20th Century Studios and Imagine Entertainment hosted the world premiere of their upcoming survival thriller, Whalefall, at the El Capitan Theatre in Hollywood. The event was attended by cast members Austin Abrams, Josh Brolin, Elisabeth Shue and John Ortiz, alongside director, co-writer and producer Brian Duffield; author and co-writer Daniel Kraus; and producers Brian Grazer and Allan Mandelbaum.

Following its premiere, Whalefall is garnering praise from global audiences and critics for its performances, intense visuals, direction and ambitious production. Based on Daniel Kraus’s novel and directed by Brian Duffield, the film stars Austin Abrams, Emily Rudd and Josh Brolin. At its heart is the strained relationship between Jay Gardiner (Abrams) and his father, Mitt Gardiner (Brolin). As Jay fights to survive an extraordinary predicament, he must draw on the lessons his father taught him, bringing their complicated relationship into sharp focus in the most unexpected circumstances.

Tessa Smith on X raved about how “#Whalefall had me on the edge of my seat. What a WILD ride! The sounds & visuals had my stomach churning (in a good way). Austin Abrams & Josh Brolin are amazing together! Didn’t expect to get emotional. A beautiful exploration of grief.”

Zach Pope too shared on X, saying “#Whalefall is survival horror at its BEST. A nasty, intense escape room inside a giant f***ing whale that somehow becomes a devastating & profound story about fathers, sons, and old wounds. Austin Abrams delivers a career best performance. I came for the terror. I left nearly in tears.”

Courtney Howard commented, saying, “#Whalefall isn’t solely a visceral survival film. It’s about dealing with unresolved, suffocating & toxic grief caused by a father who has difficulty communicating unconditional love. I lost my father 3 months ago & he was that to my brothers. I was a blubbering mess throughout.”

Tom Chatalbash praised the production and direction, commenting, “Director Brian Duffield has crafted a ferociously visceral and immersive survival film anchored by another emotionally and physically committed performance from Abrams who carries this one effortlessly. The practical effects fused with the vfx make everything feel tactile, effectively claustrophobic, and wonderfully gross as the clock ticks and the oxygen depletes” As well as complimented on the performances of Abrams and Brolin and their dynamic.

Griffin Schiller described the movie as, “For as viscerally intense, grotesque, and claustrophobic as #Whalefall is, it’s the wistful reflections on a complicated paternal relationship that truly give the film its resonance.” And complimented the actors, saying, “2026 continues to be the year of Austin Abrams, as he delivers another layered, physical, all-encompassing performance, supported by the emotional gravitas of Josh Brolin. Very Ad Astra, while also reminding me of 90s survival dramas. Great film!”
