FWICE issues Non-Cooperation directive against Gauhar Khan

Gauhar Khan was tested positive for Covid 19 and was advised home quarantine. But the over smartness drove to to shoot one of her projects. Despite being corona positive she took part in shoot thus jeopardising the lives of many on the sets. After coming to the notice of Municipal Corporation, a case was registered at Oshiwara police station under various sections including Infectious Diseases Act.

FWICE came into action when it came to their notice of grave misconduct on the part of Gauhar Khan, they immediately issued an non-cooperation directive against the said actor. But Gauhar Khan’s team refuted all the charges and said that Gauhar is a law abiding situation and had done nothing illegal. She has a corona negative report now but the municipal law states that even one of the reports is positive, the person should be quarantine, home or institutional. FWICE ISSUES A NON-COOPERATION DIRECTIVE AGAINST GAUAHAR KHAN

The FWICE highly condemns the act of Ms. Gauahar Khan for resuming shooting after being tested positive for Covid-19 Infection even though she was advised to be quarantined. Her act is highly irresponsible and is against the strict guidelines laid down the Government of India & Maharashtra issued for the Media and Entertainment Industry post resumption of shootings in Maharashtra. It is indeed a serious offence and that she has not only breached the rules issued by the Government but also endangered the lives of the entire crew members working with her on the respective shoot. Such ignorance will not be tolerated by the FWICE and that it thanks the BMC the Mumbai Police for the FIR lodged against Ms. Gauahar Khan, actress Mumbai for her inhuman, disrespectful act towards the other crew members as well as the Government.

The FWICE has jointly decided to issue a Non Cooperation Directive against Ms. Gauahar Khan for two months and it is hereby advised to all the members of our affiliated craft to distance themselves from being associated with Ms. Gauahar Khan for the next two months until a fresh directive is issued by the FWICE regarding the permission to her for resuming work in the Media and Entertainment Industry.

It is hereby advised to all the members to keep themselves vigilant for such incidents and immediately report to their Production house, association and the FWICE, if any of their crew member is tested positive for the Covid-19 infection and ensure that such persons are not allowed to resume the shootings until they complete the quarantine period and submit the negative report for the said infection.

Any members if found cooperating with Ms. Gauahar Khan shall also be liable for stringent disciplinary action by the FWICE.

Now, Rohit Shetty extends a helping hand to freelance media videographers

Rohit Shetty is known for his philanthropic ways. This ‘hit-machine’ director always comes forward to help people in distress. In the wake of breaking of Covid 19 pandemic, Rohit Shetty has been helping people including police personnel. He donated, during lockdown, Rs 51 lakhs to FWICE (Federation of Western India Cine Employees) to support daily wage workers from the film industry.

Rohit Shetty, who is known for his ‘Cop-Universe’ movies helped Mumbai police and the Commissioner of Police publicly thanked him, ‘We thank Mr #RohitShetty, who has been a source of continued support for the men and women in Khaki ever since the onset of the #COVID19 pandemic. Mr. Shetty has facilitated 11 hotels with unlimited occupancy for our on-duty personnel #TakingOnCorona on the streets of Mumbai’.

Time and again, Rohit Shetty has come forth to support people who have been financially affected due to Covid. He has been doing his bit by helping cine workers and freelance media personals who are homebound due to the lockdown. He has further extended help to the freelance media videographers who have been unable to work by directly transferring money to their accounts.

To combat mental issues, CINTAA starts a helpline

In the wake of multiple suicides in the entertainment industry, the various organisations who are working for the welfare of the industry people are shaken. Mental issue is the taking point in the nook and corner of showbiz. Now CINTAA (Cine & TV Artistes’ -Association) has taken initiative to combat these issues.

“The layers of pressure for an actor are as much or more than the layers of makeup,” says actor Amit Behl. “The social media adds to the stress of being under constant watch. The industry is not about constant fame or constant income and the lockdown has obviously added to the anxiety and stress, leading to depression over an uncertain future. But Cine & TV Artistes’ Association (CINTAA) is not cash-rich,” avers actor Amit Behl, Sr Joint Secretary and Spokesperson, CINTAA. “We reach out to our members in as many ways possible and hold hands, not just during pandemic but always.” CINTAA has now tied up with Zindagi Helpline that offers counselling support with a care group which consists of experts and empaths alike. CINTAA also empanelled with psychiatrists, psychotherapists, psychoanalysts and psychologists on our care committee. “We are very concerned about this issue and want to take it up further,” reveals Behl.

CINTAA first took cognisance of this fact when CINTAA member, Pratyusha Banerjee committed suicide in 2015. Since then, the CINTAA care committee and outreach committee have organised seminars and counselling sessions dealing with mental health, physical health, yoga as well as counselling for anxiety, depression, suicide prevention measures.

