Even though the industry has progressed content-wise, somewhere in all TV shows we will find one woman who every now and then becomes a villain. Explaining, Sonali adds, “I think that women mostly watch these shows, and their problems generally in the house in that environment come from other women, so that gets preference. Also, a man taking on a woman that doesn’t make a good visual. I mean it’s a back-handed compliment because two women that are in conflict with each other always make a better visual than a conflict between a man and a woman unless there is romance. I think two women can make a better picture, so I don’t think it’s a convenient thing to do, rather it’s done by choice to keep things engaging.”

Addressing the ‘female actors getting preference over their male counterparts on TV’ debate, Sonali shares her point of view. She also reveals about her upcoming production in the process.

“With every other domain that belongs to man, I think this is the only space that’s left for women to rule. Of Course, things are changing but they’re changing for the better only. But, more than anything else I think good content is the reason behind a show’s success. I feel there are strong characters written, there’s a new show that we’re planning which has a male leading the story, so let’s see how that works out for us and maybe that will be the game-changer,” she adds.

It’s true that women should be respected both in real life and reel worlds but sometimes shows seem to go overboard and portray women as if they are next to god. And that at times makes them look unreal.

“Yes, I think women are generally stronger than men and it’s very well accepted, emotionally and physically. Also, the thing of giving birth is like a huge thing, women-only can do that and that’s the ultimate pain they go through. So yes everyone looking up to women is natural, isn’t it? But at the same time, we should not go overboard. I guess we don’t have to because women are anyway more powerful,” she says.*

Talking more on how it is commonly believed that women rule the TV screens like men rule the silver screen, Sonali ends on a different note. “I think good content rules the TV screen. It doesn’t matter whether it’s a man, woman, or a child, we have seen so many shows that have worked irrespective of the gender headlining. It’s just good content that works. Period,” she signs off.

He is excited about playing Zain Siddiqui in QH mainly because he is nothing like his character. Zain couldn’t get over his first love, which is the opposite of Ayaz. He says, “My definition of love has changed over the years. I was like Zain when I was younger, but as I matured, the meaning changed for me. Love is just chemical locha happening in our head, which we tend to mistake for intense, undying, and pure love. I am no longer the guy who will waste time chasing a girl. It is easier for me to get over a heartbreak today. I enjoy the feeling of being in love, but I know where to draw the line and set my boundaries.”

For now, he is busy balancing acting with his newfound passion for writing. He says, “I haven’t been thinking too much about acting because I have also been occupied with scriptwriting. I have finished a screenplay and I am pitching it to a couple of production houses.”

In an attempt to save himself again, Alekh takes Vyaasji captive, but he fails miserably. Neel then ties him to a rope and drags him from there. Neel ties him with a rope and makes him walk like that while everyone is hitting Alekh with stones and rotten tomatoes. Seeing all this, Ghazala calls Sahil for help. Sahil reaches there disguised as an inspector to arrest him. But he later reveals himself to Alkeh and lets him go.

While in the house, Mahant does the diya prajwalan, Alekh plans to kill Neel and Chahat. He asks Ghazala to keep an eye on them as she will be the one helping him in his wicked plan.

“Saahil is like no other character. He is someone who wears different masks with ease which makes it difficult for other people to understand who he actually is. Keeping the grey inside and portraying a genuine guy is difficult but I am enjoying it. This character is not at all like me, but this dissimilarity is also a bonus because that allows me to understand a different kind of personality altogether,” he says, whose favourite show till date is Dil ki Baatein Dil Hi Jaane. The character he played in it was very similar to him in real life and there he could really connect with the same.

Conscious about the kind of roles he accepts, the actor adds, “I always try to choose different characters. There is no charm in doing the same thing. I want to explore something new every time. I usually go for the story, script, production house and team involved in making the show. Content for me matters more than anything else.”

Sshrey feels that TV actors often don’t have the luxury of variety unlike film actors and therefore they need to be careful. “We usually play one character in a show that continues for a long period of time. Till that ends we can’t take up anything else, that’s the format. This also leads to actors getting stereotyped easily on TV. It’s not because the audience gets used to seeing you in a particular role but at times actors too take up similar roles to be on the safer side. So variations are possible on TV as well. One must have the intention,” he adds.

Talking about his school days, Rajveer shared, “Comic books and novels have played a very vital role in my life. There was a time when I never liked reading books and the only subjects that I liked reading were Hindi and Sanskrit. It was around that time when I was introduced to comic books with characters like Navraj, Super Commando and Doga. When I was in 9th standard, I got so attracted to comics that I used to spend my entire day reading them. My mother would also be impressed with me because she thought I was studying all the time, but little did she know about the comic books as I used to hide them between all my textbooks. This went on for almost six months and when I got the results of my pre-boards, where I clearly didn’t perform well, my mother got to know everything. That time I had a collection of almost 150 comics which were hidden in my room at different places so that my mother couldn’t find them. But one day, when I went to play cricket with my friends, she came into my room and noticed there is always a book with another book in it. She found my comic book collection and scolded me a lot for it. She made sure that I get rid of comics, little did she know there were 100 more hidden.”

