“Television has changed drastically in the last few years. I think initially the characters were so guarded, and people didn’t know about their personal lives, and they didn’t even know their real names. But now the television industry has completely changed. So, people love the characters, but they are also aware of the human being behind that character. And, and at the same time, the working pattern, the professional aspect in television has become fabulous. Like work hours have become good, actors get their dues, and it has been a great change. It’s not no longer a medium where you have to only slog and then you can survive. Though, of course, television actors work far more. Really, like, television actors really work very hard because the amount of hours they give him is a lot more than any other professional,” she says.

TV has got competition from OTT, she says, adding, “That is only because of the OTT platforms. And there’s so much content now. Initially, the only thing people had was television, and now it’s all over. So, television has a lot of competition from OTT and all the other platforms that exist, like.”

The actress loves being part of TV. She says, “I’m very proud to be a part of the television industry. It gives you immense recognition, especially in a country like India. You are recognised even in the smallest of towns and even when I’ve travelled abroad, the kind of recognition television gives you, because these days, shows are dubbed and they are seen in all parts of the world. So, one thing that I’m very proud of is being a TV actor, because I feel it does give you a lot of validation. And also, another thing is that it makes you a very sincere, hard working person, because anyone who has worked on television has to be hardworking. A person who doesn’t know hard work can never survive. So it’s taught me a lot of hard work. So, I’m really proud to be a part of the television industry.”

Talking about favouritism on TV, she says, “TV might be considered nepotism free, but I don’t think any aspect or any work is nepotism free. And I think it’s fair to be that way in a way, because my honest opinion is it exists everywhere. Like a businessman is going to give his business and the opportunities that he gets to his family or friends. And the same way it kind of works everywhere.”

Talking about how it all began, she says, “Prasara Care Foundation has been running for almost 2 years now. We will be completing 2 years super soon and the whole idea of this was to create a world of givers. And initially, it was 3 like-minded people who met and thought that we want to work towards being givers ourselves before we actually requested other people to join and support us. And there are a lot of people in this world who want to be there to give or to do something nice. Sometimes they don’t have time to do that and that’s how we came into being because we all were on the same page where we wanted to be givers and do something nice. But we were doing it at a very small scale and that’s when we came up with the idea that we should do our own thing and contribute our own funds in order to do something nice together. So initially, I wanted to do something it could have been on a small scale. From three people coming together, we could do better things and do bigger activities and help a lot of people in one go. Also, everyone has their own lives and their own struggles and in this whole chaos of life you sometimes want to do things but time, family, and situations restrict you. So, we thought okay if I’m not able to, someone else might be able to. So that’s how we kind of started. And that’s how Prasara Care Foundation came into being.”

She adds, “We are doing our first slum carnival, which was a beautiful idea given to us by Mr. Sahil Seth IRS himself. Of course, once we heard it, we thought that it was such an amazing idea. My daughter is really young and we always want to give the best to our kids, but what about the kids who are in slums. They never get to see the carnival. They never are pampered. They don’t know what a magic show and little things actually bring a smile to their faces. It was a beautiful thought and we are working on it now. We want to expand and do the slum carnival everywhere all around India where we organize these small carnivals in slums for underprivileged kids when they have a day off and day out.”

She adds, “This time Bosco Martis, Zareen Khan, Bhagyashree, Sakshi Tanwar, Shiny Doshii, Daljit Kaur, Rashmi Desai, Nupur Joshi and many more people supported us. So we get confidence that people are willing to do it. Otherwise you have to ask, please put a story. It sometimes feels like a favour but I think there’s no harm.”

Talking about the carnival, she says, “As I have said that there are a lot of people, in fact, who we have been collaborating with. We want to create a world of givers, and that includes all NGOs, every human being, who is part of our organization, who is associated or was a member with us who is contributing. So, it is completely transparent. There’s nothing hidden, because of course, the whole concept was started by us putting our own money. The idea was never to ask for any money or raise money but we understood in our journey how we have become more powerful when we have all these people with us. So the whole idea is to unite and conquer. I think it’s time to unite to be big as givers and conquer poverty, conquer people, who are struggling, and conquer health issues that people are struggling with. Somewhere wherever we can help, we just go out there and try to give it our best.”

