But our movie ‘Phulrani’ has nothing to do with the marathi play. Frankly, play and cinema are both diversely different mediums. If one wants to follow the play on screen then one might record the play. Mixing play and cinema is inappropriate. Writer, director Vishwas Joshi has based the film’s story on an original English play. He has made it more modern and has incorporated something extra from his side. There is no pressure on any one of us about the comparison.

Subodh Bhave hails from Pune and after completing his graduation from Symbiosis College of Arts and Commerce in Pune he successfully acquired a Masters Degree in commerce. Like he stated he never thought of acting at that point in life, he took up a job as a salesman in an IT company in Pune. But something was amiss and he came to Mumbai and later moved to acting. After doing a few films, his Sanai Chaughade, which was a multi star-cast as such, became a huge hit. Take a look at the actors the film had, Subodh Bhave, Shreyas Talpade, Saie Tamhankar, Santosh Juvekar, Shilpa Tulaskar, Tushar Dalvi, Bharti Achrekar, Chinmay Mandlekar, Anita Date – Kelkar. All of them are very big star-actors at this juncture. Subodh turned director with Katyar Kaljat Ghusali and received immense support from the audiences.

Katyar Kaljat Ghusali, in which Sachin Pilgaonkar debuted as an antagonist and singer Shankar Mahadevan debuted as an actor, depicts the story of the art of music suffering, which is uncannily narrated by a Dagger (Katyar). It was based on a famous play by the same name and Subodh Bhave hit the bull’s eye in his very first directorial venture. In his illustrious career some of the films stand out. Ani ….Dr Kashinath Ghanekar was based on the life of Maharashtra’s most loved actor Kashinath Ghanekar. His life was full of controversies but there was a time he ruled Marathi Natak arena by having Housefull boards most of the time. The film had Subodh Bhave playing Dr Ghanekar and Abhijit Deshpande debuted as a director. This movie too rattled the box office. Fashion designer turned director Vikram Phadnis’ debut directorial Marathi film ‘Hrudayantar’ had Mukta Barve and Subodh Bhave playing leads. Subodh played a role of an estranged husband but a doting father to their only daughter battling cancer.

Another biopic which brought Subodh Bhave into limelight was ‘Lokmanya – Ek Yug Purush’ which was based on the life of Bal Gangadhar Tilak, a social reformer and the one of the original freedom fighters of the Indian independence movement. Om Raut debuted as a director with this film who later directed ‘Tanhaji’ starring Ajay Devgn. Another play which was adapted into a film was ‘Savita Damodar Paranjpe’ which had Subodh Bhave playing the main role. Incidentally it was produced by handsome hunk John Abraham. Before that Subodh Bhave won hearts with his portrayal of Bal Gandharva. Bal Gandharva is a biopic of singer and stage actor Narayan Shripad Rajhans, famously known as Bal Gandharva. The female characters that he has played have been immortalised in history. Director Ravi Jadhav who had dished out an extremely successful film ‘Natarang’, made ‘Sound of Heaven: The Story of Bal Gandharva’ with Subodh Bhave in the role of Bal Gandharva. In earlier times when females were not allowed or available to act in plays, male artists used to play female parts. And Bal Gandharva was the most loved actor in female roles. In fact he used to look so beautiful in that get up that many wanted to marry him. Subodh aced the role and won laurels. Veteran actor Nana Patekar is very stingy in offering compliments. But after watching Subodh playing Bal Gandharva, he praised him no end. This proves how well Subodh must have portrayed that character. The film had won the National Award. Subodh Bhave turned producer with Pushpak Vimaan. And under his production house, Kanha’s Magic, several television serials are being produced.

Your last outing, Vaalvi, is a smash hit. Your views on that.
I am just a small part of Vaalvi. The entire credit for the success of the film goes to it’s director Paresh Mokashi and writer Madhugandha Kulkarni. It’s their labour of love and I, Swapnil Joshi, Shivani Surve and Anita Date – Kelkar played parts in it following the director’s vision. It’s again a reminder that good films do get audiences’ backing. But only one or two films running successfully isn’t enough.

You have played a variety of roles in numerous films. Are you partial to Biopics or historicals?
(Tongue-in-Cheek) No one offers me anything, so I get myself cast in biopics. But seriously, I like to explore various subjects. Whether it’s a biopic, a family drama or even a Masala film. I am game for any genre as far my character has something important to do in it. I do not entangle myself in anything particular. I always look out for something I haven’t explored earlier. I look for challenges in the characters and enjoy portraying exigent characters. Another aspect is I do not unnecessarily get bogged down by R & D of any role. I accept film only if I like the script. Then I trust my director’s vision. I don’t go beyond his perception because he has cinema in mind in totality. If I want to do a thing differently, I do it, but with the director’s permission. I always try to be true to the writer’s writing and the sphere of the director.

