There are stars who are remembered for what they do in front of the camera. Then there are stars whose reputation is built just as much on what happens around it. In Akshay Kumar’s case, ask directors, choreographers or people who have spent years working around him and a remarkably consistent picture emerges — he’s the guy who turns up, knows his job, respects the clock, takes the work seriously and despite the scale of his stardom, remains deeply involved in the business of actually making a film.

These are eight stories that explain why that reputation has followed him for more than three decades.

1. THE 7 AM CALL TIME

Ahmed Khan has one of the simplest Akshay Kumar stories, and perhaps the most telling. A 7 am roll call doesn’t mean a 7 am phone call asking where the actor is. It means Akshay is already there. Speaking to The Indian Express in 2024, Khan recalled, “He is punctual. Suppose we have a roll at 7 am, at 6:30 am I receive a call, ‘Sir, Akshay sir’s car is here. Sir Akshay sir is in the van, getting ready, Sir Akshay sir is asking if he should walk out, it is 5 minutes to 7.’ As soon as I say, ‘yes, camera ready hai kya?’ He’s here. ‘Chal ready hu, 7 baj gaya.’” The story gets better. Khan added that Akshay doesn’t turn his punctuality into a power play. “He never even gets mad at you or makes you feel that you made him wait.” For a film set, where one person’s delay can hold up dozens of others, that is not a small thing.

2. THE SET WHERE SAFETY CAME FIRST

Akshay built his reputation doing the kind of action that often involved real risk, but he has also spoken about how the responsibility extends beyond the actor performing the stunt. In a 2014 interview with Bollywood Journalist, while discussing the treatment of stuntmen and body doubles, he pointed to the precautions on his own sets. “We also take care of the crew. I can tell you that on my sets we had arranged for an ambulance that was always on the standby. We also had a doctor on the sets and on top of that, we had coordinated with the nearby hospitals and had arranged for two emergency beds, if we needed it. So much for safety.”

He also explained his own approach to action years later, telling The Times of India that “good fear” means checking the equipment properly because “a small mistake” can cost someone their life. Whatever one thinks of his appetite for performing his own stunts, the important part of the story is that he doesn’t treat the danger as his alone.

3. EIGHT HOURS, BUT EIGHT HOURS OF WORK

There is a misconception that Akshay’s famous eight-hour rule is loved by the unit. The people who work with him value every bit of it. Bosco Martis saw it when Akshay was shooting songs in Jordan.

“He works strictly for eight hours, but during those eight hours, he doesn’t leave the set,” Bosco told Siddharth Kannan. Then came the extraordinary part: “He was not well, he hadn’t rehearsed. He had 101-102 fever, but he was dancing. There was no break. We shot four songs back-to-back in 4 degrees temperature. There was a wind chill, dancers had to be given extra care. Akshay sir was just at it.”

Bosco’s verdict was almost affectionate: “Woh faulaad hai” — he is made of steel. And it wasn’t simply physical endurance that Bosco remembered. He also said Akshay “brings a great energy to set, and unites the crew.”

4. HE DOESN’T ARRIVE WITH A ‘STAR’ ATTITUDE

Rohit Shetty knew Akshay before he was a director with a Rs 100-crore franchise machine behind him. Shetty was an assistant director on Suhaag and even played Akshay’s duplicate in the 1994 film. When the two finally worked together on Sooryavanshi, Shetty spoke about the lesson he had taken from those early years. “With him, it is the maturity to deal with people. He doesn’t lose his temper. He lets go off a lot of things. And the kind of discipline he has!” Shetty told India Today. But the line that says more than the punctuality and fitness is this: “Everybody knows he gets up early and comes to set on time and finishes the film early, but the way he conducts himself, despite being such a massive star, is what amazes me. A lot of newcomers should learn this from him.”

It is a compliment about the person other people have to work with.

