Actor and producer Vikas Kumar enjoyed interacting with participants in the master class and showed enthusiasm for participating in similar events in the future.

Art critic Vinay Kumar highlighted the festival’s role in fostering an interest in serious films among the local audience. A painting exhibition by Canvas added an artistic touch to the festival. Usually when children become famous, the famous parents are known as their parents. Rarely it happens that despite a child attaining stardom the star father still retains his identity. Take the case of #ShaktiKapoor and #ShraddhaKapoor. Shakti Kapoor has been a huge star and now his daughter is a young superstar. But Shraddha, most of the time is referred to as Shakti Kapoor’s daughter and not vice versa. And she takes pride in that. Shakti Kapoor was destined to become an actor. Hailing from a business family from New Delhi, Sunil Kapoor (Shakti Kapoor’s real Name) was reluctant to join the family business. He graduated from #KiroriMalCollege which boasts of names like #AmitabhBachchan, #DineshThakur (who died in 2012), #SatishKaushik (who expired just a few days ago) in it’s students list. Getting selected to #FTII (Films & Television Institute of India) was no less than a miracle. As he never was interested in a 9 to 5 job, he grabbed that God sent opportunity. And the rest is history because Shakti Kapoor has done more than ‘700’ films and is still going strong. He has also worked in #Malayalam, #Bengali, #Oriya, #Nepali, #Telugu, #Kannada, #Assamese and #Bangladeshi films. Shakti Kapoor has always avoided groupism in the film industry and believed in hard work. He never behaves churlishly. He has always been passionate about his work and maybe because of that he worked with #MithunChakraborty in 100 films and with #Jeetendra in more than 70 films. In earlier era film’s Hero-Heroine jodi used to be talking point but when Shakti Kapoor and #KaderKhan jodi got famous they got discussed even more. He has done more than 100 films with Kader Khan. Shakti Kapoor and #Govinda’s jodi too was audience’s favourite. They worked together in almost 50 films. Their last film together was Rangeela Raja which was produced and directed by #PahlajNihalani which released a year before pandemic which circumvented quite a few obstacles. Shraddha Kapoor’s latest outing ‘Tu Jhooti Main Makkar’ has been doing good business at the box office.

What are your views on Shraddha’s ‘Tu Jhooti Main Makkar’ doing good business?
It definitely is a great feeling. It’s a good news for the film industry because it has been going through crisis and not many films are doing good business. Earlier Shahrukh Khan’s ‘Pathaan’ opened the floodgates and now ‘Tu Jhooti Main Makkar’ is getting audiences back to theatres. Though it’s a double celebration for me because it’s my daughter Shraddha’s film and secondly I am part of this beautiful industry, so I am bound to be extra happy. I am proud of my daughter and congratulate the makers, cast and crew. I hope the film does stupendous business.

What makes the film tick with audiences?
I think that you ought to make a good film. These days more thrust is given to the script. The star system is getting faded and the viewers have become ruthless. Any mediocre stuff won’t stick today with the audience. They have become very choosy now. In our times their used to be 4-5 heroes and 4-5 heroines and the entire industry used to function around them. But now the times have changed. Now the competition is huge. With the advent of television and OTT platforms audiences have huge choices to get entertained. They are exposed to everything around the world and in that case if we keep on dishing out the old stuff, they’ll not support you.

You were one of the most good looking villains Hindi film industry had…
I am still a good looking guy…(laughs)

Yes, of course, but did you not try to become a ‘Hero’ after attaining stardom?
In those days, all actors used to be a victim of typecasting. Most of them were not accepted in other roles by the then audience. Vinod Khanna and Shatrughan Sinha were established villains. They successfully transitioned to protagonist roles. I too was keen on playing protagonist in films. And I did a film as a Hero. It was ‘Zakhmi Insaan’. But unfortunately it bombed. The producer and the distributor became seriously ‘Zakhmi’. (Laughs) Then I consoled myself and started doing what I was good at, villain roles. In fact, later I realised that there’s more scope for villain’s roles.

You shifted gear and turned to comedic roles…..
Yes, I was offered Satte Pe Satta (remake of Seven Brides for Seven Brothers) by Romu Sippy and I am happy that I did that film. I think it is being remade once again. But it definitely changed the course of my career. It opened other doors for me. Many filmmakers realised that I have potential to do comic roles. Mind you, comedy is the most difficult genre. Judwaa, Bol Radha Bol, Taqdeerwala, Andaz Apna Apna, Hero Hindustani, Coolie No 1, Gunda, Hungama, Chaalbaaz, there are so many of them in which I did comedic roles. Raja Babu was the icing on the cake. I received Filmfare’s Best Actor in a Comic Role award and it has very special place in my life. It so happened that, that year my mother wanted to accompany me to the Filmfare awards show. I was nominated for Raja Babu and I was continuously praying to God that I should win for the sake of my mother. She has been my support system right from the time I had decided to go to FTII. It was her dream to see her son receiving an award in front of her eyes. I profusely prayed to God and that trophy was bestowed on me that year.

