Released on January 26, 2006, Rang De Basanti completed 20 years of its theatrical journey this Republic Day. To mark the milestone, the makers are set to organize a special screening of the film for its cast and crew. The screening which is held on January 30 in Mumbai will be attended by Director Raykesh Omprakash Mehra, Aamir Khan, Siddharth Suryanarayan, Soha Ali Khan, Kunal Kapoor and Atul Kulkarni.

As a true cult classic, the film’s 20th anniversary celebration is sure to be a nostalgic moment for the entire team, who will relive their masterpiece after two decades. Rang De Basanti continues to hold a special place in our hearts, remaining irreplaceable for its fearless approach and its ability to evoke the spirit of patriotism.

Rang De Basanti, directed by Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra, starred Aamir Khan, R Madhavan, Siddharth Suryanarayan, Soha Ali Khan, Sharman Joshi, Kunal Kapoor, Anupam Kher and Atul Kulkarni in key roles. It follows a group of carefree youngsters whose lives change while working on a documentary about freedom fighters. As they step into the shoes of revolutionaries, they awaken to corruption and injustice, prompting them to take a powerful stand that reshapes their lives.

Challenging cliches and redefining how viewers perceive Poets on screen, Anand Tiwari shared his perspective, saying, “We often picture writers and poets in kurta-pajamas, barefoot, carrying a bag. But they can be anything, come from anywhere—even a music school. I wanted Imroz Dehelvi to surprise the audience, to challenge expectations and seeing Arjun Rampal as that poet definitely breaks the stereotype. Arjun is a dear friend who graciously said yes without knowing much about the role. His depth, security, and gravitas are qualities I have seen him portray in so many films and discovered even more so while working with him on Nail Polish—made him the ideal Imroz.”

Forrest Gump showed the main flawed character entering US Army because around that time US Army was recruiting low IQ men to be sent to a long fought Vietnam war. Incidentally they were referred to as McNamara Morons. Indian Army never indulged in any such campaign so the low witted Laal Singh Chaddha entering army raises questions. Also the Indian Army is unable to identify a Pakistani soldier in a Military hospital is questionable.

The film starts with Laal Singh Chaddha (Aamir Khan) narrating his life’s story while travelling in a second class compartment of a train. Though uninterested many join him as he unfolds layers of his life. Laal Singh Chaddha, a handicapped young lad, starts gaining confidence with the help of his childhood friend Rupa D’Souza (Kareena Kapoor Khan) and even breaks away from the shackles to become a fastest runner in the country. As per the family tradition he enters Indian Army and saves lives of fellow soldiers during Kargil war which fetches his a President’s Medal for bravery. Though when his best friend from the army Bala (Naga Chaitanya) gets martyred, he fulfils his dream by starting a Chaddi-Baniyan business which he initially names after his friends’ name but as a marketing strategy changes it to Rupa at the suggestion of a Pakistani soldier whose life he had saved and who joins his business later as a marketing consultant.

While travelling from Pathankot to Chandigarh Laal Singh has Golgappas (pani puri) sitting on a train bench (original had Tom Hanks having chocolates sitting on a street bench) and strikes conversation in his inimitable style with a fellow passenger. The story covers many historic events viz. Operation Blue Star, 1983 Cricket World Cup victory, Indira Gandhi assassination, 1984 Delhi riots, Ayodhya yatra, Babri Masjid demolition, Sushmita Sen’s Miss Universe crowning, Mumbai serial bomb blasts, Kargil war etc which makes the narrative engaging. In the process the film moves from one corner of the country to the other including Kashmir, Ladakh, Kargil, Kerala, Punjab, Delhi etc. cinematography is top notch and so are production values. Pritam’s music mingles well with the narrative but the editor should have kept the film a little short as it’s 164 m runtime is too long, sometimes dragging the film. Aamir Khan confirms once again that he is a perfectionist and delivers a solid performance. But at times it looks like that he’s trying extra hard resulting in his performance looking contrived. At times he reminds viewers of his portrayal in PK. His ‘hmmm’ in between dialogues is sometimes bothersome. Kareena has done a swell job in her multi layered performance. She looks beautiful in all her looks in the film. Mona Singh impresses with an authentic portrayal and Ahmad Ibn Umar too delivers a good performance as a young Laal Singh. Shahrukh Khan’s cameo collects whistles and claps.

