Then came a Marathi film Lai Bhaari, which was Riteish Deshmukh’s Marathi debut film, wherein he played an antagonist and won accolades for his portrayal. Sharad has been part of many films including Hero, Mohenjo Daro, Rocky Handsome, Irada, Bhoomi, Rakshas, Youngraad, Madhuri, Housefull 4, Bhuj etc to name a few.

Interestingly enough Sharad played Shivaji Maharaj’s trusted soldier Baji Prabhu Deshpande in Har Har Mahadev, which too was lauded by everyone. Then his transgender avatar in Laxmii, starring Akshay Kumar, was talk of the town as he played it with utmost authenticity. His recent releases has been Code Name Tiranga, Chor Nikal Ke Bhaga, Chatrapathi. Our Sr Editor Keerti Kadam interacted with Sharad Kelkar and discussed many topics.

These days quite a few films are released on OTT. Your ‘Chor Nikal Ke Bhaga’ too was released digitally. What is your opinion?
These days makers are bringing interesting stories. OTT is a place where film makers can express themselves the way they want to. Also they can make movies without having the box office pressure. Of course, you ought to make a good movie. My Chor Nikal Ke Bhaga was released directly on OTT because it was a commissioned film. It was made for the OTT platform by Netflix. The interesting part is that this movie was declared a big hit and I am happy that OTT releases too are taken seriously by the audiences and the film industry people. CNKB has an interesting plot and where a common viewer’s guess ends, the writer and directors’ verity starts.

The plot is not run of the mill. It has been written well and Amar Kaushik has directed it beautifully. The screenplay is pristine. When I got a narration I was imagining what will happen next. But everything happening later was beyond my imagination. As a character also I was trying to find out who he was or what was he doing in that chaos. I played an interesting character in CNKB and on the whole the film has thrills, chills and entertains heavily. And it’s not a plain thriller, it has heist, it has hijack, so the plot gets interesting as the minutes go by. The sequences in the plane look authentic and the viewers got the realistic feeling. For any actor or a viewer who’s a thriller lover it’s a very intriguing film.

You have been part of different genres. Do you do it consciously?
I’ll say, I am lucky that I get the opportunity to play diversifying characters. I am thankful to my producers and directors for taking risks in investing in me. About changing genres, I have been doing it for the last 18 years. I feel that if I’ll not be able to surprise myself then how will I surprise my audience? The viewers must get surprised with my work. So in a way consciously I try to do different stuff and am fortunate enough for getting that opportunity.

How do you lock your scripts? What’s your preparation process?
Whenever a film is offered to me and if my heart says yes, then I do it. See, it’s important to convince yourself about the character you are playing. If you do not relate to it or don’t believe in it, then there’s no point in playing it. I take my parts seriously and try to project the character in the film. After all these years, one gets an idea about the scripts during the narration.

First and foremost the script is important. Secondly I see what my character is doing in the script, whether it is helping narration move forward etc. Next is the director. I interact with the director to understand about the nuances of the character. Then I think of what I can bring to the table to make this character more interesting. If the director seems rigid, not giving freedom to the actors to develop their characters, then it’s a risky proposition. The producer and the banner also play an important part in decision making. And last but not the least, the pay check. Money too is an important aspect of signing a film.

How much important the director is for you?
He is very important. Off late sometimes I go wrong with my judgement. But I go with my gut feeling about a person. 99% of the times I’ve been right. 1 or 2 cases were unpleasant but that’s fine. Director is the person who has the complete vision in his mind. We actors do our roles but with discussion an actor can bring novelty to the character.

How do you deal with success and failure?
When a particular film doesn’t do well, I do feel bad about it. But I am a very honest guy, I realise what is the problem in the film and you get to know that in this particular way maybe the film is not good or didn’t pan out the way we thought it will. I don’t get into problems nor blame it on anyone by saying he or she is responsible. No worries, it wasn’t the time so the film didn’t do well. Every film is born with it’s fate. I accept it and move on.

On switching roles do you fear whether you’ll get appreciated or not? How do you differentiate the choices of your films?
I don’t fear that. My only fear is, will I like and accept myself in that role? That matters to me. Conviction is very very important for me. I do two different films in one passing day. One positive character and another negative. If I start thinking ‘Mujhe Sab Kuch Aata Hai’ then I won’t be able to work further and that will stunt my progress.

