“Maintaining mental fitness is crucial, as I’ve emphasised. It’s not just about physical fitness; mental wellness plays a significant role as well. Meditation is a practice I engage in regularly. Given my profession in the restaurant industry, I naturally encounter friends frequently. Socialising and relaxation are important aspects of my routine. On Sundays, I indulge a bit, watching films and taking walks on the beach or with friends. Additionally, I incorporate affirmations and gratitude meditation into my daily life to stay motivated and mentally fit. Portion control is something I prioritize during tastings and trials at my restaurant, and I balance indulgences with increased physical activity,” she says.

Ask her how she stays fit physically, and she says, “Following a specific diet plan has been transformative for me. I aim to finish my meals a few hours before bedtime and prioritise a light breakfast followed by a balanced lunch and dinner. While I’m currently focused on weight loss, I generally practice moderation in my diet, avoiding junk food and excessive indulgences. Regular exercise, including gym sessions, walks, and swimming, is integral to my fitness regimen. I supplement my diet with vegetarian protein sources like paneer, soya, and quinoa, along with vegan protein shakes.”

She adds, “Yoga is another practice I believe in, and I plan to incorporate it more regularly into my routine. Additionally, I prioritise self-care in the mornings, engaging in pranayama and meditation to set a positive tone for the day. Overall, being fit means being mentally and physically strong, maintaining a toned body, and embracing a holistic approach to wellness.”

“I have had the spirit of an artist since my childhood, so right from the start, I knew I wanted to become an actor. Even when I didn’t know much about acting, I used to perform in front of the mirror and act as if I were a celebrity. I manifested my dreams even before the concept of manifestation was widely spoken about. The only thing I knew was to keep focusing and living my dream: to be famous, to act in front of the camera, and to play different characters. I ate, slept, breathed, and walked with this dream every moment of my life,” she said.

“If I couldn’t act or perform, there was no reason to live. My passion only grew stronger over time. I used to do theater and just wanted to show my talent to the world. I came with a fire inside me,” she added.

Simple became a household name with the popular sitcom Shararat, and she said that it was her best show. “I enjoyed doing it a lot. It created a household name for me. I was learning and evolving during my initial days in Mumbai,” she said.

Her last stint on TV was Ziddi Dil Maane Na, and she mentioned that it reminded her of Shararat. She added, “These shows were for the younger generation, and I made some of my best friends there. Ziddi Dil Maane Na was the last show I did, and I had so much fun with it. It was an army-based show. From Shararat, where I was hilariously funny, to this show, where I portrayed a different, more relatable version of myself, I haven’t done such a normal, interesting character before. My whole journey has been unforgettable.”

Simple also stressed that from her first show, Kkusum, to her last show, Ziddi Dil Maane Na, her acting style has evolved. She added, “The acting style from then to now has definitely evolved. Now, there is more realism and exposure to real acting. It’s beautiful to see that all the learning that people had in theaters is being utilized in web series. Time has changed, and there is so much exposure available. Today, an actor can be considered a hero even with mediocre looks or no looks at all, purely based on talent. It’s such an exciting time for genuine talent to shine.’

Any advice that you would give to your younger self? “I wouldn’t give any advice to my younger self. I followed my heart, did everything I wanted to do, and made decisions based on whether I enjoyed the character or not,” Simple concluded.

But she revealed that her first show “Chandra Nandini” will always be close to her heart. “I played a princess and the daughter of one of the greatest historical figures of India, Chandragupta Maurya played by Rajat Tokas, in the show. I absolutely loved the costumes, heavy makeup, and beautiful jewelry. Even today I would love to do a historical drama. And the best part I took from the show is I made lifelong friends. It’s been five years and I still have an amazing bond with a few of them to date,” she said.