5. THE DIRECTOR DOESN’T HAVE TO CHASE HIM

For AR Murugadoss, who directed Akshay in Holiday, the advantage was not merely that Akshay arrived on time. It was that he arrived ready to do the work. “It is sheer discipline on his part. He remains fresh for every shoot, is never late on the sets, and reports to work at whatever time the director wants him to come. He understands what’s needed from him, and finishes his scenes quickly,” Murugadoss told Forbes India.

There is a reason that he has endured. “Finishes his scenes quickly” can sound like a small compliment until you remember how many departments are waiting for an actor to get through a scene. The faster the principal photography moves, the sooner the entire machine moves on.

6. HE MAKES NEWCOMERS FORGET THEY’RE WORKING WITH SOMEONE WITH DECADES OF EXPERIENCE

Sargun Mehta came into Bollywood as a newcomer to Hindi cinema, playing a police officer opposite Akshay. She has admitted that when she first met him, she was too intimidated to speak. Akshay, she recalled, quickly picked up on it. “He used to tell me, ‘Tu bolti nahi hai kya?’ and I was thinking, how am I supposed to tell him that I am so scared?” Sargun recalled. What followed was less about reassuring her with words and more about changing the atmosphere around her. “He makes his co-actors feel so comfortable and is very easy to work with. Even on the sets while shooting he will make everything comfortable for you.”

She also noticed that he never tried to control how his co-stars performed. “He is very appreciative, and always gives a free hand at improvising or doing as many takes as you want to.” And Sargun said Akshay would make sure the entire team had dinner together so that everyone developed a bond. “On the next day on set it doesn’t seem like, ‘Oh my God, whom am I working with?’”

For a newcomer, that can make the difference between being intimidated by someone with aura and stardom and simply working with a co-actor. And it says something about Kumar’s understanding of a set: the hierarchy may exist, but it doesn’t have to dominate the room.

7. THE PRODUCER DOESN’T GET LEFT WAITING OUTSIDE

Akshay has spoken about the producer’s position in unusually practical terms. In a Forbes India profile, he explained why he thinks so much about the person financing the film. “In this industry, it’s not about how good an actor you are. It’s all about how good you are to your producer. In my nearly 26 years in this business, I have learnt this. It’s how well you protect your producer that matters.”

He had an even more vivid way of putting it: “The producer is standing outside your van which he gave you! How the hell did he land outside? That is one thing I have told Vedant [Bali, his business manager]… never make a producer stand outside. Call him in first.”

That mindset also explains why he has repeatedly described himself as a “producer’s actor”. It isn’t particularly glamorous. It is, however, an unusually clear understanding of whose money, time and risk are tied up in the production.

8. THE PEOPLE AROUND HIM DON’T HAVE TO BE AFRAID OF HIM

Aanand L Rai offered perhaps the most straightforward description of Akshay when they worked together on Atrangi Re. It wasn’t about punctuality, fitness or box office. It was about how easy he was to read and work with. “Akshay’s honesty made me want to work with him again after this film. He’s the most uncomplicated actor I’ve ever met. He never tries to disguise himself. So, it’s easy to understand and read him. For a director like me, that simplicity is very charming,” Rai told Hindustan Times.

That word uncomplicated might actually be the most useful way to understand all the other stories. The punctuality, the preparation, the eight-hour rule, the attention to safety, the producer-first approach: none of it appears to be a performance of professionalism. It is simply how Akshay has chosen to work.

And perhaps that is why the stories from sets have remained remarkably similar across the decades. Different directors, different films, different departments but the same Akshay Kumar.

Akshay Kumar and Vipul Amrutlal Shah’s upcoming sci-fi alien survival-action thriller Samuk is steadily building an intriguing and, some would say, enviable ensemble. The latest we hear is that Viineet Kumar Siingh is the newest name to come on board the ambitious project.

According to sources close to the development, the Mukkabaaz and Gangs of Wasseypur actor is said to be playing a key role in the Kanishk Varma directorial. While the makers are keeping the characters and storyline tightly under wraps, Siingh’s reported addition brings a distinctly physical and intense performer into the film’s ensemble.