Meanwhile, she is very clear about her foundation’s objective. “As I said the key objective is to make this world of givers and we are not really restricted or restricting ourselves to only one cause. We initially also thought that we would do small acts of kindness because a year or 2 back, we were not as big. We were only 3 people but today there are so many people who are attached to our organisation. We have grown from 3 to 50. We have already reached that mark and now we are now out there to make it big. We have also got our 80G certification. So, there are a lot of non-executive directors now and we are adding to our organization. We are adding people who can make a very minimal kind of contribution and we will keep doing activities. As of now, all we have done is work for the underprivileged massively, people struggling with health ailments children especially. So it is of course for the other privileged children, helping them, giving them a platform, and helping them do better in life.”

Ask her if anyone wants to open an NGO, what are the key factors one should keep in mind, and she says, “A lot of people are thinking of opening an NGO and they should. They should create a system for being givers and I completely support that idea. One thing that is most important that you should keep in mind is your heart. Your heart needs to be in the right place to be able to start this particular foundation. At the same time again, it’s the consistency & sustainability which one has to work towards.You have to be very consistent and all of us get looped into our own struggles that’s why one thing that one has to be mindful of before starting is whether I’ll be able to keep going on or if it is a one-time act. So if you’re somebody who will be consistent and who has the passion and the heart is at the right place, then just go for it.” she concludes.

“It’s been quite some time since I have explored and done some daily soap. So, it has been a conscious decision because I really want to explore and I am looking for some really good work. But yeah, a lot of repetitive work still comes which I’m saying no to and have to handle it with a heavy heart and just say that that’s not where I see myself in the next 10 years. OTT platforms and even our own Instagram handle has given us a lot of opportunity, which I’m really grateful for,” she says.

Meanwhile, the actress says that she makes sure to balance her work life and family life, as well as fitness well. “I do have a really balanced fitness regime and at the same time, work life. Of course, I don’t overdo anything in my life. I’m not a workaholic and I would just try to divide my days or weeks very sensibly. But I always prioritize my work and my family together. And fitness, of course, goes with family because when you have responsibility on your shoulders and you’re now a mother, it’s a game changer. You have to be fit to take it on and do it all. So, fitness, I take it very seriously and I think one needs to really sit down and plan and also push themselves every day to hit the gym or to do some physical activity every day. So even if it’s 45 minutes, you have to do it every day. Consistency is the key,” she says.

Ask her what is her dream at this stage, and she says, “My dream, I would say, is to do some fantastic work to be very successful in my own field in whatever I do. My dream is to help people. My dream is to connect with as many human beings as I can and just be a giver in life. And my goal is to be happy.”

While a lot has changed, a lot needs to change as well, says #PranitaaPandit as we observe National Girl Child Day. The actress adds that women need to be involved at every level in order to bring about a change.

“Honestly, as a society, we have started evolving in the past 10 years. That’s when the awareness of how women and children are being mistreated started happening. People did start speaking about it. Now, I would say that a lot of people are more aware and the laws are very strict. It’s so important for a woman to be part of politics as well, as in involved in the decision making process to be treated equally,” she says.

She adds, “It is such a deep rooted problem that if the society that it’s not eradicated easily, it will take a long time. I think the newer generation will bring this change. For society’s mindset to change, it needs to evolve. The solution is us. We, as women, need to be strong enough and stand up for each other to make things happen. The biggest thing is to speak up and this is what we need to teach our children also, not to be fearless. To be a fearless woman should be inculcated in the minds of every woman and girl child. They shouldn’t be subjected to any kind of negative treatment and to treat both the girl and boy equally.”

“I genuinely feel that the content on our medium has really evolved and surely good content has been out and people are working and evolving as actors also. Recently, I watched Khakhee- The Bihar Chapter and I was like, wow, what performances! Everything was bang on and amazing work has been going on most of the OTT platforms,” she says.

She adds, “Honestly, I still feel that the best is yet to come. And I am not very satisfied with the way my career has shaped up as of now. But like I said, you never know things change really quickly and I am still waiting for that particular project that I’m able to say was the best project. On television, I have done some fantastic work and I’ve been happy with that. So I’m very grateful for that too, like Kasam Tere Pyaar Kii was very good but again like I would not categorize that as the best. But yeah, there was another show that I did on Star Plus years back which I thought had a lot of potential and really good content, which was again with Ashutosh Rana named Kaali Ek Agni Pariksha and even that was one of my favourite shows. Writers were the producers, and that’s why the show was the way it was because it was way ahead of its time. And it was fantastic again in terms of content, in terms of actors, casting, and performances. Everything was very good.”

