One of the highly anticipated films #KUTTEY, directed by Aasman Bharadwaj has been released and has opened up to a good first-day collection with 1.07 cr. Between Bullet, Bloods, and Betrayal, KUTTEY showcases the story of several dogs after one bone which is being loved by the audiences. This film marks #AasmanBharadwaj’s debut as a director and stars #ArjunKapoor, #KonkonaSen, veteran actor #NaseeruddinShah, #RadhikaMadan, #Tabu with #KumudMishra and #ShardulBhardwaj in the lead.

Prior to the big release of the film, makers had created a ton of anticipation by hosting an event ‘Mehfil- E- Khaas’, where several renowned singers and poets such as legendary Gulzar Saab, Rekha Bharadwaj, Vishal Bharadwaj sang their respective poems and songs. The event was euphoric and a huge hit amongst the listeners.

Gopal is a police officer, a corrupt one. When confronted by his seniors for carrying out unauthorised raid he and his juniour Vikrant Raina (Kumud Mishra) get suspended. To get reinstated they approach a senior cop Pammi Raina (Tabu) and one crore each is demanded by her for ‘fixing’. To get the required cash Gopal and reluctant Vikrant plan to rob a van carrying crores of hard cash meant to refill the ATMs across the city. There are bunch of other people who too are in need of the cash, big cash, for different reasons. That include Anushka Sharma (Radhika Madan) and her beau (Shardul Bharadwaj), Naxalites including Mallika Raina (Konkona Sen Sharma) and others. In between a lot of gun fighting and expletive laden curses the characters follow the premise, dog eat dog.

Aasman Bharadwaj should be congratulated to have created a thriller with complexities. His writing is praiseworthy and the screenplay has come out well. The unpredictability in it is engrossing but the direction should have been a bit more sleeker. The subtle humour in the dark world is entertaining. Music by Vishal Bharadwaj is excellent. All the eight songs are very good. Cinematography is excellent and editing is crisp. The ensemble cast has done extremely well. Tabu has played a boss lady cop with ease and brings a lot of humour to the fore. Arjun Kapoor has done a fine job in a grey shaded role. Kumud Mishra too is excellent and gets to showcase his wares in a lengthy role. Naseeruddin Shah, Radhika Madan, Shardul Bharadwaj, Konkona Sen Sharma play their role with utter convincing power.

Kuttey justifies the title and is a psychological thriller.

“Working with Arjun Kapoor was fantastic. Actually, I was a little nervous when I went on the set the first day because he is a very big star and this was just my second project. Arjun Kapoor is one of the most down-to-earth actors I’ve seen. The first time he came on set, he actually introduced himself to us. It was very kind of him. Also, he doesn’t have any attitude and is a gentleman,” she said.

“He is not like one of those actors who would come on the set, complete their work and go. He would usually stay with everyone and was concerned about the scene and outfits that he and his partner were wearing. He thinks of everything from a 360-degree perspective. I really appreciate him for that,” she added.

Sharing details about her character and her experience, she said, “My character is of a simple lady who takes care of the house and the family. Her husband (Arjun Kapoor) is a cop and he has a busy lifestyle but like any wife, she has expectations from her husband and keeps nagging him about not spending enough time with her.”

She added, “My part of the film has been shot in and around Mumbai. We shot it in studios, auditoriums, roads, big apartments and most of it was in the car. That was a very unique experience for me because shooting in a moving car also comes with its challenges. However, it gave me a chance to interact with Arjun more. Though all my scenes are only with Arjun, I also wanted to share screen with Tabu ma’am, Naseeruddin (Shah) sir, and Konkona Sen. However,I am grateful for whatever I got.”

Rewati complimented director Aasaman Bharadwaj too for making it a smooth journey for her. She said, “Initially, I was a bit nervous to even start a conversation with him but he is so approachable and he lets you be who you are. He would always give you the space to try new things. He made the whole set so comfortable for everyone which made a lot of difference.”

“In fact, I remember when there was a dialogue and I told it my way and he did appreciate me and told me that this was better in my way. When it was my last day of the shoot I went to change and when I came out I saw everyone stayed back for me and they praised me. It meant a lot because giving so much importance to every character is a big thing,” she concluded.

Composer of the music of the much-awaited song, Vishal Bhardwaj, shares his thoughts of what went behind composing it. He said, “‘Phir Dhan Te Nan’ is an emotion which wells up inside you. It’s catchy, yet stirs up the memories of the original song, Dhan Te Nan, which was a chartbuster that never lost its charm. It is played even today. Perhaps that’s why, initially it was challenging for us to compose Phir Dhan Te Nan think about making changes to the original tune. We needed to integrate both, keeping the originality of the former with the freshness of the latter intact. Another challenge was that Dhan Te Nan is so perfect. That’s why had to have multiple sittings, discussions and jamming sessions before finalising the new version. Dhan Te Nan was composed more than a dozen years ago, so we had to keep in mind that the changes in the new version had to reflect the contemporary beats and music of today yet have its soul intact. A major decision was retaining the original singers and lyricist again, Sukhwinder and Vishal Dadlani, singing Phir Dhan Te Nan with the legendary Gulzar saab writing the lyrics. We will always be extremely thankful to Gulzar saab for helping us with this one too. Vishal’s vibrant voice combined with Sukhwinder’s crooning spells magic for our song. It’s sensuous, rhythymic and pulsating. Now it’s all out and all yours to feel the magic too.”
