Sharing more light about his participation in JDJ, Sagar says, “I think the only reason I’m taking up Jhalak is that it’s going to push me out of my comfort zone, like in an extreme way where I’ll be pushing my limits. I think it will be fun. I want to experience that and, more importantly, I am taking it as a challenge. Entering as a wildcard contender is definitely not an advantage as I’m not getting any safety weeks and the judgment is going to start immediately. Additionally, there are contestants who are like professional dancers and I am a non-dancer. This is the first time I’m dancing professionally and have never taken one single class in dancing. So it’s going to be really tough and challenging for me to match up to those wild card contestants who are professionals as dancers.”

Sagar is very much aware of the other talented contestants in the show but for him competing is not the main factor. He says,” I think it’s not important that I’m competing with some talented contestants, what’s important to me is the journey of getting better. I’m challenging myself and the competition is with me. It’s very cliche, I know, but, yeah, this is how it is because the judges are going to judge the same way. They are not expecting anything extra from me, but they want to see how much I’m capable of and how much I can push. So that’s the journey I’m going to follow. I believe Jhalak is a big platform for non-dancers as well and at the end, I will learn a new skill out of it.”

Talking more about the technique of dances, Sagar adds, “I have no experience in dancing. Whatever I have done is like ten seconds of dance for reels on social media. That is also very casual dancing compared to competitive TV reality shows. Yes, I have the rhythm, but I have no experience regarding what dancing actually is. And now that I’ve come in contact with that, I know that it’s definitely not an easy job.”

In the show, Sagar’s choreographer will be Shivani Patel. Sagar feels Shivani is one of the best in the industry.
“I think she’s one of the best in the industry, she’s very sweet and patient. She has this x factor quality that a choreographer needs where she makes every hard step easy for me to understand and makes sure that I push my limits in a very beautiful way so that it doesn’t trouble me a lot. I think she’s just amazing, I lack words when it comes to her.”

Sagar is currently rigorously training himself for the show. He is practicing hard and he has also hurt himself in that process.

He shares, “It’s been four days that I have started practicing . I’ve got the least amount of time because my casting was done at the last minute. And within those four days, I’ve been rehearsing for at least 12-13 hours daily which involves nonstop dancing. So I have swollen muscles, joints and every part of my body is paining. My skin has peeled off from my feet. And now I know how the actors experience pain during their dance sequences. I remember reading Deepika Padukone’s pain during Nagada Sang Dhol. So I can really relate to what a real hustle is when it comes to physically testing your body.”

Sagar, who defines himself as a non dancer, danced for the first time as a kid in a new year party. His favourite genre of dance is Bollywood, because he feels he is that typical Bollywood kid who just enjoys the filmy dance without thinking anything; to him, it’s the most stress-free form of dance.

Talking about his favourite dance icon, Sagar says, “India has got an immense amount of talent and there’s no way I can only mention one name. Whether it is Prabhu Deva Sir or whether it is Bosco Sir, the list is big and each one of them is an institution in dance.”

Stepping into an actor’s shoes in a show midway isn’t an easy task. It takes a lot to forge a connection with the audience that’s used to watching a particular actor in that role. However, #SagarParekh, who replaced #ParasKalnawat to play the new #SamarinRajanShahi’s #Anupama, believes that it was the very challenge that helped him play the character with a lot more conviction. He says, “There was a lot of pressure on me when I entered the show to play Samar. However, I am glad that people have loved me, accepted me and appreciated the way I am portraying the part. Of course, Paras’s fans won’t be too happy since he has been replaced by me but I am glad that the audience has accepted me. That is the most important validation for me as an actor. It shows that I am doing a fine job as Samar.”

His conviction while playing Samar is also because he relates to the character in more ways than one. Talking about one such similarity, Sagar says, “Samar and I are mama’s boys. My world revolves around my mother.”

The actor feels fortunate to have been roped in for the show, as it has been loved by the small screen viewers right since its launch. He shares, “It has definitely given me a lot of exposure. I have also started getting more calls for work. My hard work has finally paid off and bagging this show is a proof of what I deserve as an actor. The experience has been amazing and overwhelming. Wherever I go, people talk about the show and I feel extremely proud of being a part of such a show, which has become iconic.”

