Nitin Kumar Gupta, director of ‘L.A.C controversy’ was d isturbed at the propaganda his film was being used for!

#NitinKumarGupta’s forthcoming project #LAC recently courted controversy. Stills and videos from the film, mistaken to be real happening in the #IndoChina border, went viral. The director shares that they were not expecting something like this to happen with the film that stars actors #RahulRoy and #NishantSinghMalkhani, among others.

“I was shooting my new film in Russia when my friends forwarded some Twitter posts where footage from my film L.A.C was shown as Indian soldiers having captured 150 Chinese soldiers. I thought it was a one-off post but then I started receiving messages from everywhere about this news. I also found out that on the other side, Chinese websites were using stills from my film to show the victory of their soldiers. I was disturbed at the propaganda my film was being used for, but as a director I also felt satisfied that my film looked authentic enough to convince viewers. I immediately issued a clarification on my Instagram account,” says Nitin.

The film L.A.C. is loosely based on incidents and activities that happen at our borders.
“We used real life incidents and fictionalised them. Since we used over 500 actors for some scenes, it was impossible to keep cell phone filming under control. Some of the actors filmed the fight sequences and uploaded them on their YouTube channels. Parts of these were picked up by various viewers and used for the wrong reasons,” he explains further.

Filmed in the winter of 2020 in real war locations in Kargil for over 25 days, L.A.C, according to Nitin, is Bollywood”s first single shot film. It runs without a single cut. Real army costumes and gears were used to make it look real. The post production of L.A.C has just been completed in Russia. “We have offers from a few OTT platforms but we are looking for a theatrical release if possible,” says the director.

It is often said that both good and bad publicity helps. “Yes, controversy surrounding a film always leads to hype. But if the controversy causes negative feelings towards the subject or to anyone in real life, I would rather stay away from such controversies. The intention of a film should be to entertain, not hurt anyone,” adds Nitin.

Chandni Soni : OTT has opened the doors of umpteen opportunities!

Producer Chandni Soni, who has recently worked on the film LAC, says that she had an amazing time on the project. Chandni, who has produced the series Raktanchal before, says that production is challenging as well as a great learning experience. “Producing good content can be quite challenging. Especially because of Covid and the lockdown, our projects got delayed. Finding a good script which resonates with the audience is another challenge,” she says.

Talking about why and how she decided to get into production, Chandni says, “I have always been a creative person since childhood. I used to take part in various extra-curricular activities back then. Then, I went on to professionally learn Kathak. After marriage, my husband, Neeraj Soni encouraged me to continue my creative journey which translated into becoming a producer and creating good content for the audience.”

The producer is a big fan of OTT platforms and says that the web has a bright future. “OTT has opened the doors of umpteen opportunities. Especially during the lockdown, people discovered OTT in a big way. As a producer, I think OTT gives me the opportunity to reach a wider audience and create content which is out of the box,” she says.

Talking about future plans, Chandni says, “Indian culture is very rich. I think we have not yet properly explored Indian mythological stories. I’d love to do some great work in this genre.”

Chitra Vakil Sharma is proud be associated with LAC!

Producer Chitra Vakil Sharma has her plate full of meaningful projects which she is very proud of. Talking about all that she is involved with currently, Chitra says, “I started with a web series in 2019 as associate producer. It was called Bhram and starred Kalki. Then I did Raktanchal. I am currently producing Tandoor and a couple of more web series, which will come this year. Besides these, Raktanchal 2 is also going on the floor soon. During the lockdown, we did a corona anthem song with Kunal Ganjawala starring Manish Raisingh. I am also producing a film titled LAC, which will release soon. Another film of mine Sarvagun Asampan is already in pre-production.”

Not many know but Chitra’s entry into showbiz was far from regular. “I come from a very humble and progressive family where I was supported for dreaming big and realising my dreams. I started my career in the corporate world and right after my marriage, I started working with a consultant legal law firm. This opened up avenues to meet people in the industry. My aspirations and zeal to organise things resonated with the role of producer and here I am!” she says.

Her film LAC has been directed by Nitin Kumar Gupta, who she shares a great equation with. “Nitin and I go back a decade. He was my client at the law firm. We met on my set of Tandoor recently and from there our production association started.

Nitin is an amazing human being to work with. He is totally focused and to the point. Nitin and my association is going to go long way. He is a superb writer-director and producer partner. He knows what he wants,” she says.

Talking about producing LAC, Chitra says, “This project was and is not only about producing India’s 1st one-shot film, this is like playing a part in spreading an integral message to our society with a different lens. It’s been an experience full of mixed emotions and excitement which not only makes you strong but equally vulnerable to understand what lies beneath and what is the cost of the super freedom that you and I enjoy today. While the world was fighting Covid-19, our Indian army was fighting for our country. I am proud to be associated with this film and I owe it to Nitin for having faith in me.”

