Calling the experience “a welcome change of pace,” Kale shared that he was especially moved by the audience’s energy. “Whoever was struggling in the game got cheered a lot. It told me the crowd wasn’t just rooting for a player, but for the sport itself,” he said after watching the thrilling clash between #CarlosAlcaraz and #JannikSinner.

For Kale, this spirit mirrors his own world. “Both music and sport demand discipline, focus, and the ability to zone in amidst the noise. Whether you land the perfect note or serve an ace, the joy it sparks is the same,” he reflected.

Fresh off the success of his concert tour ‘Abhangwari’ and the recently released song by the same name, Mahesh Kale has always been a self-confessed sports enthusiast. “I was one of those four boys in class who played all the sports,” he reminisced. “Of course, like every Indian child, I played cricket, but I also ran short-distance sprints, played volleyball, badminton, and basketball.” Fondly recalling a personal memory from his early days playing badminton, when he accompanied his elder brother to practice and unexpectedly caught the attention of a coach, he expressed, “The coach asked me to play and ended up taking me into an advanced batch. He said I had a flair for the game… that moment has always stayed with me.”

That early encouragement has stayed with him, shaping not just his love for sport but also his approach to music and life. As he puts it, “Sports taught me to take life in a spirited way… to enjoy the process regardless of the outcome.”

Ashish Shelar, who came to the concert straight from Pandharpur, remarked that he had journeyed “from the Pandharpur Wari to Mahesh Kale’s ‘Abhangwari’.” He shared that the concert was steeped in deep devotion to Lord Vitthal and added, “this programme has left a lasting and uplifting impression on me and everyone in the audience.”

Written, composed and sung by Kale himself, the song ‘Abhangwari’ marks a milestone in his illustrious journey – it is the first of the many Abhangs that he has composed and performed. Rooted in the centuries-old tradition of Abhangs (devotional poetry dedicated to Lord Vitthal), the song carries a personal and spiritual resonance for the artiste.

“While researching the term ‘Abhangwari’, I was not able to find evidence of the term being used by any of the revered saints in classical saint literature. That subconscious realisation led me to write one,” shares Kale. Eventually becoming the centrepiece of his musical journey, “one early morning in San Francisco, the song began to flow, and it has stayed with me ever since.” he adds.

The essence of the song lies in its spiritual message. Traditionally, thousands of devotees embark on the wari pilgrimage to seek the blessings of Lord Panduranga during Ashadi Ekadashi. Kale believes that music has the power to transcend physical limitations. “Not everyone can undertake the pilgrimage,” he reflects. “But music has wings. It allows people to embark on a spiritual journey from wherever they are. To me, ‘Abhangwari’ represents a musical pilgrimage… a journey of the soul.”

The music of the song is a powerful fusion of soulful Indian ragas and modern electronic textures, arranged by talented music producer-arranger Sameer Mhatre and mixed and mastered by award-winning sound engineer Vijay Dayal of Yash Raj Studios. This is the first marathi abhang to be mixed in immersive Dolby Atmos, offering a rich, multidimensional listening experience that brings its devotional energy to life.

The music video of the song has been shot in Bhor near Pune, directed by acclaimed cinematographer and filmmaker Mahesh Limaye. Shot at a location called One Tree Hill, where the lone Audumbar tree, considered sacred in the Tatva Sampradaya, stands tall, the visuals mirror the serenity and depth of the composition. True to the song’s sense of awakening and celebration, the team began filming at sunrise. “We reached the location by sunrise, and there was a special energy in the air,” Kale recalls. One particularly memorable moment came when the ace vocalist found himself singing the song to an unexpected audience… a golden retriever named Simba! “I love animals, and Simba was the first listener of the song that day. There was a beautiful synchronicity in that moment.”

Mahesh Kale performed to a packed house, leaving the audience wanting more, with a soulful lineup of Abhangs and devotional pieces including Jai Jai Ram Krishna Hari, Bolava Vitthal, Lahanpan Dega Deva, Atami Ananya Yethe Adhikari, Abir Gulal, Sukhachi Sukha Chandrabhane, Sakha Panduranga, among many others.

After having received a thunderous response across Europe, the US, and Canada, where Mahesh Kale recently completed touring with his concert series, also titled ‘Abhangwari’, in over 30 cities across 7 countries, he is now bringing the concert series to audiences across India. The India leg of the tour is set to continue the momentum with performances lined up in Mumbai, Pune, Nagpur, Delhi, Kolkata, Indore, Chennai, and Bengaluru.

The Abhangwari concert was graced by notable guests, including renowned cricket commentator Harsha Bhogle and his wife Anita, as well as actor Subodh Bhave, who served as the compere for the show. Kale’s wife, Purva Gujar Kale was also in attendance at the do.

Kale expressed, “As we begin our Abhangwari concert series, many warkaris (devotees) have started their pilgrimage towards Pandharpur, aiming to arrive there by the 17th. A grand celebration takes place there. Our concert is a heartfelt effort to recreate this divine atmosphere and particularly for those unable to travel to Pandharpur.”

Reminiscing his bond with Mahesh Kale, Harsha Bhogle averred, “I first heard about Mahesh Kale from my brother-in-law, as Mahesh knew him very well. That’s when I started listening to him, and eventually, we got to know each other. Once, I asked him if he could surprise my mother-in-law and my wife, as they were huge admirers of his music… I messaged him asking if he could sing for them over the phone, and he actually called them and sang! I found that to be a really thoughtful gesture.”

The concert’s theme created a unique ‘wari’ pilgrimage atmosphere, adding to the evening’s spiritual mood. Each member of the audience donned a tilak on their forehead and wore traditional Maharashtrian topis, immersing them fully in the devotional experience. This thoughtfully-curated ambience left an indelible impression on all attendees, making ‘Abhangwari’ a truly memorable and spiritually uplifting experience for one and all. “Our attempt is to go beyond the confines of classical and semi-classical performances, creating a more engaging experience so that the audience comes closer to the art form” shared Kale.

Following his enchanting performance in Mumbai, Kale will now be traveling to Pune, Akkalkot, Chennai, Bangalore, and Hyderabad to bring ‘Abhangwari’ to audiences in these cities.
