Nitin Kumar Gupta finds action scenes enjoyable, editing tedious and dubbing boring!

From the time a movie is in its conception stage till it hits the screens and even after that, a director has to dedicate all his time to a movie. It can be a tedious job, but director #NitinKumarGupta, the man behind movies like “#Sayonee”, “#DeathOfAnAmbassador” and “Hannah – Love Story of the Devil”, revealed that he enjoys every moment of the process of filmmaking.

Asked which is the most difficult part of his job, he said, “I don’t have one because I find each step immensely satisfying. Filming action scenes is the most enjoyable. Editing, however, is extremely tedious as every scene has multiple ways to edit. But dubbing is the most boring part for me.”

Well, a director also runs on tight schedules, and Nitin shared, “The entire schedule is etched out in my head before starting production. It must be on paper, but it must be in my head, memorized and ready for changes. On paper, my schedule is shot by shot and hour by hour, which I revise before the day’s filming begins. In case anything goes wrong (which it does 20 percent of the time) I immediately juggle shots, scenes, locations, or actors on the spot and put it down on paper, while forwarding it to all departments simultaneously.”

But what about budgeting? “Again, it is all about making changes on the spot and thinking from an editor’s point of view. When we were filming with 400 extras for five days for my film ‘L.A.C’, and the transport budget suddenly escalated, we took a wide shot instead with the crowd for the first two days and then close-ups with less extras in the next three days,” Nitin said.

“Talent, people handling skills, and attention to detail”, are the qualities he feels a director should have. Speaking of people handling, he also revealed what he does when an actor is being unprofessional, and said, “On the spot, I weigh the pros and cons of being strict and putting my foot down or being flexible, and let the behaviour slide.”

“If it doesn’t affect the scene and film, I mostly let it slide and then speak with the actor later about their behavior and try to understand why this happened. However, if it is affecting the scene, I am very strict and get the actor to behave as required, including reminding them of the contract,” he added.

Nitin tries to stay calm and also understand the other person’s point of view when a conflict arises on the sets. He further added, “Knowing how each crew member reacts to which trigger is important in handling them and any conflicts. The cast and crew are as passionate about the project as the director, so once they understand what’s good for the project they cool down.”

He shot for his film “Sayonee” in Russia and said that he believes in doing an extremely detailed recce. “In order of priority I look for – availability of maximum locations from the script, availability of extras, closeness to medical facilities, availability of additional crew, ease of transporting cast, crew and equipment and weather,” he added.

However, Nitin revealed while shooting for “Sayonee” he miscalculated the weather, and said, “When we went in April it was still freezing, so I decided we would not be able to pull off some beautiful shots and so took some required scenes and then travelled back in June again for the glamorous shots.”

Director #NitinKumarGupta, who has helmed films like “#DeathOfAnAmbassador”, “#Sayonee”, says in order to stay hale and hearty, he leads a systematic lifestyle. Nitin, who is also a doctor from the K.E.M. Hospital in Mumbai, says with regards to health it is essential to lead a disciplined life.

“Being regular is the number way to remain healthy. Be it lifestyle or fitness regime, diet, sleep habits, we should be regular with them. Second is to be informed. There are things that work better for different age groups and goals. Knowing what works helps a lot in avoiding wastage of time and energy,” he says.

“I have been promoting intermittent fasting which really works not just to lose weight but also to feel energetic through the day. I also promote freehand exercises and calisthenics (a form of strength training) rather than gym training, for all round fitness rather than just muscular gains,” he shares.

Personally, to keep himself healthy and fit, Nitin follows intermittent fasting and freehand exercises.

With his film ‘#Sayonee’ released theatrically, director #NitinKumarGupta is already preparing to film his next in Europe. Nitin says “’#OnlyYou’ is an intense love story set over a dramatic period of time and space. It starts off as a sweet romance but escalates to an epic tale of strife and retribution, with a young couple caught in the middle of it all.”

Asked why Europe, Nitin says,”The charm of the story is in it being an intercontinental love story. We are putting in a lot of detailing on European small town culture and their feudal system. The audience will get to see Europe beyond the capital cities and tourist landmarks.”

Talking about the cast, the ‘Walk’ director says, “I am hunting for a new lead pair that can pull off the innocence and first love longing of Romeo and Juliet. We are auditioning new actors from all over and some of them are brilliant. However to find the perfect match of endearing vulnerability with intense acting craft is a tough task. With innocence, the actors need to pull off raw emotions that will unnerve viewers at times.”