“Viineet has a certain rawness and physicality, and the director felt he was the perfect choice for this character. His presence brings a different energy to the ensemble, and the part requires an actor who can bring intensity without overplaying it,” reveals a source.

The source further adds, “The casting of Samuk is being shaped by a clear creative vision. The makers aren’t simply looking at conventional choices; they want performers who can bring credibility and individuality to this world. Viineet is known to immerse himself physically into his characters, so he is sure to blend into the world and make it his own. Siingh will join Kumar on a major mission in the film. His role is pivotal to the narrative, with the two characters sharing one of the strongest bonds in the film.”

Siingh has built a reputation for powerful performances, most notably in Anurag Kashyap’s Mukkabaaz, while his role as Danish Khan in Gangs of Wasseypur remains one of his early career-defining performances. His filmography has since spanned dramas, thrillers, and action-oriented projects, including Gold, Gunjan Saxena: The Kargil Girl, Saand Ki Aankh, Jaat, and Chhaava, among others.

Produced by Vipul Amrutlal Shah under Sunshine Pictures and co-produced by Aashin A. Shah, Samuk marks the reunion of Akshay Kumar and producer Vipul Amrutlal Shah after a gap of 13 years. Directed by Kanishk Varma, the ambitious project has reportedly been in development for over two years and is currently being shot in London.

Mounted as a large-scale theatrical spectacle, Samuk is said to blend science fiction with visceral action, survival, and horror elements, creating a distinct genre world for Indian cinema. With Akshay Kumar headlining the film and an increasingly interesting ensemble being put together, the makers are carefully keeping details of the characters and storyline under wraps.

The film is expected to release in 2027 and is being positioned as a major genre spectacle from Indian cinema.

For now, the question remains: what role will Viineet Kumar Siingh play in Samuk? The makers, however, are in no hurry to answer that one.

Over a spanning two-decade collaboration across six films, the actor-producer dynamic between Akshay Kumar and #VipulAmrutlalShah has stood out for its refusal to stick to a single formula. From family dramas and heist thrillers to cross-cultural romances and action-comedies, the duo’s filmography showcases a continuous commitment to genre experimentation.

Here is how film lovers and fans rank their six-film journey so far:

1. Aankhen (2002)

Shah’s directorial debut remains a high-water mark for their partnership. Featuring an ensemble cast including Amitabh Bachchan, Akshay Kumar, Arjun Rampal, and Paresh Rawal, this audacious heist thriller saw Kumar play a blind man recruited to rob a bank, stepping away from standard commercial hero tropes into a darker narrative space.

2. Namastey London (2007)

Five years after Aankhen, Shah directed Kumar in a defining romantic role as Arjun Singh, a Punjabi man navigating a cross-cultural relationship alongside Katrina Kaif. The film established itself as one of Shah’s most successful directorial ventures and proved the pair’s versatility.

3. Singh Is Kinng (2008)

Produced by Shah and directed by Anees Bazmee, this blockbuster comedy featured Kumar as the well-meaning yet accident-prone Happy Singh. The film became one of the biggest commercial successes of their professional collaboration.

4. Holiday: A Soldier Is Never Off Duty (2014)

Directed by A.R. Murugadoss and produced by Shah, this military action-thriller saw Kumar as an army officer tracking down sleeper cells. The production featured international action design by British stunt coordinator Greg Powell.

5. Waqt: The Race Against Time (2005)

Shifting gears from suspense to family drama, Shah directed and produced this emotional father-son story starring Amitabh Bachchan and Akshay Kumar, cementing the pattern of shifting genres with every release.

6. Action Replayy (2010)

This time-travel romantic comedy starring Kumar and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan explored fantasy elements and period settings. While a quiet performer at the box office, it remains remembered for its popular soundtrack and vibrant aesthetic.