In recent times Subodh Bhave played Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj in a historical ‘Har Har Mahadev’ which was made from the point of view of his loyal warrior soldier Bajiprabhu Deshpande which was played by Sharad Kelkar. Incidentally Sharad Kelkar has portrayed Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj’s role in ‘Tanhaji’.

How did you manage to play Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj?
Initially I was sceptical about matching the physicality of Maharaj. But Shivaji Maharaj’s history is 400 years old and more than the physical aspects his ideology is of utmost important. Then I trusted the vision of the director Abhijit Deshpande. So I decided not to pressurise myself about the physicality and concentrate on the teachings and the doctrine of the great Maratha warrior King. Before start of the shoot, any shoot, my mind is full of various thoughts, sometimes nervous too. But on the day of the shoot I channelise all those thoughts in a singular tunnel and perform which helps me get over any anxieties present.

Moreover I believe in trusting my director. His passion should be visible in his eyes and actions then I become comfortable. I do not discriminate between a new or an old director. I gauge the director’s ‘madness’ towards his film. Likewise the script is the most important part so I talk to the writer to understand his way of thinking about the character. Frankly I do not ask for the script. During ‘Phulrani’ too director Vishwas Joshi shared his idea to me and I was in the project since then. Priyadarshini Indalkar, Sushant Shelar, Gaurav More, Gaurav Ghatnekar, Milind Shinde etc came on board later on. There’s late Vikram Gokhale too in the film, which unfortunately is his last film. His character was specially created and incorporated in the film and father-son generation gap is beautifully weaved in it and it’s worth watching.

‘Badshah of Biopics’, Subodh Bhave is coming up with another film which is an adaptation of a Marathi classic play ‘Sangeet Manapman’.

Music composers Harshit-Abhiraj are currently in the limelight for the music of the film ‘Raundal’. After making a name for themselves with the music-oriented film ‘Baban’, they have given melodious music for ‘Sarja’. In this movie Anil Nagarkar, Rohit Chavan, Tushar Nagargoje, Aishwarya Bhalerao, Aakash Petkar, Jyoti Shetsandhi, Jagannath Ghadage, Vishnu Kedar, Prashant Pise, Child Artist Gauri Khandagale, Kunal Gaikwad and other actors have played various characters. You are primarily known for playing comic characters. What prompted you to play a serious father in Baalbharti?
Frankly it’s not a serious role as such. The character has different shades including humorous and emotional. He is a real father of today’s generation who wants his child to get good education. Most of the Marathi families put thrust on education and the character is very relatable. He is an electric diploma holder running a small shop and his wife is a post graduate in Marathi language. Both are keen on giving the best education to their child because in today’s times education has become more competitive. Personally I relate to this role. I take keen interest in both my daughter’s education. I try to provide them whatever they require for that. I am their friend. My father used to be very concerned about our education. As a tribute to him my name in the credits is Siddharth Ramchandra Jadhav.

We used to stay in slums but he made sure that we get proper education. My brother is a Medico and my sister is a Lawyer. I have completed graduation and have done one year of law. So these things came back to my mind while performing. Every parent wants their child to get good education. The film Baalbharti focuses on how to deal with language barriers. It doesn’t say that particular language is good or bad. As an actor and as an audience I have always admired writer, director Nitin Nandan. I always wanted to work with him. He called me in 2019 and I said yes in the first reading itself. I liked the role and was confident that Nitin will guide me in the right direction. He has extracted good performance from me. He used to curtail my intensity to match his vision of the character I portrayed. We, earlier, were to work together in a film having Ashok Mama (Ashok Saraf) and Dilip Prabhavalkar. But things didn’t work out then.

Nitin is a very sensitive director. He is a master in projecting themes from the eyes of children. I remember his Jhing Chak Jhing where children refrain their farmer father from committing suicide. I would like to say that I am a director’s actor, I ask a lot of questions. I learnt it from my mentor Mahesh Manjrekar who encourages actors to ask questions while shooting, instead of keeping your queries to yourself. It’s not that all the suggestions will be accepted but both, actor and director, get different points of view. Mahesh Manjrekar, Gajendra Ahire, Kedar Shinde, all are super directors and they trust their actors and I have always been grateful to them. Likewise Nitin Nandan too showed faith in me to portray this intricate character, and I say thank you to him too.

