Starring Manoj Bajpayee, Diljit Dosanjh and Fatima Sana Sheikh, the film directed by Abhishek Sharma portrays an incredibly zany story about a unique battle of wits between a wedding detective and a prospective groom. At its heart is a beautiful love story that will put a smile on the faces of the viewers. Set in the 90s, the film is a simple and effective tale of innocence and charming romance. The big screen experience is back after a strenuous hiatus in 2020. And amongst the first mainstream superstars to come out in support of cinemas that had been lying shut since March, is Aamir Khan who watched Suraj Pe Mangal Bhari at a suburban multiplex last evening with his daughter Ira. The film starring Manoj Bajpayee, Diljit Dosanjh and Fatima Sana Sheikh has been making its audience chuckle with its quirky narrative.

At the screening, Aamir spoke about how much he is looking forward to the big screen experience. “We’ve been watching films on laptops for a long time since the lockdown and this big screen experience is so heartening. People have been praising the film, Diljit and Manoj are both being praiseda lot. I wish the very best to the entire team and to all theatres who’ve opened up. Stay safe!”

Aamir’s move is being hailed by exhibitors as the actor by merely stepping out for the film took away the stigma of watching films in the theatres. Review : ‘Paisa Vasool’ entertainment : ‘Suraj Pe Mangal Bhari’

The corona virus pandemic had compelled entertainment industries across the world to shut and the theatres too were closed indefinitely. In India, after relaxation in lockdown, cinema theatres are allowed to operate, albeit restrictions. And a first big ticket movie, ‘Suraj Pe Mangal Bhari’ is releasing in theatres and for that Zee Studios should be congratulated for leading the way. And importantly this Diwali release is entertaining enough for sure. During lockdown, quite a few films claimed to be entertaining and comic, but most of them could not be impactful. But ‘Suraj Pe Mangal Bhari’ definitely doesn’t fall into the above category and audiences will walk out of the theatres with a smile on their face after watching it. It’s a ‘paisa vasool’ movie.

The story starts in Bombay in 1995 and ends with the city’s name restored to Mumbai. Suraj (Diljit Dosanjh) is the only son whose present aim is to get married. The dairy ‘Jai Mata Rani Dudh Bhandar’ owner parents ((Seema Pahwa and Manoj Pahwa) are trying to find him a match. When they are about to meet the girl’s parents, Suraj gets rejected because of some ‘obscene’ photos. He comes to know that the one sneaky wedding detective Madhu Mangal Rane (Manoj Bajpayee) is the culprit. This sleuth’s motto is to break marriages where he suspects that the boy is not worthy of the girl. Rane slips into many disguises to extract the ‘evidence’. Why he indulges in this has a backstory which unfolds in the end. Deciding to take revenge Suraj stumbles upon a girl Tulshi (तुळसी) (Fatima Sana Shaikh), and falls in love at first sight. But when he comes to know that she’s Madhu’s sister who is going to get married soon, he clicks her pictures at the night club and ensures that she’s rejected by the boy’s family. His revenge of defaming Madhu is over but he is hooked onto Tulsi. But she snaps ties with him the moment she comes to know that he was behind in defaming her family. This punjabi ‘munda’ is head over hills in love with ‘Marathi mulgi’. But will they come together again? The answer lies in the entertaining storytelling of ‘Suraj Pe Mangal Bhari’.

Full marks to director Abhishek Sharma (Tere Bin Laden and it’s sequel, The Shaukeens, Parmanu, The Story Of Pokhran) for keeping the proceedings alive with wit and humour. His cast selection is impeccable and he has given ample footage to everyone to display their flair of acting. Screenplay is pacy, propelling and keeps you engaged in whatever is happening on screen. Music is good and ‘Basanti’ (Karishma Tanna sizzles), ‘Ladki Dramebaaz Hai’, Marathi wedding song etc have turned out good, visually too.

Cinematography is excellent but most of the time South Mumbai’s Ballard Pier and it’s surrounding areas are seen in the background. Art director should have been more creative in creating 90s era. Costumes, unfortunately, do not have retro look. Dialogues are the life-line of the film and they are the stars in this movie. (Additional half star is for dialogues) The film scores heavily in acting department. Diljit Dosanjh’s comic timing is excellent and his one-liners are effortlessly delivered. Fatima Sana Shaikh doesn’t have much screen time, but the story revolves around her character. She looks very pretty and does a decent job at hand. No complaints here. Manuj Sharma (Diljit’s chaddi-buddy), Supriya Pilgaonkar (Manoj and Fatima’s mother), Manoj Pahwa, Seema Pahwa, Vijay Raaj make the scenes watchable and enjoyable. Everybody, including Annu kapoor, have extensively contributed to the comic quotient of the film. Manoj Bajpayee is magnificent and his disguises are mind blowing. He has performed with hearty enthusiasm and proves his ability of playing diverse role effortlessly. Only hitch here is that he couldn’t master the Marathi accent. Do watch the end-credits as they are entertaining too.

