Actor #SiddhantChaturvedi got recognition after he debuted in #ZoyaAkhtar’s #GullyBoy which had #RanveerSingh headlining the film. He bagged Filmfare’s Best Supporting Actor award for the same. He did a good job in a web series, based on cricket, #InsideEdge, which had quite a few big names from the film industry including #VivekOberoi and #RichaChaddha. Siddhant entertained with newcomer Sharvari in #BuntyAurBabli2. Recently Siddhant was in the news for steamy scenes with his Gully Boy co-star’s wife #DeepikaPadukone in #Gehraiyaan, a film by #ShakunBatra which had a digital release. Recently Siddhant’s co-actor was #KatrinaKaif in #PhoneBhoot. Our senior editor Mr Keerti Kadam interacted with Siddhant Chaturvedi. Excerpts from it.

Right in the beginning of your career you had a chance to work with A-list heroines. How do you feel?
I feel blessed to have debuted in Gully Boy which had Alia Bhatt in the lead. Then in Gehraiyaan, Deepika was the lead star. She made me comfortable during the shoot. In fact sometimes we travelled by sea when we were shooting in Alibaug. Katrina Kaif too broke the ice on the first day itself. I come from a small place and she fits the idea of a ‘Heroine’. And when she enters the set, guys like me forget all their anxieties and stress. So yes. I feel nice about working with these actresses and more than me my friend circle is more in awe. I feel proud to be working with them and I feel that I am lucky. I definitely want to do films which has larger reach. Good director, big production house etc does matter because they take the film to the wider audiences. I am always excited around the release of my new film. During Covid times things had gone topsy turvy but the film industry is getting it’s feet back in rhythm. So my level of excitement is always high.

How does it feel to be in film Industry? How do you feel about the stardom?
Frankly speaking I am Not a star yet. Huge stars like Shahrukh Khan, Salman Khan, Mr Bachchan sir are real stars. I feel that the contribution and recognition they have given to Bollywood, nobody can match. They deserve being called stars and their stardom inspires youngsters like me. I don’t think I have done something great like that, yet. I think I still need to work hard, try new things and imbibe different approach. I always believe that “If you can’t Win the Game than Change the Game”. And I want to change the game. (Smiles)

What would you prefer to be a star or an actor? How confident are you?
I prefer to be a Star who can Act. It’s bound to change over time, but right now, it’s all about aspiration and charting my path, I’ve made my own way through the jungle. There have been thorns, puddles, hard and soft surfaces, but I’ve made my way. Be it the scripts I choose or the brands I endorse, they are all a reflection of my aspiration. I Always dreamt of a great launch as an actor. But from the place I come from, we don’t get a ‘launch’. I think for being accepted I need to win credibility. From the very start I was clear and confident what I have to do, and how to tread the path.

Talking about confidence, I was always super confident. It’s not that films did not come to me before Gully Boy. Plenty were offered to me but I wanted something extra in my role to get noticed. Doing run of the mill roles were not in my scheme of things. So I waited till the right role, right film came my way. And I am glad that I waited.

You were studying to be a Chartered Accountant. When did you discover you were meant to be an actor?
I was always a performer. I had no inhibitions. I used to dance at birthday parties and people used to love to watch me dance. Then college happened and I did theatre for a few months. I used to love films and my dad took me for a movie every Friday, so that had a huge impact on me. That apart, I used to write poetry and paint, so I was very artistically inclined. Then when I started auditioning in front of the camera I faced a lot rejections, but it taught me a lot about what I should not do. It’s hard to describe but acting just comes to me naturally. I think it can’t be taught in a school. It’s all about observation.

You did a film with YRF, how was your experience working with them?
I have a very long relation with YRF studios. During my college days, a lot of my friends used to come to the studio for auditions or internships so if I ever accompanied them, I always waited outside at a ‘chai tapri’. No matter how much my friends asked me to come in, I never went in because I had this dream to be invited inside by Aditya Chopra sir and even though it seemed like a far-fetched dream that time, I had decided that it was the only way I was going to go in there if I ever did. And when Bunty Aur Babli 2 happened, it became one of the most special films for me because it made my dream come true.
Cinema obviously is the steam engine.

Who do you think is your competition in the industry?
I feel lucky, I don’t have any competition at this stage. Most of them are married or most of them are yet to be launched so I consider myself as lucky actor with no competition. I have opportunity to choose script wisely. But on the other hand, the new generation of actors do not have enmity towards each other. There is competition but a healthy one. Most of us are proactive and celebrate each other’s success.

Talking about stardom, I know it won’t be adulation, like in earlier times. But it will come in a different shape, size, format and medium. Today’s youth is looking for a contemporary Hero who they’ll connect with, who’ll inspire them. An actor who’ll entertain from all platforms, includiing Instagram, Facebook, You Tube, will emerge as a star. But yes, Cinema obviously is the steam engine.