With his ‘L.A.C.’ film completing post-production, Nitin talks more about what makes ‘Only You’ so special. “Film makers sometimes forget that cinema is larger than life. This is not a light-hearted crush flick but something that will resonate with deep rooted stakes and painful decisions that alter the fate of its characters beyond reconciliation.”

“Beyond all, the theme of the film is sacrifice. An inability to sacrifice for your friends, family and fellow human beings is your inability to love.” Nitin concludes.

Nitin Kumar Gupta says, ‘For me, the process of scripting, filming and post-production is more enjoyable than the release and praise’

Filmmaker Nitin Kumar Gupta, whose film Sayonee released recently, says that he wants to make more films this year. “In 2020, I filmed two films ‘Walk’ on the migrants workers and ‘L.A.C.’ on our border soldiers, and my film ‘Sayonee’ released theatrically. In 2021, I would like to double both by filming four films and releasing two. I would like to produce more films based on my scripts where I have others directing. I think that’s the best way for me to expand,” he says.

He wants to now produce commercial Hindi films. “There are two ways to go about it. Be a jack of all trades or master of one. Currently, I have set my focus on commercial feature films only and said no to web series,” he says.

The producer adds that the last year has taught him a lot. Learning about what he understood from the past year, he says, “The only way to succeed is persistence, patience and learning. The more skills you learn and experience and bring it to your work the more people will appreciate you.”

Meanwhile, he says that while OTT is the need of the hour, it will not change much where entertainment platforms are concerned. “I don’t consider it revolutionary but delayed. This should have happened sooner but low-cost high-speed internet was slow to arrive in India. It is just an alternative to television. This will not change cinema which will always remain the big screen weekend entertainment for the masses. With vaccines approved for Covid-19, this will be faster than anticipated,” he says.

Talking about what success means to him, Nitin says, “A true artist loves the process of creating. For me, the process of scripting, filming and post-production is more enjoyable than the release and praise. Once you realise that, fame and success become just a minor aspect of the process and not the target. People should start enjoying the journey and focus less on the effects. Otherwise life becomes a constant struggle even in success.”

Nitin Kumar Gupta asserts that everyone should communicate with their close ones and seek help

With rising number of cases of depression and suicide, doctor-turned-filmmaker Nitin Kumar Gupta believes there is a need for creating more awareness on mental health in India. Gupta, who is also a doctor from the K.E.M. Hospital in Mumbai, is known for his work on “Death of an Ambassador”, “Hannah – Love Story of the Devil”, “Sayonee” among others, says in India there is more unawareness about mental health as compared to physical health.

Gupta said the disbalance of hormones and chemicals can cause diseases like depression, anxiety, OCD and psychosis. “People do not go to psychiatrists in case they are depressed or have OCD, the concept of grief counselling etc is unheard of. Psychiatric centres are also very less as per our population. Psychiatric problems also tend to be mocked at rather than receiving support,” he says. Gupta stressed about the fact that people should understand mental diseases need proper medical attention.

“Relaxation and meditation can help to relieve minor day-to-day stress, but mental diseases like depression, ocd, paranoia, psychosis, etc need psychiatric medication and even electroconvulsive therapy, apart from councelling,” he adds. Gupta, who has donned various hats from being a producer, director to a music director, thinks the entertainment industry is fickle and that careers of people change overnight, depending on their last project.

“Entertainment industry is very volatile, which means a successful person may be deemed unsuccessful in just a few months. Job offers may suddenly dry up. Actors, writers, musicians and directors also tend to be sensitive and emotionally fragile and get hurt more easily than others,” he says. Sharing insights about how he deals when he feels low, Gupta said he reaches out to his family, friends, who cheer him up. Besides, he also keeps himself occupied with creative work – either working on a script or creating a new melody. “Anything creative improves my mood. If nothing else I go for a jog with some music. Medication is absolutely essential for many mental diseases like depression, OCD and various psychoses like schizophrenia and mania,” he adds.

Gupta asserts everyone should communicate their problems with their close ones and seek help. “There is no shame in struggle or suffering, others will be more than willing to help out in any way if they know about it. If you are a very private person, then a psychiatrist and regular counselling can do a world of good,” he suggests.

