When #EmraanHashmis defiant character says that marriage is nothing more than a contract, he is spitting facts.

In Suparn S Varma’s film, inspired by real cases and constitutional debates, marriage is stripped of its sentimentality. If marriage is a contract, Emraan argues, then so is its dissolution and no one should have the right to weaponize faith to bypass justice.

On the other side stands #YamiGautams character, who in her final monologue says, “Sharia says, any man who gives triple talaq should be punished with lashes. But tell me, Your Honour, how many men’s backs have you ever seen scarred that way?”

The silence that follows is damning. As the film argues that the Quran and the Constitution are not enemies but allies, both born from the same moral soil of justice, equality, and truth, the audience bursts into a thunderous applause.

By the time she says, “What’s written in the Holy Quran is echoed by our Constitution and our law,” the film’s ideology crystallizes. HAQ becomes about the confrontation between what is practiced in the name of religion and what is preached by religion itself.

Junglee Pictures positions HAQ as a courtroom drama, but it’s really an ideological reckoning. If both the Quran and the Constitution demand justice, why do we so often deny it in their name?

HAQ trailer, starring #EmraanHashmi, #YamiGautamDhar, & #VartikaSingh, has broken the internet with its daring concept about a Muslim woman’s fight for justice. Directed by #SuparnSVarma, the film is inspired by the landmark judgement of the Supreme Court on Mohd. Ahmed Khan v. Shah Bano Begum case. The trailer was unveiled just a day ago, and it has left the internet divided like no other, leaving many talking about “converted” Muslims and how several are always behind demeaning Islam.

A string of users have expressed thoughts surrounding the film, with a user saying, “Converted mullas crying and leftist librando will say it’s propaganda.” Another says, “BJP teen talaak ban, Muslim mahilao ka suraksha kavach.”

A user expressed his views in a long comment, stating, “Jitna Islam ko badnam karne par movie banaoge utna logo main interest aata hai Islam ko padhne ka…aur jab Islam ko wo padhte hai Islam qubool karte hai ye movie kya hi kar legi Islam ka. With audiences strongly reacting to the trailer, there’s an equal level of curiosity building about what’s more to unveil as the film releases. The film follows the story of a Muslim woman who demands rights for herself and her children under Section 125. As the film reimagines one of the most controversial and game-changing cases in India of the 80s, it has left the internet talking!

During the film’s trailer launch event, Emraan Hashmi also urged Muslim audiences to watch the film in theatres. “It is a pro-women film. Meri community ke liye, I felt that this is from a liberal Muslim point of view. I think this is a great piece of work. Muslims should really come and watch this film because you will connect with it, in a very different way,” he had said.