Ask her what motivates her to be passionate about her work, and she says, “I think my daughter really drives me to be passionate about my work because that’s how I want to see her feeling and thinking about what she wants to become in life. And about work in general, I’m very passionate about everything that I do. So even if I do something small and it is work-related, I do it with all my heart and soul and I don’t leave loose ends. So yes, that is my basic advice. I’m a hard-working person. I think I would say that is one of the best values and characteristics that I have.”

“This third wave is harsh on kids and a lot of children and toddlers are testing positive as they are running around and touching everything. There is only so much that you could do. Anysha was also unwell but thankfully she tested negative, it was just a flu. Also, everyone in the house was sick. We all isolated for 10-12 days, took care of each other and taking care of Anysha was really tough,” she says.

Pranitaa panics a lot. “It’s because of Anysha that I’m most worried. You don’t want to see your child suffer and because of the COVID fear, she can’t really step out to play with other kids. To keep a one and half year old entertained is not easy. She is at the stage where she wants to explore, run in the garden, and play. That point of time locking a child in the house is heartbreaking,” she adds.

The actor is presently in Goa. She is there for work. “It was not exactly a vacation that I went for. I was just travelling around and looking for places as we had plans to invest in Goa and do something there. That is as a family. Thanks to COVID that we have all realised that a second home is a must. In Mumbai, we have flats and I want to give a little life to my daughter where she can run around and feel free,” shares the actor.

Pranitaa, who has taken some time off to raise her daughter, is not sure when she will resume work. “I know I can work as I have a good support system. But then now there is so much to do, so many different kinds of responsibilities. I respect all mothers who work after having a child and who don’t, and take out time and invest in their child. I really don’t know how I am going to manage. It’s easier said than done, especially in a work like ours where the commitment level is high,” she adds.

Sharing more about her thought process, the actor says that earlier it would surprise her every time she heard parents would decide to take a four-five year break after having a baby.

“But now, I am in that and I understand. You really don’t want to miss watching your child grow. The presence of a parent with a child all the time is very important. I come from a very progressive family. My husband is extremely supportive and even I am supportive towards his work. We are very clear that one of us needs to be there. I am absolutely okay to be working when he is with Anysha. I don’t want to give up my career completely and not do anything. I have been working since the age of 18 and I can’t just stop. Maybe things will change later. I want to be busy and do what I enjoy,” she ends.

Discussing the pros and cons of being a part of showbiz, she adds, “The pros are that it is artistic and creative, people enjoy it. You get to discover yourself, work hard, do what you love, the kind of feedback and appreciation you get is immense. The cons are that things are temporary. In an industry, business, or job profile, there are many years that you keep giving in, you keep growing and your values and respect increase. But this doesn’t stand the same for the entertainment industry. Once things change, people don’t give you that kind of importance. You have to be really grounded and humble about it and never let it hit your head.”

The actor shares that the best part about her journey is that it was something that was not planned. “The most beautiful thing about it is that some things happened by the grace of God, so that is what I really love about my journey. I didn’t even know if I wanted to be a part of the industry and it just happened. I like to pick up opportunities. I live life by the day and that made me an artist. Even today, I like exploring as an actor,” says Pranitaa, adding that projects like Uttaran and Kasam made a difference in her career.

“My career goals are diversified. I would like to go out there and make a difference. I want to explore myself. We already have a decent crowd who enjoys watching us. In future I will be looking at more meaningful work and not anything random. I cannot be ever satisfied with my work, but I am content yet seeking for more. I think there is more potential left in me. Now is the time that you actually mature. Your 30s is when you know yourself better and that’s what I am feeling right now,” she shares.

Giving a message to her fans and her goodbye note to 2021, Pranitaa says, “These days social media has become a kind of space where there is a lot of negativity vis-a-vis the positivity. Still if we can refrain from getting nasty to people whom we have loved or know them publicly then it would be a better place to be in. 2021 has taught us all a lot. So let it be, let it go, live life by the day, smile more. It is all very temporary, things switch in a click.”