Tell us about how you met Shivangi ma’am and how things got furthered….
We met, we fell in love and we got married with everybody’s blessings. It’s as simple as that. And of course we have two beautiful children. Frankly I do not talk about it.

Shraddha calls you Bapu. Anything specific on that?
She has been calling me Bapu since childhood. I do not remember anything connected to it.

You and Shraddha made a reel on ‘Thumka’, something about it….
I really loved the ‘Thumka’ song from Shraddha’s ‘Tu Jhooti Main Makkar’ and we decided to make a reel on that. I enjoy dancing and it was an impromptu dance. It went viral and has more than 3 million views.

Shraddha told me that there were 20 retakes and all were because of her and you did not complain once…
See, to get a good shot I have given 50 retakes also. So it’s a question of end product being good. I don’t agree with Shraddha that all the retakes were because of her mistake. I feel that it was a collective effort and we had fun doing it.

OTT is getting prominence these days. Have you been part of that platform?
Yes of course. A lot good stuff is being made on OTT. I did Bravehearts – The Untold Stories of Heroes. This anthology celebrates the stories of unsung heroes and their journey. I was paired with Suchitra Krishnamoorthi. I also did Parchhayee: Ghost Stories by Ruskin Bond which was premiered on the Zee5 platform. I was part of the Ashley Ka Intezar episode. At the moment I have three scripts with me, which I am going through. And If I like my role I’ll definitely do it.

Your life has been quite interesting. Any plans to write a memoir or making a biopic?
No. No. If I want to write a biography, I’ll definitely come to you. But I haven’t given a thought for biopic. I am content with my life. Mumbai has given me ‘star ki life and a beautiful wife’.

#HariharanAnanthaSubramani is prominently known as a #GhazalSinger, He has 30 gazal albums to his credit, but his #Bhajans and film songs too are very popular. He has touched many lives in over four decades of his career. Additionally he is into fusion music which makes him a versatile singer. In assosiation with musician Leslie Lewis he formed a two member band, Colonial Cousins. The album had two major hit singles, ‘#Krishna’ and ‘#SaNiDhaPa’ (Never Know the Reason) which repeatedly played on #Music channels. Now they have parted ways. He is an established ghazal singer and one of the pioneers of Indian fusion music. #Hariharan has been equally popular with older as well as younger listeners as he keeps experimenting about his singing. Moreover he has sung in multiple languages, which include #Tamil, #Hindi, #Telugu, #Malayalam, #Kannada, #Sinhala, #Bhojpuri, #Bengali, #Odia and #Marathi. There are more than 15000 songs to his credit and that says a lot about his talent and versatility. Recently he released a new Ghazal titled, ‘#Dooriyan….’ and it proves that a good artist can never be away from music. Not that Hariharan ever took a break and at the age of 67 too his voice is loved by the music lovers. He can encapsulate any genre in singing with ease. ‘#PadmaShri’ Hariharan interacted with our Sr Editor Keerti Kadam. Excerpts…

Your new Ghazal ‘Dooriyan…’ is out now. What’s your views on it?
Ghazal is my favourite singing genre. Talking about Dooriyan it’s a well crafted song. It’s a cross-country collaboration that depict emotions of a heartbroken person in love. I was approached to sing it by Kailash Gandharv, a music composer from Ujjain. He sent me the composition. I suggested a few changes. Then the lyrics by Madan Pal though very good but were too many. There were too many stanzas. So I and my co-singer Sadhana Jejurikar decided on which stanzas to keep and which each one of us to recite. My son Akshay has produced this gazal and while he professionally managed the arrangements and dubbing etc, has put in his inputs which will help the song to reach out to the younger generation. Instead of 4 by 4, (each measure contain four quarter note beats) he has recorded it in 7 by 8. The soundscape by him is modern which sounds like today’s song. He does have musical instinct which helped the song to pan out beautifully. I and Sadhana dubbed it and now it’s in front of you and hopefully everyone will like it.

Hariharan, in his early career, has cut several successful Ghazal albums, writing most of the scores himself. One of Hariharan’s first ghazal albums was ‘Aabshar-e-Ghazal’ with legendary Asha Bhosle which went gold in sales. His another popular Ghazal album was Gulfam which not only hit double platinum in sales but also fetched Hariharan the Diva Award for the Best Album of the Year in 1995. The other major ghazal albums by him are Hazir, Jashn, Halka Nasha, Paigham, Kaash and Lahore Ke Rang Hari Ke Sang. Hariharan has also worked with tabla maestro Zakir Hussain on his album Hazir. He has A R Rahman as a fan and both, for the first time, worked together for ‘Roja’ for a Tamil song ‘Thamizha Thamizha’.

