Vidyut Jammwal: 3000 years old Indian ‘#Kalaripayattu’ has inspired many Hollywood action stars!

Touted as one of the greatest action stars in the world, #VidyutJammwal has been receiving tremendously positive responses from the viewers, critics and industry alike for his latest hostage drama ‘#SanakHopeUnderSiege’ streaming on #Disney+HotstarMultiplex.

Considered as India’s biggest action film in the OTT space, ‘Sanak’ features some cool and never-seen-before action sequences performed by the actor. While the trailer features amazing action on par with international standards, Vidyut was asked if he was inspired by any Hollywood movie or any action star from the West while working on the film.

Countering the accepted notion of inspiration between Bollywood and Hollywood when it comes to action, Vidyut sets the record straight. He clarifies, “People keep comparing our style of action with Hollywood, but that’s not true. The fact is that all the legendary actors from Hollywood and across the globe are basically inspired by our Indian martial art Kalaripayattu, which is around 3000 years old. So that way, we are not copying them, they were copying us. We are doing it, again and again, to show them how it should be done through the medium of cinema.”

“Comparing our style of action with Hollywood, I often hear people saying that Jackie Chan or some other actor has done this before. I think to even reach the capacity and level of Jackie Chan sir is a big deal. I have grown up watching his films on TV, VHS cassettes with stop, pause and rewind,” Vidyut adds.

Introducing a first-of-its-kind hostage drama in Hindi cinema, Vipul Amrutlal Shah, Disney+ Hotstar Multiplex and Zee Studios’ ‘Sanak – Hope Under Siege’ hopes to change the game in the action-entertainment space as this intriguing story unfolds in a hospital under siege.

Starring Vidyut Jammwal, Chandan Roy Sanyal, Neha Dhupia and Rukmini Maitra (who is making her Bollywood debut), ‘Sanak – Hope Under Siege’ is presented by Zee Studios in association with Sunshine Pictures Pvt Ltd and is streaming only on Disney+ Hotstar Multiplex. It is a Vipul Amrutlal Shah production, directed by Kanishk Varma.

Sonnalli Seygall goes through a gun training and learns Kalaripayattu for ‘Anamika’!

Sonnalli Seygall is currently shooting for Vikram Bhatt’s upcoming web show, ‘Anamika’, which also features Sunny Leone. Sonnalli plays a trained assassin in the series. The show is special for the actress because this is the first project where she’ll be seen doing action sequences.

Talking about the prep for the role and the new techniques she acquired, Sonnalli says, “I play Rhea, a trained assassin, who has got a killer instinct. She is extremely sharp and intelligent. There are a lot of running, fight and shooting sequences in the series. So I went through a gun training, where I learnt how to hold a gun and how to use it. I had basic fitness training for the show. Also, coincidently, I was travelling down south before the show and wanted to learn a martial arts form, so I learnt Kalaripayattu. That definitely came in handy during the shoot because any martial arts form gives you the right posture and body language.”

Talking more about the action sequences, she adds, “ For the fight sequences, we had trainers on the set and before any scene, there was a proper rehearsal with all the gear. Sunny and I rehearsed it over and over again. The training would happen under full professional guidance and supervision. Since I also do MMA and Calisthenics with my trainer Saurav Rathore, which involves a lot of jumps, body rolls and body training, that also came in handy while shooting for my part.”

The actress trained for about two hours every day, which included basic body weight training. “It helps me at the shoot. I also do a lot of cardio, as there are a lot of running and chasing sequences. On the set, I workout for 30 minutes for prep before every action sequence. It includes a lot of jumps,” says Sonnalli.

The actress doesn’t believe in being size zero; she likes to stay fit. “*Even during the lockdown, I made sure that I worked out and stayed fit. But I’m not somebody who’s very stringent about being a certain body type, because for me, all sizes are beautiful. I had put on a bit of weight because I eat everything, but I workout. For this role, I had to look leaner because as an assassin you can’t be on the heavier side. I had to be lean and agile,” says Sonnalli.