Nitin Kumar Gupta believes that outdoor action scenes with large crowds inspire awe in the audience

Writer-director Nitin Kumar Gupta reveals that it is tough controlling and filming large crowds in action scenes, but the outcome is always rewarding. The director, who recently shot for his film LAC, says that the film has a lot of such sequences. Talking about the same, Nitin says, “Outdoor action scenes with large crowds inspire awe in the audience and add scale to the film. Imagine Bahubali without its armies, or Titanic without it’s panicking passengers. That’s why I incorporate large crowd action scenes in all my films,” he says, adding, “In my latest film ‘L.A.C.’ We filmed hundreds of Indian and enemy soldiers fighting it out in rough terrain in Kargil, even as it was snowing. Apart from the main actors, I hired all the extras from Kargil, because they are used to the terrain and weather. We had an extensive briefing about what each person had to do before even allowing them to take positions, especially as they were supposed to be trying to kill each other! Things can get out of hand easily if the briefing is not clear.”

In fact, such scenes are a big part of all his films. “I filmed with 300 European extras in my film ‘Death of an Ambassador’, recreating the horrific truck attack where a terrorist drives a truck over dozens of celebrating citizens in Paris. It was subzero weather and the extras did not even understand English. But I managed with hand gestures and google translate, along with a couple of local assistants,” he says.

He adds, “For my film ‘Sayonee’ which released in December 2020, we had a crowd scene where the hero charges through the Russian mafia’s villa shooting through dozens of guests and guards before a hand to hand brawl in a huge jacuzzi. It was difficult choreographing a large shootout in the beautiful villa, but the warm jacuzzi made the actors and camera team happy!”

The energy of the crowd is always motivating. “In my film ‘Walk’ which is in post-production, we recreated the bus stop panic scene and the inter-state border crowd situation that happened during the lockdown. Totally opposite to filming in Europe and Kargil, this time we were filming at a scorching 40 degrees in Rajasthan and it was exhausting, but the locals went through multiple takes with enthusiasm. A loud ‘well done’ after every shot keeps everyone’s spirits up” he says.

‘Stroke’ maker Nitin Kumar Gupta refutes allegations of “dancing on stroke patient’s tragedy”

Actor Rahul Roy and director Nitin Kumar Gupta have always been close. In fact, Rahul has starred in multiple films helmed by the latter including Sayonee, Walk etc. Kumar has also stated that Rahul will be starring in his next film titled Stroke. While Rahul was shooting for Nitin’s LAC: Live The Battle in Kargil, a few days back, when he suffered from a stroke and had to be airlifted to Srinagar and brought to Mumbai. After that, there was an article doing the rounds where two people, Priyanka and Romeer, who claim to be Rahul’s sister and brother-in-law, have alleged that not only does Rahul have nothing to do with the film Stroke but have also accused Nitin of trying to garner publicity by making a film about a stroke patient and “dancing on their tragedy”.

However, Nitin strongly refutes these claims. He starts off by saying that both Priyanka and Romeer are not really who they say they are. “The article reports Priyanka as Rahul’s sister and Romeer as his brother-in-law which is false. Rahul has only met both of them 2-3 years back,” he says, adding, “The article also says that my film ‘Stroke’ would essay Rahul as a paralytic patient, which is false. The role is of a stroke victim without any paralysis elements whatsoever.”

In the aforementioned article Priyanka also says that Rahul’s twin brother Rohit, who stays in the US, arranged for six commandoes through a brigadier to go and see Rahul and it was only after that that he was airlifted to Srinagar and brought to Mumbai. However, Nitin says that none of this is true. “Priyanka mentions six commandos who went to see Rahul. This is false. My production person and actor Vishal Sharma took Rahul Roy to Army Hospital and Kargil District Hospital for CT scan. As soon as I returned from the shoot that day, I took him to the district hospital myself for further checkup,” he says, adding, “I wrote to the Kargil district magistrate Mr Basheer for helicopter permission immediately and as soon as he gave permission, I paid for Rahul’s helicopter airlift to Srinagar and flight to Mumbai. There was no army involvement and no commandos were involved in the operation.”

Priyanka has also claimed that Nitin was not responding to her calls. However, Nitin says that he was in touch with Rahul’s brother throughout. “Priyanka says I wasn’t responding to her calls but the fact is that she never called and most of our filming locations were off-network. I don’t have any missed call intimation from her whatsoever, neither on phone nor on Whatsapp. I had been constantly in touch with Rahul’s twin brother Rohit,” he explains.

Both Romeer and Priyanka have questioned Nitin’s claim that Rahul is part of his next film Stroke. However, Nitin says that Rahul has given him the consent to cast him in all of his films, without seeking his permission every time. “On whether I have Rahul’s permission to cast him in Stroke or not, I have filmed four films with Rahul Roy – Sayonee, Walk, L.A.C and Death of an Ambassador. I am not someone who wants to make a fast buck on his name, but someone who has stood by him and rejected other actors for him. Rahul himself has stated that he will be part of any film I make and has jokingly threatened me not to make any film without him. So, in fact, I do have blanket permission from him to cast him in any film that I make,” he says.

