“Rangoli is upfront and rowdy. She’s “chawl ki gundi”, and at the same time she loves her kids a lot. She runs a business where she makes her kids steal because according to her the rich people take from the poor people. So if the poor people steal from the rich then that is not actually stealing, but it’s like taking what belongs to them. Rangoli is a vibrant and versatile character. She’s a mother of six, her intentions for them are pure but her style of upbringing is different. She might be strict at times but if no one can say anything to her kids,” she describes her character.

Monika liked everything about the character, be it the language Rangoli speaks, or the way she behaves. There are reasons why she agreed to do the part. “Mouthing the dialogues is tough but it’s interesting. I also like Rangoli’s attitude, the way she looks at the world or lives her life. This character is different from anything that I’ve done so far,” she adds. When it comes to relating with Rangoli, Monika shares that they are extremely opposite of one another. “That’s why it’s both challenging and interesting. When you get a chance to play something like this, something out-of-the-box, it often gets the best out of you,” explains the actor, who bonds well with Chikoo (Vaishnavi Prajapat) and Himanshu (Milind Joshi) on the set. In fact, Himanshu is one of her closest friends in the industry. Talking about her collaboration with the producers, Monika says, “Working with Herumb sir and Nilanjana has always been a great pleasure. When it comes to creativity or trying something new, they are the people who can do it. They do not write monotonous characters, their stories are interesting and I want to be a part of their next show also. They are like two pillars of the show. We know they will take care of all of us.”

Content is king. “I think the story has to be rich, believable and logical enough to succeed. If the story is not strong we will also not enjoy doing it, neither will the audience be able to connect with it. Chikoo… is the story of a kid who struggles hard to find her mother and even when she does she is unable to reveal her true identity. So it’s a very beautiful story,” she adds. The pandemic has affected the way we work. “It has made things very different. Every day we have our check-up, covid test… so every time in our mind it’s always like hope everything is fine, we have to get things done quickly, there is no room for any error, etc. The situation is difficult, but it’s much better now,” she ends.

Talking about beauty standards in the industry, Monika says, “It is very unfortunate to think that being fair and thin is the definition of beauty. I don’t believe in this. But this is the sad reality of our society. They have defined beauty in one sentence – you are beautiful if you are thin, tall and fair, which according to me is not true. For me, beauty is from the inside and it depends on how good you are in person. I have heard people not even being entertained to enter the auditions because they don’t ‘fit’ the role. And I think not just in the industry, this notion has a major impact on society as well. But with people now getting aware and educated, the mindsets are changing and we can also see that in the shows that are now being produced. I hope we keep going ahead in the right direction.”

She also added, “With times and people changing, I think we need to see more shows where we show the females moving to another city and living the life she dreamt of independently. We have seen enough of ‘bichari bahu’ roles and it is time for us to show a new perspective. We are in 2021! I really hope we keep moving away from the stereotypes.”

Do you celebrate by bringing a Ganpati idol at home? How lavish do you go with your celebrations in terms of decor or sweets ?
Yes, I do bring an idol of Lord Ganesh at my house every year during Ganesh Chaturthi and I usually keep Bappa for 7 days. This is going to be my 11th year celebrating Ganesh Chaturthi at home. I am not sure if it can be termed lavish, but every year I introduce a very colourful and vibrant theme to welcome Bappa whenever he comes. I try my level best to decorate the mandap as beautifully as I can.

A special dish or thing you create on this festival ?
When it comes to making the Bhog and the Laddus, my mother handles it all and very effortlessly and makes a few variants of Ladoos and other mithai along with Chole Kulche and other Ganpati special food items. Almost every cuisine a Delhiite can dream of, my mother makes it all for Ganpati Bappa around this time of the year. Also, like every year, all excess food made for the festivities will be donated to people in need. The special dish that my mom makes which is served to Bappa is Laddoo and Till Ki Barfi along with Chole Bhature.

Fondest memories of this festival ?
I have way too many fond memories around this festival. Every year since the first time I brought Bappa home, several family members and friends would come over for Darshan and they have been continuously visiting us over the last 11 years to take part in the festivities with us. I am extremely grateful that my friendships with them have remained intact over the years, after all this festival is all about getting together with family and old friends and making new ones too.

Since the celebrations this year are a little subdued, what are you going to miss the most ?
Since a global pandemic is hovering over us during this season of festivities and the enthusiasm is much lower compared to other years, we have also kept the spirit and grandeur of the celebration a little mellow this year. We’re celebrating the festival as modestly as we can but what I’m going to miss the most is the Visarjan part because that is when everyone has the most amount of fun. We all look forward to it because the environment is so full of warmth and energy, it is bound to give anyone that kick to join in on all the fun. The energy is unbelievable and I’m going to miss immersing Bappa in our own traditional way

Any special things for Ganesh Chaturthi ?
My Ganesh Chaturthi plans mostly includes doing a Ghar ki Puja. We have made a special to whosoever comes at our door during this season of festivities to not bring any flowers or any eatables and instead bring stationary that we could distribute amongst the less fortunate children who need it the most. This is a small-scale initiative that I have taken during Ganesh Chaturthi to give back to the world and I would gladly do it at any given time of the year whenever I have an opportunity to. I feel it’s an extremely noble deed because children who cannot afford books and stationery need our help to build a future.