What keeps you busy when you’re not acting?
I keep on writing things and thought. I love to spend time with my family and friends. Recently I’ve been to Ladakh with them. My brother has turned 18 and he is interested in music. I jam with him. My parents are happy and proud that I am working with stalwarts because they have seen me doing nothing, just lying in my room, for three years. I feel lucky and respect for the opportunity I received. I want to maintain it. I am calculative enough to not throw it away by erratic moves. I know how I have toiled to reach wherever I am today. Of course there’s very long way to go. I like to chill with my set of friends. They’ll praise and criticise me without any bias. I particularly did not like going to ‘filmy’ parties, I get a complex. I am brought up in a different environment and I keep searching for Paneer and Achaar around Tofu and Thai Curry. But film industry is very welcoming and has a community bond where they look out for each other.

What all are your upcoming movies?
I am quite new in this industry. And I understand that very films will come to me. But I am lucky that production house like Excel believe in my talent. I am doing two films with them. One is written by Zoya Akhtar and other one is an action film.

Currently I’m shooting for a film titled “Yudhra”, after wrapping up in April. I’m going to be shooting for my next film” Kho Gaye Hum Kahaan”, again reuniting with Ananya Panday. The film is based on today’s time of digital age and revolves around three friends in Mumbai.

I would love to do a biopic on cricketer Yuvraj Singh. In fact he has said it on record that I should play him in his biopic. And his mother has said after watching Gully Boy, “Yeh bhi Sher hai aur mera Puttar bhi Sher hai”. So yes, this is my dream project.

Our senior editor Keerti Kadam interacted with her a while ago and here are excerpts from it.

First of all, congratulations on your marriage. How is this new phase in life?
First of all, thanks a lot. After marriage life has changed drastically. In fact Vicky has brought calmness in my life. I think a lot, in fact, I overthink. I used to be always worried about what will happen in future etc. Resultantly I used to be constantly stressed. After Vicky came into my life I have learnt, well almost, to be calm in all situations. He has brought peace in my life. Best part about Vicky is that he lives in the present and is always positive. He likes to chill and laugh and face any situation peacefully. The serenity he possess is outstanding, which, of course, is rubbing on me. After he came in my life, my life has received a stability. We are poles a apart, but as they say, opposites attract, we are the prime example of that.

After marriage I observed a ‘Karva Chauth vrat’. I understood how difficult it is to be without food for the whole day. By the early evening I was very hungry. But it’s tradition and Vicky and his family are all very traditional. So I go along and I am liking it. Moreover Vicky loves him family, and he is important to his family. So keeping family together is important and I definitely respect that and take time out for all the customs. So after marriage, things are balanced and organised.

Post-marriage how you and Vicky manage personal and professional lives?
Marriage is a big change in anyone’s life, you are now sharing your life with a person and you’re living together. It’s been really beautiful, wonderful. He has been away a lot on shoots, as have I, so I think that’s always the thing with any two actors who are in this profession where there is constant travel, you do get less time together. Priorities didn’t change. It’s just that over a period of time different things have different priorities. We got married and we both got back to our work which is really important as an actor, but it was quite difficult for me because I had honeymoon in my head. That’s a very special thing. In that space I had already worked out how I’ll be spending time with Vicky. But we both are professionals and had to fulfil the commitments.vicky is just a very, very wonderful person, and I think it’s nice to have a person like that in my life.

Has the criteria of choosing a role or a film changed after marriage?
Film in totality is what I look at first. Criterion for choosing the roles has nothing to do with marriage. Obviously something in life has changed within me after marriage. I am not the same as I was during New York. Or in the same mind space when I was doing Bharat. I am not in the same head space as I was during Zero. So as we change, as humans it is very important for an artist to allow that change. Imagine if am going to repeat something it’s not going to appeal the audiences, so for me, what I’m doing right now is little bit of a self exploration. I am thinking a lot, spending time with myself but I have no answers yet.

I am doing Sriram Raghavan’s Merry Christmas which also has Vijay Sethupathi. That film has taken life out of me. In the sense that while I was doing Phone Bhoot everything around was filled with laughter and masti. But it’s opposite on Merry Christmas sets. I get a feeling that I am in a washing machine. Film like that takes a lot from and also gives back a lot. It’s a bilingual and I do dialogues in both Hindi and Tamil. As for Vijay Sethupathi, he creates magic. He’s so effortless that you’ll never know that he is acting. He is a phenomenal artist. Also working with Sriram Raghavan was always on my bucket list. I have learnt a lot during this film. About doing scenes, I feel that, if I do not feel the scene or if you do not get pleasurable feeling, then you haven’t given enough to that scene. This mantra I follow for each and every film.

