#VivekAgnihotri’s Files Trilogy is a series of socio-political dramas that revisit painful and often silenced chapters of Indian history. It began with The Tashkent Files (2019), exploring the mysterious death of former #PrimeMinisterLalBahadurShastri. This was followed by #TheKashmirFiles (2022), which depicted the mass exodus of Kashmiri Pandits in the 1990s and sparked nationwide debate. The final installment, The Bengal Files (2025), portrays the Bengal violence of the 1940s and its contemporary echoes. Together, the trilogy has been praised for raising awareness while also drawing criticism for its polarising and hard-hitting narrative style.

The Bengal Files attempts to revisit one of the darkest chapters of Indian history—the Bengal violence of the 1940s. The narrative shifts between two timelines: the horrors of Direct Action Day, the Great Calcutta Killings, and the Noakhali riots of the pre-independence era, and a present-day CBI investigation into the disappearance of a Dalit girl. Through this dual structure, the film aims to draw parallels between history and contemporary socio-political conflicts.

The screenplay is overstretched with excessive focus on graphic violence, often overshadowing storytelling. The runtime of 3 hous 24 minutes is too long which dilutes the impact of the subject. The dialogues are sparkling at places. The direction is smooth but lack subtlety at times insinutes lopsided political comments. Hard-hitting scenes succeed in evoking shock and empathy. The cinematography is authentic in period recreation and production design.

Pallavi Joshi once again stands out, portraying both vulnerability and resilience as an aged survivor. Simratt Kaur delivers raw intensity during the flashback sequences. Saswata Chatterjee impresses as the antagonist, bringing menace with subtlety. Namashi Chakraborty surprises with his intensity in the period portions. Anupam Kher as Gandhi and Darshan Kumar as the conflicted CBI officer lend gravitas to the narrative.

The Bengal Files is a bold, emotionally charged film that will leave audiences shaken. For some, it will feel like a necessary reminder of forgotten history; for others, it may come across as overly dramatic and politically motivated. Regardless of where you stand, it is not a film that can be watched passively—it demands emotional investment.

Filmmaker Vivek Agnihotri is gearing up for the release of #TheBengalFiles, the final chapter of his Files Trilogy after The Tashkent Files (2019) and The Kashmir Files (2022). The film, starring his wife and National Award–winning actress #PallaviJoshi, is slated to release on September 5, 2025. Much like his earlier works, the film has already sparked controversy, with critics labeling it “propaganda.”

Speaking about the backlash, Agnihotri revealed he has received death threats over the film. In a recent interview, he shared, “Yes. I mean, I have a family, a wife, and a child. Of course, I’m worried about the state of affairs. The problem is, we have a history of making socio-political films in this country. Many great filmmakers have made them. But now it has become very difficult to make such films. How many of them actually tell the truth? You know, we’ve had great films on the freedom struggle, the communal riots, the holocausts in India and abroad. So if I’m reaching into the past to tell a story that even I didn’t know much about, why am I being targeted?”

Earlier, in a conversation with News18, Pallavi Joshi brushed off allegations of the film being propaganda. She said, “I don’t even hear it anymore. When a child doesn’t get his toy, he keeps crying for it, and sometimes you just have to ignore until the child forgets about it. I mean, that is how I treat this whole situation. For how long will you react to a falsehood?”

The Bengal Files is written and directed by Vivek Ranjan Agnihotri and produced by #AbhishekAgarwal and #PallaviJoshi. It stars National Award Winners Mithun Chakraborty, Pallavi Joshi, Anupam Kher, Saswata Chatterjee, Namashi Chakraborty, Puneet Issar and Darshan Kumar. The film, presented by Tej Narayan Agarwal & I Am Buddha Productions, is part of Vivek’s Files trilogy, which includes The Kashmir Files and The Tashkent Files. The film will arrive in theatres on September 5, 2025.

According to IMDb’s real-time popularity charts (as of August 20), Sajid Nadiadwala’s action thriller Baaghi 4, releasing on September 5, is the most-awaited Indian film of 2025. With 24.5% audience interest, it has taken a clear lead and along with other upcoming biggies, has cracked IMDb’s coveted Top 10 Most Anticipated Indian Titles list.

The #TigerShroff actioner, part of the popular Baaghi franchise, has been drawing audience interest, ever since the teaser was released recently. The film’s dominance on the anticipation charts highlights the continued appeal of mass action cinema in India.

Close behind Baaghi 4 is Pawan Kalyan’s They Call Him OG, securing the second spot with 13.8%. The Telugu biggie, helmed by Sujeeth, has been generating enormous hype, particularly due to Pawan Kalyan’s return in a stylish gangster avatar. Scheduled to release on September 25, the movie promises to be a big-screen action spectacle.

At number three is Sidharth Malhotra and Janhvi Kapoor’s romantic comedy #ParamSundari (12.4%). The movie is slated to release on August 29. Akshay Kumar and Arshad Warsi’s #JollyLLB3 (9.9%), scheduled for September 19 release, finds itself in fourth position currently, proving that courtroom drama-comedies still hold wide audience appeal even in a crowded lineup of mega-budget entertainers.

