“When the entire world was practically shut down because of the Coronavirus pandemic in early 2020, most people ended up spending most part of their lives online. Getting comfortable with working from home, seeking entertainment on streaming services, learning new skills online, indulging in online shopping, the lockdown made us adapt to changes, which we never thought were possible. Come 2023 and we find ourselves thriving on the opportunities the Internet has to offer. However, like everything else, this too has its share of disadvantages. Online safety has become a matter of great concern, across the globe, especially given the number of people who are now using the Internet,” he says.

The Internet, according to Ambuj, has truly transformed how young people learn, socialise and communicate today. But the pressure to share intimate images, rising cases of cyber-bullying and cyber scams, exposure to content that may promote self-harm, anorexia etc., make the youth more vulnerable and puts them at a greater risk.

“The majority of young people today use smartphones for everything. Numerous apps are downloaded every day, thereby exposing sensitive personal information. With the boom in online shopping, financial information is knowingly or unknowingly shared to make online payments and thereby increasing the risk of sharing sensitive data. Apart from this, online grooming, cyber-bullying and peer pressure, online social abuse and exploitation, and fatal online challenges such as the Blue Whale Challenge, which claimed over hundred lives across the world, are constant threats,” he adds.

Ambuj encourages people to check the reliability and credibility of online websites before indulging too much. “One should know the importance of privacy and that it is ‘not okay’ to share their pictures with strangers or be harassed, bullied or humiliated online. I think the need of the hour is to inculcate good online habits among the youth and develop their digital intelligence and socio-emotional skills. This Safe Internet Day, let us help them recognise online threats and safeguard ourselves against it,” he ends.

Actor Ambuj Dixit is very fond of his pet dog. He has an 8-year-old labrador retriever named Romeo who is also his first pet and his best buddy.

“I always wanted a dog since I was a kid but could never convince my parents about it and by the time they said yes I was about to leave my home for my graduation. So in Mumbai, after years of living in a studio apartment, when I shifted to a little bigger place, I decided to have a dog. I got him from a pet shop. I always wanted a labrador as a kid because of their goofy and lovable personality. Finally, Romeo came into my life,” says the actor, known for his short film Antara and web series Damaged.

Romeo’s entry changed his life completely. “It felt as if he was the friend I always wanted. He kind of filled the void of that missing friend from my childhood. He also made me more responsible and realised that it’s not easy to have a dog. One has to be very responsible in taking care of them as they become a part of your family,” he adds.

Pets, especially dogs, show us joy and make us laugh, and even listen to us like they know exactly what we’re saying. For Ambuj, Romeo too is his stress buster.

“Having a dog or any pet is experiencing joy and enrichment. Romeo acts as a great source of my happiness. No matter how tired and stressed out I feel, when I return after a long day at work, the affection he gives me is bound to make me feel better and happy,” he says.

Ambuj’s favourite time with Romeo is when he takes him out for a drive in his car, something that his pet also enjoys a lot. So, the duo often do this to spend some quality time together.

Being an animal lover, the actor wants to do something for the welfare of dogs in future. “I would like to offer as much help as I can to all the dogs who are either sick or abandoned or need shelter and food. I wish to create a place for them where they can live and enjoy their life to the fullest. It is still a far-fetched dream but I hope it will come true sometime soon,” he adds.

In India, cruelty towards strays seems to be on the rise. Animal welfare ministry as well as activists are working towards it.

“That’s one of the most inhumane things to ever do to animals. As much as cruelty exists towards them I also see there are many people who care for their betterment and do their best possible way to provide them with food and affection. I think over the years there has been more and more awareness towards the issue and they are being taken care of but more needs to be done. The change is coming and will continue, all we have to do is keep working towards it. There should be stricter laws towards any kind of cruelty happening against animals,” he signs off.

“Big Boss is a show loved by many. I myself have been following it. Just like groups are formed inside the Bigg Boss house, you also see fans outside the house forming groups based on their favourites. That is what makes it so popular among people. And, yes, I would love to do the show if offered. Bigg Boss is a show about extremities, and it’s here that people get to truly explore and test their limits as human beings. That is what makes me want to do the show,” he says.
In the show, Ambuj had liked Abdu aka Abdu Rozik, who is a popular Tajik Singer, musician, blogger, and boxer. He sings Hindi songs very well and is part of the film, Kisika Bhai Kisiki Jaan. Abdu recently returned to the Bigg Boss house.

“Yes, Abdu is my favourite in the show. He is a very talented and genuine guy. Whatever he expresses on the show it’s from his heart and there is no sense of falsehood in it. I really hope he wins the show. It’s because of his talent and generosity that he has worked with greats like AR Rahman sir and now with Salman Khan sir in his upcoming movie,” he adds.

“The experience of making Damaged was superb. First time I did a role where I was playing a guy who looks innocent but turns out to be this bad guy who betrays a girl’s trust when least expected,” he adds.

Love Crisis too was fun, according to the actor. “My role was of a person who is caught up between two women who love him deeply but he is unsure of who is the one he should trust. It was a role that had a lot of layers to it, layers of trust, betrayal, insecurity, honesty, etc,” he says.

His journey as an assistant director has also been an interesting one. He shares that working in Kalank was superb and surreal.

“Never did I think I’d get an opportunity to assist in a grand film like that. There were moments when I used to get lost in the magic of grandiosity watching superheroes like Sanjay Dutt, Madhuri Dixit-Nene, and Varun performing in front of me. It was an experience I can never forget. Seeing Sanjay Dutt for the first time on set was a starstruck moment for me. I remember very well there was this scene that was supposed to happen between Sanjay Dutt and Varun, Sanjay Dutt was already there and Varun was about to come, between that I was supposed to do stand in for him and Sanjay Dutt was standing opposite me. I guess he was there thinking about this scene and kept his hand on my shoulders and asked me my name. I told him I love his film Aatish, to which he just smiled back and said all the best. Working with Madhuri ma’am was yet another star-struck moment for me. Her presence on set is just magical. She is also very humble and one of the most beautiful, talented, and professional actors I have ever come across,” he adds.

So what kind of roles is he looking out for? “I want roles where I feel I can surprise people with my performance. I have always taken up things in my life that seemed strange to other people. Like when I did a small role in Student Of The Year many people discouraged me, but I still did it because it was something different and I felt I could do it and gain something out of it,” he says.

Ambuj is also open to doing television as a lead or parallel lead. “In today’s time, there is opportunity everywhere, and TV is something that has always been there. I mean the biggest superstar of Indian cinema is from TV. I’m an actor, my job is to act, if I get good roles where I can show my talent whether it’s TV, OTT or films, I’ll definitely do it. I don’t believe in terms like typecast and all. I firmly believe in one thing said by Shah Rukh Khan, to get stereotyped you have to get cast first. And I have never forgotten that,” he ends.
