Charrul is against people projecting surrogacy in a negative light. “I have seen her tweet and she definitely targeted them even though she tweeted she didn’t mean it. So I don’t think this should not happen anyway. We have come a long way. If we continue thinking like this, when will we progress? That’s a very personal decision. I think this is a new trend, a new solution for the people who are unable to become parents. I take this very positively. And why not? There’s nothing wrong with this. We think it’s new because celebrities are opting for it and it’s gaining attention. But this happens in a lot of countries and we all just don’t know about it. So I take it as a blessing for them,” she adds.

The Bhabi Ji Ghar Par Hai and Happu Ki Ultan Paltan actor is in favour of surrogacy. “And tweets like this come every day, we can’t stop them. Yes, I think our society is progressive and we should not get involved in this. It’s sad that people still think this way. There’s reasoning behind things. People just do these kinds of tweets to attract attention. Since we are talking about her tweets now, I think woh successful rahi uski soch ko banane mein aur hum baat kar rahe hai toh hum apna viewpoint rakh rahe hai. We cannot change one’s mindset, but yes we can definitely put forth our opinion,” she concludes.

The actor says that she supports Taslima Nasreen as she is talking fair and even. Talking on the topic Harshali Zine says, “I couldn’t question because it’s legal. But, people who have credibility should question since it is the trading of human beings. By supporting surrogacy we are supporting exploitation”.

She also speaks about the pros and cons, and why she prefers adoption. “In this case there are two women involved, one who cannot bear her child in her womb for whatever reason it could be and the other who is ready to nurture a new life in her womb in exchange for money, gets artificially inseminated. From the modern world perspective, it’s very progressive and practical as both the parties are benefitting. It’s a kind of business and a trend too. Surrogacy is considered cool in the modern world and I won’t be surprised if in the future, machines would be used as carriers. Everything is cool in the mechanical world we are heading towards,” she says.

From a spiritual perspective, according to the actor, it’s immoral. “Giving away the child after birth causes immeasurable pain because of the bond between the pregnant mother and the child she is carrying. Appointing a surrogate to carry your child and trading the child for money both are unethical. Children are a gift and not a right. A child is born out of a union of two people, the third person should not be involved,” she explains.

Harshali shares that she is nobody to judge individual choices. The actor is quite vocal about the fact that she does not support surrogacy.

She adds, “I’m a strong advocate of adoption. If you can’t have your own children please adopt because there are so many innocent lives who need love, care and nurturing. They end up growing up in shelters and a lot of times on the road. Use your money to help a life and not take advantage of someone else’s situation and promote them to get into such a trading business. Sushmita Sen and Raveena Tandon Thadani are perfect examples. Both were very young and single when they adopted girls. Sushmita Sen has raised two girls as a single mother. They should be our role models.”

“I believe we have left out an entire prominent community here with the discussion on surrogacy. Our LGBTQ Community is abundantly a part of surrogacy. It is more than a blessing that our LGBTQ community can be parents thanks to surrogates. Additionally, surrogacy is a rewarding gift. Most women who choose surrogacy do so to give back to another family. Surrogates are legally protected and compensated quite handsomely. This is a well-thought-out process with legalities in place and not something that is decided overnight,” says Somy, who runs her NGO, No More Tears in Miami, US.

Surrogates bring joy to numerous families, according to her. She also points out that this is the most common practice in western society.

“I am happy to see it gaining normalcy in South Asia too, whether the parents are celebrities or not. There is absolutely nothing wrong with parents wanting to take the surrogate route. There is no coercion involved here and all parties are in full acquiescence when it comes to the entire nine months and the aftermath,” she adds.

Somy feels not all surrogates are here for financial reasons, but because they are empathetic towards certain women who have trouble giving birth and have suffered numerous miscarriages. She reveals her personal journey to explain her point.

“I myself have had two miscarriages and if I wanted a child, not that I can have one due to my career, I would be the first to opt for a surrogate. The naysayers do not know the intricate details of why a couple decides to opt for a surrogate, so they do not have a right to judge. None of us do. In the US, we do not even question surrogacy. Anyone who objects or criticises those who opt for a surrogate is still living in the dark ages. Congratulations to all who have welcomed a child via a surrogate,” says Somy.

“I went through all the tweets that Ms Taslima Nasreen shared, and we have merely picked a word from the mammoth of things that are said and meant. She has targeted ‘surrogacy’ as a system in her tweets and not a particular person. I believe what she said is riveting and challenges societal norms which is why people got so aggressive about it. Surrogacy is not the problem, norms that exploit human beings are. She wrote in one of her tweets why she won’t accept surrogacy and why she thinks “surrogacy, burqa, prostitution are just exploitation of women and the poor”, and I appreciate the perspective born out of equality,” says Himansh.

The author had tweeted, “I won’t accept surrogacy until rich women become surrogate moms. I won’t accept burqa until men wear it out of love. I won’t accept prostitution until male prostitutions are built and men wait for female customers. Otherwise surrogacy, burqa, prostitution are just exploitation of women and poor (sic)”.

In the current times when we are welcoming and accepting towards genders, religions, political identities, etc, Himansh thinks personal choices should be equally accepted.

“Honestly, if my sister or any person I know asked for my opinion, I’d say that one should do what makes them comfortable because you will love your baby regardless of the fact it came out of your womb or someone else’s. All you need is the mindset to be a mother. To quote a real-life example, I have spent a lot of time with Tusshar [Kapoor] bhai and his son Laksshya, and you’d never feel there’s any difference in their relationship because of the surrogacy aspect,” he shares.

In fact, Himansh gives another perspective to this debate. “As a pet parent, I know that the care and the love which a being received makes all the difference. I’m not trying to compare a pet to a baby, but the love we have for them is special. Love and kindness can do wonders in every sphere, for every living being,” he adds.