Not many know that Sagar is shooting for two shows simultaneously – Anupama and Kaisi Yeh Yaariaan. He admits that it is indeed a challenging task. He says, “It is quite hectic because I shoot for Anupama in the day and Kaisi Yeh Yaariaan in the night. So, I don’t get proper sleep on many days. But I am loving every bit of the busy schedule. This is what I came for, to be busy with work.”

He also gives full marks to the Anupama production house in helping him to strike a balance between the two shows. He says, “They’re thorough professionals. They take good care of their actors and everything is very systematic. There’s no chaos behind the camera. This is what I appreciate the most about the production house.”

Still, he loves Mumbai where there is no winter season. “From September to April, I think we do have very pleasant weather in Mumbai. Mumbai is near the Equator and covered by sea bodies so we don’t get to experience winter season. But the weather is really pleasant, so it works for me. I love winter because in Mumbai, it takes a sharp dip in the temperature that we usually face. In Mumbai, one can actually feel the city getting uplifted, you can feel the rise in energy and it’s a good feeling,” he said.

His favourite destination during the chilly season is Tromsø in Norway. “If you go during this time you would get to see the beautiful northern lights. There is a cable car out there which would take you to the top of the mountain where you spend the night in the camps and see the stars. You would feel that you are in space and that’s where I want to go,” he said.

During winter, he loves to eat Gajar Ka Halwa. “In every house, this dish is made and I really love it,” he said. Celebrities have a busy life, but he believes that they also have the control in their own hands. “It all depends on the priority. Yes, there are people who decide that once in a year they want to spend time with their family,” he said.

As for his favourite getaway, he shared, “I go to Lonavala if it is 1-2 day break and if it’s more than a week then I go home, meet my parents as I do not really get the time. It’s been 6 years and I haven’t had much time to spend with them, so I go at my home.”

“The idea of love is different for different people. There is no way you can qualitatively compare the love I feel towards my mother with someone else’s feeling for his mother. It is very subjective. I have friends who believe that there is no such thing called love. It is a feeling that has been fed to the general masses through movies and media so it’s a phase and process of life where people learn and grow. The kind of love between teens and early 20s is different when it comes to those in their 40s. But I think that love continues to evolve with time,” he says.

Social media has blurred the lines between real and fake, and therefore made it hard to find love. “You actually can’t find love, it just happens. You might get attracted to a lot of people but not necessarily fall in love with all of them. There is a connection that you will feel with someone and that is the exact signal that your heart feels. It’s not about social media, you get to meet that person anywhere,” he explains.

Even if one falls in love, giving time these days has become an issue. “One of the simplest things you can do for your relationship is to be proactive and manage the time that you spend on yourself. There is work and other things, and you will have to manage all that while taking out time for your loved ones. The folks who make love last, know how to set boundaries in their different roles. Understanding is very important for both the people who are in a relationship,” he adds.

Many say love is an illusion. “If you call love a set of chemical reactions that happen in our brains engineered by nature to allow the human race to multiply, then sadly for me, I don’t believe love to be some kind of energy or being related to anything spiritual because the definition of spirituality isn’t clear. The feeling and consequences of love are very well known since the existence of the human race and I would say that love is a wonderful sensation or a state of being,” says Sagar.

It is often said that celebrities, busy chasing fame, don’t find love. “On behalf of every celebrity, I would say that the people have just characterised that we are after name and fame and have no time for anything else. It’s just that behind that name and fame, there is just one sole thing we desire and that is love. We are humans too. The most important thing for celebrities is the love from people and for people,” he adds.

Talking about the three achievements that happened simultaneously, he said, “It’s definitely a triple achievement for me, and apart from being glad and grateful about it I think the whole process that I went through all these years was a celebration in itself. Though it was not at all easy, I thoroughly enjoyed the process, and that’s the best part. I love challenges and educating myself while making a stable career in the acting field was a challenge for me, but I celebrated each and every moment of it.”

