Revealing more about his growing up years, he adds, “I did my schooling from Utpal Shanghvi School, Did my FYJC & SYJC from Mithibai College of Commerce, and then did my Bachelors in Mass Media from UPG college. I was good in sports, and wanted to be a professional cricketer. I used to go to Shivaji Park everyday during my school to take coaching from Late Sri Ramakant Archerekar sir (he also coached Sachin Tendulkar). I even went to South Africa to play cricket. But after I came back, I went to Jaipur where my dad was shooting for Tumko Na Bhool Payenge. After meeting Salman [Khan] sir and watching him perform I realised that I want to become an actor. I was 13 years old then, so I went and told my mom about my dream,” he says.

Vidyut shares that he didn’t want to be a cinematographer. He was never interested in it. “I wanted to be in front of the camera and one of the biggest reasons being how much I love entertaining people, I want to make them laugh, and cry with my performances,” he adds.

The actor had his share of struggles even though his father, Thomas Xavier was a famous DOP. He started working when he was 16, worked backstage for Ansh Theatre group for a few plays, served tea, mopped floors, polished shoes etc during that time.

“But it was worth it. I learnt so much there during that period. Immediately after that I started working as a background dancer in films and assisted famous choreographer Rekha Prakash for two years. I was an assistant director in Dabangg and Dabangg 2, grateful to Salman Sir for giving me that opportunity. I also acted in Dabangg. I wanted to learn everything behind the camera before I stepped in front of it. After Dabangg I went for several auditions till I bagged teenage Karna in Mahabharat. Thought things would get easier after this but it wasn’t. Even a cameo in 24 season 2 didn’t help. I was also asked to compromise by a few casting directors, which I declined. So it was very difficult but I never quit and did ads, music videos, became an event photographer to earn money. Every rejection in my life has only made me stronger. Finally now when I am doing Dhadkan, I couldn’t believe that I had got this part, I literally wept when I heard the news. I have worked hard every day for 16 years to be here today, and I feel grateful,” he sounds emotional.

A lot of people feel Vidyut resembles actor Anuj Saxena of Kusum fame, many also find a similarity with Yaariyan actor Himansh Kohli.

“To be honest I don’t know how to react to all these. Not only them, I have been told that I also look like Abhishek Bachchan, Vatsal Seth, Arjit Singh etc. Obviously it makes me happy because they are successful people who have done so well for themselves. But I am here to make my mark in the industry, make my name and I hope one day people will tell others that they resemble Vidyut Xavier,” he ends.

When I was first approached for this role, I have to say I was apprehensive but when I understood the nitty gritties of the character, I jumped at the opportunity. Nikhil is just like me; as we share the same beliefs. He is a hardcore feminist and so am I, he is kind and helps people, is a good listener and has his friends’ back. “I feel honoured and grateful that Nilanjana ma’am and Herumb Sir gave me this opportunity. The amount of knowledge I’m gaining, while experiencing the emotions Sia goes through as a doctor is unique and wonderful,” she says.
The actor has been flooded with compliments. “Audience loves Sia 2.0, basically her out-going version. They appreciate the emotional scenes, the ones where I am drunk and when I feel absolutely overwhelmed. Many are able to relate to Sia,” she adds.

Happy with the response around the show and her character, Alma takes this opportunity to also highlight a pressing social issue in times of social media— the fact that girls often are body shamed and age shamed. Recently, Bigg Boss 15 winner Tejasswi Prakash was criticised for addressing Shamita Shetty as “aunty” on the show.

“I’ve been through it so I know how it feels when a person’s body or age shames you. I’ve always been trolled for the way I look. I remember in 2019, when I was 15 and weighed 89kgs, I was bullied at school and by many other people. I remember not going to school because I felt insecured and scared. I was told that I am ugly and fat, that’s when it hit me hard. I lost myself somewhere in between… Looking back, I regret believing in those harsh things I was told. I started to get anxious and often felt alone. I used to avoid meeting people till one day when I decided to deal with it. I lost 25kgs in four months and understood that my weight never defined me. Thanks to them I only got fitter,” she explains.

