The last remaining city, Kasi, is under the tyrannical rule of Commander Manas (Saswata Chatterjee) and governed by the enigmatic God King Supreme Yaskin (Kamal Haasan), who resides in a mysterious fortress known as the Complex where fertile women are executed and men getting enslaved. Bhairava (Prabhas) seems to be a savior of Shambhala. The rebels of Shambhala rescue SUM80 (Deepika Padukone) who is pregnant and is destined to give birth to an avatar who will save the earth from the cluthes of evil forces like Supreme Yaskin. What transpires around it forms the crux of the story.

Writer-director Nag Ashwin employs his creative talent to immerse the audience in a visually breathtaking universe through his storytelling. The first half drags but things pick up in the latter part. Production design is fantabulous but there are flaws in the scripting. Too many situations and too many characters are distracting. The cinematography by Djordje Stojilijkovic is breathtaking. Amitabh Bachchan stands out and one gets a feeling that he is the main lead. Prabhas has done justice to his character but futile attempt to create comedy (writing flaw) should have been avoided.

Deepika Padukone delivers a commendably restrained performance as a character who is destined to gain immense power. Saswata Chatterjee’s portrayal of Commander Manas is loud. Kamal Haasan, once again, excels in a uniquely chilling role. Cameo appearances by Vijay Deverakonda, Mrunal Thakur, Dulquer Salmaan, S.S. Rajamouli, and Ram Gopal Varma, though brief, leave a lasting impression.

I have personally participated in these festivities in the past. Numerous individuals flock to the Shri Krishna Janmabhoomi Temple in Mathura to partake in the celebrations. The city comes alive with performances of Krishna’s Rasleelas by amateur artists. Some of these enactments are so captivating that devotees are engulfed by their devotion to Lord Krishna. In my hometown of Varanasi, significant celebrations were also held. My grandmother would craft special prasads like Malai Peda, Charnamrit, and Dhaniya Panjiri, offered as a tribute to Lord Krishna. Subsequently, we would visit temples to distribute these homemade offerings and engage in the bhajans sung there. I even requested a Radha costume from my mother during childhood, a delight I relished wearing. May Lord Krishna bestow love and concord upon us all. Wishing you a joyful Janmashtami.”

Shubhangi Atre, Angoori Bhabi from Bhabhiji Ghar Par Hai, shares, “I recall how all the temples in Madhya Pradesh would be splendidly decorated during this period, and the matki-tod ceremony was truly mesmerising to witness. My father used to accompany me to the renowned Laxminarayan Temple, also known as the Birla Temple or Krishna Parnami Temple, where the festivities unfolded on a grand scale to seek blessings. Back at home, we would paint baby footprints on the floor, symbolising the strides of Baal Krishna. We would stay awake until midnight for the aarti, savouring homemade delicacies such as Makhan mishri, lauki ki barfi, makhana kheer, and more, lovingly prepared by my mother and Dadi (grandmother), and then offered to Lord Krishna. The entire preparation for the festival exuded an aura of pure delight, saturating the surroundings with positivity. I yearn to relive these experiences once more. May Lord Krishna bestow joy and serenity upon this Janmashtami upon everyone’s lives.”

Aayudh Bhanushali, aka Krishna from Doosri Maa, shares, “Hailing from Gujarat, where Janmashtami is embraced with immense enthusiasm, this festival holds a special corner in my heart for numerous reasons. While my mother and the other women at home fast on this day, the children decorate the cradle with flowers and garlands in anticipation of Kanha Ji’s arrival. The celebrations commence with bathing the Krishna idol in milk and water. We dress the idol in new attire and jewellery, followed by a midnight aarti and mangal aarti. Our offerings to the Lord encompass Makhana pag, Kheer, Charnamrit, and Ladoo enriched with dry fruits. Exploring nearby Krishna temples, we participate in the festivities, witnessing embellishments and revelries, including skits based on Lord Krishna’s teachings in the Bhagavad Gita. Garba dancing becomes a spirited engagement, and the esteemed Dwarkadhish Temple is adorned most splendidly. It’s my tradition to personify Krishna while my sisters embody Gopis. I’m eagerly looking forward to celebrating with my family this year.”