After a stint in BB14, Nishant Singh Malkhani to play an army officer in ‘LAC’

Actor Nishant Singh Malkhani, last seen in Bigg Boss, is currently shooting a web film called LAC. This film is being shot on the heavenly grounds of Kargil. He is playing an army officer in the film. What made him say yes to this film? He says,”This is the first one-shot film in Bollywood. It is like the 1917 Hollywood film which goes on for 90minutes with no cuts. It’s very interesting to watch. The same kind of technique and technology has been used to make this film.” The film is written directed and produced by Nitin Kumar Gupta and Chitra Vakil Sharma.

The film is based on the true events of 2020. Nishant adds, ”The story focuses on a frontline soldier in the Galwan Valley. The Chinese are trying to occupy Indian territory and this soldier is key to disarming the Chinese army.

“I am playing an army officer and the character is very patriotic. He is always ready to give up his life for his country and he is somebody who doesn’t think twice before getting into the battle with the enemy. He is a very daredevil kind of character; he’s not afraid of death and is an ideal Indian army officer. I have so much respect for the Indian Army and it’s an honor for me to play an army officer.”

Speaking about the extreme weather in Kargil, Nishant says, ”The shooting is happening in Kargil, a rough terrain, and it is so frosty and cold there. The temperatures go down to -13, -12 degrees. It is freezing cold and the ceaseless winds had me shivering all the time. Shooting in such conditions is very difficult. I have an extreme amount of respect for the Indian forces for guarding our country in such conditions. I always did, but I realized it after experiencing Kargil in real life. On set, we still get some luxuries and comfort. But these soldiers protect us in cruel weather conditions, rough terrains with only their rudiments and I find that to be so amazing. I salute our armed forces for protecting us. While we are sleeping peacefully at night, they are working hard protecting us.” The film is expected to release in January 2021.

“Mission R&AW” will capture the paradigm shift in the Indian intelligence gathering

Recently India is trying to stop China from violating LAC agreement. After Corona virus Impact world over China may have tried to shift the focus to a warlike situation. In all International matters intelligence agencies play crucial part. Now an upcoming web series “Mission R&AW” will capture the paradigm shift in the Indian intelligence gathering. In a first-of-its-kind, a web series putting a spotlight on Rameshwar Nath Kao,founder of Research and Analysis Wing (R&AW), India’s foreign intelligence agency and its manoeuvres in disputes with foreign nations will be showcased on an OTT platform. The spy thriller web series is an adaptation of a 2014 book- titled “Mission R&AW”- authored by former R&AW officer R K Yadav. The series will be produced by Bohra Bros which has over 36 movies to his credit including national award winning “Shahid” and critically acclaimed “Gangs of Wasseypur”.

Confirming the development, R K Yadav told “My book gives an insight into the professional acumen of Mr Kao and how R&AW came into inception. Despite his many achievements he was monitoring China in 1962 war when he was attached with Jawaharlal Nehru as his PSO”. Elaborating, Yadav told that besides giving a detailed account of the little known journey of Kao, his book also chronicles the 1962 war with China and the intelligence gathering techniques adopted by R&AW. “Kao told me that US had proposed to Jawaharlal Nehru a nuclear action against China in case conflict escalated in November 1962. Thereafter Nehru rejected the Chinese proposal of summit with them and demanded Chinese withdrawal beyond LAC which China had to concede to. Disintegration of Pakistan in 1971 was joint strategy of Kao and late Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw”.

When contacted, Sunil Bohra told “to document the story of Mr R N Kao is by far my life’s most challenging and important project. Our team has been working on this project for the past two years. The book authored by Mr Yadav gives an elaborate account of the founder and India’s foremost intelligence agency”. Bohra added “Having perused the details, we realised that it would be unfair to encapsulate the astounding story of Kao in merely two hours. Hence, we have decided to make a web series so that justice can be done to the man who we, and our generations to come, all should be proud of. A team of experts will be roped in and the series will be shot in China, Bangladesh, China, Sikkim, USA”.

As per available information, the web series will chronicle the infamous sabotage of “Kashmir princess”, a chartered aircraft owned by Air India in 1955 which while en route from India to Indonesia was damaged in mid- air by a bomb explosion and had crashed into the South China sea claiming sixteen lives on board. Investigations into the sabotage led by Kao had revealed that the then Chinese premier Zhou Enlai, who missed the flight due to a medical emergency was the prime target. The web series will capture the “emergence of Indira Gandhi” after the sudden death of Lal Bahadur Shastri in Tashkent and her decision to form R&AW under the aegis of R N Kao.

Also, the thriller series will capture the paradigm shift in the intelligence gathering by the agencies post the Sino-Indian war, the 1965 war with Pakistan and the role of R&AW in other international disputes.
