Granting menstrual leave is not prevalent in Indian workplaces. In fact quite a few male employees are seen raising objection to it. But Menstruation differs from female to female. Some women have absolutely painless periods while others are not that lucky. Some have serious conditions like #dysmenorrhea. Women having PCOS (Polycystic Ovary Syndrome) and/or endometriosis have to pop medicines to get over the excruciating pain during periods. So it becomes pertinent that this problem should be addresses delicately and urgently.

In the last few decades heavy percentage of women have started working in India. Government as well as private offices have big number of female staff. Menstruation being a natural phenomena, females should be considered for ‘paid period leave’ for ‘that’ period. Among the countries that give menstrual leave are Japan, Taiwan, South Korea, Indonesia and Zambia. European country Spain too is contemplating granting this leave. Then why India, which has huge population of females, is lagging behind? In India there’s always a talk of giving due respect and honour to women, then why the government is not taking steps to consider granting ‘period leave’? Also the women doing menial jobs should also get this benefit.

Though in some parts of India a couple of States did consider this issue and tried to find a solution but there aren’t good results. So the initiative taken by Pearl Group of Companies should be lauded and be followed by each and every company, government and private, so that the productivity increases substantially as the female employees get encouraged to put in extra effort during ‘other’ days.
