Education is not a privilege; it is indeed the need of the hour. The idea behind Sangeeta Babani’s latest sculpture is to promote equal educational opportunities for one and all, without any discrimination on the basis of social status, caste, creed, gender, religion et al. The artist shared, “Knowledge is infinite, it has a beginning but no end and it should not be denied to anyone. An investment in knowledge always gives the best returns. Our idea behind the sculpture is to drive home the force of knowledge and its power. Every child in the country should have an easy and equal access to knowledge which in turn will only help them grow as individuals, and will help country as whole, grow too.”

Dia Mirza, who is known for her work as the UN Environment Goodwill Ambassador & UN Secretary-General’s Advocate for SDGs said, “Public Art is a testimony to the dreams and aspirations of citizens we mistakenly refer to as ‘common.’ Sangeeta’s work, ‘Quest for Knowledge’ beautifully reminds every passerby of the power of the written word, of education, of transformative ideas, and the dream of an inclusive, happier, kinder world that a simple act of opening a book can kindle in us. As a mother and a citizen of a country that has the largest youth population in the world, I cannot overemphasize the importance of education for every single child, adolescent and young adult. Without giving all children equal access to education and reducing social and cultural inequities, we cannot hope to grow as a country or achieve the fourth Sustainable Development Goal which aims to ensure inclusive and equitable quality education for all.”

Sangeeta Babani, who believes Public Art creates a sense of belonging amongst its citizens, and works closely with the BMC, has undertaken to beautify the city she calls home. Not many months ago, she painted a 15-feet high mural, along the underpass in Bandra Reclamation, and garnered much appreciation for the same. The mural has the underlying message of ‘save the environment’. “I have been very passionate about bringing cleanliness and beautification to the city of Mumbai. I feel it needs Art to liven up some of the grimy walls while still creating an impact by touching upon social ideas and cultures to bring awareness to the masses. Art also brings attention to often neglected spaces and encourages people to appreciate the environment,” she expressed.

For the uninitiated, Babani is known for her contemporary and figurative artworks. She has displayed her works the world-over, with exhibitions in India, London, Paris, Dubai et al. While her 18 feet installation titled ‘The Lost Art’ created waves, Babani has also been awarded for her contemporary work in 2017.

On Andrea and her unprecedented performance in the film, ‘Anek’ director Anubhav Sinha says “There couldn’t be a better choice for the lead role in Anek than Andrea. Her northeastern roots have added originality to the story. Apart from that, Andrea has lost a lot of sweat for this character. Her tough looks and phenomenal acting has helped her embody the character well” Andrea, who is playing the role of a Boxer named AIDO in ‘Anek’ is said to have a knack as an actress. She will be seen bringing a unique approach to the craft that will be exhibited in the film.

Talking about her experience of working with Ayushmann and Anubhav Sinha, Andrea says, ” When it finally dawned on me that I would be working with creatives that are such big names in the industry, I think I just scared myself into thinking I wouldn’t be able to deliver as well as they had expected me to. But Ayushmann and Anubhav Sir created such a comfortable environment for me on set that I felt no added pressure to over-perform or do anything that was beyond my capabilities- being a newcomer in this field.”

For the first time, Ayushmann Khurrana will be seen essaying the role of an undercover officer while the leading lady Andrea will be seen slipping into the role of a National-level boxing fighter named AIDO in ‘Anek’.

Andrea, who is proud of her Naga roots believes that her uniqueness has set her apart from other models. Her extraordinary yet sharp lineaments have helped her garner attention from major global brands and are one of the reasons why she enjoyed a successful modeling career.

The studio behind powerful narratives and strong women characters from Kahaani, Queen, Mary Kom to Padmaavat has now joined hands with Outsiders Films house to bring to you a fascinating story of four women and their life changing journey to the highest motorable pass in the world.

Seher’s far-reaching impact as a kind, generous, and formidably talented human being is also being remembered and mourned by the faculty and close-knit alumni community of The Social Communications Media Department (SCMSophia) of Sophia Smt. Manorama Devi Somani College as a part of Sophia Polytechnic. Seher’s formative years as a student here shaped her professional journey and now the college has memorialised her at the campus with a completely refurbished studio floor named after her. A dedicated 2,000 sq ft space in the head of Mumbai – the floor will have a state-of-the-art large broadcast news studio with a fully-equipped production control room with audio visual projection facilities and a smartboard, two editing suites, an audio recording and mixing suite, and a breakout room for students.

The renovation entailed a complete stripping-down of the entire floor and upgrades like soundproof walls, state-of-the-art audio-visual equipment, a smartboard to replace the whiteboard, computer, LED screen, and much more. Also included will be new editing tables, smart storage solutions, ergonomic furniture, and eco-friendly lighting solutions apart from a completely new wooden flooring. The renovation took over a month and is ready in time to welcome the 2021-2022 batch at the institution.

Close associate and friend, actor, and producer Dia Mirza says, “Seher was always a firm believer in a strong foundation – a foundation built on a good education, and versatile experiences in life and at work. She always admired SCM and her college Sophia’s as the key influences that helped her create foundational skills and craft the core values and strong work ethic that we came to love and admire her for. This contribution to SCMSophia and future students, I believe, is Seher’s way of saying ‘thank you.”

“While I did not personally teach Seher at SCM, I have followed her successes with great pride. We are dismayed that a bright star from our constellation has been prematurely dimmed. Actor, producer and champion for nature Dia Mirza turns 40 on December 9, 2021. This year, she is dedicating her special day to the frontline forest warriors who lost their lives during the ongoing pandemic and has pledged 40 lakhs to their families.

In a deeply moving appeal, posted on fundraising platform ‘Milaap’ and on her social media handles, the star said, “On my birthday this year, I would like to take the opportunity to request all those who may want to send me flowers or gifts to instead make a donation to WTI to help our VanRakshaks. There could be no better birthday gift! Your gift will help support the bereaved families of India’s ‘Guardians of the Wild’ who lost their lives to Covid 19 while protecting our natural heritage.”

She added, “Beginning with my 40th birthday on 9 December, for the next 40 days, I will donate a lakh each day and hope that you all will (contribute alongside me to the best of your abilities / match or better that amount) as we seek to maximise our collective impact!”

Dia further said, “Our guardians of the wild, our van rakshaks risk their lives in service to nature. They often fall to accidents in the toughest of terrain, inclement weather, attacks by wild animals or poachers. When the second wave of COVID-19 tore through the country leading to nationwide lockdowns, these men and women were out patrolling our country’s forests on foot. Between March and June 2021, when most of us stayed at home, India lost more than 500 of these conservation heroes to Covid-19! Most of them were young, between 30 and 50 years of age, and had committed their lifetime to preserving India’s wildlife. The sudden demise of so many young, committed people is not only heart-wrenching, but a blow to nature conservation. The least we can do now is to recognize their service and stand in support of the young families they leave behind, who have suffered the biggest blow.”

Wildlife Trust of India’s (WTI) Conservation Heroes Covid Casualty Fund provides an ex-gratia of INR 100,000/- and a scroll of honour to the next of kin of the fallen heroes. Under the scheme, WTI received ex-gratia claims for over 200 pandemic casualties from the wildlife sector across India. Of these, 135 requests have already been processed by WTI, and the next of kin of the fallen heroes have received a scroll of honour and a cheque of INR 1,00,000/- in official handover ceremonies. But there still are 65 pending requests!

Dia, also the ambassador of WTI, concluded, ” I appeal to you to join me and donate for the cause. Our target is to raise the remaining amount to cover all 65 families and your contribution can bring us closer to our goal.”
