September 12: Sayani Gupta’s directorial debut, Aasmani, has been officially cleared of copyright infringement allegations by the Screenwriters Association’s (SWA) Dispute Settlement Committee (DSC). The complaint, filed against Gupta and editor Paramita Ghosh, alleged similarities between the short film Aasmani and Prabha, an unreleased documentary. Following a thorough review of the submissions and an independent expert analysis, the DSC concluded that both projects merely shared a broad underlying concept, whereas the narrative execution, character arcs, core conflict, and overall storytelling remained entirely distinct. The committee reiterated that copyright law protects the specific expression of an idea rather than the idea itself—particularly when the subject concerns publicly available facts about a real person’s life.

The DSC also noted that Gupta has filed a separate defamation suit against the complainant, in which the court has ruled favourably in favour of Sayani Gupta. Since issues in that case overlap with the DSC complaint, the matter is now sub judice, barring the DSC from further adjudication. The proceedings have accordingly been concluded and the complaint closed at SWA’s end, without prejudice to the legal rights and remedies available to either party. The finding brings significant relief to Sayani, clarifying a dispute that had cast an unwarranted shadow over her directorial debut’s otherwise triumphant global festival run. For Gupta, this development brings the copyright infringement complaint before the SWA to a close at a time when Aasmani continues its international festival journey, allowing the focus to return to the film.