Do you feel restricted while playing roles which are not out and out comedic?
I am aware that people call me a comedy actor. But it’s their perception. They are putting me up in a square which for me is a frame. So it depends how you look at the situations. I am an actor and by saying that I am confident enough to play all kinds of characters. This confidence is given to me by Mahesh Manjrekar sir. I do not go chasing genres but I’ll say genre selects me.

I love doing comedy and am proud that I can make people laugh. Mind you comedy is the toughest genre but I do not want to be entangled only in it. Earlier too I have done roles which did not have comic element to it. In Mi Shivaji Raje Bhosle Boltoy, I played a grey shaded character. In Dream Mall I played a rapist. In Gajendra Ahire’s Paradh I played an extremely different kind of role. I played Ebrahim Bhai in Shikshanachya Aaicha Gho. I played a different kind of role in Dhurala too. Like I said I am an actor and I like to explore different stories, like to play different characters, like to indulge in different genres. Directors allow actors to explore the depth of characters, and as an actor it’s my duty to do it to his satisfaction.

Do you feel that the teaching patterns in schools should undergo changes?
I am not big enough to comment on that. The education sector has evolved over the years. Though English has gained prominence, it doesn’t mean non-English speaking speakers are less talented. In Baalbharti we are not discussing English being good or bad but how to overcome the fear of learning it. It is a language and if one puts efforts one can learn it, master it. There’s nothing to be ashamed about not being proficient in English. We have shown techniques about how to get over the fright of learning English. In most of the foreign countries people do not know English. But those are highly progressed nations. So the language doesn’t decide the intelligence of a person. Recently the education Minister of Maharashtra said that they are planning to print textbooks of medical sciences and engineering in Marathi so that large number of students could be benefitted.

How do you prepare yourself for a project?
In theatre there are rehearsals where you keep polishing your role. In fact the medium gives you to improvise on a daily basis. These days, for movies, there are workshops. Here everything is taken care of. Apart from how to say your lines, small nuances are worked out. It helps in building up the confidence of an actor. This definitely is a good learning process, especially for an actor like me. I can work out the punches which are going to work and avoid those which may fall flat. You exactly know how the co-actor is going to react, thus helping you in performing. This saves a lot of time when we go on a set. As everything is already worked out the shooting gets speeded up which is beneficial to actors, directors and of course the producers.

I am an inquisitive actor. I am an enthusiastic actor. I am an excited actor. I always want to know more and more about the character I am playing. While doing comedy scenes I improvise a lot. Of course the additions are retained only after the approval of the director. People call me a ‘high energy’ actor. But that comes from wanting to do justice to my character. During workshops you get to learn a lot. For example I was doing a Hindi film. In one of the scenes the director asked to take a particular gait while walking. It sounded odd to me and I told him, ‘Sir, I am doing lead roles in Marathi. I have to think of my fans out there too. They may not like it. Please will you change it?’ He explained and asked me do whatever was required for the scene. I did try couple of ways. He, then showed me 37 different ways of walk which highlited the character and said, ‘You’ll get character out of your role. Always find out what character will do in a given situation’. It was a learning lesson for me. So this is what transpires at workshops. It’s important to chalk out everything before facing the camera.

You have completed 22 years in the industry. Your views on that?
I have completed just 22 years. It’s just a beginning. A long way to go. I am thankful to all my writers and directors to make me reach here. Actors get all the credit for good cinema or good performance. But I give credit to the writers and directors who envision those characters. In Dhurala, I was appreciated for a subtle portrayal but it’s the director who kept me in check. For me Cinema is Cinema, period. I want to be part of it permanently. A lot of people talk of OTT being a threat to cinema. But wasn’t the same was said when television was spreading wings? Audiences need entertainment and we need to cater to that need, irrespective of the medium. OTT is exploring subjects which are taboo to cinema. But bottom line is that everyone should adapt to the changing times.

I am a product of the theatre. I have always liked performing live in plays. And because of plays I am where I am today. All mediums are equal to me. In cinema one needs to work ‘technically’. Mahesh Manjrekar sir always used to tell me, “Siddhu, Catch the camera…” I am not a method actor, directors should channelise my energy. Every director has a different knack. Mahesh sir tells everything during the reading. Gajendra Ahire explains things in just two lines. Others allow me to do whatever I want to do and then make necessary corrections with the intensity etc. For me an actor should keep on thinking, even if it’s futile in the end, but he should keep thinking. I am proud that I represent Marathi industry in Bollywood. Marathi actors are respected all over India.

