Shashank Vyas and Avinash Mukherjee remember Balika Vadhu’s Dadi Sa, Surekha Sikri!

As the world bid adieu to #SurekhaSikri, “#BalikaVadhu” stars #ShashankVyas and #AvinashMukherjee fondly remembered working with the talented actor, who unknowingly taught the two of them key lessons about acting, which they follow till date.

Surekha died following a cardiac arrest at a hospital in suburban Mumbai on Friday morning at the age of 75. The three-time National Award-winning actor may have enthralled the audience with her various roles however one of her best-loved performances is from the popular daily show “Balika Vadhu”. Surekha played the role of matriarch Kalyanidevi more popularly known as Dadisa. The Colors channel show, set in a small town in Rajasthan, highlighted the issue of child marriage.

Touted to be one of the longest running shows on television, actor Shashank Vyas entered “Balika Vadhu” after it went for a leap. The actor, who played the role of grown-up Jagdish alias Jagya, referred to Surekha as a legend and an institution of acting.

“Surekha ji was an institution herself. She was a legend, a natural actress, full of life, positivity, and lived life on her own terms. Maybe I must have done something good in my life, that I got a chance to work with her. I learnt a lot in those five years while working with her on the show,” he says. Echoing similar views, actor Avinash Mukherjee, who essayed the part of young Jagya, in the show, says Surekha was an actor par-excellence and he was enamored with her honesty and dedication towards her craft.

“What I remember mostly about Surekha ji is her discipline. I remember, she would never read the script in English, as the pronunciations of certain words would change. So she used to come to the set every morning, lock her room, and write each and every dialogue in Hindi and then would read from there. That’s something I learnt from her, and is a practise I follow even today,” Avinash says. Like Shashank, Avinash too says he learnt a lot from Surekha merely by observing her.

“She is someone I have learnt the most from, and she is truly one of the greatest actors. Every emotion she ever portrayed onscreen has come across as honest to the core,” Avinash adds. Shashank says his relationship with Surekha went beyond work as the two would often chat for hours on various things.

“We both shared a very close bond. I had met her to check on her health, when we sat and spoke for two hours. I will miss her,” a teary-eyed Shashank says. Off-camera, Shashank says Surekha, was a jovial person with a great sense of humour. While Avinash recalls how Surekha would plant a kiss on his cheek and forehead every day. “She loved me a lot. Everyday she used to kiss me on my cheek and forehead on the set, and I am just too disheartened right now. May her soul rest in peace,” he says.

The demise of Surekha has left a dent in the world of art and cinema, which may not be filled by anyone, however her work, like Shashank and Avinash said, will continue to inspire generations of actors.

Actor #ShashankVyas is a Bollywood buff. From flaunting the wall in his home dedicated to the old classics to talking about his love for Indian superhero movies like “Krrish”, he is a true blue Hindi cinema lover. But did you know which is his favourite Bollywood movie?

Well, they are a classic again and have received immense love from the audience nationally and internationally. They are “Sholay” and “Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge”. Talking about them, Shashank said, “I love ‘Sholay’ not only because I am a big fan of Amitabh Bachachan, but there are also so many reasons that I can just go on. First the story, it was a powerful revenge drama with brilliant performances by Sanjeev Kumar, Amjad Khan, Dharmendra, Hema Malini and Jaya Bachchan. The dialogues in the movie were so impactful and the songs like ‘Yeh Dosti and ‘Mehbooba’ are still a hit.” “The bond that Big B and Dharamendra shared in the movie is still used as an example and friends still refer to each other as Jai and Veeru,” he added.

And what about DDLJ? “What’s not to love in DDLJ? The movie starred Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol in the lead, picturesque locations, beautiful songs, an entertaining storyline, and a true family drama. It had everything and that’s why the masses still watch it and the new generation also loves it,” he said. “I love ‘Tujhe dekha toh ye jana’ and I don’t think I will ever get bored of it. Also, the dialogues ‘Bade bade shehron mein…’ and ‘Palat…’, to name some, though they were made in the 90s, it can still be used today or 100 years later,” he added.

On the work front, Shashank will soon be seen in his Bollywood debut “Laila Manju”.

Actor #ShashankVyas has seen many ups and downs in his career and says that he has never let these bother him personally. In a candid chat, the actor says that he has never thought of having a backup career and what he feels about social media.

There is a lot of uncertainty in terms of opportunities be it TV and films. What is your take on it?