The young actress further confessed that it’s her childhood dream of becoming a “heroine” that makes her so passionate about her work. She added, “It is also my love for performing in front of the camera and my curiosity about human behavior. I am an extremely curious person when it comes to human feelings and psychology. Acting allows me to experience many lifetimes in one by taking on many different roles and living different stories.”

“Finally, and the most special of all, my mom and dad. They were actors at one point in time and had to give up that career for me and my siblings. I want to be able to live their dream through me,” she concluded.

“This is absolutely true. That’s why it’s called ‘showbiz’. One can’t be in this industry and expect fame and attention to not come by. It’s naturally tagged along. I don’t take it as a pressure because I honestly enjoy it. But the pressure comes when you work on something and the anticipation starts…you worry about everything, from getting it released, doing the right PR and eventually the audience liking it. In the TV world, it’s called good TRP and in cinema, it’s called a blockbuster,” she says.

Ask her what people like to see when it comes to actors and their social media handles, and she says, “What I have really noticed is that people tend to indulge a lot in news related to dating and lives and also their next release. If I follow any celebrity, then I would be more interested in his/her lifestyle like eating habits and workout routines.”

However, good acting never goes unnoticed, she says. “The audience never misses out on good actors. They appreciate and applaud and make sure that the actor is aware of it. As an actor, while our end goal is to please the audience, we need to first pave our way to them. That’s possible only if we first grab the attention of casting directors, producers and directors. That’s real hard work,” she adds.

Ask her if she is satisfied with the way her career is coming along, and she says, “Yes 100%, I am very grateful that I have a great show in hand. I have a great tuning with everyone, right from the co-actors to the producers to everyone on set. My character Jia is one of the prominent ones. My dream to come in the posters has come true. And to top it off, the show is loved by many and it’s one of the most viewed shows in all of Indian streaming platforms. I get to live my dream every day and this has given me more motivation to be a better actor and hope to be a part of bigger shows because although I have everything going well, I can’t pause. I have to keep pushing myself because the sky’s the limit.”

How does it feel to be associated with Sony SAB’s Ziddi Dil Maane Na?

I am elated to be a part of Sony SAB and Ziddi Dil – Maane Na. The concept of the show is set on a premise which is very intriguing to me. There are hardly any shows being made on patriotism and how the young generation dedicates their lives for the country. The show also has a clean messaging and that’s one of the best things about Sony SAB. I am very excited to be playing the role of Param Shergill in Ziddi Dil Maane na. The cast and crew is young and full of energy, and with Param’s entry a lot of dynamic will change so the audience should definitely look out for that.

Please tell us something about your character. What should the audience look forward to with your entry on the show?

Param’s entry brings a lot of twists and turns. The character has brought in a lot of excitement and hope into the show. There are major plot twists coming along and the audience are in for a shocker. Param also brings out a lot of raw emotions and unexpected moments and that is exactly what has motivated me to be a part of the show. I can’t reveal too much about the storyline, but it will be a banger.

I have been showered with responses, love and warmth from the fans on social media and more even before the character has been revealed. As an actor I feel this show has a unique and young fan base, I am thrilled to see their enthusiasm and it makes me want to give it my best.

The character of Param Shergill is pivotal to the plot. He is the one Karan has always looked up to and now Param has to choose between his morals and greed. The track evolves around Param dealing with his trauma and coming back to the academy and whether or not he stays true to his principles.

How was your experience shooting with the cast and crew of the show?

The experience with the cast and crew has been amazing. It’s a young cast and crew, very welcoming and warm. They made me feel at home from the first day itself. They are a close-knit group and have been bonding very well through the shoots which keeps everyone on set positive, energetic and fun. They made me feel very welcome

You are back on television after a long time, how does it feel to be back on the silver screen?

I have not taken a very long break. My last show ended in November. So I haven’t taken a very long break but it was a much needed one to re-energise and dedicate some attention and time to family as well as I took up some household responsibility. I made most of the free time I got as a daily screen actor, I am very glad I am coming back as Param Shergill in Ziddi Dil – Maane Na in the character I will be playing as my come back on sets

Any message for your fans/viewers?