Given the pop culture ruling charts, do you think the youngsters like to listen to Ghazals?
Of course. I strongly believe that even youngsters are interested in Ghazals. I was in Delhi for a concert just a few months back and there was a crowd of around 15000 people which included 10000 youngsters. Even in my Bhopal Ghazal concert there were majority of younger audience in 5-6 thousand crowd. In Indore concert too similar thing was observed. So I know for sure that plenty of youths follow ghazal and it’s a good sign for this genre. In Mumbai’s NCPA auditorium too there are 2000 people where good percentage of youngsters are present. Ghazals were popular earlier and it’s popular even today despite onslaught of other popular songs. As long as there is love in the world, and for that matter break up too, Ghazal will exist.

But, I think that today’s music is short lived. Most of the songs which are considered popular are forgotten in no time. Today’s songs are made popular with Hammering. If a song is played for 10000 times, it obviously is going to get noticed. But that’s not Real popularity. The songs are forcefully thrown down the throat of the listeners. I believe in versatility. I am eager to learn new points of views. I am approached by new composers, some of them are from rural areas too. I love folk music. I tell them that I am in your hands for the next three hours and my slate is clean now. Treat me like your student. I believe in following the composers’ vision because they know the idea behind it. Frankly I befriend them so that they are not in awe to work with me. I believe in the end product being good. I tell them that it’s up to you to make me sing the way you have visualised the song. I have learnt this from great singers like Lata Mangeshkar, Asha Bhosle etc who used to surrender before the composer’s vision and sing as per their requirements. In the process you drive away monotony.

Hariharan and late Gulshan Kumar recorded Hanuman Chalisa under the T-Series label which crossed three billion views mark on YouTube. It’s the first first devotional song in the world to do so.

How do you feel for this feat?
Gulshan Kumar was very close to me. The rendition of Hanuman Chalisa was very dear to me and him. I think Hanumanji is more popular (laughs). Gulshan bhai used to urge me to sing more devotional songs and bhajans. A lot of people across country tell me that Sir, we listen to your Hanuman Chalisa everyday. Again it’s considered auspicious as it is played at the inaugural events too.

What difference do you find in yesteryear and today’s songs?
Today, octave has become very high. Whatever the emotion, love, pain or anger, the song is sung at high pitch. I fail to understand the reason behind it. Maybe when a song is recorded at high octave, the instruments too are played at high octave, resultantly the vibrations are very high. And everything put together the song sounds catchy. I wonder why today’s singers sing in high octave? Moreover most of the songs have doctored voices.

Taking this further, do you think whether it’s justifiable for film stars to sing?
I personally can not comment on that. I have just acted in a Malayalam film (smiles). But in earlier times there used to be singing stars. You were offered acting assignment only if you knew singing. But in the changed scenario I think it’s okay for a film star to sing a song here and there. Some actors have passion for singing and if they are good at it, then why not? See, stars are extremely popular and even if they sing not that brightly, their fans will forgive them. If the song suits the situation and his or her voice supports that situation, then the star is justified. Also some sing for fun, so it is okay if film stars try to sing in films or otherwise. But I think film music is not music per say. It is for media, i.e. Films.

At the start of his career, Hariharan did the concert circuit and also performed on TV. He sang for a number of TV serials like Junoon. He is a trusted singer for A R Rehman because both collaborated for many films, including Muthu, Minsara Kanavu, Jeans, Indian, Iruvar, Guru, Enthiran, Sivaji to name a few. Apart from outstanding singer Hariharan is a composer too and have composed for a polish film ‘No Means No’. Hariharan is the recipient of the coveted National Award, twice. He won it for a the song ‘Mere Dushman Mere Bhai’ from ‘Border’ and second one was the song, ‘Jiv Rangla’ from the marathi film ‘Jogwa’.

After their star studded wedding reception last month, actors Richa Chadha and Ali Fazal celebrated by taking their first production, ‘Girls Will Be Girls’, on the floors in Uttarakhand. The film which is being directed by debutante Shuchi Talati has already been in the news for the various prestigious grants it has received this past year.

The story is set in a boarding school in a small town in the Himalayan foothills and follows a 16 year old Mira, whose rebellious coming of age is hijacked by her mother who never got to come of age. Earlier this year, the film won the Arte Kino prize and the VFF Talent Highlights Award at the Berlinale Co-Production Market. Pushing Buttons Studio had also conducted a free lighting workshop called UnderCurrent for women who wish to become gaffers in the industry in June 2022.

Multi-award winning Malayalam actress Kani Kusruti has been roped into play the lead role. She has won the prestigious Kerala State award, Filmfare award, the Rome Prisma Award and the BRICS international awards in the past and is a name to reckon in the world of independent cinema. The film will also mark the debut and launch of two new young actors, Preeti Panigrahi and Kesav Binoy Kiron who will be essaying the lead roles alongside Kani.

Shuchi Talati, director of the film, said, “I am overwhelmed by the process naturally and am very excited to make my first film. I feel confident about the script since I received validation due to the numerous grants our project has received. I hope I can live up to expectations.
