It has been a decent time for me work-wise!” he says, adding, “I have finished one project which I am not supposed to talk about, that is like an open secret! We will most probably be shooting the next one abroad. It is a very interesting script. It’s a younger thought process which I appreciate and I am diving into it right now!” he says.

Meanwhile, the actor adds that the pandemic, although extremely challenging, has helped people understand the value of life. “The pandemic did bring people together, more than what it was earlier. Everyone was in a state of vulnerability, no matter who it was. You knew that there was something that could kill us. Everyone was very nice to each other. I still remember, during the first wave, when we were stuck at home, there would be good days and bad days. Apart from that, there was this general sense of calling someone up, knowing that someone could be in a problem,” he says.

“Some of them understand the way it is supposed to be used and for some people it doesn’t matter how to use it. It’s just that, you’re lucky if you’re exposed to the right information and you’ve the understanding of the right things. I also don’t think that too much information is dangerous, but I do believe that wrong information and half truths are dangerous. But of course in these times, the first option is safer. Basically, know what is good for you,” adds the actor.

When asked about the one piece of advice that he would like to give today’s youth, Arslan replies with a smile that he is in no position to give any advice to anybody as he is still facing his own challenges.

“Unlike what it was earlier, today’s youth have good exposure to information and knowledge from all over the world. Even when we were growing up everyone wanted to become a businessman, doctor, actor, engineer, etc, but now there are so many more things to choose from. Earlier the information used to reach us late, now it comes within hours, sometimes within minutes. So, you’ve to be so quick at all times and not take any pressure,” he ends.

On being asked about the film industry being affected, he says, ”Yes, the entertainment industry is affected. Very few films are being made and theatres have mostly remained closed in the last two years. There is a scare amongst the viewers too. But I am hopeful that the industry will recover soon.”

“The industry provides ample opportunities to many who are the sole earners, and if a lockdown is imposed again their survival will get affected. So as the saying goes, the show must go on, we should follow all the precautionary measures and continue working,” Arslan ends.

Q: You debuted in Bollywood with Jia Aur Jia with Kalki Koechlin and Richa Chadha. Share the experience.

Ans: I always wanted to be an actor. I hail from Jammu and I went through lots of auditions, but things were not working out the way I wanted so I shifted to the corporate sector and started doing a job. One fine day I got a call from writer Mudassar Aziz for Jia Aur Jia. Kalki and Richa were very professional and didn’t make me feel like a newcomer. The film was good, but it took more than two years to complete and the film couldn’t do well but it was noticed.

Q: After that, why was there a long break in your professional life?

Ans: After that, the kind of offers which were coming, I didn’t take them up. I realised I had a flair for writing and developed scripts. One was romantic comedy and another was thriller. I haven’t taken any formal training in writing per se, but have learnt to tell a story my way. Both the stories are sold and I’m writing more scripts. Pandemic happened and the entertainment industry was at a standstill for a while, so even that caused delays. Now I’m working on a project which I can’t talk about, things are falling into place.

Q- Why have you been low profile?

Ans- I’m a very private person. I mind my own business. I’m focused on my work. I’m a social person and as normal as anyone else, but I’m not a social media bug. Maybe that makes people think I’m low profile. I’m very much open for relevant interactions even with the media and I do open up with people I hang out with.

Q- What kind of film roles do you want to do?

Ans- I want to do any role which adds value to the script. I have no hang ups about doing only certain kinds of roles. As an actor, the role has to satisfy me as an actor.

Q- OTT is a big platform now. Comment.

Ans – OTT existence cannot be denied and ignored. OTT boon is here. Post-pandemic it is more in the limelight, one can watch stuff on OTT anytime as per one’s convenience. The content quality is good and variety is also there.

Q- How was your experience in working in Mai Hero Boll Raha Hu?

Ans- The experience was fantastic, Ekta had full faith in me and the character, and it really worked for me. I still get lots of compliments for the role of Lala.

Q- What is your idea of happiness?

Ans- Live and let live, it is nice to be important but more important to be nice. Life is in the present neither in the past nor in the future. I need my space and I take it when I need it. Good food, good intelligent company, quality time with myself and acting are what make me happy.

“I did Mystery Man after Jia Aur Jia. Vibha Singh, the director of Mystery Man, called me one day and said that she has a script for a short film where I fit in perfectly. She told me that this is a story of a guy suffering from multiple personality disorder, who is sent on a mission and is tortured brutally when he gets caught,” he says.

Talking about all the attention his nude scene got, we ask Arslan whether he was comfortable performing it and he is quick to answer, “I’m an actor and I go as per the script. As an artist, I don’t have any inhibitions, and I will do it again if required. Before the actual shooting started we were contemplating whether it would be a nude scene or not. The film was shot in 12 hours and I was sitting wearing my underwear shooting another scene when I decided to go with the flow. So I removed it and shot this nude scene. It got okayed in one take. I am happy that the film got appreciated and was nominated for a few awards too.”

Arslan is “hungry for good scripts”. He adds, “Content is the king. Give me a good story and I am ready to go at any length and give my best.”

Sharing his opinion on the short film boom, he says, “Short films are a good way to tell a story. They were always made but got more highlighted during the pandemic as lots of people started watching as well as making short films from home. Short films can be made quickly, budgets are controlled and it is easy to find a platform for them. One can watch short films even on a mobile and it gives an opportunity to showcase your talent as well. Saying more in a limited time frame requires a lot of creativity. While making a short film one has to successfully give out the right message, be particular about storytelling and it should have the right ingredients to connect with the audience.”
