Former actress and humanitarian Somy Ali, founder of No More Tears, has spent years helping survivors of domestic violence rebuild their lives. Through her work, she has witnessed the devastating impact of abuse in its many forms and continues to advocate for victims seeking safety, justice, and healing.

Speaking about the types of domestic abuse most commonly reported to her organization, Somy explained that abuse often extends far beyond physical violence.

“We see every kind, but the most common is a mix of physical violence and total control. Women are beaten, raped, financially destroyed, and told daily that they are worthless. Many are not allowed to leave the house, use a phone, or speak to their own families. The abuse is not always visible bruises. Sometimes it is the slow destruction of a woman’s mind until she believes she deserves what is happening to her,” she said.

According to Somy, one of the biggest misconceptions about abusive relationships is the belief that victims can simply walk away.

“Because leaving can mean death. Many women have been told for years that if they leave, their children will be taken or they will be killed. Some have no money, no documents, and nowhere safe to go. Others still hope the person they love will change. And many are so broken down that they no longer believe they are worth saving. Fear and hopelessness are powerful chains,” she shared.

Somy also highlighted the profound impact of emotional and psychological abuse, which she believes can leave deeper scars than physical violence.

“Physical abuse leaves marks on the body that can heal. Emotional abuse leaves marks on the soul that can last a lifetime. It makes a woman question her own memory and sanity. Many survivors tell me the constant insults, gaslighting, and threats hurt more than the fists. When someone you love tells you every day that you are nothing, you start to believe it. That kind of damage is harder to prove and harder to escape,” she explained.

When asked about warning signs families and communities should be aware of, Somy urged people to pay attention to changes in behavior and patterns of isolation.

“Watch for isolation. A woman who suddenly stops seeing friends and family. Watch for fear. Someone who seems nervous around their partner or makes excuses for injuries. Notice when someone’s personality changes, when they become quiet, apologetic, or start hiding bruises with long sleeves. These are not small things. They are signals that someone is in danger and needs help,” she said.

Discussing the role of technology in modern domestic abuse cases, Somy noted that digital tools have created new avenues for abusers to exert control while also providing survivors with new ways to seek help.

“Technology has made it easier for abusers to control and terrorize even from a distance. They track phones, install hidden cameras, and threaten to share private photos or videos online. Even after a woman leaves, the abuse can continue through messages and social media. At the same time, technology also helps us reach survivors who cannot speak openly. We use newer technologies and methods like AI online so women can ask for help without being caught,” she stated.

Sharing a story of survival and resilience, Somy recounted the experience of a woman who escaped years of manipulation and abuse.

“One woman came to us after years of being told she was crazy and that no one would believe her. Her husband controlled all the money and had convinced her family she was unstable. When she finally escaped with her children, he threatened to kill her. We helped her get protection, safe housing, and legal support. Today she has a job and her children are safe. She still jumps at loud noises, but she is learning to sleep through the night again. Healing takes time, but it is possible when someone finally believes you,” she revealed.

Somy concluded with a powerful message for anyone experiencing abuse or witnessing signs of it in others.

“If you or someone you love is in danger, please reach out. Do not wait. And if you see something that does not feel right, say something. We have a whistleblower and intake form on our website at www.nomoretearsusa.org. You can report what you see anonymously if needed. Silence protects abusers. Speaking up can save a life.”

As conversations around mental health and emotional well-being continue to gain urgency, former actress and humanitarian Somy Ali is drawing attention to a growing crisis that often goes unnoticed—loneliness.

Reacting to a recent survey that ranked India among the loneliest countries in the world, Somy reflected on how genuine human connection has become increasingly rare despite living in an age of constant communication.

“For a lot of people, it’s been a long time since someone genuinely asked, ‘How are you?’ and waited for the real answer,”Somy says. “We’ve trained ourselves to say ‘I’m fine’ so quickly that even when someone asks, we rarely tell the truth. In my work, I’ve sat with women and children who haven’t been truly heard in years. Sometimes just one person asking with real care—and then staying quiet long enough to listen—can make someone feel seen for the first time in a very long time.”

Having spent years working with survivors of abuse through her NGO, No More Tears, Somy believes loneliness is less about the number of relationships people have and more about the absence of meaningful conversations.

