Actor David Dawson, who plays Patrick, Tom’s (Styles) love interest in the film, recently opened up on his preparations for the role. He revealed that his close gay friend helped him get into the skin of his character and channel the mindset of young Patrick. “I have a man who’s very special to me who I worked with years ago, and became close friends with. He used to tell me a lot of beautiful stories of him growing up as a gay man during this period.”

To deeply understand the narrative, The English actor also watched BBC’s factual drama ‘Against the Law’ and researched the ‘history of gay bars as safe spaces.’ The actor also drew parallels between homosexuality in the past and present and revealed how happy he is to see situations change for the better for the LGBTQIA+ community now. “It gave me a real, greater appreciation of just what those spaces mean and symbolize, and made me feel incredibly privileged to live now, as a gay man, and have the freedoms and the rights that I have — and to not take that for granted.”

Emma Corrin, who plays Tom’s wife Marion, recently opened up about the importance of intimate scenes in the film and how they helped to move the narrative forward. “When Tom and Marion are first intimate together, it’s almost heartbreaking in the sense that, although they’re physically close to each other, they’re so far apart. I think it’s one of the first times she realises there’s something quite significant missing from their relationship. You feel that and feel for her, and that’s very powerful.”

Adding how the bond between the three friends is crucial in the film, Corrin said, “The friendship that the three of them have is so central and we knew that the audience would really need to believe in that. We were lucky to have a three-week rehearsal process before we started shooting where we got to know each other.”

Corrin identifies as a non-binary and found it challenging to play the character, “I was willing to explore it and I learned a lot. I certainly learned what it was like for people to exist at that time.” With hopes that the film will further conversations about the LGBTQIA+ community in society, Corrin concluded, “Marion’s journey and what she does, is so central to furthering the narrative of queer acceptance today. It’s why the film is so heartbreaking.”

The trailer of ‘My Policeman’ was unveiled on Wednesday and it co-stars ‘#TheCrown’ actress Emma Corrin and David Dawson along with Styles.

The tale, which is an adaption of Bethan Roberts` 2012 novel, centers on the closeted police officer played by Styles, Tom Burgess. Since it is against the law to be gay in 1957 Brighton, Burgess starts dating Marion (Corrin), a teacher. However, he is also secretly in love with Patrick Hazelwood, a museum curator (Dawson).

Grammy winner Harry Styles is prepping up for one of his most anticipated releases, My Policeman. A romantic period drama set in 1957 Britain. The film shows the love triangle of a gay policeman Tom (Harry Styles), a teacher Marion (Emma Corrin), and a museum curator Patrick (David Dawson). Tom marries Marion while he is still in love with Patrick, leading them on an emotional journey. While the hide-and-seek game results in longing and regret, years later in 1990, the trio has one last chance to repair their past mistakes as they reunite under dire circumstances. Directed by Michael Grandage, My Policeman is based on Bethan Roberts’ 2012 novel of the same name.

Harry Styles says that he is proud to be a part of the upcoming film, My Policeman. The story completely moved him and he decided to approach director Michael Grandage himself. In his meeting with Grandage, Styles showed up with all lines memorized and Grandage got his Tom immediately. Revealing what attracted him to the story, Styles said, “It’s not like ‘This is a gay story about these guys being gay.’ It’s about love and about wasted time to me. It’s obviously pretty unfathomable now to think, ‘Oh, you couldn’t be gay. That was illegal (in the 50’s).’ I think everyone, including myself, has their own journey with figuring out sexuality and getting more comfortable with it.”

While the film has intimate scenes, Styles feels it focuses more on emotional lovemaking between the gay couple, rather than the physical sexuality. Sharing how director Micheal Grandage wanted to portray gay intimacy, the actor shared, “So much of gay sex in the film is two guys going at it, and it kind of removes the tenderness from it. There will be, I would imagine, some people who watch it who were very much alive during this time when it was illegal to be gay, and Michael wanted to show that it’s tender and loving and sensitive.”

Featuring an ensemble cast of Harry Styles, Emma Corrin, Gina Mckee, Linus Roache, David Dawson, and Rupert Everett, My Policeman, will release in select theaters on October 21 followed by a global release on Prime Video on November 4.