RJ Mohit, aka Manoj from Doosri Maa, shares, “Jaipur comes alive with vibrant Janmashtami celebrations. Temples are embellished with intricate decorations, and unique rituals take place. The community observes fasting, offers prayers, and participates in heartfelt devotional singing and dancing. The city radiates a jubilant ambience with various cultural performances and events. The Govind Dev Ji and Krishna Balram temple stands out as a central hub for these celebrations, and I always seize the opportunity to visit, fully immersing myself in the festive spirit.”

Charrul Malik, Rusa from Happu Ki Ultan Paltan, shares, “Chandigarh embraces Janmashtami with immense enthusiasm. Temples are decked out, prayers reverberate, and devotional melodies fill the air. Traditional dances like Raas Leela captivate participants. The city buzzes with a festive atmosphere and collective gatherings. Krishna idols are bathed and adorned, and delectable sweets take centre stage. It’s a time of both devotion and exuberance. Alongside my family, we visit these temples, seeking blessings and marvelling at the distinct decorations each one showcases. In Chandigarh, a mela is also organised, sparking excitement in my siblings and me as we indulge in treats and pick-up toys. Among my cherished festivals, I am sure to witness this splendour whenever I have the chance to return to my hometown.”

Saanand Verma, Anokhe lal Saxena from Bhabhiji Ghar Par Hai, shares, “My family ardently reveres Lord Krishna. My mother has embraced Krishna as a cherished family member; he is cared for at home with the same devotion as any relative. While I wouldn’t label myself a devout follower, I participate in and observe this festival because our family holds Krishna in high regard. The festivity is celebrated extravagantly in my hometown of Patna, with 56 varieties of Bhog and Krishna dressed in vibrant yellow attire. A cradle is meticulously prepared and adorned with flowers, and Bhajans are melodiously played all day in his honour. As a child, I vividly remember the enthusiasm surrounding the festival. Staying awake until midnight for Janmashtami was a special thrill, and after the pooja, we would relish sweets and makhan, just as Krishna Ji would have.”

Talking about shooting for the sequence Neha Sargam essaying the role of Maiyaa Yashoda says, “I have always loved singing and when I got to know that Trisha will be singing for this sequence, I was extremely thrilled. I recalled the days when I was trying for Indian Idol. In between shots Trisha and I would sit together and practice the song. I would give her guidance and to my surprise, she would catch it instantly. Trisha is a very talented child and has a long way to go. I thoroughly enjoyed shooting this sequence with her.”

Ashoka Thackur : Shree Krishna has a lot of impact not only in my life but in everyone’s life. I am a very devotional person, and a very big believer of Shri Krishna. My dad’s name is also Kishan, and his birthday comes on Janmashtami itself, because of which the celebration becomes more special for us. Since he is named after Krishna ji, I feel that there’s a very strong connection between them. We celebrate the birthday and also perform Krishna puja at home, and fast the whole day. Radha-Krishna’s love story is one of my favourites. Their eternal love is inspiring. There is a lot to learn from him, it is a never-ending process. Their love teaches us honesty, trust and respect.

Himanshu Malhotra : I played Vishnu who is an avatar of Krishna in television. It was a great experience playing the role of a God in a TV show and was a great experience. I like Lord Krishna’s philosophies. I will also visit Iskcon temple on Janmashtami and will eat prasad there. My favourite saying of Lord Krishna is ‘The only way you can conquer me is through love and there I am gladly conquered’.

Mreenal Deshraj : I cherish Janmashtami a lot. It seems as though Lord Krishna himself solved all my issues. May the Makhan Chor also steal your worries and offer you peace and happiness within this Janmashtami. I can still picture myself going to the Krishna Janmohatsav at midnight. My favourite quote from Lord Krishna is: “Do everything you have to do, but do not do it with greed, ego, desire, or envy; rather, do it with love, compassion, humility, and devotion.”

Ssudeep Sahir : I think not everyone in their acting career gets to play Lord Krishna and I consider myself extremely fortunate that I got to play three avatars—Lord Krishna, Lord Vishnu and Lord Ram in Param Avtaar Shri Krishna. As kids in Delhi, I remember we used to celebrate Janmashtami, make Krishnaji’s house, and swing in our society. It was like a big celebration and I have some very happy memories from that time. My favourite saying & something I try my best to follow is – ‘Karm kar, phal ki chinta mat kar’.