The audience can expect a lot of twists and turns. The character has brought in a lot of excitement and hope into the show and there is so much to look forward to. But since childhood, he always wanted to be an actor. “What really satisfies me is that as an actor, this industry teaches you something. Life teaches you everything. Life slaps you and it slaps you so hard that at times, you feel very numb because it hits you directly on your heart and you feel so numb that you feel like a needle is poking in your heart. It is going that deep and you’re just feeling numb,” he said.

“The rejection that you actually go through as a struggling actor or as an actor, you start valuing things. And that’s how I believe that whatever has come my way, I have started valuing it. Because that’s how an actor actually evolves. I would say this industry has taught me that I started experimenting on myself,” he added. In the industry, he has seen his downfall more. “I would say my 8 years of my journey have seen how the industry prospered from theatres to digital platforms. So I have seen so many changes. I would still say I feel like there’s a lot to learn,” he said.

Everyday is a challenge for him. “When I go to the set, there are so many characters on the show, my character Faizi itself is challenging for me. So everyday you just learn something and always try to be a learner more than a teacher to someone else. Because the more you learn, the more you keep yourself grounded, keep a low profile. When I go to the set, I’m completely blank. At times, I feel I just show that I don’t know anything. And that’s how whenever you ask questions I believe that you should be very much shameless in asking questions. Yes but the questions have to be relevant (laughs).”

“So be shameless, ask whatever queries you have. The way the industry has evolved, the same way actors have also evolved. Like I believe that I have evolved a lot. This industry has actually taught me. Till death, I would say I’m still learning. I remember that 4 years back Amitabh Bachchan Sir said that he’s still struggling so who are we to say how is our journey as an actor and what have we achieved and fulfilled in our life.”

For him, every character is special. “Whatever I have done, I have done different kinds of roles. But one character that I would say was difficult for me to was to understand Ashutosh Kulkarni from Kawach Mahashivratri. The show started with a leap. I was playing the negative role in that. I had to maintain the Marathi accent. Being a Maharashtrian, born and brought up in Mumbai in a Brahmin family, Marathi language is not a challenge but the performance as well as the way it was written, I think it was a challenge,” he said.

“To adapt to that character so well, it was a task. Sooner or later everybody was convinced and I was also convinced with my character, so it was amazing.” He has been doing negative roles all his life, but for the first time since last year he started playing a positive role. “Last year my show for Colors was called Naati Pinky Ki Lambi Love Story in which I played the parallel lead. The character’s name was Vikas, who was a very submissive, simple living and high thinking guy. That character was a little challenging for me because I had never played a positive character before,” he said.

It was a challenge for him. “I know Tanu Tiwari ma’am was creative. She believed in me. She thought I really nailed this role so well. And she had that belief in me so much that I didn’t realise that I’ll be able to pull it off that well. Finally when we saw the first episode of my character from that show, it was mind-boggling. I was like, ‘wow! I did it. And they just loved it.’ And the director who directed me in Naati Pinky Ki Lambi Love Story, is the same director of my current show Ziddi Dil Maane Na. So we had those moments, we kept talking about our previous show,” he said.

Shaalien Malhotra, essaying the role of Karan and Balli said, “The latest track has the biggest twist yet. Karan was going through a lot lately and just when everything was looking to fall in place, an unfortunate incident takes his life away. Karan had hopes and plans for him and Monami, and I could really feel it all vanishing away painfully in just a few seconds when we were filming the parting scene. To know that you are breathing your last breath as a character is an unfathomable feeling. This character has taught me so much. Karan’s discipline spilled over to my life and made me imbibe a healthier lifestyle. The way he took charge of his life was also awe inspiring. Karan will always remain a part of me.”

