Renowned film trade analyst #KomalNahta has launched a new season of his popular podcast, Game Changers: The Music Series. This installment focuses on iconic singers, composers, and musical pioneers as they reflect on their creative paths, artistic inspirations, and the hidden stories behind timeless hit tracks. The newest episode sees legendary maestro #AdnanSami stepping into the spotlight to discuss his career and the modern music landscape.

Adnan Sami is a legendary singer, musician, and composer known for his incredible versatility, signature piano renditions, and a career spanning decades across both film and independent music. Appearing on the podcast, he delved into the shifting dynamics of the industry and how artists must continuously evolve. While talking about how important it is for musicians today to reinvent themselves, Adnan Sami shared, “In earlier days, the music industry was an extension of the film industry. The majority of hits and songs used to come through playback singing, which is a concept that exists only in India. Through the direction of music directors and by adapting to new singing styles, singers used to reinvent themselves.”

He further shared, “Now, an independent scene has started, where singers have started coming in front of the camera and presenting themselves. This was always there in the West. Take Madonna, for example. She is the queen of reinvention. Some of them were good, some of them were not, but she always kept reinventing herself. It’s always important to keep changing and evolving. You and your music should both change a bit according to the times.”

Komal Nahta, one of India’s most respected trade analysts, is back with a fresh season of his podcast Game Changers: The Music Series. This edition shines a spotlight on celebrated singers, composers, and music maestros as they share their creative journeys, inspirations, and the untold stories behind the music that has shaped generations. The latest episode featured Adnan Sami.

Adnan Sami, the celebrated singer, composer, and musician who revolutionized Indian pop music, recently joined Komal Nahta on the podcast to reflect on his creative journey and iconic collaborations. Recalling his dream project with legendary actor Amitabh Bachchan for the hit track Kabhi Nahi, Adnan shared a hilarious first reaction: “Mai toh bathroom singer hu, mai nai gaata”.

Elaborating on the memory, he revealed that while working on his second album, Tera Chehra, he gathered the courage to play Kabhi Nahi for Bachchan. Though the megastar loved the track, he initially drew back at singing, saying, “Kya baat kar rahe ho; main toh nahi gaata… I’m just a bathroom singer; this is too difficult for me.” After Sami reminded him of his legendary tracks in Mr. Natwarlal and Silsila, Bachchan took the track to practice. Once in the studio, the team pushed him from low-tone notes into higher registers, which he nailed effortlessly. Addressing Bachchan’s worry that singing with headphones would destroy the energy (“Headphones mein jab gaane jaunga, saara josh khatam ho jaayega”), they recorded him live with no headphones and a cloth-wrapped mic. Describing the extraordinary session, Sami added, “He sounded like a million bucks. I wish we had BTS and everything in that era, because watching him record, I wish I had a camera. The expressions and joy he had on his face—Gen Z won’t understand, but it was a ‘Kodak Moment.'”

The celebrated pianist and vocalist is sure to give you your expected dose of entertainment. Going by past experience, he is guaranteed to enthrall music lovers. Most musicians, when performing for a concert are used to everything being taken care of for them by a technical team. In the current scenario, because of the nationwide lockdown, this is for the first time they are trying to figure out how to put their best act with limited help just like how Australian country singer Keith Urban and his wife actor Nicole Kidman recently did through a short and sweet performance from their warehouse. The concert was viewed by fans on a social media account last month after the entire world came under lockdown to prevent the spread of Covid-19.

Talking about his preparations, Adnan confidently informs, “Luckily for me, when I was twelve years-old, my father had gifted me a home studio. I had no choice but to engineer. That’s how my technical knowledge became strong.” But figuring out the shooting part is still a bit of challenge which Adnan is now settling down with, this being his first digital concert. Well for starters, he didn’t have to break his head on which part of his home is going to be a world stage on April 11.

The interesting story about that is that Adnan being an accomplished concert pianist, a few years ago had first things first locked in the placement of his Grand Piano when he was doing up the interior of his plush apartment in the western suburb of Mumbai. His diktat to the interior designer was, “This is where the paino is going to be. Now, you figure out where you want everything else to be.”  So Adnan’s performance space is locked. Still, at home his two-and-half -year-old daughter Medina can often be seen looking at how things are moving around the house in a quizzical manner. Says Adnan, “She is perceptive to the hustle and bustle in the last few days. She is probably wondering, why her Baba, who doesn’t take her out anymore, is looking at the same piano, which has been around for some years from different angles 25 times in a day. What’s the big deal?”

