On the 13th anniversary of a cult ‘Chak De India’ film, writer of the movie Jaideep Sahni, speaks about the impact the film has had in cinema and society. Jaideep Sahni’s 15-year creative collaboration with Yash Raj Films’ has seen him write some brilliant hits like Bunty Aur Babli, Rocket Singh : Salesman of the Year, Shuddh Desi Romance, Aaja Nachle and the cult classic Chak De! India starring Shah Rukh Khan. On the 13th anniversary of this generation defining film, Jaideep says director Shimit Amin and him had all the creative freedom from Aditya Chopra to make this film which is now regarded as one of the best films that the industry has ever made.

“I had wanted to tell this story for a few years. So, when Adi asked me after Bunty Aur Babli what I wanted to do next, I told him that I wanted to do this film which could somehow form a bridge between the world of women athletes and the rest of the country. As I told him more about what I’d seen and felt, he agreed that it was a shame that not enough people knew about this world, and also that it could make a really great film if we got things right,” says Jaideep.

Jaideep has made a mark in Bollywood in his own right, much like director Shimit Amin who too wowed everyone with his brilliance as a visionary director. The duo was encouraged to push the content envelope by Aditya, who wanted their distinct voice and vision to shine through.

“Shimit and I have been friends since the time I was writing Company and he was editing Bhoot at Ram Gopal Varma’s office but it was Adi’s conviction after seeing Ab Tak Chhappan that he must be the director for this film. Adi’s and Shimit’s faith in the film as producer and director at that early stage was very reassuring for me since I knew my writing was going into the hands of people I trusted and respected,” says Jaideep, who like Shimit, is a complete outsider and both were handpicked and groomed by Adi because of their sheer brilliance.

Jaideep, thus, feels he has always been given a free hand at YRF which is why he has written such diverse films. He says, “5 of my scripts, all very different from each other, have been produced by YRF. These have been directed by 4 different directors. There’s something different about a studio built and run by filmmakers, which cannot be described superficially but working filmmakers understand and appreciate.”

Media has often speculated if Chak De! India was way ahead of its time from a creative vision because they feel had the film released now, it would shatter every box office record. Jaideep is happy that Chak De! India became a milestone moment in Indian cinema.

“Sometimes people call Chak De! ahead of its times but I don’t know how to judge that. It’s just that as audience we get too busy in our daily lives and forget how happy something new can make us if we give it a chance, and as storytellers, we are always under pressure to be entertaining which can impose an artificial ceiling on our choice of subjects. But subjects are always bigger than the storytellers, and if we respect them, they gently show us the way,” he says.

Interestingly, Jaideep completes 20 years in the film industry. He debuted as a writer for Jungle in 2000 for Ram Gopal Varma. He collaborated with YRF in 2005 with Bunty Aur Babli and has since then worked closely with Adi.

He says, “Well, on my first film’s set someone mistook me for the DTP operator even after seeing me every day for two months because I used to work on a computer. To witness screenwriting come back from that forgotten corner to the forefront of everyone’s attention today is the greatest satisfaction of all for us writers.”

Jaideep adds, “To have imagined and written films of different genres, set in so many different environments, with different rhythms and dialects and slangs, has been a great joy. So many of these characters, dialogues or phrases of songs having become a part of peoples’ everyday conversation is something I didn’t aim for but have finally learned to enjoy gracefully without getting shocked. But I am always conscious that this is also because of the reach of this medium, and we should not let go of any opportunity to put this clumsy power to some good use, to build a few bridges of trust or maybe start a useful conversation.”

The post ‘Chak De India’ became a bridge between the world of women athletes and the rest of the country first appeared on Latest News, Breaking News, National News, World News, India News, Bollywood News, Business News, Politics News, Sports News, Entertainment News - CineBuster.

Popular actress Hrishitaa Bhatt has managed to stay relevant in tune with trends and times with her acting credentials. She debuted in the film ‘Asoka’ opposite Shahrukh Khan, but it was Haasil that brought her to fame. Bhatt got acclaimed for this role and appeared in films like Ab Tak Chhappan, Miss Tanakpur Hazir Ho. In 2011, she co-produced her first-ever film ‘Shakal Pe Mat Ja’ and has even worked in an international film called ‘Flames’. Starting her career as a model, she has been a part of various music videos and is a trained Kathak dancer. Praising this digital space, the actress feels that the platform gives a break to many talents.

Hrishitaa Bhatt has now set her eyes on the digital medium. As the intriguing web series ‘Chargesheet: Innocent or Guilty?’ streams on Zee 5, Hrishitaa Bhatt, personifying Chitrangada Singh- a character from the periodic drama, opens up about her experiences of working for the ‘over-the-top’ platform for the first time during a recent photoshoot in Mumbai. The story that runs through eight episodes showcasing prolific court cases gradually unravels the mystery behind the murder of one of the most promising tennis players of the nation.

With a significant paradigm shift in the entertainment industry, over-the-top platforms such as Netflix or Zee5 have been able to cater to the audience, quality content with the ease of portability and convenience of one’s own space and time. Such a trend would surely pave the way in days to come, feels Hrishitaa, the actress who has worked predominantly in films. “As an actor your choices are confined to taking chances as per the movie and the revenue it would generate. The studios would not want to experiment unless they have these kinds of platforms and therefore in most cases they put the original content directly without doing much about it. If at all studios would like to be innovative, they need a certain storyline and a budget that could only be possible on digital media. OTT gives the kind of creative freedom that lacks in the traditional platforms otherwise. So for producers and actors, they are a boon as it is the best way to connect with the audience at large. Also televisions have done little to change the kind of “old wine in a new bottle” kind of melodramas despite the change in the number and taste of the audience. This is where OTT steps in with its fresh and engaging set of content that is nowhere found on television” adds Hrishitaa.

‘Chargesheet’ is a huge success on OTT and presently, she is working on a series named “LalBazaar” that would be aired on Zee5 very soon. “As an actor I would love to be a part of great projects with diverse roles, not necessarily to be on the lead role always. I have been into a couple of regional films too such as Bengali, Marathi, and Punjabi. I am neither in favour of any medium or against it. It is just that we need to evolve and adapt ourselves with the changing times and keep ourselves open to new challenges, learning and trying” feels Hrishitaa. Lately, she has been occupied with hosting a show called “Rangoli” on DD, something pretty close to her heart as it gives her an opportunity to connect with the rural folk. Being married, she has to continuously strike a balance between her personal and professional life, the reason for which she does not take up projects that come along unless they appeal to her. She was part of the Film Preview Committee for the prestigious IFFI 2017.

Speaking of her photo shoot held recently, “I feel everything around us is transient, right from seasons to fashion to style. Considering the demands of a certain time period or age or a role, we might want to adopt a certain look or dress in a certain way. So it comes without saying that we must also change the way how people identify us constantly. With Avani Agasti as my stylist, the five ‘bold and beautiful’ looks created and manifested through the photo shoot were different and a complete breakaway from the usual ‘chubby-bubbly’ or the ‘girl-next-door’ kind of an image people perceived me with.”

“Women are empowering themselves and that is a revolution in itself. Being a woman myself and working in the public domain for so many years, I feel it is time that women speak up and not just be passive participants to whatever is thrust on their way” she adds.

The post Hrishitaa Bhatt : Women should not be passive participants to whatever is thrust on their way first appeared on Latest News, Breaking News, National News, World News, India News, Bollywood News, Business News, Politics News, Sports News, Entertainment News - CineBuster.