“You can be surrounded by family, colleagues, or even thousands of followers and still feel completely invisible,” she explains. “Loneliness isn’t always about being alone. It’s about not having even one person you can be completely honest with without fearing judgment or feeling like a burden.”

The activist also shared her thoughts on social media and whether it has genuinely brought people closer together.

“Social media has made us more visible to each other, but not necessarily more connected,” she says. “We see the highlights, the achievements, the carefully curated moments. What we rarely see are the breakdowns, the fear, or the nights someone spends crying alone. Real connection requires patience, presence, and the willingness to sit with someone else’s pain without trying to immediately fix it.”

According to Somy, finding authentic relationships has become more difficult than ever.

“Finding people is easy. Finding your people is hard,” she says. “It’s rare to find even one person with whom you can be completely yourself—without performance, without fear of being too much or not enough. After everything some of the survivors I work with have endured, that kind of emotional safety is incredibly difficult to find.”

She also points out that having hundreds of contacts or followers does not guarantee emotional support when it is needed most.

“I’ve seen people with full phones and thousands of followers who still have no one to call when they’re falling apart,”Somy notes. “Quantity doesn’t replace depth. When life gets truly difficult, many of those numbers go silent.”

The actress-turned-humanitarian believes that the rise of instant communication has also contributed to the decline of deeper conversations.

“We’ve become comfortable with quick check-ins and surface-level exchanges,” she says. “But healing and genuine connection require slow, honest, and sometimes uncomfortable conversations. Many people no longer know how to sit with pain—either their own or someone else’s.”

When asked about one message she wishes someone would send her today, Somy’s answer was strikingly simple.

“I wish someone would just say, ‘I’m here. You don’t have to explain anything. I’m not going anywhere.’ That’s it. No advice. No fixing. Just presence,” she says. “Sometimes that single sentence can keep someone from falling apart completely. I’ve witnessed that many times in my own life and through the work we do at No More Tears.”

In the Time Out City Life Index 2025, Mumbai has been named as the happiest city in Asia. And while this might come as a surprise to many, considering the fast pace and daily challenges the city offers, former Bollywood actress and NGO No More Tears founder Somy Ali feels happiness in the city goes far beyond infrastructure or comfort. She stressed it lies in its people, its spirit, and the stories it creates.

She said, “For me, happiness in Mumbai isn’t about perfect infrastructure or a slow pace of life. It’s about the incredible resilience and spirit of its people. Mumbai is a city that hugs you tight even when it exhausts you. True happiness here comes from the sense of belonging, the energy of chasing dreams, and the knowledge that no matter how tough things get, people stand together.”

“It’s the city of hope where a chaiwala can become prime minister, where my own father was born, and where, as a 7-year-old girl on my first trip, I met my idol Rajesh Khanna, a memory I will cherish forever. It’s also where a girl from Miami can stand on film sets with the greatest legends of Bollywood and later build an NGO that saves thousands of lives,” she added.

She believes the biggest factor adding to this is the sense of opportunity and deep-rooted community. She said, “Mumbai has always been a melting pot. From its forgotten Gujarati roots, it was once very much part of that heritage, along with the prominent Marathi people, the Parsis who came from Iran and made it their home, and the often-forgotten Jews of India who also settled here centuries ago. One could argue Mumbai was one of the world’s first truly cosmopolitan cities.”

“That incredible diversity, combined with the fast-paced world of finance, the vibrant industries, and of course Bollywood, creates a unique, electrifying energy that makes people feel truly alive,” she added.

What truly sets Mumbai apart, she believes, is not just what it offers but how it makes people feel. She said, “Mumbai doesn’t just give you a city; it gives you an identity and a family. In other cities you may have more comfort, but in Mumbai you have stories, struggle, celebration, and a living history every single day.”

“The city accepts you exactly as you are, broken dreams, big ambitions, and all. That unconditional acceptance, combined with the unmatched hustle and the way people from completely different backgrounds come together, is what makes it irreplaceable,” she added.

Despite its reputation for being relentless and demanding, she feels the people in Mumbai have mastered the art of finding joy in small things. She added, “After a long, chaotic day, a hot cup of chai and vada pav tastes like victory. The city teaches you to celebrate the little wins. People complain, but they also laugh about it, help each other, and keep moving forward. That resilience and ability to find humor even in chaos is Mumbai’s secret happiness formula.”

