Washington: The Joe Biden administration has so far not named two Indian-Americans who had worked for the Democratic campaign for the US presidential elections, allegedly due to their “RSS-BJP links”, according to a report.

The letter written by the 19 organisations describes such people as ‘foreign agents’ of the RSS and BJP.  These people “often claim to be anti-Trump, citing their minority status and the values of the Democratic party. But in India, they stand for the equivalent of Trumpism: Hindu supremacy,” the letter said.

Key Omissions

Amit Jani: He was the ‘Muslim Outreach’ coordinator of ‘Name Biden’ campaign. His family reportedly has ties with PM Modi and other BJP leaders.

While 20 Indian-Americans have been appointed to the Biden administration, two members of the Democratic party – Sonal Shah, an Obama administration staffer, and Amit Jani, who was part of the Biden campaign team – “have so far been excluded”, the report said.

However, Democratic party sources told the news agency that it was “still really, really early” to claim that Shah and Jani have been kept out of the administration with appointments still being revealed daily.

Their exclusion comes after a coalition of 19 Indian-American organisations had sent a letter to Biden in December 2020, saying “many South Asian-Americans individuals with ties to far-right Hindu organizations in India are affiliated with the Democratic party”. The groups said the Biden administration should have ‘no tolerance’ for such persons.

The letter specifically mentioned Shah and Jani, describing them as individuals “who received funding from or made public statements in support of Hindu supremacist groups”.

Further, the extrapolation that the letter is the reason behind the two persons not being named in the administration yet may not be correct, as per the Democratic source. “I don’t think they are out. I just think they haven’t been given spots yet… if they even want a spot”.

Shah was one of six Indian-Americans who served on the Biden-Sanders “unity task force”. Her father was the president of the US branch of Overseas Friends of BJP and is the founder of RSS-run Ekal Vidyalaya. She was also criticised for raising funds for victims of the 2001 Gujarat earthquake victims on behalf of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad America.

Jani was named as the Biden campaign’s ‘Muslim Outreach’ coordinator, a decision that came under fire when his family’s links to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other BJP leaders emerged.

Last March, following the reports of Jani’s family connections with Modi, Khizr Khan, who is known for his speech at the 2016 Democratic Convention, backed Jani and dismissed all the allegations. “These allegations have been made just to create nuisance and discord,” Khan told a diaspora newspaper, India West. Khan, an American of Pakistani origin, had lost his US army captain in Iraq in 2004.

In July 2019, Shah joined the presidential campaign of South Bend mayor and Biden’s nominee for transportation secretary, Pete Buttigieg.

In a response to The Intercept, a Buttigieg spokesperson had referred to her statement when she was on Barack Obama’s transition team that she “would not have associated with VHP of America” if she could have known the role its Indian counterpart would have in the Gujarat riots. “My personal politics has nothing in common with views espoused by the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP), the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), or any such organisation. I’ve never been involved in Indian politics, and never intend to do so,” she had said in 2008.

Among the Indian-Americans who have made it to the 46th US president’s administration are Vivek Murthy, Neera Tanden, Uzra Zeya and Samira Fazili.

Perhaps encouraged by Biden’s statements on Kashmir and the controversial Citizenship Amendment Act, secular Indian-American organisations have lobbied hard to keep people who “advance the ideology and political interests of violent, extremist Hindu nationalist groups in India” out of his administration.

“Indeed, they practice a peculiar form of identity politics, presenting themselves as spokespeople of the ethnic Hindu minority in the United States, while endorsing the worst forms of Hindu majoritarianism in India. They often use the pretense of fighting American racism, and espouse multiculturalism in the US, but perpetuate a racism of their own in India,” it added.

Anyone who has received funding from or makes public statements in support of the BJP, RSS are “entirely complicit” in the rise of “authoritarianism and ethnonationalist violence in India”, the letter said.

“Political defeats in a democracy are very common but the way Central government is being used to oust Mamata Banerjee is painful,” it said.