Lastly Adnan says while he was aware of various performing artists doing different things through their social media handles to maintain an interaction with the audience, he preferred to lie low. So how did he come on board for the T-Series and RED FM The Care concert? He says, “I had been reading about the current scenario, the general economic crunch and the plight of the migrant workers. At the same time T-Series and RED FM approached me for this noble initiative to perform, whereby we would be able to generate funds for the PM Cares Fund, I was delighted with the larger humanitarian cause of this whole initiative and I agreed instantly.”

Taking the success story ahead, Sami has now come up with a Farsi as well as a Pashto version of the heart-touching number, titled Ba Yadam Asti (in Farsi with lyrics by Asad Badie) and Biya Biya Yaadigi (in Pashto with lyrics by Parhiz Saghiwal). Adnan felt the need to do it for his fans and for the love they have showered on him through the years. He explains, “My family lineage can be traced to Afghanistan. My paternal great grandfather was from Afghanistan. My grandfather was the governor of four Afghan provinces under King Amanullah Khan’s time and was also the King’s first cousin. So my family has had old ties-relations with the royal family as well. I have had this affinity and association with the people over there. I have received tremendous love for my work in music from them. The languages spoken in Afghanistan are Farsi and Pashto. It was my commitment and promise to the people over there that someday I would do something in both these languages.”

Adnan calls the two new versions of Tu Yaad Aya his ‘humble tribute to the people in Afghanistan, Iran and the entire Central Asia’. “With Tu Yaad Aya, there was a wonderful opportunity to fulfill that promise. My greatest inspiration today is my wife Roya who is originally from Afghanistan. Therefore my relationship with the Afghan people is two-fold! They also call me their ‘Son-in-law’!” he asserts. Tu Yaad Aya’s Farsi version titled Ba Yadam Asti and Pashto version titled Biya Biya Yaadigi, with music by Kunaal Vermaa, composed by Lo Jill, sung by Adnan Sami and produced by T-Series are out now on Pop Chartbusters channel on YouTube.

Tu Yaad Aya, directed by Arvindr Khaira marks Sami’s return to the music scene after a long hiatus. The celebrated musician’s latest track Tu Yaad Aya is a contemporary, soulful melody, imprinted with signature Adnan Sami magic and style. Adnan shares, “I had voluntarily taken a sabbatical. Even though one may not actively work in the public eye, a composer, singer or any creative person would be toying with ideas of what to do next. When the Padma Awards were announced recently, I was hit by a very delightful, a pleasant kind of shock. I was overwhelmed. I was engulfed by a deep sense of gratitude towards my country and my fans, who have all along appreciated my work and showered me with so much love and warmth in all these years.”

He further adds, “Bhushan, T-Series and I share a very old and cherished relationship that goes back to almost 20 years and we were in talks to work together for some time. I also felt bahot ho gaya aaram, I owe it to people who have given me so much to give them something back. Tu Yaad Aya is my way of saying thank you to everyone for all the affection and love you have blessed me with for years.”

T-Series head honcho Bhushan Kumar, who’s known for his keen sense of music, talks about his fond relationship with the singer and asserts, “Adnan is one of the best talents we have in the industry. We have had a long-standing association that goes back two decades. We had been planning to do a song together. Tu Yaad Aya is a melodious, romantic track that I’m sure will be the new anthem. We are very confident about the song and with Adnan back in the game, we will hopefully do a lot more work together.”

Director Arvindr Khaira reveals, “It was a huge privilege to shoot a song with Adnan Sami. He’s a legend and thorough professional and had amazing suggestions for us. I salute his creative process that goes beyond just composing and singing a song. He gets involved even in making it visually captivating.”

With music and lyrics by Kunaal Vermaa, Tu Yaad Aya features actor Adah Sharma opposite Adnan. The song is expected to be out soon and we can’t wait any longer.