Looking Ahead to ‘Samuk’

Their upcoming seventh collaboration, Samuk, ventures into alien survival horror. Directed by Kanishk Varma and produced by Vipul Amrutlal Shah alongside co-producer Aashin A. Shah, the film combines grounded action, military elements, and practical creature effects. Academy Award-nominated creature designer Alec Gillis (Alien, Predator) has designed the film’s creature, with action orchestrated by British stunt coordinator Luke Tumber.

Producer-director Vipul Amrutlal Shah has carved out a distinct legacy in Hindi cinema over the last two decades. Refusing to stick to safe, repetitive formulas, his banner Sunshine Pictures has consistently introduced high-concept themes to mainstream audiences. Now, Shah is gearing up for his most ambitious project to date: Samuk. Directed by Kanishk Varma and starring #AkshayKumar, this large-scale survival-action thriller bridges military realism with alien mythology—an uncharted domain in Indian cinema.

Before this sci-fi spectacle arrives on screens, here is a look back at the pivotal cinematic milestones that define Vipul Amrutlal Shah’s evolving legacy.

1. Aankhen (2002) “It all began with a story nobody saw coming.”

Long before streaming platforms popularized niche thrillers, Vipul Amrutlal Shah made an audacious directorial debut with Aankhen. Adapted from his own Gujarati play Andhalo Pato, this heist thriller built around three visually impaired men broke traditional Bollywood norms by skipping a standard romantic subplot entirely. Anchored by powerful performances from Akshay Kumar, Amitabh Bachchan, and Sushmita Sen, the film became a critical and box-office success. Demonstrating sharp narrative instincts early on, Shah even shot multiple endings, delivering a righteous conclusion for domestic theaters while leaving international audiences with a chilling, ambiguous cliffhanger.

2. Waqt: The Race Against Time (2005) “Next came a deeply moving take on family, relationships, and time.”

Pivoting effortlessly from a slick thriller to raw human emotion, Shah directed Waqt: The Race Against Time, a mainstream family drama driven entirely by a ticking clock. Rather than relying on typical melodrama, the film explored the complex dynamics of a dying father (Amitabh Bachchan) using tough-love tactics to force his reckless son (Akshay Kumar) into maturity before time ran out. Balancing heartbreak with vibrant festive energy, the movie gave cinema-goers the timeless anthem “Do Me A Favor, Let’s Play Holi” while delivering a poignant story on mortality.

3. Namastey London (2007) “Soon after, love crossed borders.”

With Namastey London, Shah produced and directed a romantic drama that re-engineered the NRI genre for a modernizing India. While 1990s cinema often focused on overseas Indians yearning for home, Shah flipped the script by bringing a thoroughly Westernized British-Indian woman (Katrina Kaif) to the heartlands of Punjab. Starring Akshay Kumar in one of his most iconic roles, the film became a massive worldwide blockbuster, celebrated for transforming a charming romance into an empowering tribute to modern Indian identity with a timeless soundtrack.

4. Singh Is Kinng (2008) “What followed was a grand celebration of comedy.”

Stepping exclusively into the producer’s chair, Shah scaled up commercial comedy for a global audience with Singh Is Kinng. By placing a well-meaning Punjabi villager in the middle of the Australian underworld, the film cleverly converted mobster tropes into a high-energy family blockbuster. Breaking opening-week box office records, the movie left a lasting mark on pop culture—from popularizing neon turbans to securing a historic music collaboration with global rap icon Snoop Dogg for the title track.

5. Action Replayy (2010) “Eventually, the storytelling took a leap into playing with time itself.”

Never one to stay in a comfortable lane, Shah directed Action Replayy, a retro sci-fi romantic comedy based on time travel. The story followed a son (Aditya Roy Kapur) who travels back to the 1970s to rekindle his parents’ (Akshay Kumar and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan) romance. Serving as a colorful visual tribute to 1970s aesthetics, Shah recreated the era’s bright styling and retro charm, showcasing his ongoing commitment to experimenting with distinct visual directions.

6. Holiday: A Soldier Is Never Off Duty (2014) “The focus shifted to high-stakes action, patriotism, and a whole new world.”