Acting remains the same at the end of the day whether it’s for theatrical release or on OTT. I’ll do to the best to my capacity. I can never say that, if the film is for theatre, then i’ll act this way or if it’s OTT then in a different way. Acting is acting, whatever the medium be. For me each project is important and I do it with utmost sincerity.

After playing Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj what difference did you find in your career graph or people approaching you?
It has changed a lot. I run away from typecasting as I said earlier because I was not getting any opportunity before Tanhaji. Then again, if you don’t get opportunities how will you showcase your talent? Or for that matter what capacity you have in terms of acting? So, after I played Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj in Tanhaji, things have changed positively. Now makers call me for different kind of roles and that’s what any actor wants to be called, a versatile actor.

You have a rich baritone voice. Has your voice become hindrance for your characters?
Yes, it has. Absolutely it was a hindrance in certain cases. Sometimes it’s an advantage sometimes it’s a disadvantage for certain characters. In few characters I try to portray in a very simpler manner but because of maybe my structure or voice it looks very powerful. Then I change it accordingly or if I have to do a certain kind of role, I’m very careful of how to use my voice. Frankly most of the time my voice has been advantageous.

There is a comparison between your voice and Amit Ji’s voice…..
(Laughs) They are not comparing his voice, his voice is much much better. Big B’s voice is way superior. There is no comparison. But yes, people are not comparing, they are liking my voice equally to Mr. Bachchan. I read that or heard somewhere on youtube that after Mr. Bachchan’s voice there is one voice they spoke about is, my voice. Again I can’t understand my voice as I’m hearing it everyday 24/7.

Are you working on your voice?
Lol. I do not do anything. It’s natural and I let it remain natural. I eat everything. Khatta, Mitha sab kuch khata hun. So the answer is No. I do not do anything for my voice. But yes, I am asked and forced to work on my physique. I am the most lazy human on this planet earth. I just want to eat and sleep.

You wanted to be in army? How much engrossed are you into fitness?
I wished to go to the Armed Forces but due to me being super lethargic it didn’t happen. Then my attitude became let’s just sit back and chill in life, why to go there. I was a gym instructor. I have spent so much time in Gyms that now I do not even want to look at a Gym, forget working out there. But nowadays I try and go to the gym. I’m little cautious about my sleep and food intake though. Now, food is better but sleep is little deprived. I have been doing back to back projects and that’s why I am sleep deprived.

What is your preparation point while playing a historical character?
Historical characters are difficult to play. You cannot err there because so much information is available in the public domain. One needs to be sensitive and disciplined while playing any historical character. You can’t take it lightly because there is a lot of responsibility on your shoulders. To be serious about the character which you’re playing and preparing for, you need to look like the character, sound like him, give the best portrayal which you want to see.

Suzhal- The Vortex is gearing up for its OTT release and there is no doubt that this investigative drama is all set to take the world by storm. The series promises to be as gripping and layered as it can be and nothing is stopping it from conquering the hearts and souls of the audience.

Bahubali was strong. It was something nobody has ever seen. Jai Bhim had strong content. The way Amazon Prime Video is promoting Suzhal, taking it and putting it on a fabulous canvas… I believe everybody will want to watch it. I can confidently say that Suzhal- The Vortex will be pushing geographic and linguistic boundaries”.

Adding more to this, Aishwarya Rajesh says “I think we have seen films like Bahubali, RRR, KGF which have mesmerized audiences. Watching these films I was glued to the screens and when you are part of such a big team and such a big set up, I think I can’t ask for more. I am too excited about Suzhal – The Vortex.”

Written and created by Pushkar and Gayatri, Suzhal – The Vortex features Kathir, Aishwarya Rajesh, Sriya Reddy along with Radhakrishnan Parthiban. Releasing on 17th June, the web series will be released in 30+ Indian and foreign languages.

Every filmmaker wants to work with a star like Prabhas, who gives his heart and soul to the film. The filmmakers want to squeeze every bit of his talent that delivers magic on the big screen. Om Raut who will be directing Prabhas in his upcoming ‘Adipurush’ said “Prabhas without a doubt is the biggest star in India”. The director seemed to be impressed by the presence of his persona that is going to create magic. He said, “He has the most expensive eyes and it’s a reflection of his heart”.

