“To be, or not to be…”

The grand and thunderous stage of Indian cinema has lost one of its undisputed emperors. With the passing of Vishwanath, popularly known as “Nana” Patekar at the age of 75, a towering figure of performance art has left us, creating a silence so profound that no monologue could ever truly fill it.

Much like the tragic and soul-shattering protagonist of his timeless masterpiece Natsamrat, Nana lived, breathed, and poured his raw, unfiltered soul into every character he portrayed. He gave Indian cinema and culture a voice that was fiercely honest, uncompromising and deeply human—a voice that touched audiences and shook them to their very core.

His journey to greatness was built on sheer grit and determination. Long before his face appeared on giant billboards across the country, he was a young man in Mumbai painting road markings and film posters under the scorching sun simply to earn enough for a meal, while devoting his nights to Marathi theatre. When he entered cinema, he shattered conventional notions of what a superstar was expected to be. He had no interest in designer clothes, artificial charm or superficial glamour. Nana brought truth to the screen. He commanded it with razor-sharp dialogue delivery, sudden and powerful silences, and an emotional intensity that was unmistakably his own.

His versatility knew no bounds. He gave Indian cinema one of its most chilling and groundbreaking villainous performances as the volatile and paranoid crime lord Anna Seth in Parinda, forever changing the way underworld figures and morally complex characters were portrayed. He brought fierce patriotism to life as Pratap in Krantiveer and underwent rigorous military training alongside soldiers for Prahaar, which he also directed and starred in.

Yet, he could effortlessly switch gears and win our hearts in beloved Marathi classics. Whether it was the magical, forest-dwelling Chokhya in Pak Pak Pakaak, or his remarkable performances in films such as Sinhasan, Astitva and Deool, Nana repeatedly demonstrated that he was not merely an actor but a master of the craft.

And then came his unforgettable turn as Uday Shetty in Welcome. It was a performance so iconic and so deeply loved across generations that millions of film lovers cannot imagine Majnu without Uday Shetty. Nana transformed a comic character into a piece of pop-culture history.

Yet, the line between life and art blurred into something far more profound when he stepped into the role of Dr. Prakash Baba Amte in Dr. Prakash Baba Amte: The Real Hero. Portraying the son of legendary social reformer Baba Amte was not merely an acting assignment for Nana—it was a calling. He did not simply portray the spirit of selflessness on screen; he embraced its essence in his own life.

Despite decades of immense fame, National Awards and widespread admiration, Nana remained remarkably simple and grounded. He stayed away from the glitz, glamour and extravagant parties associated with stardom. He lived modestly, ate simple food and kept his heart open to anyone in need.

His soul always belonged to the common man, particularly the farmers of India. When severe droughts devastated rural Maharashtra, Nana did not limit himself to expressing sympathy from a distance. Alongside Makarand Anaspure, he co-founded the Naam Foundation and personally reached out to drought-stricken villages, sat with grieving farming families, helped create water reservoirs and devoted his own resources, time and energy to improving countless lives. He lived like the real-life heroes he portrayed—a man of the soil, committed to the welfare of those who depended on it.

Nana Patekar lived, spoke, loved and served entirely on his own terms. He was a master of his craft, a champion of the forgotten and a true artist who demonstrated that genuine greatness lies in humility, courage and an unconditional concern for fellow human beings.

The final curtain may have fallen on his mortal journey, but his immortal voice, unforgettable characters, extraordinary body of work and compassionate spirit will live on in our hearts forever.

Rest in peace, Natsamrat.
Om Shanti.

Speaking on the occasion, Nitin Gadkari said, “I am here today to salute the work of #NanaPatekar and #MakarandAnaspure. If each of us draws inspiration from their efforts and takes the initiative to contribute socially, this movement can certainly bring change in society and the nation. Our names must be among those who turn challenges into opportunities. True social work does not need political publicity; what it needs is willpower. ‘Naam’ has shown this through its dedicated work.”