Highlighting that we are living in a world where everyone wants to have the perfect body, Alma shares that by taking part in this rat race we often end up losing our uniqueness and sanity. “Girls are expected to have an hourglass figure, perfect waist, perfect hip, hair, eyes etc. We have to understand that everybody is perfect in their own way, that it’s okay to have flaws. I think what we are lacking these days and must work on is our kindness,” she shares.
Talking about how she was trolled online, Alma reveals that being an influencer she revealed her age in one of the videos and got over 15,000 hate comments.

“Reading these comments I felt disheartened, not for me but for those people. I felt bad that I’m living in a world where young girls get bullied and called names. It just breaks my heart. I don’t know why it is so hard for people to believe that I’m just 18, I don’t understand why am I even getting trolled for this? Why do I get such horrible DMs? Why do people catcall me? I never understood and I don’t even want to. I also don’t want to get affected by all these and try my best to maintain my peace,” she says.

Agreeing that youth is the hope of our future, Alma feels they need to be nurtured and motivated. “We need to learn so much, do so much and need everyone’s love and support. Healthy criticism is welcome but not trolls. Let’s be loving and kind to each other. I hope all this negativity doesn’t affect our future much and this world becomes a better place for all,” she ends on a note of hope.

Thanks to the show, he has started understanding the lives of doctors a little bit. “Doctors need to keep focus. They have to understand the patient’s history to get the correct diagnosis, the urgency to find the cause of the illness so that they can treat the patient as soon as possible,” he said.

For his role, sometimes he takes inspiration from real people and experiences. “But I mostly try to create a scenario in my head and try to believe that,” he shared.

The show is produced by Nilanjana Purkayasstha and Herumb Khot under Invictus T Mediaworks along with Studio Next. He feels that Herumb and Nilanjana have an eye for detail and all the scenes shot look very real. “Medical procedures, locations and medical terminologies require a certain detailing for the show. They pulled that off very neatly and nicely,” he said.

“We as actors try to understand the meaning of the terminology, what, why, where it is, so that we deliver it with certain emotions,” he added. The show is one hour long, which is a rare thing on TV nowadays. “The time span of our show is longer than other shows. The good thing about our show is that every scene is to the point. There is no extra drama. We are just keeping it real,” he said.

He’s had many interesting incidents on the set. “One which I remember is when Nishant (Dr. Ansari) was doing a scene which required urgency and the dialogue delivery was fast, so in that process, a medical terminology was said in a very funny way that changed its meaning and came out as a cuss word. All the unit members had a good laugh. The whole thing was very funny,” he said.

“We all know Dhadkan on Sony TV is getting very popular. In a very less time, it has made its place in the audience’s heart. Earlier also I received a call for the show, but due to some reason I wasn’t able to accept it,” she recalled.

Again she got a call and she accepted it. “They told me it’s a cameo and a very good character, so I said yes. Sony has always been one of my favourite channels,” she said. “The second thing is it’s Nilanjana ma’am and Herumb sir’s production, and I did not want to lose this opportunity to work with them and the fact I got this offer in the new year, I felt really blessed. I’m pretty sure it will be a good year as the beginning is so good,” she added.

She is playing doctor Namrita Sharma, who is a psycho therapist and head of the psychology department. “The way they talk and consult the patient was something I worked on, how patiently they handle everything, with a smiling face and a positive attitude with the patients. They make sure that the other person should feel that the psychologist is showing genuine concern, so I worked on that,” she shared.

According to her, the set vibes are good. “I have been shooting for the show for quite sometime now. Overall, it’s good. The only thing is that the set is pretty far,” she said with a laughs. But that’s okay for her.

“I would also like to thank Janet for suggesting my name for this character. She has that faith and trust in me, so I’m very thankful to Janet and Nilanjana ma’am ne bhi accept karliya, so let’s hope for the best that I can do justice to my character,” she said.