The director seemed very impressed by the alluring eyes of the star as he adds “I have managed to get Prabhas to convey the emotions that I have wanted him to, through his eyes”. This has definitely elevated the excitement of the audience to watch the megastar Prabhas in the mega-budget movie, Adipurush.

Prabhas is coming up with an amazing line-up of Pan-India films, like, ‘Adipurush’, ‘Salaar’, ‘Project K’ with Deepika Padukone and Amitabh Bachchan, and one is lined up with Sandeep Reddy Vanga named, ‘Spirit’.

RRR is a period film which takes place around 1920s. It’s story of two legendary revolutionaries, A Rama Raju (Ram Charan) and Komaram Bheem (Jr NTR) who take on the mighty British empire. The story is fictional though inspired by the real characters. One is fiRe and the other is wateR. Two contrasting layers of the opposite personalities cross each other’s paths not knowing their real identities. Bheem wants to rescue a small girl, Malli, from their Gond tribe who has been abducted by the Governor Scott Buxton (Ray Stevenson) and his viscous wife Lady Scott (Alison Doody) who is after poor Indian’s blood, literally. Rama is a serving police officer who is denied promotion despite being a deserving candidate. The apartheid nature of the British is underlined here. Bheem is in a disguise and wants to topple the British government and Rama is after him under orders from his white rulers. After numerous mind blowing fights Rama is successful is arresting Rama and the rulers sentence him a death penalty. How Bheem fights the British brutality and what role Rama plays in it is the crux of the story which is mounted on a larger than life scale.

RRR’s story has nothing much to offer and dwindles as far as logic is concerned. Screenplay looks quite lengthy and needed to be cropped at quite a few places. The run time of (186 min) is too long despite fabulously choreographed action scenes. Rajamouli has taken care of presenting his two lead actors in a grand fashion and both get lengthy interesting introduction scenes. The action is superlative, and if logic  is kept aside, It is enjoyable. SS Rajamouli shows why he is a master craftsman. He provides visual extravaganza and at times surpasses his previous work i.e. Bahubali. Though the film basically is in Telugu, it’s Hindi version too has a mass appeal and there are quite a few ‘Siri Maar’ moments. Rajamouli brings back the magic of masala entertainers with sleekness of technology and muscular grandstanding. His penchant for fantasy and mythology is incorporated in screenplay which will please certain sections of the audience. The music is good especially ‘Nacho Nacho’ song which is fabulously choreographed and will compel everyone to dance. The production value, CGI, VFX raise the bar to make the film a power-packed cinematic blitzkrieg.

Both Ram Charan and Jr NTR have given it all to their respective performances. The south films are known for their melodrama which is carried forward here too. Both have executed action scenes with elan and have tried to infuse convincing quality in their performances. The attack by Bheem along with his captured animals, including tigers, on British Governor’s palatial house is a visual spectacle and there are quite a few similar action scenes which elevates the film’s narrative. Ajay Devgn as Bheem’s father is effortless as usual in a cameo and so is Alia Bhatt as Sita. Olivia Morris as Jennifer is good too as a love interest of Bheem.

Larger than life characters of Ram Charan and Jr NTR will be loved by their telugu fans and despite weaker script SS Rajamouli has infused mass elements to please them.

VikramAditya (Prabhas) is a well known palmist who is also referred to as an ‘India Ka Nostradamus’. His Vedic guru claims that any science including astrological science, is only 99% authentic and Prabhas doesn’t agree with it. His guru imbibes on him that that 1% is for humans to alter their ‘destiny’ with perseverance and dedication. He keeps claiming that he doesn’t have a love-line but keeps fleeting from one girl to another in exotic places like, New York, Sydney, Paris and other European countries, without falling in love. He is always looking for ‘Flitationship’ rather than a relationship. He has a palatial house in Italy where he stays with his mother (Bhagyashree) and brother-like-friend (Kunal Roy Kapur). His mother keeps insisting that he ‘settle’ down but he laughs it away all the time. But destiny has something else in store for him because he falls madly in love with Dr Prerana (Pooja Hegde). He studies Pooja’s hand and predicts a long life and a bright future in her chosen field as against medical predictions. Pooja actually is fighting some inevitable circumstances in her life. After torrid affair Pooja wants to confess her love but Prabhas is reluctant to take things further because of no ‘Love-Line’ on his palm. What transpires next and in-between forms the story of Radhe Shyam.

