Rangbaaz 3 is a fictionalised tale based on a real-life story of a gangster turned politician in Bihar, actor Vineet Kumar Singh plays the role of Harun Shah Ali Baig, also known as Saheb. The show tells us about the journey of Saheb from a small town in Bihar to becoming one of the most powerful leaders in the state.

This year has been an eventful one for Vineet Kumar Singh. His movie ‘Siya’ which was released on the 16th of September 2022, received massive love and support from the audiences for its powerful storyline and concept. The film festival was inaugurated by the well-known Hindi writer Shri Pankaj Bisht and Smt. Neerja Sekhar, Additional Secretary, Ministry of Information and Broadcasting presided over the opening ceremony. Pleased with the enthusiasm of the attendees Smt Shekhar said “the ministry feels great pleasure in celebrating Satyajit Ray’s birth centenary, the pandemic kept the Ray lovers from the excitement of a physical celebrations and finally there are festivals and events round the country and people are watching the maestor’s art work all over again. In future too Ministry plans to arrange shows of Indian films of importance to the viewers.”

Shri Pankaj Bisht, said ”During the 80’s and 90’s Satyajit Ray was a name, nobody could miss, he was a phenomemon”. He spoke about the quality of understatement in Ray’s cinema citing the scene from Pather Panchali’s Sarbojaya enacting a muted expression when Harihar’s communicates the news of the elder child -Durga’s death.
The opening film ‘Agantuk’ was seen by the capacity viewers and the subtle drama and humour was liked by them.

The films to be screened during these celebrations include NFDC’s Agantuk, GhareBaire, Ganashatru directed by Satyajit Ray & Music of Satyajit Ray directed by Utpalendu Chakraborty, Nemai Ghosh – A Ray of Light directed by Anirban Mitra &Tirtho Dasgupta. It also includes Films Divisions documentaries & shorts as Inner Eye, Rabindranath Tagore directed by Satyajit Ray, Satyajit Ray directed by Shyam Benegal, Creative Artists of India – Satyajit Ray, directed by B.D. Garga.

Government of West Bengal’s Pather Panchali print from the Academy Film Archive’s landmark restoration of the film from negatives nearly lost in a fire is screening is the closing film. The highlight of the celebrations are newly restored versions of films Sonar Kella, Seemabadha, Hirak Rajar Deshe all directed by Satyajit Ray,these films are restored by National Film Archives of India, Pune a film media unit of Ministry of Information and Broadcasting.

‘Shatranj Ki Baazi’ will be read by veteran actor Irfan Khoosat and will be screened on Tata Sky Theatre throughout this week. Set in Lucknow in the last days of Nawab Wajid Ali Shah, the story centers around the landowner’s Mirza Sajjad Ali and Mir Roshan Ali, and their obsession with chess in the face of the rapidly deteriorating political, social, and cultural conditions of Awadh.

Irfan Khoosat says, “I have been associated largely with funny characters but this was a serious part. I am also very happy that the new generation is rediscovering classic stories from the subcontinent via a format similar to Dastangoi. When stories are performed and not just read by an actor, they acquire tangible humanity. This is a very good initiative and must continue.”

Director Sarmad Khoosat says, “A lot of literature has been written about Partition but the mutiny of 1857 has not been extensively written about. That is why this story by Munshi Premchand has an iconic significance. His descriptive writing brings alive the milieu and the atmosphere in which the story is set and when he writes the conversations between two people, he transports us to another era. The moment I read ‘Shatranj Ki Baazi,’ I felt only my father could do justice to it because the role needed a certain gravitas, manner, and diction. Abba pulled off the reading with great theatricality and used different voices for different characters.”

In the honor of his birth centenary celebrating his great works and contributions to the film industry, the Indian Film Festival of Melbourne pays homage to him by showcasing some of his finest films for viewers to watch. The films will be shown in cinemas, at the iconic Federation Square, and through online streaming at the Australian film festival. The films that will be screened in cinema is the masterpiece The Apu Trilogy that constitutes of Pather Panchali, Aparajito, and Apur Sansar. And the films that will be available for online viewing are Ghanashatru, Glaire Bhaire, Charulata, Nayak, Mahapurush, Mahanagar, Joi Baba Felunath, Aguntuk and documentary film A Ray of Light. Additionally, the Music of Satyajit Ray, another documentary series on Ray’s journey as a music director and composer will be shown at the Fed Square and will be streamed online.

The IFFM’s festival director Mitu Bhowmick Lange says, “Satyajit Ray’s cinema creates a perspective and engaging portrait of our society by highlighting the complexities of the modern world.
