‘Stand Up’ revolves around five budding comics who meet their mentor to prepare for a potentially life-changing and career-defining open-mic event. It is when they are trying to be at their funniest that they realise how tough it is to tell a joke without becoming an object of mockery. The story germinated in Akarsh while interacting with stand-up comedians at Mumbai’s Comedy Store where he has been part of regular group performances for approximately three years.

He recalls, “So there were times when we were sharing the green room with stand-up comics like Tanmay Bhatt, Rohan Joshi, and Aashish Shakya. It was very interesting to see that when they were working backstage, the air was not one of comedy always. It was also quite serious at times because like they say, comedy is a serious business. ”

As most of the characters in ‘Stand Up’ are struggling stand-up comedians, there was bound to be some humour but Akarsh insists that was not the goal. He explains, “The goal was really about writing a play about group dynamics between a competitive group of people that are making or trying to make a living by being funny. But you know the reality of that situation is not always funny. You may get into a competitive space with even people that you’ve hung out with, have learned from, or are friends with. There is such a desperate need to make your audience laugh, you know. So there’s this whole upside and downside of trying too hard to make something.

And finally, Akarsh managed to create a story that was not just about humor.” He concludes, “As I said earlier, it was never really supposed to be about the laughter. It was always supposed to be about a group of people who are trying to break away from the mundaneness of their lives by pursuing slightly more exciting opportunities to become stand-up comedians. There is that struggle and that desperation to kind of break away from a life that you are not necessarily enjoying to do something that looks like it could be enjoyable.”

The teleplay stars Abir Abrar, Adhaar Khurana, Omkar Kulkarni, Sarang Sathaye, Chaitnya Sharma, Kashin Shetty, Nipun Dharmadhikari and Zayn Khan. It will air on Airtel Spotlight, Dish TV Rangmanch Active, and D2H Rangmanch Active on January 29.

“The makers have been waiting for censor clearance for the last six months,” informs a source from the industry. “RSVP applied for the censor certificate in December 2022, and it was sent ahead to the review committee. The team shared all the necessary paper work that was requested and went about the process with complete diligence, but with no solution forthcoming from the CBFC, they finally moved the Bombay High Court on Wednesday (June 14).”

Jaswant Singh Khalra was the director of a bank in Amritsar during the militancy period in Punjab who found evidence of abduction, elimination and cremation of thousands of unidentified bodies by the police. They reportedly even killed 2000 of their own officers who refused to collaborate in these extra judicial operations. Khalra’s investigation sparked worldwide protests and led to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) concluding that the Punjab police had unlawfully cremated 2097 people in the Tarn Taran district of Punjab alone .

The Supreme Court of India and the National Human Rights Commission have certified the validity of his data.

On September 6, 1995, Khalra himself disappeared. A case of murder, abduction and criminal conspiracy was registered on the complaint of his wife, Paramjit Kaur. Taking strong note of the “heinous crime” committed by four police officers in “eliminating” human rights activist Jaswant Singh Khalra, active in bringing to light extra-judicial killings in the districts of Tarn Taran and Amritsar, the Punjab and Haryana Court, on October 16, 2007, enhanced the sentences of the four accused, former head constable Prithipal Singh and former sub-inspectors Satnam Singh, Surinder Pal Singh and Jasbir Singh from seven years to life imprisonment.

“The Jaswant Singh Khalra case is back in court, this time for a censor certificate. It will come up for hearing on July 4 and Ameet Naik, who fought to get Udta Punjab cleared, heads the Khalra biopic legal team,’ adds the source.

Incidentally, the 2016 crime drama was written and directed by Abhishek Chaubey. The Revising Committee of the Censor Board had asked for 89 cuts and all references to Punjab erased. It was later cleared by the Bombay High Court with just one scene edited out and an ‘A’ certificate.

Recently, Taapsee had an opportunity to chat with Hima Das, also known as Dhing Express. Hima is an Indian sprinter from the state of Assam who has made the nation proud! Hima is the first Indian athlete to win a gold medal in a track event at the IAAF World U20 Championships. She is also the recipient of an Arjuna award and was appointed as a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) in Assam Police under the state’s Integrated Sport Policy.