There has also been a noticeable shift in how people view the city now. She said, “Better connectivity through metro lines, improved safety for women in many areas, the rise of new public spaces, and a visible push towards cleanliness and infrastructure are definitely helping. More importantly, I think there’s a growing sense of pride and ownership among citizens.”

“People are actively participating in making their neighborhoods better. The post-pandemic realization that life is short has also made people value relationships and simple joys even more,” she added.

Even with its undeniable challenges, rising costs, traffic, and infrastructure gaps, Mumbai continues to hold its place as a city of hope. She said, “Happiness in Mumbai has never been about perfection; it’s about perspective and perseverance. Yes, the rents are sky-high, traffic is painful, and monsoons test your limits. But the city gives you something priceless in return: the feeling that you are part of something bigger than yourself.”

“As long as Mumbai continues to nurture dreams and offers hope to millions, people will happily trade some comfort for that magic. The real challenge is to keep improving the infrastructure without losing the soul that makes Mumbai so special,” Somy ended.

Former Bollywood actress Somy Ali is busy running her NGO, No More Tears, in Florida, USA. However, her Bollywood roots often resurface, with her sharing never-seen-before pictures from her time in Mumbai. She recently shared a picture with Henna-famed actor #ZebaBakhtiar and revealed that they were often drawn to each other.

She took to her Instagram page and wrote, “So for all you Youngins out there who grew up with social media and are able to literally catch celebrities saying things and sharing their lives with you. We 90s teens didn’t have that luxury, and the tabloids worldwide took unbelievable advantage of this fact. This #tbt we go back to a memory of my first time meeting in 1993 with the stunningly gorgeous Henna heroine, Zeba Bakhtiar.”

She continued, “Given we were both Pakistani-born, while I was raised in the U.S., the magazines decided to do what they did best: pit us against one another, but it didn’t work to their dismay. And to date I have the utmost respect and consider our very first encounter with the utmost fondness. Zeba was and is one of the most beautiful people I have ever met, and I only have fond memories of her. Here’s wishing her all the goodness in the world.”

Somy was a popular face in Bollywood in the 90s. She was featured alongside the who’s who of Bollywood, including Mithun Chakraborty, Saif Ali Khan, Chunky Pandey, and Sanjay Dutt, among others. While her focus is entirely on her NGO now, she often takes a trip down the memory lane to her time in Bollywood and fondly remembers the good times she had and friends she made.

Actor and activist Somy Ali continues to channel her journey into meaningful initiatives, from her humanitarian work with No More Tears to her purpose-driven T-shirt designs that reflect empathy and awareness.

Speaking about how it all began, Somy shares that designing T-shirts was born out of a period of self-discovery. “I started designing T-shirts after I stepped away from Bollywood. That chapter of my life taught me a lot, but I needed to rediscover who I was beyond the screen. I studied psychology in Miami, film in New York, and broadcast journalism in South Florida. Those experiences grounded me. They gave me a deeper understanding of people, of trauma, of storytelling, and of truth.”

She emphasizes that the idea was never rooted in fashion alone. “Designing T-shirts came from that space. It wasn’t about fashion, it was about meaning. I wanted to create something that people could wear that stood for empathy, awareness, and humanity. That’s how ‘Human Being’ was born. It was never a brand to me, it was a reminder of who we are at our core.”

Addressing comparisons often drawn with similar names in the public domain, Somy chooses to focus on intent rather than individuals. “I don’t want to focus on individuals. For me, the focus has always been the work. Everything I’ve built, from those early ideas to No More Tears, has come from a place of purpose and lived experience. It’s about helping survivors heal, about giving people a second chance at life. Names can overlap, ideas can evolve, but what truly matters is intention and action. I choose to put my energy into saving lives. That’s where my truth is.”

Talking about her latest collection, she reveals it is deeply personal and inspired by real experiences. “This collection is deeply personal. It reflects everything I’ve learned, not just in my own life, but through the people I’ve helped and those who have inspired me. You’ll see words and symbols asking us to question ourselves. Questioning our humanity, our love for our fellow humans, and for our planet.”