How do you keep yourself fit, physically and mentally?
I do not have any vices. I don’t smoke, I don’t drink. I am a brand Ambassador of De-Addiction Campaign of Maharashtra State. Ups and downs are part of any profession. In our profession the ratio is high. But one must not get bogged down in difficult situations. One should not lose the focus. If I do not have any work in my hand I’ll not go to the bar, I’ll instead go to the Gym. I am consciously around positive people which ensures mental peace. Of course, physical exercise with keeping in mind your age, is necessary as well as taking proper rest, 8 hours of sleep helps me to remain positive.

Producer Shelna K. And Simmy has co-produced ‘Anya’ with Capitalwoods under the banner of Initiative Films. The film is directed by Simmi Joseph. Simmi has made significant contributions to Southern films to this day. Following in the footsteps of veteran Hindi singers, Salman has made his debut in Marathi cinema. The film ‘Anya’, is a bilingual as it’s been shot in Marathi and Hindi, has Salman Ali singing Marathi as well as a Hindi song.

Salman has sung the Marathi song ‘Aik Pakhra …’ in Marathi. The song is written by Prashant Jamadar and Sajeev Sarathi and the composer Raamnath has successfully fulfilled the responsibility of composing melodious music. The song in Hindi is ‘O Re Parinde …’ which is written by Sajeev Sarathi. This song is also composed by Raamnath. Salman expressed his happiness that he got the opportunity to make his debut in Marathi through a Anya which deals with important societal issues. Glamorous #SaieTamhankar is a big name in the #MarathiFilmIndustry and she also works in other different languages, viz. Hindi, Tamil, Malayalam. As a preparation of the role in Pondicherry she had taken a break from social media. She terms it as a social media detox and clarifies that it was needed to concentrate on a difficult role. Importantly she did not have any assistants, due to covid restrictions, and managed her own make-up, hair, costumes etc. which was liberating for her. Talking about her character Nikita in Pondicherry she says, “I play a mother of a 10 year old boy whose father is away on a ship. To look after the house she works in a restaurant and later works as a guide to foreign tourists in the eponymous city. To have an additional revenue she rents a room in her house for ‘house guests’. Though the character is vulnerable at times, she is a strong woman too. Nikita has control over her emotions but in real life I am exactly the opposite. I fall in love easily”. Adding further she says, “Playing Nikita was draining as it’s an intense character. I get pulled towards the characters that have a lot of pain and emotions in their journey. But I get involved in every film like that. Maybe, career wise, it has worked in my favour.”

Saie Tamhankar’s new web series Pet Puraan released recently and is loved by the viewers. This one is available on SonyLiv and is in Marathi, Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Kannada and Bengali. Talking about the series Saie said, “After the trailer of Pet Puraan was out I realised that majority of my friends are pet-parents. It’s very much today’s subject is relatable to today’s young couples. When I heard the script I had no reason to say no.” Adding further she said, “Today’s youth is vary of having babies, so they opt to be a pet parent. There are quite a few young couples who do not want to have kids, at least for a few years after the marriage. Pets are like family members and their love is unconditional. I hope the new wave translates into coming days and transforms into something. Also I hope people adopt pets rather than buy them.”

In the said series it’s shown that husband and wife are under the pressure from the respective families to have a baby. They decide to be a pet parent but both have different views on pets. One likes dogs and the other cats. To find a way they decide to have both as pets. But it is believed that cats and dogs can’t co-exist. “These are myths. I strongly believe that cats and dogs can co-exist. We are breaking a societal myth. People who are afraid of that myth will get to know something new.” opined Saie.

The pets have played major roles in many films like Salman Khan and Madhuri Dixit starrer Hum Aapke Hain Kaun had Tuffy, Hrithik Roshan, Ranveer Singh and Priyanka Chopra starrer Dil Dhadakane Do had Pluto, Akshay Kumar’s Entertainment had Entertainment and the list goes on. Now the question is, how the film makers extract ‘performances’ from the pet animals. On a similar question Saie answered, “You know it is difficult to work with animals as they are not actors. You do not know how they are going to behave in a shot. For us everyday was a new day. A lot of things have happened without planning. It could be a reaction or a movement. Our entire scene shifted 360° because of the pets. I think they have created magic. I will never ever forget this experience. I feel grounded.”

Saie Tamhankar is very active on social media and her photographs are much awaited. She carries her attires with grace and looks good in westerns and great in sarees. Kriti Sanon headlined ‘Mimi’ was released digitally due to pandemic induced lockdown where in Saie played Kriti’s best friend and her performance garnered a lot of love from the viewers. She also starred in Tamil web series Navarasa which is created by Mani Ratnam. Her latest web series Berojgar written and directed by Arjun J Mohite is out and is garnering audience support.