Radhe Shyam’s story doesn’t have much of a novelty and it’s screenplay is pathetic. Though the film throws a good message that no science is 100% accurate and there’s a scope to change one’s destiny with Karma. But the narration is uninteresting and the length of the film (142 m) makes watching more cumbersome. The director fails to put across the point as the film is unable to make impact despite good thought due to lackadaisical screenplay. The Italian taxi drivers, bus drivers, hospital staff etc speak in English which is unauthentic as Italians seldom speak English. The production design is marvellous and cinematography (Manoj Paramahansa) is a visual treat. The climax, which will be compared to the Titanic climax, is world class and shot beautifully. Music compliments the movie and ‘Aashiqui Aa Gayi’ is hummable.

One can notice Prabhas’ improved Hindi diction and his persona is captivating. Pooja Hegde looks beautiful and her entry scene is eye catching. Despite both looking good together the chemistry between them is deterrent in this love story. The screenplay fails them as their roles are not precisely etched out. Still performances wise they individually have nicely executed their characters. Sachin Khedekar, Bhagyashree, Kunal Roy Kapur and others offer decent performances.

The die hard fans of Prabhas and Pooja Hegde will love ‘Radhe Shyam’ and the grandeur of the film is an added attraction.

Prabhas’ new film ‘Radhe Shyam’ is readying for release and he seems a little tense about it. “Opening of theatres to it’s full capacity is a welcome move but I am anxious about Radhe Shyam doing well at the box office. There’s definitely an excitement as the movie is finally releasing but I am a bit stressed too. Due to pandemic the film’s budget went for a toss and it almost doubled. It took 4 years for the movie to complete and release.” Talking about long gaps between his Hindi movies, Prabhas categorically promised saying, “Now there won’t be a reason to complain. I intend to do 3 films in a year so that the gap fans feel won’t exist.”

In Radhe Shyam Prabhas is playing an astrologer. Talking about astrology Prabhas said, “Personally I don’t believe in astrology. In fact I have not even ‘shown my hand’ to any astrologer. When this film was offered to me I did think of not doing it as I don’t believe in astrology. But the character is so beautifully written which foresees future. He has problems with love but the movie is full of love. If I meet any astrologer now I’ll only ask him about the fate of Radhe Shyam (laughs). I believe in hard work. But when Bahubali was released and became a massive hit countrywide which was never witnessed in the 100 years of Indian cinema, I started believing in fate and destiny. Actually Bahubali is still haunting me and my fans expect similar outcome each time around which stresses me.”

Prabhas is romantically paired with Pooja Hegde. Talking about her, he said, “We had seen her earlier work and were confident that she suited the role very well. But Pooja has surprised us. She has surpassed our expectations and she’ll be huge after this movie.” Other than Hindi language films are termed ‘regional’ but Prabhas has no qualms about it. He said, “Cinema has it’s own language. We should try to compete with Hollywood/Chinese/foreign films than fight amongst ourselves about Indian languages. We should not be a slave to regionalism. I think the boundaries are thinning and now hopefully films will be called Indian films.” “My prime aim is to entertain and once I am accepted in Bollywood movies, I’ll show my acting range. Also I do not want producers to spend huge amounts on my movies. I really want to do a small budget family film. Though my fans will get angry but I’ll convince them saying, ‘I am listening to you 90% of times, now please let me do this’ and surely they’ll understand. I am doing a comedy film shoot of which will commence soon”, said Prabhas.

There was a complaint that Prabhas is a shy person and a man of few words. On this he replied, “I am not an introvert and take time to open up. I admit I used to avoid interactions with strangers. In fact I had requested SS Rajamouli not to take me along for the Bahubali promotions (Laughs heartily). While shooting for Adipurush, Saif Ali Khan and I exchanged only a ‘Hi’ on first day. Day 2 we exchanged pleasantries, 3rd day we spoke a bit more but 4th day onwards we were like a house on fire. He’s a fantastic person and has beautifully played Ravan in the film. But now I talk a lot. Isn’t it?”
