‘Awargi’ is a romantic number that beautifully captures the essence of the relationship between the characters played by Jennifer Winget and Karan Wahi in ‘Raisinghani vs Raisinghani,’ one of the most successful web series on Sony LIV. The series portrays the complex and evolving relationship between Anushka (Jennifer Winget) and Virat (Karan Wahi), who navigate their on-again, off-again romance. As Virat decides to commit fully to Anushka, the series needed a song that would reflect this pivotal moment with a strong melody and meaningful lyrics.

Bhavna Sresth, the showrunner of the series, reached out to Nikhil with the vision of a soulful melody that would align seamlessly with the narrative. During a meeting at SoBo Films, Nikhil met Bhavna and Anuradha Tewari, the writer of the show, and presented several of his melodies. The team was particularly impressed with ‘Awargi,’ and Nikhil worked diligently to perfect the song, which features three antaras.

Given the mature nature of Karan Wahi’s character, the team sought a heroic voice to bring the song to life. Nikhil suggested a few names, and the team decided on Aditya Narayan. After sending a scratch version to Aditya’s mother, Deepa Narayan, Aditya himself reached out to confirm his participation.

Nikhil Kamath shared his experience, stating, “It was wonderful composing a song like ‘Awargi’ for ‘Raisinghani vs Raisinghani.’ The entire process, from understanding the characters’ journey to collaborating with the team, was incredibly fulfilling.”

Looking ahead, Nikhil Kamath is excited about his upcoming projects, including composing for a new feature film set to release later this year. Fans can look forward to more of his soulful melodies that continue to touch hearts and captivate audiences.

When talking about Nikhil’s experience on meeting the endearing Suniel Shetty, he said, “One thing about you which I should say is very, very endearing is the way you treat this 20 to 35 year age group, bracket guys and girls, I think, like, amongst the people, I know there’s Anil, there’s Shetty, there’s all these people who treat you as a friend and you’re able to be with them, hang out with them, and be amongst them, like you belong in that group, which I think is really hard. Yeah. So start from there and tell us a little bit about yourself.”

“I think for me, my journey you know, connects to all this and the youth is because I, I started off as an actor not believing that I was gonna get an opportunity the South Indian boy that doesn’t speak the language of course I spoke Hindi in school, but I managed to get through probably 40-45 out of 100 when it came to my diction was never very good because we spoke Tulu at home. I never spoke Hindi, not a word of hindi so when I got into the business of cinema, thanks to my martial arts background, I believed that I was going to be successful like probably a Mr. Bachchan would. But then when the results come out, you see success at the box office, but you have a critique, writing you have completely and say your wooden reality it is so hard. We don’t want to do take a step back and then decide you know what, the only way I can stay here is if I create an image for myself, what is my strength, action work on it. But there are a lot of others who are doing action to then. Do death defying stunts take that risk, let that family not know but go every morning to do action, believing that either you’re gonna come back with a broken bone or you’re not going to come back at all. It’s a tough job right? It’s a very tough job being an action hero.”

Reminiscing about the time he worked with the late composer-singer, Nikhil says, “I had composed a folk-based song called ‘Chatni Chatni’ for the film ‘Dunno Y2 Life Is A Moment”. When producer and lead actor Kapil Kaustubh Sharma heard the track, he told me Bappi da would be the best person to sing it. I reached out to Bappi da and he immediately agreed to sing the song. He was in America at that time and he recorded his vocals from there and sent it to me. His rendition was pitch-perfect! We used the portions sung by him in another single called ‘Kulfi Kulfi’ which was co-sung by Rekha Rao.”

Like any other composer of his generation, Nikhil was hugely inspired by Bappi Lahiri. He started studying the late composer’s music when he was in college and distinctively remembers buying an EP of the film ‘Chalte Chalte’ which had the iconic Kishore Kumar sung track “Chalte Chalte Mere Yeh Geet” composed by Lahiri.

“Bappi da was one of the most kind-hearted human beings I had come across. One of my favourite songs by him is ‘Pyaar Maanga Hai Tumhi Se’. He was one of the most versatile composers. Though the media often described him as the ‘disco king’, he had delivered great songs in every possible genre. ‘Saiyaan Bina Ghar Soona’, sung by Lata Mangeshkar ji and Bhupinder Singh ji, was a semi-classical number and one of his finest compositions”.

According to Nikhil, Bappi Lahiri has left behind a rich legacy of songs that will continue to inspire many generations for decades to come.

Nikhil Kamath says “I feel really proud and blessed that I was a part of such a memorable film like “Tum Bin”. It was an experience which I cherish from the bottom of my heart. There was so much trust , love and affection between all of us. Bhushan Kumar had complete trust and faith in our abilities and Anubhav Sinha was also in great spirits.”

He further added “The songs are still relevant and remembered today because they were composed with complete freedom given to the composers and unit. Bhushan Kumar trusted us and Faaiz Anwar. He was also new and gave us a free hand. We kept melody in all songs. In the long run good lyrics and melody works. We took great care to see that the orchestration suits the situations of the songs. Though we modernised the musical orchestration we used violins and all original instruments to highlight the songs. The songs were well picturised by Anubhav Sinha in Panavision colour. The script and the story made the film Immortal.”

‘Tum Bin’ is best known for its memorable soundtrack composed by Nikhil-Vinay, the beautifully melancholic “Koi Fariyaad” sung by legendary ghazal singer Jagjit Singh.

The film starred relatively lesser-known actors and newcomers – Priyanshu Chatterjee, Himanshu Malik, Sandali Sinha and Raqesh Vashisth – in leading roles. The songs from the film are still very popular.