She adds, “These are not just phrases, they are affirmations I’ve seen change lives. The colors are calming and grounding, soft whites, earthy tones, gentle pastels, with some strong blacks to represent resilience. I wanted each piece to feel like comfort, like strength, like a quiet reminder that you’re not alone.”

Sharing how people can support the initiative, Somy highlights the deeper impact behind each purchase. “They’ll be available through platforms connected to No More Tears and through my official digital channels. But more importantly, every purchase supports the work we do. It helps us rescue, rehabilitate, and rebuild lives.”

She concludes with a powerful note on purpose-driven fashion. “So when someone buys a T-shirt, they’re not just buying clothing. They’re becoming part of a mission. They’re helping save lives. All proceeds go to saving lives.”

Former Bollywood actress Somy Ali, president and founder of No More Tears and 3-time US Presidential Award recipient, has shared her thoughts on the girl child trafficking that continues to happen in the country. She revealed that through her nonprofit she has witnessed many girls being sent across borders.

She said, “India’s daughters are not for sale. I am writing not as a former actress. Not as a public figure. Not as someone who once belonged to an industry of lights and lenses. I am writing as a woman who has held six-year-old girls who should have been in school but instead were being sold into human sex trafficking here in the US. I am writing as someone who has rescued nine-year-olds who could not even spell their own names but had already learned the language of fear.”

“This is not a headline for me. This is my lived reality. Through my nonprofit, No More Tears, we have rescued children and women from trafficking networks that stretch across borders from Bangladesh to India, from villages in Punjab to cities like Mumbai and Chennai, and from poverty into exploitation. The routes change. The vulnerability does not,” she added.

She shared that a six-year-old does not understand sex trafficking and added, “She understands pain and violence. She understands hunger. She understands abandonment. I have sat with children who were told they were being taken to Disneyland. I have seen forged documents. I have heard stories of brokers who promise parents one thousand dollars for their daughters to be adopted and who were delivered for something else entirely.”

She continued that this is organized crime, and said, “It preys on poverty, on illiteracy, on gender inequality, and on the normalization of silence. India has made progress. Laws exist. Task forces exist. Police officers and NGOs work tirelessly. But the scale of this problem requires more than isolated interventions. It requires a coordinated, technology-driven, zero-tolerance national mission.”

Somy then makes a request to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and shares that she believes in the slogan “Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao,” but the reality is far from this. She said, “I have held the daughters who were never protected long enough to be educated. We cannot allow a nation that is becoming a global digital powerhouse to remain vulnerable to trafficking networks that exploit our weakest citizens.”

She requested, “Cross Border Intelligence Integration—Sex trafficking from Bangladesh and India requires seamless intelligence coordination. We need real-time data sharing between border states and central agencies. Human traffickers are using digital tools. Our response must be faster and smarter. Technology for Child Identification—Biometric and digital ID systems must be leveraged not just for banking or welfare but for missing children tracking. Every rescued child should immediately enter a unified national database accessible to vetted law enforcement units across states.”

“Fast Track Courts for Child Trafficking—Justice delayed is justice denied. Survivors relive trauma every time a case drags on. Dedicated fast-track courts specifically for child trafficking cases would send a powerful deterrent message. Survivor Rehabilitation as a National Priority – Rescue is only the beginning. Rehabilitation requires psychological care, education, safe housing, and long-term mentorship. Without it, many children are retrafficked. We must fund rehabilitation with the same urgency as rescue operations,” she added.

She further wrote, “Accountability for Complicity—Trafficking networks do not survive without protection, whether through corruption, intimidation, or indifference. There must be strict consequences for officials who enable or ignore these crimes.”

Somy makes it clear that her words are not meant to criticize, but she is only sharing what she has seen in the eyes of children who still believe adults will save them. She said, “From Mumbai, I met a child who thought abuse was her obligation. From Punjab, I met a girl who believed she was being punished by God. From Chennai, I held a child who had memorized escape routes but did not know her multiplication tables. I know of families who sold daughters out of desperation, not cruelty.”

She explained that poverty is a trafficker’s greatest ally and said, “This is not a women’s issue. This is not a regional issue. This is a national security issue, a human rights issue, and a moral issue. India cannot lead the world in innovation while its daughters disappear into darkness. Prime Minister Modi, you have the mandate and the platform to make child trafficking eradication a defining legacy issue.”

