“You occasionally decline to take up a job because of money concerns. It makes no difference whether you’re a good actor or not. They’re okay with having anyone in that budget. And a large number of actors have agreed to work on the film on a tight budget. So it’s not like they’re looking for a specific star or a specific budget. They may be less deserving, but with a large following and a large budget, they may be cast. So whoever is trending and has a large number of followers is being cast, not on the basis of their merit or skill, not even on experience. Whatever industry you choose, you will progressively grow. But in this industry, it makes no difference how much experience you have. I’ve noticed a lot of senior artists who aren’t getting work because they aren’t engaged on social media. Actors who are just active on social media are getting opportunities instead of them. So social media now rules everything. It’s a harsh reality,” she says.

Finding the right work opportunity is a task, she says, adding, “If you are famous on social media, you may become an actress since lip sync and dancing make you famous nowadays. You can be an actor if you have a large number of followers, in millions. You’ll have a chance whether you’re an excellent or an awful actress. Clearly, competition has intensified. And I’m not sure which work is better; OTT, TV or Film. I come from a middle-class background, I can’t just remain at home and wait for an opportunity to come my way. Struggle for one to two years before breaking into OTT. Because you work all month, you can’t do OTT while doing TV. You don’t have much time, and it’s not possible for us to manage it. So, you either have to wait or say no to TV. It is undeniably challenging.”

Many times, people who are not that good at their jobs, get projects, she says, adding, “I see a lot of underserved individuals who were famous and did fantastic jobs, but in terms of acting, they’re not good and are below average, yet their shows are still popular. And no one will even mention the acting. Only through appearing on hit shows or reality shows do their fan bases grow and they become famous. We are dissatisfied only when a deserving person is denied an opportunity to work. Call it fate or whatever you want, but I usually consider it as such. So it’s important to be at the right place at the right moment. You cannot alter things, but you can push yourself to improve and work hard. We don’t have a choice. I cannot openly proclaim that this individual is undeserving and make a scene in order to get famous since we have seen people become famous as a result of bad trolling. So, I’m not going to do it. So, I’m dealing with it the way I am. I’m doing excellent work, I’m happy with what I’m getting, and I want the public to continue to love me. Apart from that, it’s up to fate. I’m looking forward to my hard work.”

In a candid conversation, Megha talks about her experience of adopting dogs and how she continues to care for stray dogs.

Talking about her strong bond with dogs, Megha Chakraborty said “I share a profound connection with dogs, it is amazing how we adore and understand each other. I have four dogs back home in Kolkata and I miss them all a lot. Usually, when I am home, I ensure to spend all my time with them and my family. We enjoy going for long drives and playing in the outdoors.”

Sharing about her experience while adopting, Megha Chakraborty said “Whenever I head out, I ensure to carry biscuits along with me so that I could feed the strays. I also ensure to donate to animal shelters from time to time. In 2014, when I had first arrived in Mumbai, I had adopted an injured dog from the streets. Initially, it was difficult for me to look after a pet, but I tried my level best to give her a good life. Today she lives a healthy life with my family back home in Kolkata.”

Megha Chakraborty further mentioned “At the moment, I would love to adopt a pet, but I have been controlling my emotions as I will not be able to give it as much time as it deserves. I’d like to advise my fans to always adopt pets instead of buying them. If you can take care of them then only it is advisable to adopt them. It is a big responsibility as they are not here for anyone’s entertainment. They are like little children; they need your care at all times.”

Shubhashish Jha aka Jijaji from Jijaji Chhat Parr Koii Hai: “My mother is a very strong-willed person and I have imbibed her sense of discipline and self-belief. Every year on Mother’s Day, I would usually send her flowers, a cake, or any gift that I feel would bring a smile on her face and she would enjoy. She has always guided me and the best advice that I have received from her is to stay grounded and composed irrespective of the changes that might occur in life and I often reflect upon this. One of my fondest memories with her dates back to the time when I used to accompany her to a Stationery shop on Sunday mornings and those trips were fascinating and fun-filled because my mother would buy me stationery items, some toys and goodies. She rarely asks for anything, that’s why during our conversations I take note of things that she might mention which could be of her interest. At times if I get her a particular gadget, I make sure I get things set up and help her understand how to use it. Being not so tech-savvy, she is often reluctant to learn, and I find this very cute. This year we’ll need to celebrate Mother’s Day in innovative ways and I’m working on making a special montage video for her.”

Sayantani Ghosh aka Daljeet Bagga from Tera Yaar Hoon Main: “Since I was a little girl, my mother has always taught me a sense of independence, which has made me a very independent and strong woman of today’s time. I don’t believe in celebrating any occasion for a day, other than birthdays. I believe in making people feel special throughout the year by doing little-little things for them and stay connected. My mother was my first best friend while growing up and is still my Ludo partner. She is very forgiving and always tends to look at the brighter side of things, and the credit for my compassionate nature goes to her. I usually send her a bouquet or try my hands at cooking a meal for her to make her feel special. This year, we won’t be meeting, so I plan to send her a cake and flowers and wishes with lots of love and good health.”

Yukti Kapoor aka Karishma Singh from Maddam Sir: “I believe every child is close to their mother, especially girls. My mother is a beautician by profession, and I have learnt a lot from her. The best advice that I have received from my mother is that we are in this world for a short time, and we should decide ourselves to spend it happily or by being sad. She always forgives everyone quickly, and I have imbibed this quality from her. Since childhood, I have seen her working and handling family simultaneously with a smile on her face. So, I have learned that we should face life fearlessly and strongly, and with a wide smile irrespective of the situation. She is my best friend and has always advised me to live in the moment and do what makes my heart happy. One of my favourite childhood memories is that she made me wear boy’s clothes and cut my hair short, even though I always wanted to be dressed up as a girl. Usually, I make sure to cook a nice meal for her and she is also very fond of gold jewellery, so I keep gifting her that along with cake and flowers. She also likes to decorate the house, so for interiors too, I have planned to give her a dream catcher.”

I strongly feel we should celebrate Mother’s Day every day and make her feel special daily. My mother has always advised me to be very respectful towards elders and be honest with work. She has instilled in me the idea of standing up against any injustice happening around, especially with animals. She has made countless sacrifices, and I can’t thank her enough for it. My fondest memory goes back to the days of winters when she would lend her warm slippers while waking me up so that I don’t have to put my feet on cold flooring. I got her kitchen and house renovated recently, and she was delighted. My mother runs a small NGO back in Kolkata and very actively looks after and takes care of the strays.”

Being a part of the show and portraying this character is an honour for me and it has also taught me the skills of a hair dresser. If I had a saloon in real life, I would like to give a haircut to Amitabh Bachchan because just like him, his hair style is iconic and trend-setter. It has not changed since the day he had entered Indian cinemas. Also, I would like to give a haircut to Ranveer Singh as he keeps experimenting with his looks, so I would surely try my skills on his hair and come up with something new and funky for him.”

On the other hand Megha Chakraborty aka Garima would like to style a very dear family member first. She said, “While getting into the character of Garima, the first requirement was to learn the art of hair dressing. After practicing for months, I have got a good grasp on this and my first real life model has to be my brother because he needs a good haircut and who better than his sister can do it for him. If I ever get an opportunity to style a celebrity, it would have to be Karthik Aaryan for sure. Would love to give him a great haircut.”