You mentioned about having a blast while shooting your last release Phone Bhoot, tell us something more about it.
Phone Bhoot is more of a comedy flick than a horror film. It is not an out and out horror film. It’s actually a comedy, a supernatural comedy, where you have your fun, your quirks and all that. Primarily for me, this one is just a comedy film. We had a lot of fun. We did a lot of masti. We had a blast on the sets of Phone Bhoot and all of us used to literally look forward to being there. A fantastic script written by writers who are great film buffs with pop culture references and the jokes and gags throughout the film. We had a fantastic team, Siddhant Chaturvedi and Ishaan Khatter were full of energy all the time, ready to try new things and come up with brilliant ideas, improvising all the time. I simply loved Gurmmeet Singh’s (who has directed Mirzapur) senses of humour and most importantly experience that he brought in.

You have, earlier, done comedy. Was it difficult to act in a comedy horror movie?
No, not at all. I have done comedy genre movies like Namastey London, Ajab Prem Ki Gazab Kahani, Mere Brother Ki Dulhan etc. Phone Bhoot do have different kind of humour and I enjoyed doing it. It was a mad, quirky comedy. I am an actor and I should be comfortable doing all genres.

Are you scared of horror movies?
I am damn scared of horror films and I wonder how I ended up doing Phone Bhoot. I confess that I can not watch horror films. I wouldn’t even try. While surfing if I see anything horror I quickly change it. I don’t even see scary visuals. I believe in the supernatural for sure. There’s definitely a parallel universe out there. There are all types of spirits and all sorts of ghosts. You have your sweet ghost, you have your innocent ghost, you have an angry ghost, pissed off ghost, you have all kinds. And if I watch it I am messed up at night, I can’t sleep. If I sleep, I get hectic dreams. So I avoid watching anything horror or even gory violence. I watch only positive stuff.

Do you discuss scripts with Vicky?
Yes. Of course. Post marriage all the couples take joint decisions. About yes, we do discuss almost everything but about selection of scripts, it’s my decision. Both of us do not interfere in each other’s film choices. Yes, we discuss like one needs to just talk it out with someone. But both of us respect each other’s decisions.

Tell us about your upcoming projects?
I recently wrapped up shoot of Merry Christmas with one of my favorite directors Sriram Raghavan. I’m blessed to work with him. It was a wish that came true. Merry Christmas is going to be a wonderful film. Then there is Maneesh Sharma’s Tiger 3 co-starring Salman Khan. ‘Tiger’ has always been a very exciting franchise and exciting series. The film will also star Emraan Hashmi as an antagonist. While Merry Christmas will hit the theatres on December 23, 2022, Tiger 3 will release during Diwali next year.

You and Vicky are both actors. Any plans to work with together?
I have told Vicky that I’ll not work with him. (Smiles) Actually Vicky is ‘stupendo-fantastically-fantabulous’ actor. I’ll tell you an incident. I was reading a scene for a film. He came around and offered help asking, ‘should I do other character’s lines?’ He read the three page scene and after glancing at it for a few seconds kept the script aside. I asked him what happened? He said I am ready, lets do it. I was pleasantly shocked that he can memorise dialogues just glancing at them wherein I take couple of days to do the same stuff. That time I told him that I won’t do any film with him. His level of ease and spontaneity is marvellous and I admire that. Seriously speaking if any dynamic scripts comes along where both the characters are strong enough, we may do it.

You have a good bond with your in-laws, would you like to say something?
Though I can not speak, I love and understand Punjabi very well. Almost 80%. At home Vicky and his brother Sunny often speak in Punjabi and I completely understand the language because I think I have worked with Akshay and that has helped because he too converses a lot in Punjabi. Again there are a lot of Punjabi songs in our movies. So, I don’t know the reason but, I have always had an affinity towards that language.

In an exciting new development, Excel Entertainment has collaborated yet again with Diamond Toons, the iconic book publishers behind the classic comics Chacha Chaudhary and Sabu. With this partnership, Excel Entertainment’s upcoming release ‘Phone Bhoot’ will now feature in the Chacha Chaudhary comic series created by Prans along with the horror-comedy’s three key characters.

Starring Katrina Kaif, Siddhant Chaturvedi and Ishaan, ‘Phone Bhoot’ takes audience on a hilarious ride as two clueless ghostbusters team up with a ghost on an elaborate plan to take down an equally hilarious bad guy.

Excel Entertainment had first collaborated with Diamond Toons during ‘Fukrey Returns’ whose characters also featured in a previous Chacha Chaudhary comic. With this association, Diamond Toons will now launch a comic in collaboration with ‘Phone Bhoot’ where the characters will now be part of the Chacha Chaudhary plot-line as he sets off on a new adventure with his sidekick Sabu.

While details of the story remain unknown at this juncture, the series promises to be fun-filled and entertaining with equal doses of spook and laughter.

Directed by Gurmmeet Singh and written by Ravi Shankaran and Jasvinder Singh Bath, ‘Phone Bhoot’ is produced by Excel Entertainment, headed by Ritesh Sidhwani and Farhan Akhtar. The film is all set to be released on 4th November 2022.