“It’s a medical-related character and show, toh yeh toh bohot kareebi dil ka maamla hai, especially because of what we’ve seen in the last two years. It’s an important subject which people can connect to, so even I felt very good when I was approached for this show. I also discuss it with my husband who is a doctor,” she added.

She is playing a doctor for the first time. “Let’s see how well I can carry this character. I hope the audience will love me and give me their best wishes and blessings. I am happy that I am playing a character in a good show and not a typical saas-bahu drama,” she said.

I fuel myself with a heavy breakfast and lunch and, more importantly, keep my body hydrated by drinking lots of water. I generally don’t work out daily since I have a very hectic schedule at shoots. It is 3-4 days a week that I try to catch up with my workout session. I strongly believe that the person who feels healthy and is super-charged is always fit”.

“I learnt things about medicine I never knew. And the job is so full of responsibilities. Who knew a doctor also has to be a perfect manager, friend, colleague and a surgeon? He is playing with life. No wonder this profession is called so noble,” said the actor.

He took inspiration from real life too. “I followed videos on Dr Devi Shetty as he is a cardiac surgeon. I watched his videos both when he was in scrubs and when he was with family. I watched every change in his behaviour, and incorporated them in my performances. But acting is way beyond imitation, so I have added all ingredients that I have gathered from my 35 years of experience in performing arts and performed as Dr PC,” he said.

Producers Herumb Khot and Nilanjana Purkayasstha of Invictus T Mediaworks along with Studio Next have an eye for detail and all scenes that have been shot look real.

“The scripts have been written so well and so have been my dialogues. I want to thank the writing, creative team of Dhadkan for giving me such fabulous lines and stories. Nilanjana is such an awesome writer. And Herumb… words are less to describe my gratitude,” he said.

The show’s duration is one hour, which is a rare thing on TV. But it has managed to keep the audience intrigued.

“If you ask me, entertainment should be for 6 hours. That is how it was during Shakespeare days. That is roughly the length of the first season of any web series if you binge-watch. And we got just an hour. It’s tight and packed with solid content and it’s limited,” he said.

He recalls the first shot where Dr Sathe and Dr Murgiwala are on a bike. “We had to reshoot the whole sequence again because on the first attempt, it rained so heavily that we had to halt the shoot halfway in the middle of the night. It rained so heavily that day that we all got stuck while returning. Most of our cars got stuck in waist-level water around Filmcity. Some memories we all cherished,” he said.

The dialogues in the show use medical terminology as well. “We have already shot almost all the episodes. For each and every pronunciation, multiple teams are involved. Of course, actors did their Google bit, but then there is a difference in the way American doctors speak vis-a-vis Indian doctors. So we did our research and obeyed the instructions as given by respected teams for accurate pronunciations. Also, each co-actor helped the other whenever there was a need for correction,” he said.

She also mentions sharing a good bond with both of them. “They’ve been guiding and helping me since the beginning. I am indebted to the kind of patience and faith they have shown in me. I feel so lucky to be a part of this show. They are perfect and know every little nuances and small details. Before the shoot started we used to have these zoom meetings with sir and ma’am when they would encourage us,” she adds. Each episode of DZK, unlike any other show, is one hour long. It’s rare on TV and only goes on to say how much the show has connected with the audience. “I have only heard good things since the telecast started… I’ve friends who are total OTT buffs but they’re all glued to this show. Nilanjana ma’am’s screenplay and storytelling is amazing,” she says.

This being my first ever show and with so much technicality is pretty much a task for me but I am slowly getting used to it. Adhi doctor ban gayi hoon,” she jokes.

Ask about interesting incidents from the set and she replies, “The shoot is like a rollercoaster ride every day. It’s an experience as I am learning about new things and new medical situations. For me, it’s a beautiful memory that I’ll always cherish. I never want it to end. The team is amazing. There are a lot of fun moments and masti happening during the shoot! We’re like family,” she ends.
