“This album is something that I was called to make,” Raja Kumari shares. “Certain events in my life, like the cancellation of my tour two years ago, led me towards spirituality. After that, I kept getting visions of Kedarnath Temple, so I didn’t waste time and visited the shrine. As I stood before Lord Shiva, I asked what I should do next, and the answer was clear—surrender. Since then, I knew this was the first project I had to create.”

Her classical roots play a significant role in the album, especially in The Destroyer. “Shiv Tandav has always been a dance I loved as a child. Dressing as Shiva, enacting destruction and creation—it’s always been a part of me. I incorporated the jati from my childhood compositions to honor my years of training.” She also ensured proper pronunciation of Sanskrit verses, believing that “there’s a different energy when you speak the words correctly.”

For Raja Kumari, Maha Shivratri is now deeply personal. “I spend the night in meditation, receiving the high-frequency energies of this sacred time. As a hopeless romantic, I’m also inspired by Shiva and Parvati’s love story, which led me to observe the Sola Somvaar Vrat.”

With Kashi to Kailash, Raja Kumari hopes to bring devotional music into modern times. “I want this album to be a part of people’s celebrations.”

He added, “Shivratri transcends geographical boundaries, uniting devotees worldwide in the celebration of divine grace and spiritual awakening. As for the rituals, he asserted that the celebration of Shivratri varies across regions and communities, but certain rituals, like fasting and prayers, are common. He added, “Devotees observe strict fasts on Shivratri, abstaining from food and water throughout the day and night. Fasting is believed to purify the body and soul, enabling devotees to attain spiritual purity and connect with the divine.”

The other ritual that is followed on Shivratri is Abhishekam, which is the ceremonial bathing of the Shiva Lingam, with water, milk, honey, yogurt, and other sacred substances. This ritual signifies the purification of the soul and the offering of devotion to Lord Shiva. Devotees also visit temples to offer prayers and perform Aarti, a ritual of waving lighted lamps before the deity. Offerings of fruits, flowers, and incense are made as expressions of reverence and gratitude.

He also shared, “Devotees stay awake throughout the night, engaging in meditation, chanting sacred mantras like the Mahamrityunjaya Mantra, and listening to discourses on the glory of Lord Shiva. It is believed that staying awake on Shivratri cleanses one’s sins and brings spiritual awakening.”

Acharya ji believes that, at its core, Shivratri is a celebration of introspection, renewal, and transcendence. “It serves as a reminder of the eternal truths of existence—the impermanence of life, the power of devotion, and the ultimate reality beyond the material world. As devotees immerse themselves in the divine aura of Shivratri, they seek not just blessings but also inner transformation and enlightenment,” he said, with a message, “In Shivratri 2024, let us embark on this spiritual journey with renewed zeal and devotion, honoring the divine presence within and around us. Expressing how she celebrated this year, Deepshika says, “Maha Shivratri is a festival that I like to celebrate every year with my friends and family as I am a big Lord Shiv Bhakt. And this year it was even more special because I just moved to a new house so it was like a small house warming pooja too. Having these poojas at home on such an auspicious day is a tradition that my parents inculcated in me and now I want to make my children learn the same. My friends like Ayub Khan, Payal Malhotra, Kashmira Shah, Sushant Divgikar, Delnaaz Irani and Rohit Verma who have now turned into family, like always were part of my celebration. And I like to always celebrate with them, be it a party or a pooja.”

Talking about the festival and one fond memory of the same, Deepshika says, “When I was around 15 years old, we had a pooja and a celebration at home. And hailing from Agra, my father would always bring bhang like a ‘prasad’ from Lord Shiv. So, this time, he kept the bhang mixed thandai right next to the regular thandai and asked the kids not to touch it. But with my curiosity on a rise, I actually gulped 4-5 glasses of the bhang mixed drink and didn’t wake for 3 days (laughs). That has to be one of my fondest memories of the festival for sure.”

That indeed was a memory for a lifetime.
