Kavita Krishnamurti sings nine songs composed by her husband Dr. L Subramaniam

The album Hum Dono is a collaborative project of Kavita Krishnamurti Subramaniam and the music has been composed by Dr. L. Subramaniam. There are nine songs in the album featuring male singers Pt. Jasraj, Hariharan , Sonu Nigam, Suresh Wadkar and Lucky Ali with Kavita Krishnamurti. It was digitally released recently to celebrate love and its beautiful essence through music. We are releasing a video of Tum ho kahan with Sonu Nigam and the video for other songs will be subsequently released.

Kavita Krishnamurti expressed her feelings saying this is an album that got started when I recorded two songs for my husband Dr L Subramaniam just around the time I married him in 1999. Both the projects got abandoned but I liked the songs and then requested my husband to compose some more songs so that I can have a complete album.

I really looked forward to it as I knew it would be original and creative with a global approach. He was keen on making it a collaborative album with lots of duets with leading male vocalists. Everything seemed to fall into place. He had worked with Sameer ji earlier, so we requested him to write some of the songs.

After our marriage, we were greatly privileged when Javed Akhtar Saab wrote Tum ho Kahan as a wedding gift. How kind and generous of him.

I wanted my husband to meet Sri. Ravindra Jain, whom I greatly admire as a composer and poet. Ravindra Jainji blessed us by writing the lyrics for two songs – Mitwa re and Samarpan.

It was a great honour and blessing to have Sangeet Martand Pt. Jasrajji sings a fabulous alaap in the song Mitwa Re. Jasrajji and LS shared a great bond in music and performed together on many occasions in India and abroad.

When we recorded Saawan Saawan (sung by Hariharan and me, written by Sameer Anjaan), LS thought of doing a trilogy – a set of three songs that will somehow be linked to each other, bringing out the philosophy of life that nothing is permanent – everything is a passing cloud so we should utilise available time in a positive manner.

The first song – Saawan Saawan – is about the meeting of two people who then fall in love. It is a simple romantic song.

The second song Tum ho kahan (sung by Sonu Nigam and me, written by Javed Akhtar) comes at a point in life where one partner in the marriage calls out to the other, who seems to have more time for the world and less for the relationship. The heroine keeps saying “Main hoon yahan…” and ‘I will come whenever you call me…’ whereas the hero says, “Jab tak ye tan man hai, tab tak hee bandhan hai. Bandhan nahin rahenge kal apne darmiyaan!” If you don’t give time to your loved ones, it might be too late some day.

The third song is Mitwa re. Here the relationship has come to an end. The heroine sings, “Mitwa re, milan apna sapna. Beeta kal huye bekal. Jaane kahan tu basaa!” The male voice is in the background indicating the loss of a partner.

The other songs are all individually recorded as standalone songs. Each song has its own sentiment and the final song Samarpan (written by Ravindra Jain), underlines an aspect of the truth of our lives.

This album is a collaborative effort and many people have contributed heart and soul in making this happen. It has been a long journey, spanning more than two decades, to complete this album and I’m grateful that I have been allowed to stay in music through these years. I want to thank all the great musicians who have kindly lent their voices to my album. Various other musicians have contributed for different tracks and my thanks to all of them but I would especially like to mention with gratitude Tausif Akhtar, Jim Satya, Sanjay Wandrekar, Premik Russel Tubbs, and Deepak Walke.

Kavita Krishnamurti revealed that Farooq Sheikh helped her pass third year exams!

Padmashri Legends Pankaj Udhas and Kavita Krishnamurti come together at the virtual edition of Kala Ghoda Arts Festival on Insider.in. The duo have a long association with Kala Ghoda as they studied together in St. Xavier’s College and used to squat at Elphinstone’s canteen The Log Cabin, and then spend time at The Rhythm House to get an opportunity to listen to new records at the booths at the milestone location.

Jehangir Art Gallery’s Samovar was another favourite hangout and they still remember the cuisine. “Our Kala Ghoda festival started in 1972,” reasons Pankaj Udhas. Unfortunately Rhythm House and Samovar don’t exist any more. Kavita Krishnamurti speaks of her senior Pankaj Udhas and how they all looked up to him at college. “He has seen super stardom but it has never gone to his head. It is so difficult to become a star singing ghazals and it is an uphill task.”

Pankaj Udhas talks of the big college gang that used to sit below the trees and eat food from the tin roof canteen. “I was No. 1 in terms of bunking. I was a Science student, required 24×7 in class. My Botany Department would overlook canteen. My HOD Mr. Bhole used to see me laughing and the peon used to be sent to call me up,” he laughs.

