Revealing how their connection began years before this film came into being, Gulshan shared that he and Rishabh Shetty first met in 2019, long before Kantara: Chapter 1 was even conceived and had spoken about potentially working together.

Sharing more about that first meeting, Gulshan recalled, “Rishabh met me through a common friend PD Satish Chandra and expressed his desire to work with me. I didn’t know who he was in 2019, but I liked meeting him very much. He was sincere, a lover of cinema, and very passionate about telling his stories, I was immediately attracted by that energy. The first few projects discussed, in which I was to be a leading actor, didn’t work out for a variety of reasons.”

What began as a creative conversation and a mutual admiration between two artists eventually turned into a fulfilling collaboration years later with Kantara: Chapter 1. Reflecting on this journey, Gulshan further added, “When Rishabh and I first met , I remember we instantly connected as artists. There was a lot of mutual admiration and respect for each other’s work. We spoke about the idea of collaborating someday, and though we didn’t know in what capacity or when it would happen, there was a shared intention that something would bring us together. That manifestation took shape in 2025 with Kantara: Chapter 1 & Working with Rishabh has been one of the most creatively fulfilling experiences of my career, he’s an exceptional storyteller, someone who approaches his stories with great passion, honesty,and sincerity. He leads by example and brings out the best in everyone around him. Our shared love for authenticity and meaningful storytelling made this collaboration very natural. Kantara: Chapter 1 is not just a film; it’s a testament to what happens when artists from different journeys come together with one vision to create something that stays with the audience long after the lights go out.”

The prequel, directed by Rishabh Shetty, continues to win hearts globally with its rich storytelling, rooted performances, and spiritual depth. Gulshan’s portrayal of King Kulashekara has been widely appreciated, marking not only a memorable collaboration with Shetty but also his grand debut in the Kannada film industry a debut he describes as “the best one could hope for.”

Rishabh reflects on the origins of Kantara, revealing how the film is intertwined with his home and community. “Since childhood, I have dreamt of shooting a film in my village and its forests, Keradi. I scouted this location for multiple movies, but it never worked out. Then came Kantara — which was finally shot here. It was a collective effort, over 700 people from the village contributed. It’s because of this overwhelming involvement that I call my home KFC – Keradi Film City.”

He added how Kantara has shifted his village’s perception of cinema, stating, “This region isn’t huge on films, but Kantara made them see their own on screen. It became relatable, and the love and blessings poured in abundantly.”

The conversation then steered towards their take on popular directors, which made him share his admiration for filmmakers like #SandeepReddyVanga, known for massive blockbuster movies like #ArjunReddy and #Animal. Highlighting how, despite falling into mass controversies, directors like Vanga have a huge fan following, Rishab said, “It’s crazy, nobody can think like him, and I think even he can’t think the same way again. I’d love to be involved in any projects he’s currently working on.”

In a heartfelt moment during the episode, Rishabh’s wife, #PragathiShetty, recounts the touching story of how they first met, “I’m a Rakshit Shetty fan, so I went to a Ricky screening with my friends. One of them wanted a picture with the director, Rishabh, so we spoke. And I told him how proud I was of his journey—from a small village to achieving so much in cinema. That’s when he fell for me! He sent me a friend request on social media, and that’s where it all started.”

Small budget films with Original, different and good content are taking over audiences hearts and Indian box office. And the audience is more inclined towards experimental and different cinema. Films like Rishabh Shetty’s Kantara, Vivek Agnihotri’s The Kashmir Files, Rocketry, Kartikey2 and many more had less budget yet they managed to reach audiences in a manner no big film has done this year. Hence, this becomes our learning post pandemic era that the audience is attracted to rich content over other things. South film Major has had a low budget and managed to recover and made little profit. Hoping our filmmakers introspect on the facts.“

While this year has been the result of all the hard work Vivek Agnihotri has poured into this project, the Indian filmmaker has enjoyed the success of The Kashmir Files which grabbed the attention of the entire nation and kick-started the box office for the year 2022.