“A nationwide public-private task force integrating technology companies, NGOs, border control, the judiciary, and survivor-led organizations could change the trajectory of thousands of lives. I am ready to help. I am ready to bring the data, the field experience, and the survivor testimonies. This is not about politics. This is about protection. A nine-year-old should be learning the alphabet, not survival. A nine-year-old should be choosing crayons, not calculating how to stay alive. India’s daughters are not commodities. They are not currency. They are not collateral damage of poverty. They are the future. And the future deserves more than slogans. It deserves action,” she ended.

Former Bollywood actor Somy Ali recently took to Instagram to heap praise on her contemporaries — Tabu, Manisha Koirala, and Raveena Tandon — celebrating both their natural beauty and exceptional talent.

Reflecting on her nine-year stint in Hindi cinema during the 1990s, Somy shared that the three actors were among her closest friends during their teenage years in the industry. In her heartfelt appreciation post, she wrote, “Given I was in Hindi cinema in the 90’s for nine years, these three teenage actors were my close friends. This gives me the right to tell you that never have I seen anyone so stunningly and breathtakingly beautiful WITHOUT makeup than these three young ladies. (sic)”

While emphasising their striking natural beauty, Somy also acknowledged their immense acting prowess. She noted that entire books could be written about Tabu’s craft as well as the performances and careers of Manisha and Raveena.

Highlighting the importance of uplifting one another, she added that witnessing someone’s flawless beauty up close without a speck of makeup was worth acknowledging. “Because what else is sisterhood really about otherwise? It’s never ever too late to uplift anyone who is deserving of it,” she wrote.

Her post resonated with fans, who praised the spirit of camaraderie and admiration among the leading ladies of 90s Bollywood.

Actor and activist Somy Ali recently opened up about the growing stress of modern life, sharing thoughtful insights on why people feel overwhelmed despite comfort and stability.

“Stress today is less about what we have and more about how relentlessly we judge ourselves against an imagined ideal,” Somy said. “Circumstances matter, of course. Poverty, violence, illness, injustice are real stressors. But for many people who are materially safe, stress comes from the constant internal pressure to be more, do more, achieve faster, and never pause.”

Reflecting on modern definitions of success, she added, “We are living in an age where worth is measured by productivity, visibility, and validation. When your mind is constantly told you’re behind even when you’re safe, you stay stressed. Not because life is unbearable, but because peace has been made to feel undeserved.”

Speaking about why people who appear to have everything still feel dissatisfied, Somy described the idea of having it all as unrealistic. “Having it all is a myth sold to us without an instruction manual,” she said. “Modern society tells people to have success, beauty, love, money, influence, and do it all perfectly. But it never teaches emotional regulation, self-acceptance, or how to sit with discomfort.”

She further explained, “Many people who ‘have it all’ are exhausted by maintaining the image of having it all. They are terrified of losing it, being exposed, or slowing down. We’ve confused achievement with fulfillment, and applause with peace.”

Somy also addressed constant comparison as a major cause of unhappiness today. “Comparison is one of the quietest yet most destructive stressors of our time,” she noted. “Social media didn’t invent comparison, but it industrialized it. We now compare our behind the scenes to everyone else’s highlight reels every day.”

“Comparison steals joy because it convinces you that someone else’s life invalidates yours,” she continued. “There will always be someone richer, freer, younger, or more admired. Peace begins when you stop auditioning for approval and start living in alignment with your own values.”

Talking about the habit of always wanting the opposite of what one has, Somy shared, “That cycle exists because we confuse change with escape. When you’re home, you want to travel. When you travel, you crave stability. When you’re busy, you want rest, and when you rest, you feel guilty for not doing enough.”

She added, “The solution isn’t choosing one over the other. It’s learning to be present where you are. Ask yourself: what is this moment trying to teach me instead of what is it trying to take from me? Contentment isn’t about staying still forever. It’s about not abandoning yourself while moving forward.”

On the role of gratitude, Somy was clear that it must be genuine. “Gratitude is practical, but only when it’s honest,” she said. “Forced gratitude can feel dismissive, especially to those in pain. I don’t believe in toxic positivity. But I do believe gratitude, when grounded in reality, can recalibrate the nervous system.”