The fifth to tenth positions show a diverse mix of genres and industries, signalling how anticipation in Indian cinema is no longer confined to just one region or style. Anime-inspired #Mirai (9.5%) has carved its way into the fifth slot, while #LokahChapterOne: Chandra (8.7%) and #TheBengalFiles (6.9%) further add to the range with fantasy storytelling and politically charged drama, respectively.

#RaghuDakat (5.3%) and #Kantara: A Legend – Chapter 1 (5.2%) showcase how period dramas and franchise-driven sequels continue to attract attention, with #Kaantha (3.9%) rounding off the top ten. The rating of the top 10 movies is based on IMDb’s page views, which keep changing.

Filmmaker #VivekRanjanAgnihotri, known for critically acclaimed films The Kashmir Files and The Tashkent Files, is gearing up for the final installment of his Files Trilogy, The Bengal Files. The film, already stirring conversation and controversy ahead of its release, aims to shed light on a lesser-known chapter of India’s Partition.

Speaking on The Right Angle with Sonal Kalra, Season 2, produced by Gautam Thakker Films, Agnihotri highlighted how Bollywood has shaped public perception of Partition largely through Punjab’s lens. “When I ask people about the first visual image of Partition that comes to their mind, everybody thinks of dead bodies coming in trains and all of this happening in Punjab. Bollywood has contributed to creating a half-truth in people’s minds. But in reality, the entire playground, the Kurukshetra, is in Bengal. Bengal has been divided thrice: first in 1905, into Hindu Bengal and Muslim Bengal, then again in 1947, between East Bengal and West Bengal, and then in 1971, when it was culturally destroyed,” he said.

With The Bengal Files, Agnihotri says he intends to tell a story one that delves into Bengal’s overlooked and painful history of Partition.

Actress turned Producer Pallavi Joshi is set to make a powerful return to the screen with her pivotal role in the much-anticipated film, ‘#TheBengalFiles’, directed by #VivekRanjanAgnihotri. Produced by Abhishek Agarwal and Joshi herself, the film dives deep into lesser-known chapters of Indian history, continuing the legacy of socially relevant storytelling seen in Vivek’s previous work.

Pallavi, known for her commitment to intense, layered characters, plays Ma Bharati, a figure meant to embody warmth, innocence, and the enduring spirit of the nation. But bringing this character to life came with its own set of challenges.

“This was one of the biggest challenges. It’s difficult to look so old. Most prosthetics made me look scary. And that was our biggest challenge. The idea was for her to look innocent and lovable. Ma Bharati needed to be warm and approachable,” Joshi shared in a statement. “My only reference was my dadi. I remember her very old but very sweet at the same time. We worked on the look for almost 6 months. I gave up all skin care during this period to make my skin appear dry. Every day I sat down working on Ma Bharati’s character, her dementia, until it became a muscle memory. Our technical team also put their efforts into helping me to their fullest. And the end result is for all to see.”

The Bengal Files is written by Vivek Ranjan Agnihotri and produced by Abhishek Agarwal and Pallavi Joshi. It stars Mithun Chakraborty, Pallavi Joshi, Anupam Kher, and Darshan Kumar. The film presented by Tej Narayan Agarwal & I Am Buddha is a part of Vivek’s Files trilogy that includes ‘The Kashmir Files’ and ‘The Tashkent Files.’ The film will arrive in theatres on September 5, 2025.

#VivekRanjanAgnihotri is gearing up with the third installment of their trilogy, ‘The Delhi Files: The Bengal Chapter’ which is now renamed as ‘The Bengal Files: Right to Life.’ The film will now be released as ‘The Bengal Files: Right to Life,’ scheduled for theatrical release on September 5, 2025. The makers of the film #AbhishekAgarwal, #PallaviJoshi along with Vivek Agnihotri have finalised the decision especially on public demand.

This film marks the third installment in Agnihotri’s “Files” trilogy, following ‘The Tashkent Files’ (2019) and ‘The Kashmir Files’ (2022). The upcoming film delves into the communal violence in undivided Bengal during the 1940s, particularly focusing on events like Direct Action Day and the Noakhali riots. Agnihotri has described these incidents as a “Hindu genocide” and aims to shed light on this often overlooked chapter of Indian history.

The film features a stellar cast, including Mithun Chakraborty, Anupam Kher and Pallavi Joshi in pivotal roles. Despite the challenges faced during production, including safety concerns that led to filming in Mumbai instead of Kolkata, Agnihotri and his team have completed the project and are set to share this important story with audiences nationwide.

The makers had released the teaser of the film a few months ago, which featured veteran actor Mithun Chakraborty in a haunting first look, walking through an empty corridor with a rugged appearance and a white beard, reciting the Preamble to the Constitution with a burnt tongue.

The Delhi Files is written by Vivek Agnihotri and produced by Abhishek Agarwal and Pallavi Joshi. It stars Mithun Chakraborty, Pallavi Joshi, Anupam Kher, and Darshan Kumar. The film presented by Tej Narayan Agarwal & I Am Buddha Productions is a part of Vivek’s Files trilogy that includes The Kashmir Files and The Tashkent Files.