With Holiday: A Soldier Is Never Off Duty, produced by Shah, the focus shifted toward gritty realism and national security. Moving away from stylized action, the film introduced Indian audiences to the concept of sleeper cells, highlighting covert battles fought by off-duty military officers. Starring Akshay Kumar as a tactical officer, the box-office hit introduced modern hand-to-hand combat styles to mainstream Hindi cinema and set a benchmark for tightly paced action thrillers.

7. Samuk (Upcoming) “Now, the journey steps into a domain never explored before.”

With Samuk, Vipul Amrutlal Shah is mounting his most ambitious project by blending military survival action with extraterrestrial creature mythology. Grounding this narrative in a high-stakes military setting promises an entirely fresh theatrical event. To elevate the film’s international scale, Shah has brought on board Oscar-nominated creature designer Alec Gillis (famed for Aliens and The Predator) to construct a practical, handcrafted alien creature, ensuring Samuk marks a groundbreaking milestone in his evolving cinematic journey.

#AkshayKumar is charting entirely new territory by stepping into the world of extraterrestrial survival action. Filming has officially commenced for Samuk, an ambitious sci-fi survival-action thriller directed by #KanishkVarma and produced by Vipul Amrutlal Shah, bringing together a top-tier global creature and stunt unit to deliver a massive theatrical spectacle.

Produced by Vipul Amrutlal Shah, directed by Varma and co-produced by Aashin A. Shah, the film is being mounted as a large-scale pan-Indian theatrical with global production ambitions. The project has been in development for over two years, with Varma and Shah building a world that combines military realism, survival horror and alien mythology. Shah has built his reputation as a producer who understands the pulse of the audience without necessarily chasing the obvious formula. His filmography has moved across thrillers, family dramas, romance, comedy, action and now alien survival, but the common thread has been his instinct for finding commercial stories with a strong hook. He has also shown a willingness to back ideas that require scale and technical ambition, while surrounding them with the right creative talent.

Talking about the movie, Shah said, “After a gap of 13 years, starting a new journey with Akshay Kumar today is a very, very joyful, happy and proud moment for all of us. The ambition to create something better and bigger every single time with Akshay Sir has been the hallmark of our journey. We have challenged each other in many ways to keep pushing ourselves and do better, and this time, the challenge is bigger than ever. I hope we create something together that people will absolutely love.”

With Samuk, that instinct takes him into uncharted territory, pairing an inherently massy Indian star with an internationally assembled creature and action team and then build the production around it.

What sets Samuk apart is the decision to go old-school with its monster. Academy Award-nominated creature effects designer Alec Gillis, who worked on the Alien and Predator franchises and Alien: Romulus, has designed the film’s central alien. The film also onboards international technicians including British action director Luke Tumber, who is designing and directing the action to offer the film a physically demanding action language.

Actor #GurpreetGhuggi, who shared the screen space with Kumar in films like Singh Is Kingg (2008) and Cuttputtli (2022), says, “Akshay paaji got in touch with me, asking how he could help. Since people were getting assistance with food supplies, I suggested that the real help would be needed after the floods, for those whose houses were destroyed.”

Speaking of Akshay Kumar’s pledge to build 100 homes, he adds, “I assembled a team to identify the people in need. These houses are mostly in the Gurdaspur and Amritsar districts. The work on the pending houses will be completed soon. It was all Akshay paaji’s doing.” The project has been carried out under the aegis of the Hari Om Foundation, founded by Akshay in memory of his late father, Hari Om Bhatia.

Recalling Akshay Kumar’s generosity during times of grave need, he shares, “Akshay paaji sirf on-screen hi Haiwaan play kar rahe hain (in his upcoming film), real life mein he is a wonderful insaan. Woh nahin chahte thhe unka naam saamne aaye. He said, ‘Iss mein koi badi baat nahin hai. Help karna aur phir logon ko batana, mujhe theek nahin lagta.”