Nitin Kumar Gupta believes that outdoor action scenes with large crowds inspire awe in the audience

Writer-director Nitin Kumar Gupta reveals that it is tough controlling and filming large crowds in action scenes, but the outcome is always rewarding. The director, who recently shot for his film LAC, says that the film has a lot of such sequences. Talking about the same, Nitin says, “Outdoor action scenes with large crowds inspire awe in the audience and add scale to the film. Imagine Bahubali without its armies, or Titanic without it’s panicking passengers. That’s why I incorporate large crowd action scenes in all my films,” he says, adding, “In my latest film ‘L.A.C.’ We filmed hundreds of Indian and enemy soldiers fighting it out in rough terrain in Kargil, even as it was snowing. Apart from the main actors, I hired all the extras from Kargil, because they are used to the terrain and weather. We had an extensive briefing about what each person had to do before even allowing them to take positions, especially as they were supposed to be trying to kill each other! Things can get out of hand easily if the briefing is not clear.”

In fact, such scenes are a big part of all his films. “I filmed with 300 European extras in my film ‘Death of an Ambassador’, recreating the horrific truck attack where a terrorist drives a truck over dozens of celebrating citizens in Paris. It was subzero weather and the extras did not even understand English. But I managed with hand gestures and google translate, along with a couple of local assistants,” he says.

He adds, “For my film ‘Sayonee’ which released in December 2020, we had a crowd scene where the hero charges through the Russian mafia’s villa shooting through dozens of guests and guards before a hand to hand brawl in a huge jacuzzi. It was difficult choreographing a large shootout in the beautiful villa, but the warm jacuzzi made the actors and camera team happy!”

The energy of the crowd is always motivating. “In my film ‘Walk’ which is in post-production, we recreated the bus stop panic scene and the inter-state border crowd situation that happened during the lockdown. Totally opposite to filming in Europe and Kargil, this time we were filming at a scorching 40 degrees in Rajasthan and it was exhausting, but the locals went through multiple takes with enthusiasm. A loud ‘well done’ after every shot keeps everyone’s spirits up” he says.

Director Nitin Kumar Gupta is happy about audience’s response to ‘Sayonee’

While a lot of directors are opting for OTT releases of their movies, director Nitin Kumar Gupta’s “Sayonee” hit the theatres in December 2020, and he is happy with the response he got for his film. He said, “When most other movies are opting for OTT release, we got over 800 daily shows during the pandemic and a decent audience turnout. Even more heartwarming is the viewer response with 88 percent viewers liking the movie as per Google reviews.”

However, the “Death of an Ambassador” director accepted that the pandemic benefitted the OTT platforms the most and said, “OTT was always headed towards mass consumption, but the pandemic speeded up the process, perhaps by a couple of years. Netflix had already started producing theatrical budget films before the pandemic and other platforms would have followed suit.”

But he agrees that it can never replace the big screen experience. “The more people are habituated to OTT, the more big a theatrical viewing will seem in comparison, especially as a large amount of OTT viewing takes place on phones. Did television kill theatres when it became a household device? Then how will OTT act differently,” he said.

With the Covid-19 scare still there, Nitin feels that movies this year will be made on a small scale and low budget too. “2021 is going to bring a lot smaller scale movies set over shorter periods and a smaller range of locations because filming is still a scary experience for several cast and crew due to Covid. Also, the increasing trend of direct OTT releases will cut down theatrical revenues, and filming budgets will have to be lowered,” he asserted.

The “Hannah – Love Story of the Devil” director also highlighted that the pandemic caused the whole world to come to a pit stop, but sharing his views on the Bollywood industry being affected by it, he said, “Things will normalize in a few months and Bollywood will be back to what it always was.”

On the work front, Nitin is awaiting the release of his films “L.A.C”, “Walk”, and four other movies in various stages of production and post-production. “It may seem like a big task, but it’s a goal I have set for myself and plan to achieve it!” he concluded.

‘Sayonee is my attempt at bringing Hollywood action thriller sensibilities to Bollywood’, says Nitin Kumar Gupta

Director Nitin Kumar Gupta is eagerly waiting for people’s reaction to his new film Sayonee, that will release on the 18^th of December, 2020. The action flick stars Rahul Roy in the lead role and has been shot in Russia. Talking about the project, Nitin says, “Sayonee is my attempt at bringing Hollywood action thriller sensibilities to Bollywood. I have a lot of Russian production experience by now. The premise was to have the protagonist trapped in an alien world and against massive odds that escape seemed impossible. Which is why we had the hero trapped in an unforgiving Russia with only a corrupt Indo-Russian cop Arsan (Rahul Roy) to help him,” he says.