Speaking of uncertainty, who would have thought of a virus taking the whole world under its grip. People should not panic; the worst of times, like the best, will pass. Nothing is permanent and the more we talk about Corona, the more we are giving it power upon us. So, like any industry, be it politics, sports, the TV and film industry also is unpredictable and ever-changing. Although Individual talent and luck play a very important role in mapping out your survival here, it can never be consistent for an actor. I have chosen this profession as it is my dream, my passion that I wanted to fulfill. It is not like someone had forced me to be an actor. Life is full of surprises and uncertainty is also a part and parcel of life. You only grow once you get out of your comfort zone. One has to take uncertainty in their stride and keep doing good work.

Should actors have an alternate profession?

I can only speak for myself and I would say that focus on one goal at one time is very crucial. If I have a backup plan then I may not put in my 100 percent here but if I have this in my mind that this is it and there is no other way it can be, then I’ll give my best and also succeed. The goal has to be clear. I can never have back up for my dreams. This is my dream.

Many actors are jumping into too many things (eg- opening restaurants, getting involved in other businesses like marketing of the products, investing money in different projects to the extent that the focus on acting is reduced? What is your opinion on it?

I came to Mumbai in 2009 from Madhya Pradesh to become an actor and never ever once deviated from my dream. I’m not setting up any big targets as of now. I’m an artist and I definitely don’t have good business acumen. If at all I feel that my creativity can be extended to direction then maybe that is something I’ll take up in the near future.

In today’s time, an actor is involved in social media, collaboration, and selfie culture to the extent that personal life is public and the same actor’s crib and day that there is an invasion of privacy. What are your views on these?

All this time I have been accused of not being on social media by my fans. I don’t take social media seriously. It is a fun thing and I only use it to reach out to my fans, that too once a month. One has a choice of being on it or not being on it. I choose not to make my personal life public by posting pictures or tweeting private details. It is an individual choice at the end of the day. Posting everything online and then complaining of invasion of privacy is a hypocritical thing to do. Just like having a million followers won’t affect my craft, similarly having fewer followers won’t affect my dream, my health, and my craft. Through social media, one only wants to seek social validation or adulation to feel good about themselves. In other words, it is all illusionary space. The key to happiness is in my pocket and not in someone else’s hand.

A lot of actors say no to a lot of work than at the same time they say that they are not getting the right opportunity. Express your view.

Absolutely, I agree with this statement. Any seasoned actor who in the real sense is passionate about acting will not pick up a role casually. There is a huge scarcity of good writers. Right now, only supernatural shows are getting made, which does not offer much to an actor in terms of creative satisfaction. Many fantastic actors say no owing to the lack of good scripts. A script has to be so compelling that you hear it once and you know you would like to be a part of it. If the role is well written on paper then an actor has to be physically and mentally present and everything will turn out good. The part where an actor is not convinced is the logic bit. The audience today is spoilt for choice with the vast amount of shows to choose from and they will not accept just about anything. The content has to be compelling.

Shashank Vyas is touring ‘Dev Bhoomi’!

#ShashankVyas is making his Bollywood debut with “#LailaManju”, but before his film hits the screen, the actor decided to take a quick break. He is spending some quality time surrounded by the mountains. He is in ‘#DevBhoomi’ #HimachalPradesh, and has been treating his fans with some gorgeous views on his Instagram account. A self-confessed traveler, Shashank took off on a 12-day break, but extended his trip after the Maharashtra government announced a statewide lockdown. After visiting the picturesque locations like Shimla, Dharmshala, Manali, Teerthan Valley and Bir Billing, he went to Rekong Peo, Chamba, Dalhousie, and the Spiti Valley.

“I am an orophile and I have been dying to see the scenic beauty of Himachal, and there was no better time than now. It was a 12-day trip to begin with, but then I extended it after the lockdown in Maharashtra, and thought of visiting the rest of Himachal as well,” he said. “There is not much crowd here and I am taking proper precautions. I am more careful than usual. I am not just wearing masks and carrying sanitizer but wearing full sleeve clothes too, yes, it’s because of the weather too. Sitting at home, listening to the rising number of COVID cases, I just wanted to go out and relax, and believe me I couldn’t have asked for more. This is truly the most de-stressing and releasing time I have spent in the last one year,” Shashank added.

His fans vouch for his boyish charm, drool-worthy physique and heartfelt smile. And now with his new photo shoot, Shashank Vyas might have given many among his following sleepless nights. He has instagrammed a few of those clicks and the reactions, comments on them say it all.