Kaveri Priyam, essaying the role of Monami said, “The latest episode was very emotionally draining for me with Monami’s first love Karan passing away. Losing a loved one is never easy and losing someone at such a young age and that too in an accident like this is extremely disheartening and agonizing. It leaves a void in you forever. I had to dig deep within to cull out the emotions that Monami would feel in that moment and match them to the gravitas of the situation. It will be interesting to see how she deals with Karan’s loss and her unfulfilled love which will be a different and challenging experience for me also to portray as an actor.”

The audience has too many options and that is probably the reason why viewership is scattered, according to many. “Today you can watch variations on TV and watch OTT as well. There are so many varieties for the viewers to choose from. Earlier we used to get bored but today we have so many new things. Also for actors, it’s a great platform as they have got a variation as well and more doors have opened up to showcase their talent. Same for those working behind the scene,” he adds.

The pace of working is very fast in all industries including entertainment and that is somewhere causing the unsaid mental fatigue. And, we did have much to do given that Covid stopped or postponed work.

“Things that were stopped for two years have now begun to flow. I don’t think anyone would have a problem with it. For the past two years, things had become very slow and now things are in a routine. Work from home people are loaded as they have multiple jobs and do not get rest. I feel things will settle down slowly and I pray everything comes back on track,” he explains.

They are each other’s soulmates and have an undeniable connection. Balli can act like Karan but he won’t be as caring and gentle as him and hopefully, Monami will pick up the cues and act accordingly. While Karan is in distress, Balli is trying to do something which is morally wrong. One should never take advantage of any woman under any circumstances. This track in the show thus attempts to teach all men to not stoop to Balli’s level and be more like Karan so that they deserve a Monami someday.”

Kaveri Priyam, essaying the role of Monami says, “Although Monami is suspicious, she is giving Balli the benefit of doubt. She is scared for Karan’s health and is in a mental turmoil herself since his accident. Balli is attracted to Monami and he feels that he has the right to take advantage of her under the pretense that Karan and Monami are in a relationship. But this is wrong on so many levels. The fact that Balli even thought of taking undue advantage of a woman is wrong. Monami can only hope that Karan will step up in the situation and rescue her. This track is a game changer and I hope fate is kind to both of us.”

How was the transformation from Karan to Balli?

I think it’s beautiful as an actor to reprise different portrayals. You feel enriched, recharged, motivated and there’s something to look forward to. You feel alive because there’s so much that you are doing. I wanted to give the audience an authentic feel for both the characters and anticipate what Balli’s next move could be. So, I had to introspect as well on how Balli would react to certain situations and how Karan would react to the same. I focused a lot on minute details to make both the characters look real and believable.

What preparations did you do to adapt to Balli’s accent and mannerisms?

My parents are the reason behind it as I’m a Punjabi. Also, the fact that he is more flamboyant, gives me as an actor, the scope to explore more and eventually deliver more. That is why I always feel that villains are more famous than heroes as characters, because they have more freedom to go crazy. So, if audiences love me as Karan, who is more reserved, I had to make sure they loved Balli’s character twice as much as that of Karan’s character.

What is your opinion on the upcoming track?

I think it is a remarkable track, especially because it’s been explored after a long time. I haven’t heard of a double role like this in a while. It is not very commercial or cliched and that is going to be the main selling point of the track.

Now that you have donned a different character on Ziddi Dil, whom do you connect with more, Karan or Balli?

Both are my reflections; I can see both the characters now when I stand in front of a mirror. The day I stop seeing either of them is the day I am being untrue to the actor that I am and the character that I play.

The show has completed 150 episodes. How has been the journey so far?

It has been a beautiful experience. A lot of people don’t know that this is the maximum number of episodes I’ve ever done in a show in such a short time. My first show was a bi-weekly and we touched 150 in a span of one and a half or two years. So, if I am still sticking to the show, it means the show is really nice, because people are giving it a lot of love. There’s always something new to look forward to and that is the most motivational thing in the world.