“You’ve to keep telling yourself that it is okay and have faith and if it means to be it will be. Give it your best. If we start thinking and get into that loop of rejection then it really plays up on your mind. I keep telling myself that good things will happen,” she continues, “The amount of rejection an actor faces I don’t think anyone can ever face in any other career, and that actually makes us more strong and sensitive. My point of view on this entire thing is that it is inevitable. Showbiz is full of rejections as well as opportunities. We just have to be very mindful and keep going on. Of course every actor is hungry for meaty roles… But a lot of times things don’t work out and sometimes they do. So you cannot give up. It’s important to have a life parallel to this career, otherwise you can really get sucked in.”

Pranitaa’s inspiration in acting is every human being she comes across. Her observation of people around having different perceptions, thought process, body languages, and looks, helps her.

“As an actor we can get to play anyone from a beggar to a mad man. So you have to take inspiration out of every single opportunity and you have to observe your surroundings really well. External awareness can lead to internal awareness,” adds the actor, known for TV shows Kasam, Kawach, Uttaran and Jamai Raja.

Talking more about the pros and cons of the profession, Pranitaa shares, “The kind of attention, recognition and love you get is immense. This is something that no other profession gives you. Also the respect and love we receive are the biggest plus. For an actor, the kind of rejection that one faces is the biggest con. There are equal amounts of opportunities and rejections. On TV, whatever must be happening in your personal life, if you are doing a daily show you have to shoot. You can’t call in sick like in other professions. In our work the commitment level is quite high.”

Ambition, fame and money can be elusive. How much is too much is subjective. Everyone is chasing the same and all these create a lot of personal and professional conflicts especially in metros where the pace of life is very fast courtesy the chase.

“I know everyone is chasing ambition, fame and money and fair enough you should chase it but there has to be a balance. But, you should not get carried away. I have friends today who are just constantly working on their Instagram accounts because they feel that if I don’t have enough followers I will not get good work. They are just going out of their way to make things happen. It is a competitive world and the virtual world has only added to it. People are going crazy over validation and getting attention. I feel sad about the fact that sometimes we just feel that is the only way where you actually have to put out your entire personal life in public or create some extraordinary amazing content to get eyeballs. I think we have to have a balance. We should not mix our personal and professional lives, you need to find the balance,” she says.

“It’s all about enjoyment and celebration, and in real life also in our culture, these festivals are supposed to happen to unite people and to celebrate together. So these festival sequences really add up to the storyline and audiences also get ideas on how to celebrate special occasions and how to make it more fun,” she added.

She thinks such sequences give rise to TRPs because people are really intrigued by what their favourite characters are wearing, what their style is, and what twists and turns are going to happen.

“Usually in a show there are few characters who are linked by the main lead but in a festive sequence such as a Diwali sequence or Holi sequence, you know that everyone is going to come together and the drama is going to be more intact, so of course it gives a very good backdrop. Like even when we go for a wedding in real life we know that we are going to meet our relatives and there is so much gossip that is going to happen,” she shared.

On why such glamorised sequences work in the case of a daily soap, she said, “It is because there are a lot of interesting things that happen like the songs, the dress, how they conduct themselves and handle situations. It is all about togetherness and enjoyment and the drama, so it does interest people a lot because they want to see their favourites on television and get inspired by them.”

We connected on Instagram. I have seen people going crazy about Korean content. We don’t really see much of Korean creators or Korean stars doing things on India. The fact that these guys are making such good content on India and even travelled to India is interesting. Their love for indian food is also very evident.”

Why do you feel Korean music and dramas have been getting so much attention in India? ” I think the major factor is that there is a lot of similarity in family values between Indians and the Korean households. So when you watch the drama you kind of relate to them. The way the dramas are made – the production quality, the stars, the performance – are all very nice and that’s why its appealing to all age groups and people in India.

Also the drama has everything people want to see including romance and a lot of comedy. The visuals, the story, the production quality everything is so good. That’s why people are following K drama so much.”

So what kind of series and music you watch? “I am in the process of knowing more and more and whatever I have known till now I am extremely impressed with it and thats why even thought of doing these live sessions with Korean creators. I love BTS and Stray Kids a lot and looking forward to explore more K drama.”