“Gratitude doesn’t erase stress, it creates emotional breathing room,” she added. “For survivors, gratitude is not about pretending everything is fine, it’s about acknowledging resilience.”

Sharing simple daily practices, Somy suggested, “Name three things that didn’t go wrong today. Pause before sleep and thank your body for one thing it carried you through. Replace ‘I have to’ with ‘I get to’ once a day. Write one sentence about something ordinary you often overlook. Breathe intentionally for sixty seconds, acknowledging that you are alive and safe in that moment.”

Concluding her thoughts, she said, “Gratitude isn’t about denying struggle. It’s about remembering you more than your stress. In a world constantly telling us we are lacking, choosing presence and gratitude is a quiet act of resistance. Peace doesn’t come from having more. It comes from making peace with where you are, while still honoring where you want to go.”

Actor-turned-activist Somy Ali has sustained a serious injury, suffering a two-bone broken fracture that requires six weeks of strict bed rest followed by intensive physical therapy. Despite the painful setback, the founder of No More Tears (NMT) says her work for abuse victims will not slow down.

Somy, known for her relentless commitment to supporting survivors of domestic violence and human trafficking, shared that she will continue coordinating with law enforcement and victims via Zoom throughout her recovery.

“Abuse doesn’t care if you have a fractured ankle, and neither does law enforcement,” she said, emphasizing that her injury cannot come in the way of urgent rescue efforts.

Somy’s ability to communicate in multiple languages—including Hindi, Urdu, Gujarati, Punjabi, Sindhi, and Arabic, owing to her Iraqi maternal lineage—has enabled NMT to assist victims across India, Bangladesh, Saudi Arabia, and Pakistan. “NMT provides very unique services because of our linguistic and cultural access,” she added.

The activist revealed that her dedication remains unwavering—even immediately after surgery.

“When I came out of the operating room, the first thing I did upon gaining consciousness was call back a victim we are helping in another state,” she recalled.

She highlighted the added complexities in cases where the abuser holds institutional power. Referring to a current case, Somy said, “The husband is in the military, so he’s got that bro-code support like some police officers do if they are domestic-violence abusers. That makes it tough because there’s blatant abuse of power.”

Despite the physical pain and mobility challenges ahead, Somy remains focused on her mission.

“Fractures or excruciating pain—my priority is NMT. If I can help from home even on bed rest, I will not back down,” she affirmed.

Marking the organization’s 19th year, Somy expressed her enthusiasm about NMT’s growth. “I am beyond elated with our new set of board members and private donors,” she said, calling it a promising new chapter for the non-profit.

Actor and humanitarian Somy Ali believes that failure is not something to be feared but embraced, especially by young people who are just beginning their journey. Opening up about the role setbacks have played in shaping her life, she said, “Failure is not just important, it is essential. It is the brutal teacher that success never is. Every no, every door slammed, every heartbreak shaped me from Bollywood’s abuse to building No More Tears from nothing. Young people starting out should not fear failure, they should chase it. It strips ego, builds grit and reveals truth. My biggest falls, abuse, blacklisting and loss, led to my greatest rises. Failure is not the end, it is the forge. Embrace it early, learn fast and rise stronger. Without it, success is hollow. Remember, you never win if you never lose.”

Reflecting on the habits and mindsets that helped her survive and grow during her most difficult phases, Somy shared, “During my darkest struggles, abuse, isolation and starting over, the habits that saved me were simple but unbreakable. Daily journaling to process pain, meditation to quiet the chaos, and one act of kindness each day, even if it was small. My NGO is my lifeline, helping anyone and reminding me that even the smallest effort matters. My mindset was, this too shall pass and pain is temporary, purpose is forever. I refused to let others define me and turned victim into voice. I made gratitude lists even on awful days and surrounded myself with truth tellers, not enablers. These are the things that kept me alive and then helped me thrive.’”

Speaking about how her idea of success has transformed over the years, she said, “In my younger days, success was fame, lights, cameras, being wanted and admired. Bollywood fed that illusion, but it was empty. Today, success has an impact. One survivor was freed. One voice amplified. No More Tears reaching 50,000 lives. A conversation that shifts minds. Money is just a tool for the mission and fame is irrelevant unless it serves truth. My definition of success has changed completely from external validation to internal peace and measurable change. Real success leaves the world better, not your ego bigger.”
