Dancing Shiva Films, Kingsmen Productions and Zee Studios came together to make the announcement on the occasion of #SavitribaiPhules birth anniversary today.

Directed by national award-winning filmmaker #AnanthMahadevan, the film stars #PratikGandhi as Mahatma Jyotirao Phule and #Patralekhaa as his wife, Savitribai Phule, bringing to life the inspiring journey of this iconic couple who championed equality and education in India.

“This is our humble tribute to a great son and daughter of India,” said Mahadevan. “The film is a must-watch for the Y-generation, as it offers more than what history books have touched upon. It’s an immersive journey back in time, showcasing how these visionaries shaped our nation’s history.”

Phule narrates the struggles and triumphs of Jyotirao and Savitribai Phule, who started a social movement against caste discrimination and gender inequality. From establishing India’s first school for girls in Pune in 1848 to their revolutionary efforts in promoting education and social reform under British colonial rule, the Phules’ story is all about unyielding courage and resilience to change the status quo of India’s rural society of the past.

The film’s poster, unveiled last year on the 196th birth anniversary of Jyotirao Phule, garnered widespread acclaim, building anticipation for the cinematic retelling of their lives.

Speaking about the film’s release, Patralekhaa shared, “I am deeply honored to portray Savitribai Phule in this film. Alongside Jyotirao Phule, she laid the very foundation for modern education and social equality in India. On her birth anniversary today, it’s only fitting that we announce the release of Phule. I’m thrilled that audiences will soon witness their inspiring journey on the big screen, and hopefully, be moved by their extraordinary courage and vision.”

Mahadevan emphasises, “We have stuck to the historical facts while making this film but it is not just a historical narrative. The film is a call to recognise the sacrifices and values that continue to shape our society.”

The film based on true-life characters and their experience will be a gripping, funny yet emotionally inspiring adventure of two inhabitants who pose the most baffling question on existence yet. Their journey turns out to be an uplifting spiritual cinematic experience. Produced by Dinesh Bansal (Imagine Entertainment & Media Pvt Ltd), Ananth Mahadevan (Ananth Mahadevan Films), GK Aggarwal, the film also has Suresh Vishwakarma, Smita Tambe, Jaywant Wadkar, Abhinav Patekar as other artists in key roles.

“I always wanted to make cinema of substance, something that would be socially relevant and close to life. I found AATA VEL ZALI as an issue that could shake up every generation and make them rethink life and existence all over again. Besides, it is a subject that has never been debated before. All of which made it an ideal film to begin with” said Producer Dinesh Bansal.

“In a way it is the other side of Hrishikesh Mukherjee’s Anand. Here the issue is of not laughing at death but smiling through the end of life. Active euthanasia was a subject that struck me during the pandemic when the world began to look at life and death differently. Even the youth began to have a more pragmatic view of life than a materialistic one. Preview/ festival audiences all over the world vindicated this when they were numbed into silence after the film and along with the tears of the elderly, the youth admitted that this was a viewpoint to be considered seriously,” said Ananth Narayan Mahadevan, who is in the triple role as writer, director and producer of the film.

‘Aata Vel Zaali’ has already been selected for many international festivals like Dallas International Film Festival, Pune International Film Festival (Best Actor), Rajasthan International Film Festival (Best Film and Best Director) and popular Jagran Film Festival.

Pradeep Khanvilkar is the cinematographer of the film, while Kush Tripathy, Ananth Narayan Mahadevan have edited it. Sync Sound & Sound Design is by Bhagat Singh Rathod, while Background Score is by Sanjoy Chowdhary. Aparna Shah has shouldered the responsibility of the Costumes while Marathi adaptation is by Mahendra PATIL.

Anant Mahadevan is an Indian national award-winning film director for Mee Sindhutai Sapkal (2010), and is known in the industry for his acclaimed films like Gour Hari Dastaan: The Freedom File, Rough Book, Doctor Rakhmabai. All these films are official selections at several international Film festivals. His Mai Ghat : Crime No 103/2005 (2020) has been the Indian Broadcasting Ministry’s selection from India for the Marche Du Film section of the Cannes Film Festival.

His film ‘Bittersweet’ was an Official Selection at the Busan International Film Festival in 2020 and was nominated for the prestigious Kim Jiseok award. His new film ‘The Storyteller’ is an adaptation of Satyajit Ray’s original Bengali story and is an Official Selection in Competition at the Busan International Film Festival and the IFFI[Goa] in 2022.

His first book Once Upon a Prime Time has got rave reviews and awards. It is about his 40 years in Indian television.

Jio Studios today unveiled the trailer of its upcoming film The Storyteller starring powerhouse actors Paresh Rawal, Adil Hussain, Tannishtha Chatterjee and Revathy.

The Storyteller produced in association with Purpose Entertainment and Quest Films has been selected in Competition at the prestigious Busan International Film Festival, South Korea and the film will have its World Premiere at the Festival and will be contending for the revered ‘Kim Jiseok’ award.

An elated Ananth Mahadevan shares, “The selection of The Storyteller at the Busan International Film Festival in Competition is indeed prestigious and is a big step forward for Indian cinema in meeting global standards. The filming of an original story by Satyajit Ray has been both challenging and rewarding and will bring to the world a first feature top lining him in the credits after his demise. It will be a befitting tribute to the master as we commemorate his centenary year.”

Based on a short story by the legendary filmmaker Satyajit Ray and hailed as the Original among all Originals, the film tells the story of a wealthy businessman who hires a storyteller to help get over his insomnia; turning more intriguing as twists are added to it. The original Bengali short story Golpo Boliye Tarini Khuro is one among the series of stories written by Ray, based on the enigmatic character Tarini Khuro, that he created.

The 27th Busan International Film Festival will take place from 5-14 October 2022.