He further added, “Rather than being hands that only give, we must be hands that truly help. The more we focus on skill development, the stronger our progress will be. Every socially sensitive individual must step forward and contribute in their own way.”

Uday Samant praised the organization, saying, “The work of ‘Naam’ itself is proof of its success. I have always tried to ensure such organizations receive recognition everywhere. Through government programs and schemes, we have associated ‘Naam Foundation’ and witnessed many positive outcomes, of which I am a direct witness.”

While alternate endings have occasionally surfaced in film history, they remain rare — and rarely attempted on a global scale. But never before has a mainstream Hindi comedy that too a murder mystery has ever embraced such narrative audacity — and certainly not one backed by a marquee franchise with such mass appeal.

Speaking on it Filmmaker Sajid Nadiadwala shared, “With Housefull 5, we wanted to take a bold creative swing that hasn’t been done before internationally for any thriller film. The idea of having multiple endings, multiple experiences has been with me for 30 years. Since, i wanted to make Housefull 5 a thriller comedy, there couldn’t have been a better way to execute my idea of having multiple endings than this.”

He adds, “It felt right to do something radical as we celebrate 75 years of Nadiadwala Grandson in the industry. Housefull is India’s biggest comedy franchise and for the fifth instalment, we had to push the boundaries of what comedy can be. The idea of different endings came from a simple question: why should the audience always have just one version of the truth in a thriller? With Housefull 5, we’ve built a film that plays with form while staying completely rooted in entertainment. It’s a killer comedy, literally, with twists that change depending on where you’re watching it. and I’m proud we’re doing it under the banner of Nadiadwala Grandson as we mark 75 years in the business. Our legacy has always been about embracing scale, stars, and giving audiences newer experiences and Housefull 5 takes all it to another level.”

He further adds, “It’s a natural extension of the theatrical experience: creating intrigue, rewatch value, and a sense of discovery. In a world of spoilers and algorithms, we’re bringing back that element of surprise. And that’s where the fun begins.”

With Housefull 5, Nadiadwala signals a new level of creative confidence: one that treats the audience not just as spectators, but as part of the storytelling experience. It’s a format that sparks conversation, rewards curiosity, and invites repeat viewing — all without sacrificing the heart of the franchise’s chaotic, big-hearted humour.

In a theatrical climate hungry for novelty, this move sets a precedent. It challenges conventional wisdom that one story must end one way — and reminds us that even in the most commercial of genres, there’s room for reinvention.

By engineering this dual-ending release, Nadiadwala is tapping into modern audience psychology where viewers crave personalization, alternate story arcs, and immersive fandom. This move maximizes intrigue while preserving the theatrical format’s value in an age of streaming convenience. Sajid Nadiadwala has also done the story and screenplay for Housefull 5.

For distributors, the format creates both opportunities and challenges. Sanjay Chatar of Pen Marudhar describes it as adding “an entirely new layer of interactivity to the theatrical experience,” requiring close collaboration with exhibitors to ensure “optimal programming, audience flow, and discoverability across locations.”

“We’re excited to support the launch of Housefull 5 with this groundbreaking multi-ending format—the first time such a release strategy has been attempted at scale in Indian cinema. Each of our locations will screen both versions of the film, programmed either across different screens or staggered showtimes. This gives moviegoers more choice, more engagement, and more reason to return to the theatre.” Kamal Gianchandani – Chief Business planning & Strategy – PVR INOX

It’s the first time a mainstream Bollywood has done something differently with the climax and it’s a much appreciated experience for the viewers.

Leading the charge is king of comedy himself, #AkshayKumar, joined by returning favourites and some new faces including #RiteishDeshmukh, #AbhishekABachchan, #JacquelineFernandez, #SonamBajwa, #NargisFakhri, #SanjayDutt, #JackieShroff, #NanaPatekar, #ChitrangadaSingh, #FardeenKhan, #ChunkyPandey, #JohnnyLever, #ShreyasTalpade, #DinoMorea, #Ranjeet, #SoundaryaSharma, #NikitinDheer, and #AkashdeepSabir.