‘Suraj Pe Mangal Bhari’ is a feel good movie with ‘Paisa Vasool’ entertainment and could be watched to enhance the Diwali’s festive mood. ***1/2

Zee Studios hosts the pandemic-premiere of ‘Suraj Pe Mangal Bhari’

Last evening, Zee Studios hosted an intimate premiere of their first in-house production film Suraj Pe Mangal Bhari for their cast and crew at a suburban theatre. There was uproar in the air as the Abhishek Sharma directorial gears up to release on Sunday in theatres across the country.

Donning the red carpet, were present the film’s cast comprising Manoj Bajpayee, Diljit Dosanjh, Fatima Sana Shaikh, Karishma Tanna, director Abhishek Sharma, Zee Studio’s CEO Shariq Patel, music composers Javed-Mohsin amongst many others. The unit that was reuniting after many months were upbeat to see each other in person.

The biggest draw factor for the actors and the crew is the experience of watching their labour of love on the big screen. As the experience remained conspicuous by its absence through the pandemic, the team was elated that they got the full 70mm experience for their movie.

Talking about it, captain of the ship Abhishek says, “Movies like this are family experiences and that was the whole idea of making this film. This is for community viewing and for families to enjoy together. I am glad that the film is releasing in theatres. We were so emotional at the film’s premiere because it’s been quite a cataclysmic year for all of us. This felt like the first semblance of normalcy returning to our lives. We laughed together and there were tears of joy. For many reasons, this is one of the most special films for me.

Unrecognisable Manoj Bajpai gyrates with sizzling Karishma in a song ‘Basanti‘ from ‘Suraj Pe Mangal Bhari‘

Setting the tone for fun, in the upcoming rib-tickling comedy Suraj Pe Mangal Bhari, is a crackling special dance number titled Basanti. Today, the makers released the scintillating number Basanti has all the makings of a chartbuster. The song stars Manoj alongside Karishma Tanna. One can also catch a glimpse of Abhishek Banerjee dancing in full fervor. The track is Karishma’s first-ever dance number in a Bollywood song. Dressed in a shimmery red gown, Karishma looks drop-dead gorgeous.

The one person who will be hard to spot in the video is Manoj, who looks nothing like himself. Playing a wedding detective in the movie, the song features him wearing a prosthetic look. With a full face, pointed nose, and heavy pot belly, Manoj is almost unrecognisable. Usually, known for his intense performances, the actor is seen letting his hair down and having a good time at the song-and-dance-routine this time around. The song written by Danish Sabri, sung by Javed-Mohsin, Payal Dev, and Danish, and composed by Javed-Mohsin, is a fun number that will make it certainly make it to every party playlist this Diwali.

Talking about it, Abhishek tells us, “It was a quintessential fun party number. In this film, the songs are a crucial part of the narrative. It’s hard to reveal the setting without giving the plot but Manoj is on a work assignment and we wanted him to have a blast on it. It was a joyride shooting this. It’s a catchy track and I hope it’s one of those numbers that gets people dancing to its tunes.”

Actor Manoj Bajpayee added, “I would have liked to explore dance in movies more but there was little scope for it in my choice of movies. I did enjoy dancing to the catchy beats of Basanti. It reminded me of Satya. I am not a big fan of dancing but I surely don’t mind when it facilitates the storytelling like in this track. I did have a good time after all and I hope people enjoy this little surprise from me”.

The film, directed by Abhishek Sharma, produced by Zee Studios is a lighthearted family entertainer releasing this Diwali starring Manoj Bajpayee, Diljit Dosanjh, and Fatima Sana Shaikh.

‘Suraj Pe Mangal Bhari’ trailer pays homage to family entertainers of the 90s

The world needs a little bit of humor and some bone tickling comedies to survive the grimness of 2020. Keeping that in mind, Zee Studios is all set to release the trailer of their new film Suraj Pe Mangal Bhari today. With Diljit Dosanjh wowing the audience with some crackling punchlines, and Fatima Sana Shaikh ready to be seen in a drastically different avatar and Manoj Bajpayee, who plays a wedding detective making his living out of spying on prospective grooms. The actor dons multiple looks in the trailer as he disguises himself while on the job.

Bajpayee plays Madhu Mangal Rane with flair and steadfast conviction. Battling him out is his equally worthy opponent, Suraj Singh Dhillon played affably by Diljit. Fatima plays a Marathi mulgi from Bombay, with a rebellious streak, whose family wants to see her settled.

Set in 1995 Bombay, the director has captured the city in all its glory. Every detail of the era is beautifully woven into the trailer, from the typical cars reminiscent of the 90s to the background score that was a trademark of the 90s Hindi films.

Talking about his passion project, Sharma says, “This film captures the innocence of bygone times. There is a certain simplicity in the tone we have used which we hope to remind people of the movies of Hrishikesh Mukherjee and Basu Chatterjee. It is a clean family-comedy. It is a funny film but we have consciously ensured to not tread into slapstick humor. It’s a take on the great Indian wedding ‘milestone’ where the whole family participated and ends up in hilarious situations.”
