‘Roots’ is an initiative through which the director will bring the stories of the human narrative of art & its form. There are a series of stories that will be released for the audience through social media and YouTube channels. The director has shared the first story called Threads of Dream, on social media and further jotted down the caption –

“Growing up i was always inclined towards the art. I wanted to become a artist specialising in mix media art. Wanted to go to NID and then do my masters and phd in anthropology and design. But life had other plans. There were dreams I carried along with me in my head. Cause the means to accomplish them were silent. In Dec 2022 as I was embracing my self in the calling of the forest. It spoke to me about my purpose. In the new year, I wanted to fulfil this Dream which was deep rooted in my heart for 20 years. On the eve of our India Independence day @roots_earthsky is an ode to my mother, aunt and everyone whose interest in arts & craft have added value in their own little way. For every human narratives of art & its form who is rooted in their design and needs to be celebrated.

This sensitivity and gusto Ashwiny Iyer Tiwari also brings to the decisions she makes not just in her cinema but also in the manner in which she operates her sets. The director-producer was among the first to establish a rule of having proper washrooms for women on her film sets. Conventionally when films are shot at challenging and remote locations, the crew often uses public washrooms and other amenities at restaurants or public facilities. However, Ashwiny broke barriers when she insisted that women on her set were safe and comfortable by ensuring that there were always a one-door vanity for women to use the loo on set.

Commenting on the matter, Ashwiny Iyer Tiwari, “As a producer or director when I’m signing my agreements the one thing that I’m always fighting for is that you can cut your budgets wherever you want but you cannot cut a budget on a one-door vanity especially for women to use the loo. This is mandatory on all my shoots. It is a problem because I remember when I would be on set we would find someone to take us to the closest restaurant and we would inform the restaurant that we would be using the loo all day. In a country like India toilets are a big problem especially for women. So it’s mandatory on my set so much so that now the vanity loo is fully equipped like a hotel bathroom with sanitizer, sanitary napkins, it has everything.”

Having left everyone impressed with her films like #BareillyKiBarfi, #Panga, #NilBatteySannata, and many more, Ashwiny Iyer Tiwari has set her class apart with her brilliant knowledge of filmmaking. While taking her proficient knowledge of filmmaking to the world, she recently went to the 10th Odisha Literary Festival 2022 held on 5th November 2022 in Bubneshwar where she spoke on ‘How to write a great script’. While the session was well filled with a lot of knowledge from the filmmakers, we saw her speaking about her idea of filmmaking.

While at the Festival, the host asked Ashwiny about certain principles that she keeps in mind while writing the script, to which she said, “Yes there are some things which I really stay away from. I don’t think I would ever do horror films so that is something I will ever stay away from because I can’t watch horror films. Even if I have a woman to be demeaned there will be a reciprocation later. So, I can not have a woman who is demeaned in her stories, she will survive she will rise. And I also feel that, for me, storytelling somewhere has to inspire the younger generation, and it is important for me to tell all kinds of stories. So, if I want to tell a story about a villager who made it big, I would do that. Because for me someone out there will get inspired. Nil Battey Sannata did that. For me, Nil Battey Sannata was a great example of, no matter who you are or where you come from, you have a right to dream. A woman who comes from an economically backward background or would want to excel in her dreams doesn’t think low for her daughter, she wants her daughter also to excel.”

She added further, “Statistics say that even today women leave their jobs after they have a child. And we all know that, we have seen it around as others once who actually say that you need supportive husbands, you need a supportive family. Some say that you are privileged that you will be having a lot of people to help to take care of your kid, but we do not have anyone, and that’s also fair but the idea was not that you have to go back to work after you have a child, the idea was to keep yourself busy after you have a child to not lose your identity.”

Meanwhile, on the work front Ashwiny Iyer Tiwari is gearing up for her digital debut with ‘Faadu’ and films like ‘Tarla’ & ‘Bawaal’ are in her kitty.

Challenging herself constantly to bring to her audience, stories with interesting narrations, now, Ashwiny is all set to make a foray in the digital space with ‘Faadu’, A story that promises to touch the hearts of millions in a long format with quite a relatable concept.

Pavail Gulati, the actor from Faadu, can’t help but admire Ashwiny’s talent and overall attitude. In a recent interview, he said, “I’m moved by scripts and directors. When I found out Ashwiny ma’am is directing Faadu, I wanted to do it. While platform and storytelling format matter, the power of content can take the world by storm.”

Gulati, who has bonded with the director while working on Faadu, further added about her skills, “Ashwiny ma’am has a clear vision and creates personal bonds with her actors. She familiarises you with the world of the stories.”

Earlier, another actor, Abhilash Thapliyal also admired Tiwari’s style of filmmaking, and found her ability to ‘stay calm amid chaos’ noteworthy. He had shared, “Once when an AD was shouting on the set, she politely asked him to refrain from it. It is a rarity in our industry to have such directors. Her ‘Sab ho jaayega, shanti rakho’ attitude is something I admire and want to emulate.”

Expressing his experience on Faadu sets, Abhilash had also said, “Playing the part of Roxie was a new experience. This character’s perception of the world is different from mine. For me, Faadu is a poetic love story. Every character in the series is a poet in his or her own right, in one way or the other way. I am never [swayed by] the length of my character. What matters to me is the spin that he can give to the narrative.”

Tiwari’s last project ‘BREAKPOINT’ was a hit with the critics and the audiences, so was her debut novel, ‘Mapping Love’. Her story and direction in Ankahi Kahaniya too was hugely appreciated by all. She will next helm the web series, ‘Faadu’, which will be her debut OTT show and also mark her first collaboration with Sony LIV.

Ashwiny shared how exciting her journey has been so far, she said, “As the audiences are looking forward to an altogether different cinematic experience, the chronical of storytelling has changed with time. It’s always been overwhelming for me to deliver new insightful characters that satiate movie lovers & audiences’ expectations. As an evolving storyteller, I constantly challenge myself to grow with each narrative that can somewhere touch hearts. The unexpected love I have received in the past months has really been gratifying. Debuting as a author with my fiction book Mapping Love, an experimental short in Ankahi Kahaniya, followed by producing and co directing the Mahesh Bhupati Leander Paes docu drama Break Point. I am now directing my first web series Faadu, an intense drama written by Saumya Joshi. It keeps me wanting to learn more, and collecting experience and memories with my journey into making each story.”

Usually engrossed with non-fictions, Ashwiny is one of those inquisitive minds who brim with ideas all the time ; the ideas that help readers connect emotionally and are relatable to them in their own ways. She showed a beyond formulaic love stories in her segment for Netflix’s anthology film ‘Ankahi Kahaniya’. Centering around the theme of love, she explored a different take on the emotion with this one. Connecting to millions is something Tiwari has done. Ashwiny has made a noble effort to enter the psyche of modern generation through her effortless docu piece like ‘Break Point’. Ever since her debut, the evolving director has been working non-stop to deliver cordial stories to the public and also has been receiving unexpected love and support for her unmatchable tales.

Tiwari, as a storyteller keeps on challenging herself constantly, and is known to bring to light beautiful shades of love and relationships with interesting narrations. Ashwiny garnered uncountable lauds and praises for showing different facets of reality and fantasies in her stories.

Faadu, in pre-production phase, is Ashwiny Iyer Tiwari’s upcoming SonyLiv Original, her first project in digital space.
