Kabir (Ajay Devgn) and his wife (Jyothika, making a comeback to Hindi movies after 26 years) have two children, Janhvi (Janaki Bodiwala) and Dhruv (Angad Raaj), who go to a farmhouse for a family vacation. On the way the family happens to meet Vanraaj (R Madhavan), at a Dhaba, who initially looks like an amiable gentleman. Surprisingly he lands at their farmhouse too giving flimsy reason. Unsuspecting family allows him to enter the house for charging the cellphone. But in actuality he is an occultist who had done black magic on their daughter Janhvi. She becomes his puppet and Kabir and family are helpless. They even offer him all their belongings including the farmhouse but he doesn’t let go Janhvi from his black magic web. Kabir, though helpless, tries hard to free his daughter from Vanraaj’s supernatural clutches of ‘Vashikaran’. What form around it forms the crux of the story.

The story still is relatable in 2024 as some elements are still beyond scientific explanations. The screenplay is woven tightly and there are quite a few moments where viewers will be on the edge of the seat. But there aren’t any back stories to justify the happenings on screen. Vikas Bahl has handled the situations swiftly and keeps viewers engaged in the proceedings. Music and background score are relatable and the production values are high. Cinematography is excellent and the shot divisions and angles add to the drama on screen. Ajay Devgn infuses emotional depth in his portrayal of a doting and later a vulnerable father. His action scenes are good but had a scope to make them more realistic. A knife inserted in the palm for many hours and he still fights is ‘filmy’. Jyothika delivers a decent performance. Janaki Bodiwala is good too as she had reprised the same role in the original movie. R Madhavan is simply outstanding. He makes you hate him and that’s a big compliment to his acting. He has made supernatural things look natural with his multifarious performance. Others lend good support.

Shaitaan is a battle against ‘Vashikaran’ and black magic and definitely a one time watch.

Drishyam 2 begins where the first part had ended. The opening scene itself sets the tone of the film and with a glimpse of Vijay Salgaonkar (Ajay Devgn) starts the narration. Sameer Deshmukh, who is a son of a former IG Meera Deshmukh (Tabu) and Mahesh Deshmukh (Rajat Kapoor), is missing (in the first half) and this time around police restarts the investigations and their main suspect is Vijay Salgaonkar.

After a lapse of seven years Vijay is an owner of a cinema theatre and wants to produce a film on the said case. He actually has written a book with the help of a writer Murad Ali (Saurabh Shukla) wherein the accidental death of Sameer and the subsequent incidents are mentioned in detail. His wife Nandini (Shriya Saran), daughter Anju (Ishita Dutta) has turned epileptic due to facing the traumatic situations and younger daughter Anu (Mrunal Jadhav) is a teenager now. Each member of the Salgaonkar family is under stress but lead a casual life. But in comes a new IG of police, Goa, Mr Tarun Ahlawat (Akshay Khanna) and there are indications that he’ll solve the case and arrest Mr Salgaonkar. Sameer’s accidental death/murder forms the crux of the sequel too.

Drishyam 2 scores in scripting as when a situation is facing dead end, the writers bounce back with interesting twist with multiple threads. ‘Picture ke end mein hero jail nahi jana chahiye’ is a dialogue in the film and the screenplay of the movie does justice to it. Though the first half may seem slow, the second half is more gripping and gathers the steam at the right time. Debutant director Abhishek Pathak has done a good job and he keeps audience on the edge of the seat. The first part had an original plot and the second part is equally good. The story is unpredictable which adds to the entertainment quotient. Music is good and background score by Rockstar DSP (Devi Sri Prasad of Pushpa fame) adds to the drama on screen. Cinematography is excellent and the production values are high.

Ajay Devgn is excellent, as usual, and dishes out a responsible and captivating performance with multiple emotions. His portrayal of a common man with a razor sharp mind elevates the film. Akshay Khanna as an IG delivers a stylish yet believable performance. Tabu shows her prowess as an actor in a limited screen time. Shriya Saran looks beautiful and emotes well. Ishita Dutta, Mrunal jadhav, Rajat Kapoor, Saurabh Shukla, Neha Joshi lend good support. Kamlesh Sawant scores brownie points with his rowdy performance.

Drishyam 2 is a very good suspense thriller and with ample twists and turns makes an interesting watch.
