*He remembers vividly the day the crew returned to Mehsampur to recreate the death scene of Chamkila, a moment so raw in Punjab’s collective memory that even decades later, the air around it feels altered*. _“We were shooting the death scene at the exact spot where Chamkila was killed,” Imtiaz recalls. “What struck all of us was how nothing had changed. The house, the patch of ground outside it, even the koti where he had eaten lunch before he was shot, everything was exactly the same after 34 years.” After piecing together accounts from locals, the team located the precise point where Chamkila had collapsed. “Watching Diljit playing Chamkila shoot for the scene and fall to his death on that same spot, it was bizarre, surreal, almost unsettling,”_ Imtiaz admits.

*But the film had moments of electric joy too, Imtiaz adds, as he talks about the one memory that comes to his mind every time he talks about the film*, _“the most unique aspect of this film was the live performances of Diljit Dosanjh and Parineeti, especially in the akhadas. For Imtiaz, who had never filmed live singing before, these scenes were a revelation. “It was challenging, but it turned into something spectacular,” he says. With live musicians onstage, and Diljit and Parineeti singing in real time before large crowds in recreated concert setups across Punjab, the energy was unmatched. Every word you hear in the film was recorded live. Nothing has been altered. The music you feel is the music we felt in that moment.”_

Through these memories, it becomes clear that for Imtiaz Ali, the making of Amar Singh Chamkila was not merely a creative project but a deeply immersive experience. The film’s emotional weight, its musical electricity and its meticulous authenticity all grew out of moments like these; moments that shaped not just the film, but the people who made it.

Today, as the film stands nominated at the International Emmy Awards for TV Movie/Mini-Series and Diljit Dosanjh earns a nomination for Best Performance, the journey has come full circle. Imtiaz and Diljit have already left for New York, carrying with them not just the hopes of their team, but the spirit of Chamkila himself. The winners will be announced on 24th November at the gala ceremony in New York, but for those who lived this story behind the camera, the emotional victory was found long before the red carpet.

Netflix unveils the trailer for its most awaited musical spectacle of the year, Amar Singh Chamkila, written and directed by Imtiaz Ali. The film charts the untold true story of Punjab’s original rockstar of the masses, the highest record-selling artist of his time, who emerged from the shadows of poverty and rose to the heights of popularity in the 80s due to the sheer power of his music, angering many on the way, which finally led to his assassination at a young age of 27.

With the maestro AR Rahman helming the music for the film and Irshad Kamil penning the lyrics, the audience will once again get to witness the magic of a Rahman – Imtiaz – Irshad collaboration, after nine years! It is not surprising to see the songs of the film -Ishq Mitaye and Naram Kaalja, released earlier this month have been ruling charts all across. Adding to the excitement, both Diljit and Parineeti have lent their voices to some of the original Chamkila songs in Punjabi. For the first time, the film will showcase live music recordings done on locations capturing the rawness and the exuberance of each moment as Diljit & Parineeti sing live in the Akhadaas.

Reflecting on the journey of creating Amar Singh Chamkila, Imtiaz Ali shares, “Stories of young musicians that challenge the norms of society, who see unprecedented success and then have violent ends is unfortunately a worldwide phenomenon. The life and times of Chamkila raised important questions for society but ultimately it is a celebration of the life of an artist, the story of a musician who could never give up his first love – Music. In Netflix, Amar Singh Chamkila found the ideal partner who was both passionate and able to take the film to the most diverse audience.”

Ruchikaa Kapoor Sheikh, Director of Original Films, Netflix India added, “Telling unique and deeply rooted local stories is at the heart of our storytelling efforts at Netflix. Collaborating with Imtiaz who has masterfully chronicled the life of Amar Singh Chamkila is nothing short of inspiring. Besides including Chamkila’s iconic original songs in the film, A. R. Rahman has composed stellar music for it. We are excited for our audiences to see Diljit and Parineeti bring to life the timelessness of Amar Singh Chamkila.”

The film is produced by Mohit Choudhary, Select Media Holdings LLP, Saregama, and Window Seat Films. The music of the film is on Saregama.