The film is very special to Nitin. “It’s a story of a timid village boy forced to go against insurmountable odds in a foreign location for his love. We have the Russian brathva, twin strippers, gypsies, assassins, corrupt cops, all going after one man. And then there comes a whopper twist in the interval which makes you see the film in a new light!” he says.

Talking about casting Rahul in the film, Nitin says, “When we conceptualized an Indo-Russian cop, Rahul Roy fit naturally in the role look-wise. Of course, to take his chocolate romance image and mould it into a deadly villain was tough. We decided to redo his hair, which was immensely copied in the 90s, and give the youth of today something new to copy with blond dreadlocks!”

The film has been shot in Russia, which was an amazing experience, says the director. “I opened up animation studios in Russia and worked extensively on post-production and VFX there. Filming in Russia came as an extension of my working there. Russia is a two-sided country. Superficially, it is beautiful both location-wise and with the most beautiful women and men on the streets. On the other hand, lies an underbelly which can get you killed if you do not know how to behave in any scenario. It was a thrill ride filming there!” he says.

He adds, “Everywhere we filmed, people would come to us and mention Raj Kapur and Bollywood. The radio channels still play Jimmy Jimmy every day. While filming a funeral scene, the band played several Hindi song melodies to us. People there love Bollywood and Indians. There was a strong spiritual connect during the whole filming which always made us proud and kept our spirits high.”

Meanwhile, Nitin’s journey to direction has also not been an ordinary one. Not many know, but the director was actually a doctor before he entered showbiz. “I was always into art, music and photography from childhood. MBBS came by chance as I scored under 100 all India entrance exam rank and got admission into the elite KEM hospital Mumbai. However, I was disillusioned with the commercialisation of doctors and distanced myself from the field after post-graduation. Medical knowledge and my medical friends always come in use. Recently, when Rahul suffered a stroke, they really helped out,” he says.

Be it Aashiqui or his victory in the first season of Bigg Boss, actor Rahul Roy has always been a prominent name in the industry. He might have been inactive in Bollywood for a while, but Rahul has never been forgotten, says director Nitin Kumar Gupta. Nitin’s film Sayonee, starring Rahul Roy in the lead, will be releasing on the 18^th of December 2020. Talking about why he cast him, Nitin says, “When we went through a list of actors who would fit in the Indo-Russian look, and have not been stereotyped, Rahul Roy struck as a fantastic choice. He had been away from Bollywood for 10 years in Australia but still was fresh in everyone’s minds. We knew he would work incredibly well if we modernised his look keeping in mind that his hairstyle had been an instant success. I fixed blond dreadlocks look for him and everyone was shocked to see him in the look when we first tried it. We knew we had a hit villain on our hands that moment!” he says.

Rahul and Nitin go a long way back. “I have known Rahul for over 8 years. He had asked me to compose music for a film he had produced called Elaan. Thus, I was incredibly happy when I got the chance to cast him in my production 8 years later,” says Nitin.

Recently, there was news of Rahul suffering a stroke. Talking about the same, Nitin says that it was a huge shock for the actor as well as others around him. “I have worked with Rahul on Sayonee, then a movie called Walk in August 2020, where he plays a migrant worker, and then LAC in November 2020, where he plays an army Colonel. All three roles are dramatically different, both character-wise and look-wise. He has moulded his accent, body language and look for each. We have grown incredibly close and I think of him as family. During the last shoot, he warned me that I dare not do any film without him! The stroke was a shock but as a doctor, I know sickness is a part of life and we must move forward stronger than before. He will recover very well, is what I can guarantee,” says Nitin, who has been an ophthalmologist before starting out in showbiz.

Nitin is also a music composer himself, yet he didn’t choose to do the film’s music on his own. “I love being a multitasker but as a composer, I know music, apart from being incredibly creative, is also deeply technical. If I am unable to give it enough time being involved with writing and direction, I would be doing the audience an injustice. That’s why I decided to hand the musical baton to youngsters who would work on the music with the time and effort it deserves. I did maintain strict supervision during all aspects of music though!” he says.
