Mumbai: In the realm of customer service, one principle has long stood the test of time: “The customer is always right.” Unfortunately, it seems that some companies have lost sight of this key value—British Airways being a glaring example. With international travel from India on the rise, airlines are expected to place the comfort and well-being of passengers at the forefront. After all, these passengers are the lifeblood of the industry, funding operations and salaries. However, recent events involving #BritishAirways suggest that such priorities may be slipping, as evidenced by the distressing experience of Mr. Ronnie Rodrigues on flight BA 138 from Mumbai to London on September 16, 2024.

Mr. Rodrigues, a frequent flyer who often travels with large groups of family, friends, and office staff embarked on what was supposed to be a celebratory trip, a tradition he has maintained since 2020. On this occasion, he was accompanied by 28 individuals, including his four young children, a couple highly placed bankers, a lawyer, a travel agent and a couple of reputed journalists from the print and digital media. Unfortunately, the flight quickly turned into a troubling ordeal, marked by rude and unprofessional conduct from British Airways staff.

As Mr. Rodrigues assisted in seating his group, a flight attendant—conspicuously without a name badge—abruptly instructed him to take his seat, completely ignoring his polite attempt to clarify the situation. When Mr. Rodrigues responded in kind to the attendant’s rude tone, the situation escalated, with the captain of the flight, Captain Kelly, being summoned to intervene.

Rather than de-escalating the situation, Captain Kelly took an aggressive stance. He threatened to deboard Mr. Rodrigues. He was told that he’ll have to deboard Mr Rodrigues’ entire group which included the 28 people who Mr. Rodrigues had generously sponsored. Despite this threat, it appears Captain Kelly quickly reconsidered, likely weighing the financial implications of such an action for British Airways. However, instead of resolving the issue amicably, he imposed a highly unprofessional penalty—denying Mr. Rodrigues food and drink for the entire flight. As a result, Mr. Rodrigues endured the lengthy journey without any sustenance, an unacceptable treatment by any standard.

After enjoying business class lounge facilities at #Mumbai’s #ChhattapatiShivajiMaharajInternationalAirport, we reached Changi airport in Singapore. (By the way Singapore’s #ChangiAirport is number 1 ranked airport in the world, beauty wise. First time travelers should keep 3-4 hours extra to explore the facilities, asthetics and loveliness of the said airport) Instead of experiencing crowded passenger arena and long wait at the luggage belt, we were greeted immediately after deboarding the flight and escorted by CIP personnel to be transported to a special CIP terminal for immigration procedures.

By the way #CIP means #CommerciallyImportantPeople and Ronnie Rodrigues is one of them.

CIP managed by #JetQuay (The Elite Gateway to Changi, Singapore) has a luxurious lounge where CIPs are treated with drinks and food (free of cost, of course). Moreover there is a special Immigration Officer posted to look after the immigration procedures of CIPs. It took us less than 2 minutes to clear the immigration. The CIP personnel brought our baggage to the lounge and after refreshments we were driven in a limousine to our hotel, #MarinaBaySands which is an iconic place in Singapore where three multistorey towers support a swimming pool at the top. It is one of the most luxurious hotels in the world. The rooms are more than comfortable and has luxurious facilities including impeccable room service. The Infinity pool on the 57th floor allows you to have a birds eye view of Singapore.

While returning too CIP personnel drove us in a limousine from MBS to the special CIP terminal where we were warmly greeted in the lounge. While we were enjoying the food and the beverages our luggage already was checked in by them and like mentioned earlier, a special immigration officer cleared us in seconds to catch our return flight.

Granting menstrual leave is not prevalent in Indian workplaces. In fact quite a few male employees are seen raising objection to it. But Menstruation differs from female to female. Some women have absolutely painless periods while others are not that lucky. Some have serious conditions like #dysmenorrhea. Women having PCOS (Polycystic Ovary Syndrome) and/or endometriosis have to pop medicines to get over the excruciating pain during periods. So it becomes pertinent that this problem should be addresses delicately and urgently.

In the last few decades heavy percentage of women have started working in India. Government as well as private offices have big number of female staff. Menstruation being a natural phenomena, females should be considered for ‘paid period leave’ for ‘that’ period. Among the countries that give menstrual leave are Japan, Taiwan, South Korea, Indonesia and Zambia. European country Spain too is contemplating granting this leave. Then why India, which has huge population of females, is lagging behind? In India there’s always a talk of giving due respect and honour to women, then why the government is not taking steps to consider granting ‘period leave’? Also the women doing menial jobs should also get this benefit.

Though in some parts of India a couple of States did consider this issue and tried to find a solution but there aren’t good results. So the initiative taken by Pearl Group of Companies should be lauded and be followed by each and every company, government and private, so that the productivity increases substantially as the female employees get encouraged to put in extra effort during ‘other’ days.