“We were also at the forefront of the sexual harassment and the MeToo movement. We’ve also done webinars on this, including one with the internationally renowned psychiatrist Dr Anjali Chhabria. We’ve also shared a lot of suicide helplines and numbers on our social media,” avers Behl who adds that CINTAA is approaching major studios, stakeholders, broadcasters and corporates who could donate some money through their CSR to set up a 24/7 helpline for artists and technicians.

“Mental health is stigmatised in our country and the words, depression or anxiety are looked upon as though they don’t exist in our dictionary. In Bollywood, actors are like fireflies, They look immortal, but their life of glory is short-lived. They are not able to reach out for help. But of late, actors like Deepika Padukone have sought to lead by example, making it easier for others. Hence, Zindagi Helpine will make a vital difference,” says social activist Anusha Srinivasan Iyer, the founder of Zindagi Helpline. “The group has experts and empaths alike and anyone in trauma always has someone who will lend them an ear as well as help them get help on time. It is simply about being there for one another.”

Says Dr Shrradha Sidhwani, psychologist & psychotherapist, Associate Fellow & Supervisor of REBT (USA), and one of the Core Founding Members of Zindagi Helpline, “The film and television industry has huge highs and lows. Even before the pandemic. Now, there is an urgent need of psychological intervention. When your movie is released, one is busy with name, fame, work, surrounded by people and travelling constantly for promotions. There is a lot of anxiety before the release as well as after, and a lot of pressure in handling critical comments. Individuals tend to personalise these comments and often may feel rejected and have a sense of not being good enough or have failed if the project doesn’t do well.”

Sidhwani believes that most of us define ourselves based on the work we do and actors bear the negative judgments of their audience, and that this may lead them to feel helpless and worthless.

“A lot of social validation and competition surrounds the acting world. In the race to become successful one may lose himself just to wear the mask of a character. A thin line lies between who you are and what character you play.

Since work is not guaranteed, people have to live with uncertainty and may be deeply insecure about their life. No doubt it is high maintenance to be an actor and one needs to constantly generate money to keep up their PR or social presence. At times this constant pressure weighs a person down and they may be too harsh on themselves.”

Student-writer Vedant Gill, who is battling depression himself, speaks of how assumptions about suicide and mental illness are sometimes weird. “People tend to think we are shirking work or that we are being unreasonable. At times, they bring religion or God in between. But not every person who is depressed wants to commit suicide, and even if they do it is to end their pain, not to die. If they have someone holding their hand and have counselling and medication at the right time, without skipping, it surely will help. One needs to earn not just for money but also to have a sense of purpose. Therapy takes time and patience is critical. There needs to be parental, familial and community support. We need someone who lends an ear without being judgemental. And that is not asking for much.”

Sidhwani offers simple solutions. “Loss and loneliness are also defining factors in this journey and at times the spotlight is on you and at times you are left completely with yourself while there is no work. One needs to evaluate and constantly remind themselves that being alone does not mean you are lonely and develop other interest, hobbies, skills. Keep good connectivity with family members and old friends and remember there is another reality other than show business,” she says.

Behl has the last word. “CINTAA will take the initiative, but we’d like the industry to come together, tackle this and make it a very healthy ecosystem. We want to follow the same lines that our colleagues in the US and UK, primarily, that is, Equity UK and SAG-AFTRA US are doing, they have these helplines and they’ve been very beneficial to members. Hopefully, we will also tie-up with the Screenwriters’ Association and FWICE in creating this kind of a helpline. We are initiating a series of dialogues with the Producers’ Council, the broadcasters in the Indian Broadcasters’ Forum so that we do not face such casualties in the future,” concludes Behl.

No age bar for shoots now

Ever since the entertainment industry got permission to resume shoots, there was a snag. Artists and technicians above 65 years of age were barred from being on sets. A lot projects, including of television serials, have elderly characters playing pivotal roles and importantly they were popular with the viewers too. The concerned unions and caretaking bodies of entertainment industry have knocked on the court’s door for lifting of that embargo. After a tussle and battle with the authorities, Hon Court granted permission to allow 65+years personnel on the sets. This comes as a relief for many.

Entertainment industry bodies, IMPPA and CINTAA issued an official statement to that effect. IMPAA circular stated, ‘1. This is to inform that though under the unlock conditions the State of Maharashtra had allowed the shooting of films and serials but had imposed condition that the persons above the age of 65 and above will not be entitled to participate in the shooting process either as Artist or as crew members.

2.IMPPA alongwith one Mr. Pramod Pandey had challenged the validity of the said directions before the Hon’ble High Court Mumbai and accordingly, by an order passed today the said Petition has been allowed by the Hon’ble High Court by holding that no such restriction could be imposed on the basis of age of the persons and clarified that only precautionary guidelines which are applicable to all other business shall be applicable and no specific condition can be imposed in respect of a particular section. Copy of the order is awaited and in the meanwhile the present press release is being issued. Advocate Ashok M. Saraogi appeared for IMPPA in the matter.