Producer Shelna K. And Simmi have co-produced ‘Anya’ with Capitalwoods under the banner of Initiative Films. The film is directed by Simmi Joseph and has the potential to capture the attention of everyone by commenting on an important topic. Simmi is a well-known director in South Indian cinema. He has directed Marathi cinema for the first time through ‘Anya’. In ‘Anya’, Simmi tries to shed light on the very important issue of human trafficking. Human trafficking is a scourge of humanity and a threat to society moving towards progress. If this threat is not eradicated in time, then it will not take long for society to deteriorate. A documentary has been used to present this subject effectively.

Simmi has written the film along with directing and Mahendra Patil has written the dialogues. Cinematography is done by DOP Sajjan Kalathil. The film was made in two languages. Hindi lyrics are written by Dr. Sagar and Sajeev Sarathi, and the Marathi lyrics are penned by Prashant Jamdar. Along with composer Vipin Patwa, who is known for composing melodious compositions in Hindi cinema, Raam nath, Rishi S., And Krishnaraj have composed the lyrics of ‘Anya’. Background music is by Rohit Kulkarni. Nandu Achrekar, Robin, and Raju are the associate directors of the film, while Shekhar Ujjainwal has worked as the production designer. The costume design is by Nilam Shetye and the choreography is by Sabha Mayuri. Thanuj has edited this film.

This film has won two awards, Best Film at the Elvisbenn Film Festival in Sweden, Best First Time Director, and Best Picture at the Falcon International Film Festival (June Edition 2021) in London. The film has received rave reviews at the Toronto Independent Festival and Global Indian International Film Festival.

Naina Jaiswal (Yami Gautam) is a nursery school teacher who returns from a three week leave. In fact she resumes her duty a week in advance to the surprise of everyone at the school. She wants to celebrate one of the students birthday the same day which coincides with her own birthday. The 16 tiny tots in the school are very attached to their Naina teacher and are happy to see her back. She orders cake which is delivered by one of the student’s drivers and she invites him inside the school. The fact of the matter is that she has kept all the students as hostages and calls up local police station informing the same. Her first demand of Rs 5 crores is immediately met by inspector Javed Khan (Atul Kulkarni) and his senior AC Catharine Alvares (Neha Dhupia). Naina’s demand keep increasing and finally she demands to meet the Prime Minister of India Maya Rajguru (Dimple Kapadia). Naina’s day long stand-off with the authorities forms the story.

The title A Thursday reminds one of a film directed by Neeraj Pandey, A Wednesday. Though the latter was taut and terrific, A Thursday, despite holding audiences attention with it’s hostage drama, is not in A Wednesday’s league. But the director Behzad Khambata has infused suspenseful hostage drama in it and has an interesting premise. Some of the situations are far fetched but the film has good intent so it could be ignored. The menacing issue of rape and capital punishment for the guilty is sensitively conveyed through the film. The movie also focuses on police department giving importance to the politicians’ demands rather than giving an ear to the common people’s woes. Also it reveals the functioning of news channels, journalism and the reality behind some of the ‘breaking news’. The background score is a bit jarring at times but otherwise suits the situations projected on screen. The police department’s set ups at the crime scene does remind of hostage dramas in western movies and web series. The delightful cinematography enhances the atmospheric experience.

Yami Gautam excels as Naina and the contrasting behaviour of her character is fine tuned by her. It may be a surprise factor for many but she has shouldered the film ably. Atul Kulkarni is outstanding and his ‘working’ is commendable. Neha Dhupia has played a pregnant cop and she was pregnant in real life when she shot for this film. She is good in her role and Dimple Kapadia too is convincing as PM.

A Thursday has been released on an OTT platform Disney+ Hotstar and is an interesting watch.

Yeh jo sari cheeze aap log bol rahe hai, isse bohot badi picture hai humari!”

Not only that but Kapil Sharma made the guests laugh out loud with his hilarious “tippanis” and quirky questions. The host played the “5 second game” where the guests had to say three things that they like starting with “three things to do before sleeping” or “five things to eat after peeled” in the span of 5 seconds. Kiku Sharda as waqueel and Krushna Abhishek as Sapna also turn up the entertainment notch higher and become the cherry on top of the comedy cake!