“I have been thinking of clicking a few new photos and try some new looks and poses. See as an actor, we need to experiment at every step. Doing something new is always thrilling for me. Thankfully this new photo shoot has turned out to be exactly how I wanted it to be. The expression, emotions and feel of these images are conveying much about who, and how I am… I just love playing with the camera,” says the actor, who, after his successful TV shows such as Balika Vadhu, Jaana Na Dil Se Door, and Roop – Mard Ka Naya Swaroop, is all set to make his Bollywood debut with Laila Manju.

In this series comprising both black and white and colored captures, Vyas seems to be doing all the talking with his eyes. His messy hair and stubble look have only added to the charm.

Reacting to all the love and praises being showered on him, he adds, “It always feels nice when people say good things about it. My friends in the industry have always been encouraging. I just feel blessed. And what can I say about my fans? The more I say about how grateful I feel to have them in my life the more I feel there’s so much more that I am not being able to express. They keep me motivated all the time.”

Meanwhile, on the work front, Vyas is looking forward to the release of Laila Manju. He is in talks for a few film and web projects.

Shashank Vyas says, ‘My aim was always to become a good actor, and my approach is still the same’

Shashank Vyas has shows like “Balika Vadhu” and “Roop – Mard Ka Naya Swaroop” to his credit. The actor will soon be making his Bollywood debut with “Laila Manju” and shared that his aim has always been to become a good actor.

He said, “The first time I came to Mumbai in 2009 I had a meeting with a big producer and director of television, and I told him that I am here to become an actor. My aim was always to become a good actor, and my approach is still the same. I believe by becoming a good actor, I can be creatively satisfied and I will have that respect for myself.”

He also said that with OTT platforms there are plenty of opportunities available for actors, and added, “You have some fantastic content being worked on, more realistic stories are coming up which are missing on TV.”

However, he agrees that with so many stories being worked on, it’s not necessary that the shows on OTT need bold scenes to do wonders.

Speaking on the same, he said, “I recently watched the second season of ‘Gullak’, it’s a fantastic show which my father absolutely loved. He is otherwise very critical of films, shows and TV series. But I feel what might be bold for me, might be normal for you. And if you see top directors of the industry they have not touched that areas yet and still are so successful. As far as I am concerned, I won’t say yes to doing bold scenes, because even if I do that won’t mean that I will make a good career on the OTT platforms.”

Shashank also emphasised that though there are some good content that’s being made, at the same time there are some shows which you can’t watch with your family. Talking about censorship on OTT, he said, “There are shows which are normalising things like cursing, and abusing. But you need to know the audience also reaches a saturation point, you can have a brilliant season one, an amazing season two, but the third season will turn out to be boring for the audience.”

He added, “Even if you try to watch a good show, filtered from such scenes or content, the advertisement before that will be such that even if you are not willing to watch it, you will have to. And this normalisation that is happening you can’t escape from it.”

What kind of content would you prefer? Shashank said, “Be it any platform, I will do a show or a film, if I understand the content. If I don’t then I won’t do it. I have also seen a lot of actors who have told me that they are happy with just doing one show in their lifetime. So it’s all about your creative satisfaction and we all should aim for that, be it any platform.”

‘Ek Mulaqat’ with Adaa Khan on OTT

Actor Adaa Khan is on cloud nine as her digital debut short film Ek Mulaqat is now streaming on Hotstar. The actor, who shares the screen with Shashank Vyas in the film, says that she is thrilled that the audience has loved the movie. “I am really happy that it is there on Hotstar from everyone to watch. Recently, it was also trending as the most popular romantic story which I shared on my social media account. It definitely feels nice as it was first on Sony LIV and now on Hotstar, so Shashank Vyas and I are both really happy about it,” she says.

Adaa says that shooting with Shashank was amazing too as the two are really close friends. “Shooting with your two best friends gives a very good feel and you don’t feel like you are working because it’s so much fun. Manav Bhinder is my best friend and he was directing the short film which made it even more fun on the sets. We were enjoying each other’s company. There was also a comfort level that we shared and we were having fun. The shoot was at night but we didn’t even feel tired or sleepy because it was too much fun. We were also giving feedback to each other in terms of scenes and acting. It took us just one night to shoot it and was super quick,” she says.

The actor wants to be part of more content on OTT platforms. “The content on OTT is doing really well and if something great comes up, I’ll definitely do it. I am aiming for roles which are strong, powerful, or make an impact,” she says.

Their fans cannot wait to see Shashank and Adaa together on screen. “Even I am very keen to work with him again. It will be good fun and I am also looking forward to that and I am hoping we get something good together soon,” she says. The short film got released on Hotstar recently.