“Large-scale rallies and roadshows are going on and the country’s Home Minister is leading it. At the same time, night curfew is required in states like Maharashtra to avoid congestion in the context of coronavirus. The rulers break the rules and the public has to pay,” it further said.

Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray-led party’s editorial further alleged that the Central government hit the ground to save actor Kangana Ranaut and journalist Arnab Goswami.

Shiv Sena alleged that Chinese troops entered India’s boundaries but the country could not push them back, instead nationalism was used to divert attention from the crisis.

“Chinese troops entered India’s border in 2020. They occupied our land. We could not push the Chinese troops back, but a new whip of nationalism was used to divert attention from the crisis. The boycott of Chinese goods and Chinese investment was promoted,” it said.

The editorial hit out at the Centre over the relief package to deal with economic crisis after COVID-19 outbreak.

“The whole world was in trouble but the US gave a good package to its citizens struggling with the economic crisis. This package is such that every US citizen will have 65,000 rupees per month in their bank account. Same happened in Brazil and Europe, but Indian citizens were left empty-handed even after the year ended,” it said.

It further said that the construction of the new Parliament building will not change the situation. “Instead of constructing a new Parliament House building worth Rs 1,000 crores, the money should be spent on the health system, as prominent people of the country told Prime Minister Modi,” read the editorial.

On Predictions By The State BJP That This Government Will Fall
Let them keep predicting; they are busy and happy. I do not want to spoil that. The time in which we are running the government is different (because of the pandemic). The world has faced such a situation after a century. Whoever was running the government before did not face such difficulties.

On Co-operation From The Centre
Even though the party or ideology of people running the government is important, it is the duty of the government either at the Centre or in the state to work impartially. From September, the Centre stopped the supply of things such as PPE kits and N-95 masks. This led to an increase in the state’s financial burden by around Rs 250-300 crore. Also, the GST and tax devolution dues of around Rs 38,000 crore are still pending with the Centre. We also did not receive any cooperation in handling natural calamities such as the Nisarga cyclone, the floods in Vidarbha, and incessant rainfall.

On A Covid Vaccine
We need a plan as there are five companies making vaccines. What temperature does it have to be stored at? How many doses are required? So far there is no clarity on anything.

On GST
When GST came we raised some of the issues through BMC . Mumbai, for instance, has a special status in terms of the scale of tax it generates. Therefore Mumbai should get additional help to further develop the city. If there are any lacunae in GST, it should be fixed to make it a foolproof system. If this is not possible, then the old tax regime should be brought back. If by centralising something, justice is not given to all (states) then what is the point of doing it.

On The States Finances
During the budget session (in 2019), the Covid-19 started spreading in the state, so we had to curtail it (the session). While everything was shut, the Maharashtra government signed memorandums of understanding worth ₹50,000 crore. We have decided to target investment worth ₹1 lakh crore in one year. It is important to note that though the wheels [of economic activities] slowed down, they have not stopped. We will see the fruits of our efforts in the coming days.

On His Government’s Achievements
We started with a decision on developing Raigad district and allocated funds for this. Another big decision was a farm loan waiver up to ₹2 lakh crore. Whatever promises we made, we have nearly fulfilled all of them. The farm loan waiver was a big decision. We don’t make announcements of doubling and tripling farmers income or say acche din aayenge.

On Relief For People From Inflated Electricity Bills
Firstly, using the word inflated bill is incorrect because during lockdown [physical] metre readings were not done. Average bill of three months was sent to consumers. Everybody thought that the average bill that came was high, including me. I want to say here that there was no increase in tariff. Wherever there are complaints, it is being checked and I am told that once the metres are checked people do understand that this is an average bill as per their [past] usage. Even then, if people have complaints, they are being attended to. Do not mislead people with the use of the word ‘inflated’. The pending recoveries are worth ₹60,000 crore. We are not getting much help from the Centre, our dues are not coming from the Centre, and we are facing a financial crisis.