Kavita Krishnamurti speaks, “Farooq Sheikh was part of our college. One day he saw me with a long face. I told him my attendance is less as I do a lot of jingles and programmes, and had to bunk, but only for music. He spoke to the Principal and helped me. In my third year, he took sessions for me and helped me tide through. It was so nice of him,” she recalls.

Pankaj Udhas talks of how the dreamers who were part of Sangeet Mandal and Natya Mandal, used to dream together. “Right from Anuradha Paudwal nee Alka Nadkarni, Kavita Krishnamurti, Nitin Ghat, Priti Moti Sagar Ranu Mukherjee (Hemant Kumar’s daughter), Natya Mandal had Farooq Sheikh, Smita Patil, Satish Shah who used to oscillate between Natya Mandal and Sangeet Mandal, Dalip Tahil, Shabana Azmi were senior to us, Anil Kapoor was junior to us… We all owe our encouragement to St. Xavier’s,” he recalls.

The duo also sang some amazing songs, keeping alive the joy of music that transported them in time. “St. Xavier’s has positive vibes that helped us all tide us through,” expresses Kavita Krishnamurti.

Kavita Krishnamurti’s this year’s birthday gift is her ‘daughter-in-law’!

Bollywood singer Kavita Krishnamurti and violinist Dr L Subramaniam’s son Ambi Subramaniam recently got married to Shreya Suresh. Kavita Krishnamurti said, “January 25 was a super day for me this year, because my son Ambi got married. That date happened to be a muhurtham day and also the day I was born. It is an awesome feeling to think that I got my daughter-in-law Shreya as a gift on my birthday. And for the rest of my life, I will be celebrating my birthday with my son’s wedding anniversary!”

Ambi Subramaniam said, “The wedding went off wonderfully well with our entire families and my closest friends being present, including my sapa team. Since January 25 is also happens to be my mother’s birthday, it was a double celebration in our family.”

The wedding ceremony took place in a resort in Mysore in the presence of immediate family members. It was conducted by following the South Indian traditions, with the blessings of Shankar Mutt and Sri Ganapathy Sachidananda Swamiji. During the ceremony, the groom, bride and the elders wore masks throughout the rituals. Strict protocols were followed and social distancing was ensured during the event. Even Dr. L. Subramaniam, Kavita Krishnamurti and their family were wearing a mask throughout the rituals. The wedding was followed by a private reception at their Bengaluru residence.

Kavita Krishnamurti and Dr. L Subramaniam on ‘Bharat Symphony’ song

The music industry is going all out not just to write, sing and perform during the lockdown but also create inspiring songs during these trying times. Reputed Tamil violinist and composer, Dr L Subramaniam recently created the single ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam’ that featured legendary singers. He also got Hema Malini and Pandit Birju Maharaj to perform in the video. The singers and performers completed shooting their parts with minimal technical support and created the video.

Talking about the project Dr L Subramaniam says, “The phrase ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam’ is from a beautiful Sanskrit verse from the Maha Upanishad. The meaning is basically that petty-minded people discriminate between a person who is a relative and a person who is not; but for the magnanimous ones, the whole world is one family. This attracted me so much that I used this particular verse in one of my compositions called Bharat Symphony, which I was commissioned to write by the city of Chicago.” The veteran composer’s project Bharat Symphony is basically the history of India in four movements including the Vedic period, Mughal period, British period, and Post-independence.

“For the fourth movement, I used this verse and recorded it with the London Symphony Orchestra and the London choir, with more than a hundred musicians being a part of it. During the recent lockdown, I thought I should take this separately and make a short video. My dream was to get some of the greatest singers to be part of it along with some of the greatest instrumentalists from around the world as well as a few important dancers. I couldn’t include everybody as I had limited time and limited space. I’m very thankful to artists like Pandit Jasraj, Pandit Birju Maharaj, Yesudas, SP Balasubrahmanyam, Hema Malini Ji, Usha Uthup among a lot of other greats. I am not mentioning all the names because I want you all to watch the video . This dream has become a reality by God’s grace and I am very grateful to all the artists who made it a reality,” he shares.

Kavita Krishnamurti adds, “I’m delighted to have been involved with this project because I think ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam ‘, is one of the great gifts from our Upanishads to the rest of the world. This was initially part of the fourth movement of Bharat Symphony and we decided to make this a special video involving many great artists from around the world. It is a great honour for me to sing these lines and it’s always a wonderful experience for me to work with my husband Dr. L Subramaniam’s composition. “