He further added, “To save my comics I gave them to my mama’s son which led to his school grades going for a toss too. Soon my mother got to know about it, and she threw them all away. However, my cousin had managed to save 2 to 3 comics and they are still with me. It has been years, but I still don’t read them because I fear my mother will scold me. When I joined theatre, I also got into the habit of reading books which I hated in my childhood. I really started liking Hindi literature and till date, I am not that fond of English novels, but I do have a huge collection of Hindi books. Whenever my mother visits my place, she says that if I would have read these books in my childhood, I would have become a government collector and reply back saying ‘’I’m not a collector today, but I’m an actor’ and she has a huge smile on her face. I really feel people should read more, especially during this lockdown, when we have some time. It will surely broaden your perspective and help you grow.”

While Rajveer continues to hide his comic book collection from his mother, in Qurbaan Hua, Neel and Chahat are heading for a divorce. Dua and Shlok try to fix their parents relationship, but will Neel be able to forget everything and start his relationship with Chahat all over again? “My character Godambhari is versatile in its own way. She is comical, sarcastic, emotional, loving and has negative shades too. We all have seen such characters in real life. I think we both are similar in the way we are emotional and loving. I like the comic streak in her, and that’s something I am learning from her and do try to carry that funny side home because it is quite entertaining,” she adds.

On the response around her role, Pathania says, “So far it has been immensely positive. I get a lot of messages on Instagram and Facebook. Fans like to address me as Mamiji and Dhari Devi Dekhni Chayi.”

Pathania feels that the title of the show suits the storyline. “This is a story about Neel and Chahat, who’re going against their families, religious barriers created by our society to fulfil their love and it’s really beautiful to see how honest and true they are. I think sacrifices are part of one’s life,” she adds.

The actor has nice things to say about the producers of the show, Sonali Jaffar and Amir Jaffar. “Sonali ma’am and Amir sir are wonderful human beings. They always treat us with respect and their humbleness at meetings and discussions touches you. The team is very good and our director Tabrez Sir really helped me in improving my performance,” she shares.

According to Pathania, as an actor, the best thing about the entertainment industry is that it gives an opportunity to experience talent and allows actors to live different characters.

“I’m loving my journey. I’ve always been creative, so if this had not worked out I would have been a music teacher because singing and music is my passion along with acting,” says the actor, who listens to music to unwind after a hard day at work.

Talking about the TV industry, Pathania says that now the audience wants to watch content that they can relate to. “And, our industry is churning interesting stories that are not just relatable but entertaining at the same time. While things were not going well in between, the industry is evolving for better now. There is also healthy competition when it comes to providing wholesome entertainment to viewers,” adds Pathania, who’s inspired by actor Hema Malini.

She said, “I don’t like to work on the same concept again and again, it becomes a little monotonous for a writer, so I am always looking for a different subject, different story line. They have to hold my interest first for me to hold the interest of the audience, so my benchmark is that it needs to be exciting for me.”

“It always helps that I am a writer on the shows also, rather I have a team of writers who do their work, but yes it gives me a sense of what will work and what won’t based on my experience. There are certain things I always look into like what hero, heroine should not be doing and that’s how I work with gut major,” she added.

With shows like “Bahu Hamari Rajni Kant”, “Shaadi Ke Siyape”, “Meri Hanikarak Biwi”, and “Devanshi”, to her credit, Sonali, however, admitted she has always been known as a romance writer. “My biggest hits have been romantic shows, but having said that I feel that when I made ‘Bahu Hamari Rajni Kant’ in Full House Media, it was something which was very different. I think we got slotted as makers who would come up with different subjects,” she said.

She added, “My second show was ‘Devanshi’. And now I feel, I stayed away from romance for a long time, so I have gotten back to it with ‘Qurbaan Hua’.” Sonali and Amir’s “Aapki Nazron Ne Samjha” went on-air in March and has managed to keep the audience hooked with its interesting storyline which revolves around a blind photographer. When asked what can the audience except next in the show, she said, “I am unrevealing what to expect from the show. Let’s see, it’s a little strange wicket I am on right now because the show has to grow so the character has to change.” “I guess we are trying our hand at the story. This was originally a Bengali show which we are adapting, so we are seeing how it goes from here,” she added.

“Thanks to the media, everyone is aware and doing their bit. Since the audience also understands, the makers bring in some twist and turn in the story to keep them entertained. Meanwhile, the actor gets enough time to rest and comes back to set. In these unprecedented times, we all are there for each other. Our team is following all protocols and we have made things stricter both on and off the sets,” she added.

Sonali also spoke about how a few shows never saw the light of the day during the lockdown in March 2020. “It is a very unfortunate that there were shows that just fell by the wayside, some could not even make a comeback and some got dropped post the lockdown. But we are trying to take everything to our stride and work things out,” she concluded.