Amal Sehrawat : Yes, I am a devotee of Krishna, and Krishan Ji holds a special place in my heart. I remember going for Pooja at the community temple on Janmashtami. We all greatly enjoy Dahi Handi, which also takes place. I read a few pages of the Bhagwat Gita whenever I have time because I believe in it. My favourite saying is-“अहंकार मत कर किसी को कुछ भी देकर, क्या पता – तू दे रहा है, या पिछले जन्म का ‘कर्जा’ चुका रहा है॥” which means, one should not be arrogant while giving charity at any time in life, because maybe he is paying the debt of his previous birth by donating to whom he is giving.

Manish Naggdev : Lord Krishna is such a Charismatic God! I am a Mahadev Devotee but Lord Krishna has a special place in my heart. I do a regular puja on that day but at our place we only eat vegetarian food that has more starters and snacks till the evening. We also go out and watch a few dahi-handi celebrations and also watch a good film. The key to happiness is the reduction of desires is my favourite saying of Krishna ji.

Mitaali Nag : Lord Krishna is a beautiful mix of mischief, love, wit and valour. His teachings in Bhagavad Gita help us in every step of our lives. I love the celebration of Krishna Janmashtami. I decorate my puja room, dress my Bal Gopal (baby Krishna) in a new and beautiful attire. I also make prasad for him and sing bhajans. Due to work commitments, I am not always able to invite friends to distribute the prasad but I take the prasad to shoot the next day. I believe in everything he said and my most favourite would be —“A man is made by his beliefs. As he believes, so he becomes”! Life coaches around the world are teaching this now.

Mitu : Janmashtami has always been a big festival in our household as we come from North India. And, my first memories of Janmashtami are of seeing jhankis being made by my childhood friend’s brother. It was very intriguing. After coming to Mumbai, it was about Dahi handi and it intrigues me too. But after the birth of my daughter, things have become more relevant about Yashoda maiya and Deviki maiya and Krishna ji during Janmashtami. I am not a devotee of Krishna ji but yes, we celebrate Janmashtami as a big festival in our own way.

Sudhanshu Pandey : The significance of Lord Krishna in my life is probably the same as Arjun’s. I feel Lord Krishna is someone who guides you through the struggles of life and gives you directions. I pray to Lord Krishna as well as Bhagwan Ram, Vishnu and Mahadev. Once upon a time Radha asked Lord Krishna ‘Krishna aap mujhse byah kyu nahi karte’ Krishna said, ‘Radhe biyah doo logon ke bich main hota hai aur hum mai se dusra kon hai’. I think this is one of the best words to express the love between two people who become one in life. We don’t do any special puja during Janmashtami. In my childhood, I used to go and enjoy celebrating Janmashtami in our area and as a kid I loved to celebrate it.

Mrunal Jain : I am very attached to lord Krishna. Ironically, I played Krishna in Ekta Kapoor’s Mahabharat. I fitted the role and got a lot of appreciation too. I am religious in nature who absolutely believes in God. I perform little puja at home on Janmashtami and go to the Krishna temple nearby too. My favourite lord Krishna saying is, ‘The key to happiness is the reduction of desires.’

Aditya Deshmukh : I would like to wish everyone a very Happy Janmashtami. Being a Brahmin I am a very devotional person towards all the gods, not a particular god that I worship to be honest. During our school day, our moral science taught us that all gods are one and when you worship any one of them it means you’re worshiping all the gods. For me all the gods mean a lot and I believe in the power and there’s someone who’s always looking after you, taking good care of you as an angel guardian. We shouldn’t remember our lords only during festivals but they should be in heart always and should worship all of them. As Krishnaji was born at midnight, so my father prepares a sweet which is called Shunta. It’s a really very special sweet it is made on every special occasion and is very significant. We used to have our exams during Janmashtami so we barely used to enjoy Dahi handi but we used to enjoy it to the fullest. Family, and friends come together and it’s a really fun time to celebrate it with them.

Avinash Mukherjee : Every God has their own devotees. There are people who like a particular God which are completely personal. Yes, Krishna is one of the most beloved God, he has taught us many things in life. I have personally read Geeta. Teachings which he has given are still applicable and relevant in today’s time. He is a sign of pure blissed and passionate love. I’ll be performing pooja on the show’s set. My favourite Lord Krishna saying will be when Krishna said to Arjun nothing is above Dharma. Dharma is at its highest position and will always be.
