The whole incident was so interesting and humorous because both of us were laughing about it that the Badshah of Bollywood learning his own steps from me. I know how eagerly all of us are waiting for his film Pathaan. There is a huge expectation and I know he will not disappoint us. Actor #AmitSarin, who resides in USA now, recently had the opportunity to watch the film The Last Film Show which also has got the Oscar nomination this year. He was invited to witness the magic of the film. Amit is so thrilled with the film that he is not getting tired while talking about the film. He says, ”It’s a masterpiece. Beautiful and simple storytelling yet so powerful. It reminded me of my own journey of coming from a small town and settling in metros. For me, The Last Film Show highlights how dreams are cultivated and how they must be supported to be realised one day.”

Amit also shares his equation with the director of the film Pan Nalin. He adds, ”Knowing Pan as a friend, I can tell you this is his autobiographical journey. His childhood was so brilliantly depicted by child actor Bhavin Rabari, and look how far Pan has come today. He is so close to winning an Oscar for our country. It only reiterates that each and everyone must have a dream and pursue it. What I liked most about the film is how brilliantly the story told of a 9-year old Samay, set in the rural area has been captured by the cinematographer. The filmmakers did this to bring out the finest nuances, to transcend us, the audience, to the world of a dreamer and lover of cinema,. Many frames in the film are reminding me of legendary storyteller Satyajit Ray.

I can never forget the apt background score to support the narrative. I have high hopes that the film should win Oscar.”

Speaking about his take on the talented Bhavin, he further adds,”Bhavin is a raw bundle of energy, hilarious, yet truly authentic and majestic. We had fun together taking about his journey from a small town to LA.”

Directed by Amit’s wife Vineesha Arora Sarin, the feature film deals with suicide prevention and mental health.

“Vineesha approached Jubin as she wanted to show a softer side of my character, Johnny Morris, who is in pain due to the losses in his life. Jubin almost instantly loved the story and just connected with the film,” said Amit.

“The song has been composed and written by Scott Turek, an independent musician from Nashville who’s also breaking into Hollywood with this project. The song is called Wheels of Karma. It’s of an American folk, inspirational genre. Anybody who listens to it can’t believe the singer behind it isn’t American. Jubin has done a brilliant job in this rendition which is going to be a big hit with audiences,” he added.

It had its world premiere in Los Angeles in July. “It was overwhelming and extremely humbling. We were thankful and relieved to see how well the film was received by one and all. They were blown away with the film and its message. Several Hollywood dignitaries attended it and they had some kind words like ‘it is poetry in motion,’ and it is a ‘visual emotion,’ ‘the lead actor glued the entire film by his brilliant performance.‘ Talking about the importance of the subject of his film, Amit said, “We just don’t give mental health the importance it deserves. People are so uncomfortable talking about their actual mental state due to taboos. We are living in the most challenging times that our generation has seen. It is okay to bear your heart out to someone you trust and care about. It’s okay to talk about your true feelings. And one must share their innermost emotions now more than ever so that they don’t hit the point of depression which may, in some cases, lead to suicide. And all of this is preventive. It’s one of the main takeaways from the film.”

On working with his wife, he said, “Knowing each other the way we do, helped us build the lethal & unique combination of actor and director, who can read each other’s mind to get the best outcome. She is extremely talented and winning the best narrative feature film award for this film speaks for itself. She’s a brilliant storyteller with an excellent sense of music with an eye for visual treat “ Amit also won the Best Actor Award for Between Mountains at the 9th Annual AFI World Peace Initiative and the 3rd Annual Karl Bardosh Cellphone Humanitarian Awards held in Cannes, France.

There was no extra crew while working on the film. “One of our chief guests, professor Karl Bardosh, founder of Cell Phone Cinema and Awards, on the night of the premiere, said that Vineesha reminded him of Robert Rodriguez who wrote, produced, edited and directed El Mariachi. He called her a powerhouse, one-woman army behind this picture who did it all. So I think that speaks volumes,” shared Amit. Vineesha shot, wrote and directed the film when they were facing strict lockdown in Los Angeles during the peak of the pandemic last year. “This wasn’t a part of the plan. We simply went on a family vacation that turned into a film! So there was no pre-planning, location scouting, or even scripting done beforehand. And that’s no mean feat,” said Amit.

“Vineesha knew what she wanted to shoot after she was shooting random scenes with me. It was a spontaneous film if there can ever be one. But we managed it, she took the shots on her phone as there was no real equipment on vacation. She used nature as much as possible, like the abundant sunlight we take for granted sometimes. That became the natural light source. Shooting without a single other crew member was no mean feat, but we pulled it off. She directed me, I acted. This is what brings out the rawness in the character. Even I was surprised at the levels of emotions I could touch without all that extra equipment and planning. It was quite liberating actually. And that’s the charm of this picture,” he added. This is his wife’s first feature film.

“She has directed short films in the past. As far as I can remember, she’d wanted to direct and this is just the beginning of her directorial journey. She’s got very exciting stories to share with the world, and I hope you’ll all be able to enjoy them soon,” said the proud husband.

“The one thing we generally forget is that life and death is a cycle. Death isn’t as definitive as it seems. I think the only way to cope with untimely death is through self realisation and to accept God’s will. There’s a line in my film Between Mountains. It says, ‘I cannot reason what I don’t understand, so I simply believe’,” he shared from his movie for which he won the Best Actor Award at the 9th Annual AFI World Peace Initiative and the 3rd Annual Karl Bardosh Cellphone Humanitarian Awards held in Cannes, France.

“One has to believe that death isn’t the real end, but a mere change of cycle. We all have a purpose and only the Almighty can give it that direction. Another line in the film says, ‘I mustn’t believe this is the end.. for every end will begin again.’ The film very beautifully portrays this message through poetry and visual opulence,” he added. Amit feels there are many ways to cope with loss. “One must speak to a therapist or family or someone who can truly guide them. But reaching out is the key. One must talk about it,” he said.

“I miss my India as I was born and brought up in India. I shifted due to my career, and life is good. Pandemic has changed the way we look at life,” said Amit, who is producing a Hollywood project titled “Tiger Heart”. Sharing his memories of Independence Day, he said, “In school, flag hosting used to take place. When I became a celebrity, I attended many events to host the flag.”

Commenting on India, the “Nisha Aur Uske Cousins” actor said, “India is a progressive nation and has been fighting the pandemic efficiently. Still, there are some major issues that I feel need to be addressed. Pollution and unemployment are areas that we need to work on.”

On a lighter note, he has some favourite patriotic songs. “My two favourite songs are ‘Chithi Aayi Hai, Aayi Hai, Chitthi Aayi Hai’ from the film ‘Naam’ and ‘Ae Mere Wattan Ke Logo’ by Lata Mangeshkar. My eyes become moist when I listen to these songs,” he said.