“Education is very important not just in my profession, but any given profession you can think of because education makes you stand out of the box, it makes you aware of things that you weren’t aware of and it helps you in handling all the challenges and the situation you will face in your life. And it feels great to be a graduate. I had limited time, limited resources, and I had only one thing in my mind that I had to use them to the maximum. I had my blindfolds on and I just went ahead with that as my focus. And finally, I am a graduate and I am doing well in the acting field too,” the B.Com graduate added.

While he is excited about the show completing 250 episodes, Sagar confessed that he was a little apprehensive initially because he didn’t know how the audience would react to his character.

He said, “When I joined the show it had almost completed 200 episodes and it was doing really well. It was one show that I really wanted to make a mark on because whether it be a spot boy or an actor or the director or the production team, every single person is really honest. Even after the 200 episodes, I saw a hunger in them of doing well in each and every moment of their work life.”

“In fact, it was a challenge for me because everybody was so good in their work that after 200 episodes I had a question in my mind that whether I will be good enough to make a mark in the show or not. But I gave my best and I have completed 50 episodes already. I am glad that people loved my character and are still loving it. And it’s not only the audience but even the makers and the team I am working with have appreciated my work. And because of that every day that I go back home from work I have a good sleep,” he added.

“Tera Yaar Hoon Main” went on-air on August 31, 2020, almost over two months after the shooting restrictions were lifted during the first nationwide COVID-19 lockdown. There were a few other shows too that went on-air during the same time but were pulled down because of low viewership. Considering the scenario, when asked if it gives him a sense of accomplishment, he said, ” A sense of success does come but it’s more like a sense of appreciation because we all are going through really tough times. The shows that went off-air weren’t bad but it was just the fate of time that everybody was going through.”

“It’s more of a sense of gratitude I have because the world is giving you something in return at this moment even when everybody is going through a really tough time,” Sagar concluded.

There used to be decorative jhankis outside everyone’s home in Delhi, and in the evenings we would go for a long walk along with neighbors, friends and family and take a round of the entire neighbourhood and take Prasad from everyone who had these beautiful jhankis made with such effort and love. As far as Dahi Handi goes, I have seen the madness here in Mumbai. I have witnessed some real difficult ones, which are tied at a great height and takes expertise and team effort to break. The music and energy around give the participants so much encouragement, however, I feel it isn’t safe,” she shared.

Inspector Avinash actor Harjinder Singh likes bhajans and kirtans during the festival time. “Janmashtami is a celebration of the birth of Lord Krishna. I’ve seen one or two Dahi Handis. The good thing about Janmashtami is that the bhajans and kirtans take place in temples, and that adds to the positivity,” he shared.

Sasural Simar Ka 2 actor Avinash Mukherjee enjoys the Dahi Handi celebration. “I have been raised in Mumbai, so I have seen Janmashtami’s Dahi Handi celebration quite often. The festive feeling is always good. Mumbai is a cosmopolitan city where all festivals are celebrated. That’s the beauty of living in Mumbai.

Naagin 5 actor Sharad Malhotra recalls celebrating the festival in Kolkata. “In Kolkata, my home-town Janmashtami is celebrated in a big way. I feel very good when I hear Lord Krishna bhajans, the vibrations of Janmashtami is very good. It comes after Rakshabandhan and is followed by Ganpati, Navratri and Diwali,” he said.

Producer Nivedita Basu talks about Janmashtami sequence in TV shows. “Mumbai is a cosmopolitan city and we get to celebrate all the festivals, Janmashtami is one of them. Even in television shows, we incorporate Janmashtami sequence, and Lord Krishna is the saviour to many of our protagonists in times of need. Janmashtami sequences are mostly well received by the audience,” she said.

Tiger Heart producer Amit Sarin used to do a lot of masti with friends. “Janmasthmi is always amazing. The Dahi Handi songs in films and TV shows always look good. Lord Krishna has a special place in our hearts as well as in TV and films. I enjoy all festivals. In school, it used to be fun as the one used to get to do a lot of masti with friends. I used to relish nariyal ladoo in abundance,” he recalled.
