The story centres on Nawabuddin (#VijayVarma), who is determined to revive his late father’s printing press. During this mission, he stumbles upon a collection of unpublished poems by the reclusive writer Aziz Beg (#NaseeruddinShah), who lives a quiet life with his daughter Minni (#FatimaSanaShaikh). Under the pretext of learning poetry, Nawabuddin attempts to persuade Aziz to publish his work, with Minni extending subtle support. Yet, Aziz remains steadfast in his refusal. A sudden trip to Delhi strains Nawabuddin’s growing bond with Minni, and when his brother decides to sell the press, he returns to Aziz one last time — determined to preserve the legacy his father left behind.

Though essentially a love story, the director gives Gustaakh Ishq a refreshingly different treatment. He avoids the breezy romance typical of today’s films and instead handles the themes of love, poetry, and human connection with delicate care, never going overboard. The dialogues are among the film’s strongest elements — some lines are truly remarkable, offering deep philosophy wrapped in simple sentences. The music complements the mood well, and the cinematography is exceptional, with the DOP using light to striking effect.

Naseeruddin Shah is outstanding, navigating the character’s layers with effortless mastery. His command over Urdu elevates his performance even further. Vijay Varma delivers a sincere and dependable portrayal, while Fatima Sana Shaikh once again proves that simplicity can be beautiful. She brings maturity to her role and seems to grow as an actor with every film.

Gustaakh Ishq is like gliding through Dal Lake on a shikara, unhurried, immersive, and quietly beautiful.

He shared, “Isse pehle meri mulaqaat nahi hui thi Manish Malhotra se. Jab hum film ke liye mile, mujhe Manish ka passion dekhne mila – aur wo har cheez ke liye tha. Jab mai aur Vibhu Puri kisi cheez se relate karte the, tab Manish would bring us back to the film’s demand and the character’s demand. He’s very passionate and it’s beautiful to work with him.”

#GustaakhIshqs soothing album has emerged as the film’s heartbeat as it weaves poetry with emotions, and Vishal Bhardwaj credits Vibhu Puri for the same. “The credit for creating an album _Kucch Pehle Jaisa_ goes to Vibhu Puri. It’s very heartwarming to feel – shayari and references from him – and it’s something that’s very rare to find. Film ki poetries me uska lehja jhalak raha hai. And it’s because of Vibhu Puri,” he adds.

Gustaakh Ishq’s album has emerged as a massive hit among audiences as it serves musical memories _Kucch Pehle Jaisa_. Its tracks, such as Ul Jalool Ishq, Aap Is Dhoop and their latest release, Shehar Tere, are crafted by musical magicians – including Vishal Bhardwaj’s soothing music, Gulzar’s lyrics and vocals by a range of artists like National Award-winning singer Arijit Singh, Shilpa Rao, Papon, Javed Ali, Jazim Sharma and Himani Kapoor.

Set in the fading kothis of Punjab and the lived-in lanes of Purani Dilli, Gustaakh Ishq tells a love story steeped in the warmth of old-school romance. Directed by #VibhuPuri, the film also stars #VijayVarma, #NaseeruddinShah, and Sharib Hashmi, with music by Vishal Bhardwaj and lyrics by Gulzar.

Minni isn’t written as a grand heroine but she’s a woman you know, she – like many of us – carries dreams that don’t always fit her world. Fatima says that’s what drew her in. “Minni reminded me of so many girls I’ve known, who are strong, grounded, quietly hopeful. She’s someone who believes in love, but on her own terms. There’s dignity in her stillness,” she said.

The film’s mood harks back to a gentler time, of chai, shayari and unspoken longing. Vibhu Puri calls Minni the “heartbeat of Gustaakh Ishq.”

Vibhu said, “Fatima is the beating heart of the film. There’s something disarmingly human about the way she makes silence feel like dialogue.”

With producer #ManishMalhotra and his brother Dinesh Malhotra, holding the reins of what is Malhotra’s first outing, Gustaakh Ishq bridges his love for cinema, design, and emotion. With Naseeruddin Shah as a soulful shayar and Vijay Varma as a man learning the language of poetry, Minni’s story unfolds in the spaces between their words and worlds.

Gustaakh Ishq feels like a reminder that old-school love still has a place on the big screen and that itself is the most audacious thing about it.

The film releases in theatres on November 28.

“I feel very blessed that I’ve had the opportunity to work with such amazing actors and directors this year – whether it’s in #AapJaisaKoi, Metro In Dino, or Gustaakh Ishq. I’m very fortunate to be getting stories like these, where I finally get the chance to explore romance,” she said and remarked in jest, “Since it doesn’t happen much in real life, at least I get to experience it in films!”

“And yes, I did make sure to pay attention to the details, that maybe I’ll get a good romantic moment someday! It’s a completely different experience because these are such character-driven roles. And that’s the best part. As an actor, if your roles don’t allow you to completely dive in and only let you stay on the surface, it’s not exciting,” she added.

As Gustaakh Ishq beautifully blends poetry with love, Fatima shared, “Even in our film, there’s a certain poetry to it. For me, playing this kind of a role feels incredible because such kind of films are rarely made these days, films that carry certain pace, feels like rhythm – it flows beautifully. I’m very grateful to Vibu Puri, Manish Malhotra for envisioning me in a role like this.”

In Aap Jaisa Koi, she doesn’t play the sweet, agreeable heroine. Instead, she leans into rebellion, carrying a energy that makes her love story fragile but also fierce. The film lets her break out of the mould of what a woman in love is “supposed” to look like on screen.

Metro… In Dino pulls her into another world entirely – the claustrophobic present-day city, where love is messy, jagged at the edges, and weighed down by circumstance. Here she doesn’t float in the glow of romance but makes you believe in the ache that accompanies.

And now, there’s her next film – Gustaakh Ishq, steeped in Purani Dilli’s crumbling kothis and old-world silences. Fatima carries the story with her stillness, making her glances into conversations. The film’s poetry and music orbit around her.

Taken together, these three films sketch out what makes her different. Fatima isn’t content with being the ornamental presence opposite a star. Her roles turn the spotlight inward – on what a woman feels, hides, or longs for in love.

It’s been a while since Hindi cinema allowed romance to breathe like this. With these back-to-back films, Fatima Sana Shaikh is quietly restoring that mood, bringing back love stories that make you remember what it’s like to fall, stumble, and want again.

Across these three films, Fatima Sana Shaikh is assuredly bringing romance back, on her own terms.