CINTAA issued a statement and it’s Senior Joint Secretary and Chairperson – Outreach Committee, CINTAA, Amit Behl informed, “This is a great piece of news that the honourable High Court of Mumbai has quashed the orders of actors and technicians of 65 and above that barred them from shooting. I think this is the result of the joint efforts made by CINTAA, IFTPC, IMPPA, FWICE and our *erstwhile* senior members like Our President Shri Vikram Gokhale,Manoj Joshi (Senior VP, CINTAA), who visited the Governor of Maharashtra, Hema Malini ji who approached the Home Ministry and Shabana Azmi ji who has been in touch with the Honorable Minister Amit Deshmukh. Finally it has happened! Members who have lost their jobs or have been replaced in the interim period when this order had not come is an unfortunate collateral damage. It’s a great victory! There’s a sense of solace and a sense of relaxation that we at CINTAA feel. Our senior members, who were in any way troubled with the lockdown and the pandemic can now heave a sigh of relief and work peacefully. Kudos! Congratulations and also big congratulations to Pramod Pandey who made the effort to actually file a PIL. And a big thank you to the Union Ministry, the Government of Maharashtra and all the people who were involved in getting this effort done. I am hoping everybody stays safe and we are back to a healthy shooting ecosystem soon!”

IFTPC, CINTAA and FWICE collectively pave way for resumption of shootings

IFTPC, CINTAA and FWICE have amicably resolved the outstanding issues which paved the way for the immediate resumption of shootings. These understandings were reached in virtual meeting held between IFTPC, FWICE and CINTAA. IFTPC agreed to provide two sets of insurance coverage i.e Death Cover of 25 lacs due to Covid-19 and also hospitalization cover of Rs. 2 lacs uniformly across all hierarchy of the cast & the crew. Apart from the insurance, IFTPC also assured that every precautions as per the government’s guidelines will be put in place to ensure utmost safety for the entire cast & crew.

Also a decision was taken to reduce the period of credit for cast and crew from existing 90 days to 30 days for at least the first three months; mutually negotiated pay cuts without actors facing any sanctions, and continued dialogue with all parties for easing working conditions were also agreed to, without delaying the resumption of shootings.

IFTPC acknowledged the contributions of CINTAA and FWICE who in these extra ordinary situations showed exemplary understanding and maturity in the workers and the national interest. In total solidarity and bonhomie, the stakeholders IFTPC, CINTAA, FWICE and the Broadcasters announced that the shooting will begin immediately and a new saga will unfold in every household soon.

FWICE sends notice to the hospital for leaking video of Rishi Kapoor from ICU

A notice has been issued to Mumbai’s Sir HNRilliance Foundation Hospital in connection with the leak of Rishi Kapoor’s videos. This notice has been sent by the film body. Federation of Western India Cine Employees (FWICE). Federation President BN Tiwari, General Secretary Ashok Dubey and Treasurer Gangeshwar Lal Srivastava and Advisor Ashok Pandit have informed about this. FWICE has lodged a protest on the video of Rishi Kapoorji, which went viral from HN Hospital’s ICU. The video is unethical, it is made without permission. This violates the fundamental rights of a veteran living a noble and dignified life. ”

The hospital administration has given clarification in this matter. Reply to the notice reads, “We have come to know that the video of one of our patients is going viral on the digital platform. Patient privacy and privacy is paramount for Sir HH Reliance Foundation Hospital and we are committed to this and condemn it. Hospital management is investigating the case. Strict action will be taken against those found guilty.”

The video went viral only on 30 April. On 30 April, 67-year-old Rishi Kapoor, who was battling cancer, breathed his last in the hospital’s ICU. The same day, a video of him went viral on social media, showing how the actor’s breath was breaking at the last moment. Some other videos also are making rounds on social media, including, Rishi’s son Ranbir was seen performing last rites on the bed of the hospital.

Due to Corona virus threat, no shoots from 19th march

Covid 19 is declared as pandemic as it has affected all industries, including entertainment industry, adversely throughout the world. Back home in india too a lot of states have started taking precautionary measures to fight this deadly virus. Maharashtra state also has declared some preventive measures for the safety of it’s people and Mumbai, which is the capital of Maharashtra and where most of the shoots from the entertainment industry happen, is seriou;y following them. Major bodies who represent entertainment industry met to decide the fate of it’s members and decided that post Wednesday 18 March all shoots of TV serials, films and digital formats will be shut owing to corona virus pandemonium.

So no shoots from Thursday 19th March 2020. This joint decision was taken this Sunday by 5 bodies of entertainment world and their heads. Bodies like IMPPA, WIPPA, IFTDA and FWICE were present and this would be implemented by Wednesday and is applicable till 31 st March. In complying with the the initiatives by govt of India, and in overall security of the nation this decision was taken in the interest of all.

The decision was taken with following people from the industry, Ashok Pandit – filmmaker and President directors association, J D Majhitia, TV producer and IFTPC Vice President representing all producers TP Agarwal – President IMPPA( Indian motion pictures producers association), Ashok Dubey – general secretary FWICE (federation western India cine employees).
